I saw Mudvayne last month, and Ryan was unstoppable. Energy to spare, never missed a beat, and he played his heart out. Like watching "The Ryan Martinie Show," and it was a great show!
And he is also an avid reader… can you imagine?? A bass player legendary like him, and also a book geek? Not that this has something to do with your comment, but i just wrote this …
At one point he really hated mudvayne, which is the reason Greg had quit hellyeah Greg was always under the impression hellyeah was a side project but he realized it wasn’t for Chad.
@@fcon2123 Here's what he told Revolver: "Everybody loves L.D. 50. The reason why is because L.D. 50 is the first fucking thing that they ever heard by Mudvayne. But me, personally, I’m not a huge fan of L.D. 50 because I’m not a big fan of the mix. I think the mix is very bass-heavy. To me, it doesn’t feel like a band mix. We’re a metal band, it needs to be guitar-centric. It should be very guitar-forward, and it wasn’t." I can't even wrap my head around that statement.
You should really do “Not Falling” off their The End of All Things to Come album. I humbly believe that song and that album over all is the peak of his bass playing in Mudvayne. Plus it’s not lost in the mix, the bass is right in your face.
He uses a flamenco technique. A kind of percursive fingering. Very cool. The band is a power trio and they fill out the songs very well by adding chords and unexpected things. A very creative bassist.
love when you do mudvayne videos, Ryan is such an incredibly unique player and it's great to see him get his flowers. as for the tornado, idk if anybody else mentioned it but it's the butterfly effect, that's why there's that shot of it at the beginning of the video. KILLER concept, killer song
Man you have a really good ear for chords, I like how quickly you can pick up on the chords and play them. I play guitar but I really want to start playing bass. The bass just speaks to me more.
i grew up playing guitar. the first time i saw Claypool jam with Buckethead, Brain, and Bernie Worrell at Bonnaroo '02, i had the same thoughts. Ryan Martinie's performance on LD 50 also really resonated with me and i picked up the bass. you should really go for it. Charles Berthoud, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Stu Hamm are a few others to look for if you aren't already well aware
The song Not Falling from The End of All Things to Come, has a great bass line, IMO And it was in their phase between LD 50 and Lost and Found. Maybe worth another Mudvayne reaction??
The one thing I wish more than anything. There were more videos of Mike Butler from early Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. They were my local band. Got to see them 15 time's before Danza 2 came out. When they were still only a local Murfreesboro band. Then, as many times since with Josh Travis. But Mike was an absolute madman on bass. Never seen a bassist play like him.
This is the sickest modern metal bass track ever. I remember being so mesmerized by it that I analyzed the isolated bass track, tabbing it out, learning it and doing a cover (it's still somewhere on my channel). I'd like to think that my cover is the most accurate one on UA-cam haha. Cool video, keep it up!
I started doing that “tapping” technique over 30 years ago and always felt it had a “piano” kind of sound. By no means did I feel like I invented some new technique but, like Ryan, I incorporated it into my playing quite a bit. I really like the ring to the notes & how they cut through.
Your videos kinda helped convince me to check out Ryan and Mudvayne proper when I had kinda avoided them for awhile because of their Nu-Metal connections
I loved a lot of nu metal growing up(literally my high school era lol) so I never had the negative connotation - but it did always annoy me that Mudvayne just got that categorization by default. And they certainly have some nu metal influence of course, kinda like how The Smashing Pumpkins isn't necessarily grunge but has a lot of grunge influence just from the era; similarly, I always considered Mudvayne much more of a modern progressive metal band than a nu metal band. Their writing & playing was just different from the typical nu metal bands.
I idea of System of a Down, Linkin Park, mudvayne, disturbed, korn, limp bisket, slipknott etc. all being the same genre of music is insane. They are nothing alike in sounds or techniques, and were just lumped together because of the time period they coexisted. All genres have good and bad in them, you just have to find what sounds good to you.
The mastering on this album is phenomenal. Ryan is there and the bass is always a major presence in their music and this whole album showcases it without it being overpowering.
I was inspired to play bass cause of fieldy from korn. It was so aggressive sounding. Then i heard mudvayne later in the years and ryans playing inspired me to switch up my playing a bit.
Mercy severity next please! Such sick bass lines. Definitely one of my favourites. Plus you haven’t done anything from their album “end of all things to come” yet.
Severed is an incredible track of theirs you need to check out. Their live in Peoria 2001 performance of it was really cool. Ryan does it all in there and has a beautiful, atmospheric tapping section that's kind of a solo. 100% check that out if you're enjoying Mudvayne!
This video put alot in perspective for me. Two of my favorite bassists of the late 90's/early 2000's both used a Warwick bass, and they couldn't be more different in style/approach. One is Ryan Martinie, the other.... is P-Nut from 311.
Dude for bass listen to mudvaynes IMN before he says all work and play, that bass line digs into your nose. Also slipknots AOV. where he starts singing and echoing the bass in the song cuts sooo smooth that part replays in my head a few times a week
Bruh - Cinderella Story by Mudvayne. Shit rules. Also super melodic and jazzy. Also underrated as hell. Their post Lost and Found catalog is great if you like rock, and great drums/bass. Not so great if you want more LD 50.
After seeing them play last week, I'm reminded that "Under My Skin" from L.D. 50 has some of the most impressive bass playing to ever exist and is unfortunately overlooked because it was never one of the popular songs
This song is one i ALWAYS use to tune new stereo systems in my vehicles to tune for bass notes. If i can't hear the bass guitar in this song, i know to change the settings on my stereo
You should check the bass tone Paolo Gregoletto got with his Warwick in the song Bleed into me by trivium. That bass intro tone is gnarly. It’s an overall good song imo as well.
If you haven't, you need to check out March Of The Cephalopods by Soften The Glare. Its Ryans Jazz fusion band and his bass lines on that song are gorgeous.
I've heard Ryan talk about the technique you're speaking about at around 5:40. He is in a drop D tuning and is slapping octaves. You can see it in his finger spread on the tapping side and fretting side in that still clip. There may be some other notes in there to chord out, but the drop tuning and a parallel octave is key to this..
I'm not sure if anyone already mentioned it. But Ryan is also tapping the octave flaggiolettes, might not be the case always. But pretty often. Really cool technique!
I love all your reactions. Ryan is a god!! You NEED to do the playthrough with him of "Turn around" of soften the glare. It's an animated video of him playing it but one of the BEST and not "poppy" like thus song... you won't be disappointed. 😊
Mudvayne performed "Happy?" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 2005. There are some videos of it on YT, but in SD quality. There are some decent camera shots of Ryan playing that you might find interesting/useful.
Many people are suggesting their earlier songs, but in all honesty I think a side by side comparison of the original "King of Pain" by The Police and Mudvayne's cover of the song repleat and full of bass chords, would be a masterful showcase of the instrument
If you want some extra craziness from them you should check out “IMN”. Martinie goes OFF in it, goes from like a harsh mellow to harsh harsh. Just a really good song in general.
Dude…..totally agree. I feel like that album had quite a few songs where he really shined. Fall into sleep, choices….. just killed it (of course he always does lol)
I had to remember that they ditched the face paint and weird looks for this album (2nd album was a space alien look) because they wanted to get back to the roots of their music and not be driven by anything with gimmicks. I like all their albums, but this one showed so much growth. Very happy they reunited after their 11 year hiatus and hope they start making new music again at some point. Btw, they did get back to the face paint after reuniting and they've been sounding great! Thanks also for showing off Ryan's talent as he's always been such a beast.
6:59 one of the other things with that tap strike thing he does is he will go up and down the board to the octave fret for the strike do it give something of a harmonic too.
Sticking with the songs named Happy theme...check out Straight Faced!! Conviction is an amazing track and Negative has some great bass grooves. In fact, the Broken album was produced by bassist Jim Cherry from Strung Out.
In the first 3 albums he focused on a different technique. Ld 50 was more slap pop, end of all things to come was more struck chords, and lost and found was those tap struck chords. I definitely recommend you back track and check out not falling.
I could have sworn I'd read that Ryan plays a 5 string, but drops the four strings (EADG) down to BEAD (and doesn't use the first B string in "BBEAD") to help get that signature aggressive, floppy string sound in the earlier albums (as if a Thumb bass isn't signature enough!). I'd read that his technique in Happy? with his right hand is tapping, but specifically mirroring an octave above what his left hand is doing - it's percussive, but it's also subtly creating harmonics (not as obvious as playing pinch harmonics, but sounding different than plucking over the pickups). With 351 comments already, someone's probably already said this (so sorry for the potential duplication!).
Lost and Found, the album this song is from, was the last album of theirs that I could listen front to back. Everything after that was just so different that I couldn't get into it.
I saw Mudvayne last month, and Ryan was unstoppable. Energy to spare, never missed a beat, and he played his heart out. Like watching "The Ryan Martinie Show," and it was a great show!

Not that this has something to do with your comment, but i just wrote this …
@@AlexandrCretu What type of books? Is he the mind behind the -sort of- "esoteric" lyrics on The End Of All Things To Come"?
Their singer had the nerve to say it always bugged him how loud the bass is on LD50. Like, excuse me? Andy Wallace knew what was up! Crank that bass!
Wait, he really said that? Your band has literally one of the most talented bass players alive and you want his presence tuned down!? Sacrilege.
That is insane the bass is so underrated even by the band apparently
At one point he really hated mudvayne, which is the reason Greg had quit hellyeah Greg was always under the impression hellyeah was a side project but he realized it wasn’t for Chad.
