Remember when Konami was a video game company that made quality video games before they suddenly became known for their lottery machines? PEPPERIDGE FARMS REMEMBERS!
The mage that appears after phase 1 of the Dracula fight is supposedly Drolta Tzuentes. She's a witch that was hired by Elizabeth Bathory to revive Dracula.
@@kieragard To be honest, the first time i played this game (digitally, i think) i thought it was Shaft too. But to some who don't know the story behind this game very well may mistake Drolta as one of Dracula's forms.
I own most original Castlevanias, but some have slipped by over the years. As of recently, I've been scooping up what I've missed to complete my collection. Funny how this popped up randomly, like UA-cam knew I just bought a Bloodlines cartridge. Thanks for making this video and getting me amped while I dust off the old Genesis.
Only now I saw what is the plot behind it. Eric wants revenge for having his wife being turned into a vampire, and got Johnny Morris to help him. I have no idea where John got the Vampire Killer, though. Btw, It seems like Shadowserg got an altered version of the game, since Eric's hair is actually green in the original game.
The Belmonts disappeared after SOTN and left the whip to the Morris Clan. Probably due to Richter being brainwashed by Shaft. They possessed the whip until Julius Belmont reclaimed it.
It's possible this is an edited ROM; if I'm not mistaken the original US opening localizes her name to "Elizabeth Bartley" instead of the more historically-accurate "Erzsébet Báthory" as this one does. As for Vampire Killer, when it became known that Dracula would revive again of his own volition in the year 1999 (an event which would be later known as the Demon Castle War), the Belmonts decided not to use the whip until that time, entrusting it to the Morris clan, an American offshoot of the Belmonts. It's possible they did so in order to strengthen their own spiritual power over time through abstaining from the whip's usage, since Julius Belmont was said to have been the most powerful Belmont in history upon his triumph over Dracula in 1999. John inherited the whip from his father Quincy, who killed Dracula with it in 1897 even though he was fatally wounded in doing so.
@@atraxos The whip rejected the Belmont bloodline after it was used by a possessed richter for evil. As for how the Morris managed to use it. They were enhanced with a ritual where they battled off the last owner of the whip in order to control it.
I'm not the only one then; that opening text crawl was nothing like what I remember. Nothing about a niece or a wife, just Elizabeth trying to revive Dracula. Also maybe it's the fact that he skips the weapon powerups but those bosses tanked a TON of hits.
@@TheShadoek Yeah, thought I'd leave out the bit about Whip's Memory because it wasn't exactly relevant to *how John inherited the VK*. Sure, it's how he gains mastery over it, but that most likely came later & also involved Eric Lecarde's special power.
This version gave more of an ending to Eric's story then the European version 'generations', it didn't even have any dialogue for him at the end of that version, it just showed the castle collapsing and then just cut to end credits.

Optionally, instead of the "Death Card" it appears the "Fool Card", that provides a lot of chicken to heal the player's HP.
My entrypoint into the series nearly twenty-six years ago. As well as favorite, classic 2D experience. Super Castlevania IV, and Rondo of Blood are excellent contenders, as are they often remembered much more fondly than this title. But to me? It doesn't get any better than this.

One of the best Castlevania games! Your skill is superb as always!
Criminally underrated Castlevania, as far as I know the only game in the franchise exclusively on a SEGA console.
Vampire: Master of Darkness is a standalone game made by a different company, but is so eerily similar that for some people it counts.
