Generally it should be for three types of beam (1) Simply supported (2) Continuous or fixed (3) Cantilever
(1) Simply supported d= Effective depth of beam l = effective length and the ratio of effective length to effective depth should not be more than 12 in simply supported and (2) l/d=20 for continuous /fixed end and (3) l/d= 7 for cantilever all these have been taken after considering the maximum deflection in the beam.

Boss beam depth moment se calculate hoti ha aur moment beam ki loading se calculate hota ha. Method which you have explained will never give safe beam sizes. You have to calculate beam cross section based upon moments and that will come after structural analysis of the beam with respect to loads.

you are right but you have to control the deflection which is due to loading and as per IS:456-2000 we can find out the effective depth.

Bilkul thik keh rhe hain aap kyoki if beam b=230mm,d=250mm then area of beam area=57500squaremm. If we take 4% Steel quantity is 2300sqauremm. If we use 16mm dia bar . Area of 16mm bar is 201.14 square mm. And number of bar in beam is 11.14 approx. I think it is very high quantity in beam.

listen there is no end of maximum , we must see that steel reinforcement should not be less than required over reinforced structure is more harmful that under reinforced. if in any case the required qty of steel is more than prescribed then we have to change the section of the member. As per IS:456-2000 section 26.5, (a) Minimum reinforcement required for beam is As/bd=.85/fy or As=.85xbd/fy in case we are using fy=415 then As=.85bd/415 which comes to 2.0482*10^-3 or we can say that minimum tension reinforcement should not be less than 0.20%of bd (x -sectional area) of beam and Maximum tension reinforcement should not be more than 4% of bD ( Gross Sectional Area) As per IS:456 clause 26.5.2 the minimum steel reinforcement required is 0.12% of total X-sectional area using high strength deformed bar and if we use mild steel then steel reinforcement should not be lessthan .15% of total X- sectional area. As per IS456:2000 clause 26.5.3 the minimum compressive steel reinforcement should not be less than 0.80% of gross x-Sectional area of the Column and maximum steel reinforcement should not be more than 6% of gross x-Sectional area.
