Are you looking for ways to strengthen weak voice? Do you believe that you can improve voice with diaphragmatic breathing when speaking? In this video, I will untangle several myths about the diaphragm when speaking. In my opinion, if someone says “speak from diaphragm”, it only leads to more confusion. This phrase does not really explain what it feels like or how to speak from your diaphragm exactly. What muscles should you engage? What muscles to relax? So, stop wondering how to speak from the diaphragm and improve your voice with more specific and effective exercises.

Thank you for stopping by. Was it easy to count from 1 to 10 with little breath? Write EASY in the comments below.

@@JZ0009 Good to hear. That really shows you how little air we really need for speaking.
@@healthyvoicetips )l))l)
Kinda… I start running out of air around 7, and uncomfortable by the time I reach 10. Yet, initially it feels like a good breath. Aarghh.
you’re channel is a hidden gem
Thank you, Collin, for such a lovely comment. If you have any questions, let me know.
After your first video. I was convinced. The second (this video) I am intrigued. Possibly the next video I will be hooked! Can’t wait to hear and feel the improvements in my voice!
Keep me posted. I’d love to hear from you!
Your videos comes in the right time always, it's like you're ready my frustrated mind
I hear your frustration. Do you want to share more about your frustrations. Maybe I can answer your question.
omg my voice is already 70% better from just using less air to speak! :D Thanks!
That's great! I am so happy to heat that. It is very common to use more air than we need.
The vocal cords leaking air makes so much sense! I've never realized I've been doing that.
I am glad you found something useful in the video.
You’re a genius omg
Not sure about that. But thank you!
Your description of the issue is right on the money. I blow out the air and then can count to 4 or 5. When I run out of air, I engage extrinsic throat muscles which then tires my voice and makes it feel tight. Then because my voice is tired, I engage my "Michael Jackson" voice which is light and breathy but am realizing this is only another bad habit that I have created to deal with my hoarse voice. I do feel the difference when my Vocal Chords close completely and when they are closing partially. When they close completely, I can speak and sing effortlessly. When they close partially, I am breathy and weak. I am currently working on SOVT exercises as you suggested in your other videos and hope this does relax my tired voice and even wakes up my sleepy voice in the morning. Hoping this will strengthen my voice.
Thank you for sharing your observations. You are spot on and it is fantastic that you are aware of all these nuances in your voice!
Gosh you seriously post things at the right time and I couldn’t be more grateful. I’m dealing with voice problems at the moment and would appreciate suggestions:
A few months months ago(probably closer to a year now!) I commented on your video on muscle tension dysphonia. I mentioned I got tired super quickly from singing and sometimes had a lot of tension after talking sometimes. You said that getting tired as a beginner is normal, but the tension after talking worried you, but I didn’t bring it up to my parents because I had no professional opinion and my teachers didn’t mention anything. I finally switched to another voice teacher and right away she knew there was something going on. She sent me to an ENT and my vocal cords are fine. No nodules, no swelling or irritation from acid reflux (which I thought would be the case since I’ve had reflux since I was born). We were both relieved, but my teacher is still determined to find answers as to what’s causing my voice to tire out so quickly. She suspects muscle tension dysphonia and mentioned going to a doctor to examine my neck, but didn’t mention a specific doctor and I forgot to ask before the class ended. Is this a job for a speech therapist/ language pathologist or some other doctor?
To diagnose MTD takes a few people but yes, speech-language pathologist and a laryngologist would be on the team. I am glad that your teacher sent you to an ENT and is determined to help you! A voice therapist should be able to help.
@@healthyvoicetips Okay, I’ll get right on it! Thank you so much!
Good luck!

Happy to know that you find the video helpful.
I was pulling my stomach inside all the time to speak from my diaphragm.
Thankyou for making me aware of this myth :)
I am glad that the video lead to increased awareness! Well done!

Best regards♥♥
Thank you madam... great knowledge
It's my pleasure
Excellent video, the part where you explained that using too much breath to speak causes the throat to work more to manage the inflow really resonated (I feel that especially with singing). Thank you!
I am glad that explanation resonated with you. Yes, higher breath pressures are more challenging to manage!
Thanks
🙏
Easy!!
Excellent! There is enough air for speaking in your lungs!
I feel sometimes it is nearly impossible for me to speak louder no matter how hard I try. Also, during later times in the day, or times during stress, it takes a lot of effort for me to speak.
I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your voice. What you are describing may point to some level of strain or tension in your voice. I suggest that you speak to a voice therapist or laryngologist to get some help.
This is very informative. And really explained how misleading singing from diaphram is. Thank u ma am
Thank you for your lovely comment!
@@healthyvoicetips ma am is it really breathing from the diaphram. Even though I breath from the diaphram why does my throat hurt. Does it fades with the time or am I doing anything wrong?
@@capenterjojo3373 there are a lot of parts to your voice. Breathing is just one part. if you experience pain when using your voice, it can be your breath, it can be the vocal fold closure. I recommend looking at your voice from several perspectives. It's rarely one thing. it's a balance of many parts.
@@healthyvoicetips oh thank u very much. It's good to know that. I'll do some basic exercises from your videos will that help. I see my pitching has improved and stability of my voice
Keep exploring which part of your voice needs tweaking.
Very very easy mam

Interesting. So that probably contributed to my supraglottic muscles being hyperactive. The speech pathologist mentioned my condition is mild but I still suffer because of it. Hmm.
I am glad you have a new insight into your voice. Do you have any questions?
@@healthyvoicetips I need to know what exercises are helpful for retraining myself not to use my supraglottic muscles too much. I blow a straw into a cup of water and do a few exercises in the morning. I'm able to do it and noticed no throat tension. However, the tension always comes back throughout the day. The tension is worse when I subconsciously feel I need to speak louder. I'm trying to develop my social skills and feel somewhat handicapped.
EASY!
You really helped me, I was losing my mind with the whole "speak from diaphragm"!!!
I am glad I could help!
Same my weak voice cost me a lot of opportunities but I will this works out for me now
I couldn’t manage to count to 10 at all I ran out of air & was tight in my chest 🤷♀️
I would look at the vocal fold closure, they may leak air and therefore have trouble counting to a higher number. And do some exercises to release tension from your torso.
Any tips on stuttering in relation to diaphragmatic breathing?
I am sorry but I am not an expert in stuttering.
I have watched hundreds of video on how to improve my voice, all were saying to speak from diaphragm. And you are the FIRST one to rebut this and say this is useless with actual science!
I am sure that there are some people who will argue that they are speaking form the diaphragm but from my 20+ years of experience, this phrase did not help many people. There are more appropriate instructions or exercises that can improve one's speaking voice.
Hello Ma'am. You're channel is really a treasure as I found it owing to a serious problem, and your tips really work. I feel that I've already improved my voice quality but still I'm seriously depressed with my problem. I've felt I'm patient of mutational falsetto, and I'm really lacking my social confidence and being mocked. I can't now afford to consult a speech language pathologist.
I've found you very generous and much responsive to comments. So please recommended me some exercises of voice therapy or some vocal exercises to heal my high pitched voice. If you respond, that would be life changing for me. Genuinely Thank you.
There is an inexpensive vocal training course ($99.)…look up on You Tube Ken Tamplin vocal training. I have gotten this course and my voice is stronger. I can actually feel my vocal cords more flexible. It’s not just for singing..it’s a course also in addition to singing stronger, will repair your voice..or whatever problem you have with voice related issues, He gives some examples also, if you can’t afford the $99 course, you can search You Tube and see some examples which may help you if you practice daily. Hope this helps your voice.
I am sorry to hear about your problem. However, I am not an expert on mutational dysphonia and therefore I cannot offer help. Someone here recommended buying a cheap vocal program. That program is not meant for your vocal issue. Please speak to your doctor and find a way to speak to a voice specialist because your problem requires professional help. I wish you all the best.
@@healthyvoicetips Ok Ma'am, whatever you've advised is precious and THANKS for that .
easy to say 1 to 10!!!
Great job!
While speaking s and z my tongue put a pressure on teeths
I answered your question under a different video.

Glad to hear that it was easy to use your voice on a small lung volume!
But adding more base to your voice is just only possible when you speak by breathing from your diaphragm
Deepening your voice can be achieved in many different way. "Breathing from the diaphragm" is not one of them. That is my experience and opinion. But it is possible that you have a very different definition for "breathing from the diaphragm".
My vocal cords don’t close … if i do the exercises will
It help restore normal closure ?
It really depends why your vocal folds don't close. If there is paralysis or paresis, then exercises will not help.
Hi Mam i'm having vocal cord nodule please make on this topic video thank you

Good job!
Hello mam its been one year i have recovered from covid
But now also my voice is so low
Please suggest me anything to make my voice louder
Please please reply mam🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😭
If you are experiencing voice changes for such a long time, I highly recommend that you see a laryngologist for a voice assessment.
Didn't even need to breathe in first to count. Seems weird anyone would.
I have no voice issue but i feel tension in my tongue while speaking s an d z
Breathing exercises will not be helpful in your case. Articulation exercises will.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful but I do not specialize in hypofunctional voice problems that you are describing.
Mam how to sing the low notes loudly
Lift your chin slightly. But the most bottom pitches in your range will be weaker than the rest of your range.
You still speak thru your nose
Yes, nasal sounds use nasal airflow.
