My voice has always been hoarse and scratchy, occasionally stopping altogether. This series of 5 exercise seems to be helping. I will continue to practice them and if you have any additional hints on how to improve my annoying weak voice I would appreciate it. Thank You Katrina
Also, I cannot sustain the HUMMING NG SOUNDS or MOTOR SOUNDS as long as you are able to. Is there anything you can suggest that will help with that?? Thanks Again Tom
All I can say is WOW!! I sang a little harder than usual last night at a gig. Today, my voice was sounding hoarse and we have another gig tonight!! I did the baseline and at the end of these 5 warmups my voice feels 100% better, hoarseness is gone and my throat is much more relaxed!!! Amazing!! Also, I am one of those who hated lip trills, mostly because I could never do them. Well, your explanation of how to get started with lip trills was so good - I did them! Not perfectly but the first time I was able to really do a lip trill the right way!!! Thank you so much Katarina!!!
You just made my day! I am so happy to hear that these exercises are beneficial for your voice! And congratulations on lip trills. I know that many people hate them!
This is literally the most underrated amazing video. I’ve been dealing with a strained voice for about a week now because I strained it at worship practice and then made it worse at an open mic 2 days later before it really got better. I had absolutely no idea there were excercises soecically to help after you’ve strained your voice. I truly believed that there were only excercises to try to help prevent. Thank thank you so much! I might be able to actually lead worship today after doing these.
Thank you for your lovely comment and sharing a little bit about your voice. Many people don't know about their voice and therefore, I started this channel to spread the word. Let me know if you have any questions.
It works on me,thank you so much for these tips. I'm a worship singer and after our practice for the praise and worship for sunday, my voice always strained and i suffer it for 3 week because of that, sometimes i cant join my team mates when we practice because i'm not comfortable to sing.
The level of your knowledge of this complex subject and your ability to explain it in detail to the viewer is amazing. In a few short weeks that I have been watching your videos and doing the exercises, my voice has improved a lot in strength and resonance without the straining and fatigue of the vocal cords that I used to have. Thank you very much and I wish you continued success.
I strained my voice by conducting hour-long surveys this week (and I'm not used to talking much at all), so I've been looking for home therapies. I did what you said but not for two minutes each. (Was scared of doing more damage.) I just tried them a little bit. I was also drinking lemon-ginger tea with honey in it while watching your video. I recorded the baseline and then recorded my voice afterwards, and there actually is a difference! Not sure how much is from your advice and how much from the tea, but I will practice your techniques next week--after my voice heals--before I start interviewing again. I'll also continue working on them while my voice rests (so I can get back to work!). THANKS! I'm also looking at some of your other videos. If any of my co-workers have the same problem, I will definitely recommend your videos to them! Thank you!
I am happy to hear that you are finding my videos helpful. Let me know if you have any questions. Make sure that you rest your voice on the days when you have to use your voice a lot. Keep hydrating (tea or water or whatever you like to drink).
My sounds are easier to vocalize in these few minutes after a week of my voice back tracking for reasons I couldn't explain. Your exercises in this video are extremely helpful. I've been experiencing voice problems since laryngospasms nearly 3 months ago. But knowing what to do is relieving me of stress and worry about the future path for restoring my voice!
Wow! What a change from the baseline! I had gone from singing for a living to not singing at all for 3 years followed by Covid (wheezing voice, no power or control at all). Thank you! I'm excited to learn more from you!
I am definitely will try this exercise. I've suffered muscle tension for many years to the point that I haven't worked just because If I had to use the phone my throat would close even just knowing that I have to talk. Thank you so much.
I hope the exercises were helpful. Let me know if you have any questions and check out my other videos as my channel is made for people who experience tension when speaking.
It really works, just this week I lost my voice on day 1 of a 2 day event and I found this accidentally. Decided to try it and did a whole post about it. Thank you!🙏🏾
Thank you very much for sharing these useful tips. Applied them in the morning before doing a psalm chant during mass. After mass, 7 people congratulated me for doing it well! I don't normally get so much positive feedback. Will continue with the exercises before each morning choir duty. Thanks again for sharing.
Thank you so much for these! I had an operation on my cervical spine a few years ago (they went in ateriorally) and I have since had to be so careful with my voice as it fatigues easily as a result. I found this video a few months ago and regularly do these exercises before shows/rehearsals and it really makes a difference, thank you!!
I just want to say, thank you Katarina 🙂 the first exercise really helped me more than I could imagine ❤ it lets me find the most resonant tone of my voice easily which has caused me a lot of distress(and tears) for a long time to the point that I attributed it to luck whenever I feel that resonance. I also found out my neck posture was too forward upon doing the exercise. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Katarina 😊
You made my day! Thank you for posting this comment. This is the reason why I post videos here. I wish you all the best and let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you so much for sharing such a great knowledge🥰🙏..it really relieves my stress in voice and after working out in these 10minutes,my vocal just restored and its easy to vocalise again 😃
Thank you, Katarina! You laid out a fantastic warm-up plan. Cannot wait to try them! #1 - Humming "Fluffy Hum", #2 - Sirens, #3 - Lip Trills, #4 - Motor Sound, #5 - No-Straw Phonation (use hand to create occlusion)
It feels better already. I did feel a lot of tension/scratchiness in the larynx when I do the motor "v" sound exercise, and I would like to know how to relax those muscles better. I'll check out your other videos!
Thank you Katarina! These have helped me so much! Muscle tension issues keep coming back if I don't stay on top of them. I have to solo cantor Mass tomorrow and my voice has been tired and tight! These exercises help so much! I just need to keep doing them!
Thank you! My voice felt more resonant and buzzing near the lips after these exercises, exactly what I need as my voice has a tendency to fall towards the back of my mouth. It also removed any effort made in the throat.
My voice has been strained for 3 weeks and I’m so concerned, Dr said nothing can be done except rest- but I work on a phone!! Hoping for the best with this video!!😊
Katarina, thank you so much! I wonder if you can talk about how the vocal chords are closely related to the rectus abdominis, and how tightening the “abs” to produce sound causes the vocal chords to tighten? When you say to be careful not to strain the vocal chords during these exercises, you don’t talk about how to relieve pressure, and I’m curious to learn more about how to support sound from below. Lots of help thanks - voice still a problem and want to get a steamer for steaming voice box in the mornings but not sure which is a good one to get? Is it one that u plug in?
There are different options. There are cordless, which are more expensive. Then, there are the ones that you need to plug in. I made a video, in which I review my favourite options.
I used to sing a lot as a child and my singing was good except now I don't practice as much and my singing is getting worse. Is there any tips on how to achieve high notes? I have a talent show coming up and I'm stressed out. 😅
Without really knowing how you sing high notes, here are some general tips: head and neck anchoring, thinner vocal folds, start with less effort, experiment with the amount of breath you are using, make the sound whiny, try a high tongue. A good exercise is lip trills and sirens. But practice is absolutely necessary. Singing in higher registers requires practice.
There may be many different reasons for itchiness. It is important to find the reason for your voice problem. Cough drops may not be the right solution. If your voice problem persists for longer than 2 weeks, I suggest that you have your voice evaluated by a laryngologist.
Hi catarina,,What is the procedure to treatment vocal module in the earlier stage,,i am a singer but suddenly we know that i have vocal nodule that stay in earlier stage,,please help me.I can't sing as well as I do previously
Eliminate the cause of your vocal nodules. This is easily said but harder to do. However, it is the only way to avoid vocal nodules from growing. There is a reason why the nodules are there - the vocal folds collided with more force than they can endure so re-evaluate the vocal effort and the way how you use your voice. Scheduling voice use and pacing is very important to give your voice a chance to heal plus some gentle vocal exercises.
Hi ma'am,, I'm not a singer but I love singing I'm quite passionate about it I have never done vocal training or stuff and I can't cz my parents won't allow me to, do you have some tips for me on how to train my vocal on my own like ppl say I got nice voice but I feel like I need more improvement. + I'm a 16 (soon 17) year old girl
Sorry to hear that your parents support your passion. I am not really a singing channel but there are a lot of YT videos on how to start singing. I wish you all the best.
My throat hurts while reading, while using phone .. it hurts when my neck is down for too long .. it also hurts while singing.. talking is fine for me.. can u tell me what it is ?
Some people use lip trills or straw exercises when doing sirens to limit the amount of air driven through the vocal folds. Also, inhaling less air at the beginning may help.
How wonderful to have happened upon your video. I have a history of Muscle Tension Dysphagia that resulted from a lack luster tonsillectomy way back when. It also affects how I phonate. The combination of your energy, vibe, speak tone and the exercises themselves are to be applauded. I thank you, kindly.
HI :) First of all - thank you for the channel, it is quite wonderful! Informational, correct, practical. I really appreciate it! I am a classical singer with 20 years of professional singing behind me. I am also teaching students at academy level, and I advice them all to follow your channel. I also am struggling with re-occurring MTD, which is hard, but strangely also useful for a teacher - I know some of the pitfalls, although it is hard to re-train myself. Now - I have a question. I have never EVER thought about this before, but I am simply not able to maintain a "lip-roll". 1 or 2 seconds, maybe, but not more. No way! Can't do it :) Is that ALWAYS a sign of muscle tension someplace, or are there people who are "problem-free" but who cannot do it? I'd really appreciate some thoughts on that.
No, it's not always a sign of muscle tension. There is a lot of coordination of different muscle groups involved. And some people have to work really REALLY hard to sustain a lip roll. Even people who do not have any vocal issues.
Hi and thank you for stopping by. How is your voice feeling after these 5 vocal warm ups? Let me know!

Ok,thank you so much.I follow your channel regularly,,
Hi ma'am,, I'm not a singer but I love singing I'm quite passionate about it I have never done vocal training or stuff and I can't cz my parents won't allow me to, do you have some tips for me on how to train my vocal on my own like ppl say I got nice voice but I feel like I need more improvement.
No, I am sorry but that is not how it works. If your voice is hurting, you need to visit a voice specialist for a proper voice evaluation.
I’m having a problem with pushing excess air when going higher during the sirens and it causes strain. How can I fix this?
Some people use lip trills or straw exercises when doing sirens to limit the amount of air driven through the vocal folds. Also, inhaling less air at the beginning may help.
How wonderful to have happened upon your video. I have a history of Muscle Tension Dysphagia that resulted from a lack luster tonsillectomy way back when. It also affects how I phonate. The combination of your energy, vibe, speak tone and the exercises themselves are to be applauded. I thank you, kindly.
Thank you for your very kind comment.
No way! Can't do it :)
Is that ALWAYS a sign of muscle tension someplace, or are there people who are "problem-free" but who cannot do it? I'd really appreciate some thoughts on that.
No, it's not always a sign of muscle tension. There is a lot of coordination of different muscle groups involved. And some people have to work really REALLY hard to sustain a lip roll. Even people who do not have any vocal issues.
