so nice hearing that learning to sing does take a ton of practice and isn't something perfected in one night. It's kind of intimidating and tough seeing all these amazing celebrity singers on the internet with some even being just 18 and it's easy to forget that though they're young, they've probably had singing lessons since they were 5 and had practiced for years.

I think people put too much emphasis on warming up the throat: I find it really helps to warm up my mid-section with dance like excercises and give the throat a rest, so there is much less tension and more power when I start singing.

@@naritruwireve1381 i can't agree on that, some people were just born with the ability and gift. For people who were'nt born like that it takes a huge amount of practice yes.

God bless you lady. It took me about 40 years to finally hear someone describe support the way I was taught through a book "How To Sing" ( a translation from Italian to English that i deceased Dad bought when he was a young sailor). So many are teaching without understanding, but you are the best I have seen at explaining, and showing so that a beginner can follow you through example. You have my respect added to your list of followers. I sing from Bass to Contra Tenor, and have sang for 10 1/2 hours non stop on a few occasions. I sing pop from the 70s to current, and have 75 originals in various styles. I am now, at 63 about to launch my entertainment career, because the world needs a lot more love and dance.I will review all of your videos as time permits, for you will confirm a lot of my theories I have taught myself. There are a few things I do that might interest you, like warm up without any sound, and then build my range from middle range songs to full scale, increasing my keys about, three semi tones every hour. I also sing a complete verse on one breath. That is where my breathing support comes in as a way of life. It works also in free diving for me, where I stay underwater for long yet comfortable periods.

It is very easy to understand compared to all the other videos I have watched all across UA-cam, in different languages, by different people. Your analogies (in all of your videos as well) make learning so fast. I had to comment at least once. Thank you very much for all your teaching.

Finally. Someone explains exactly what a “full breath” means. I think one reason pro singers, even classical, suddenly get vocal nodules or panic attacks/exhaustion after singing is because the breath is too full. “Take a deep breath” can be so easily misunderstood. There’s always too much of anything.

Luisa Tetrazzini gives splendid explanation in detail of this subject. She also emphasizes a risk i have myself experienced, the risk that you by overworking these important aspects of support Victoria so excellently lays out , you do not pay attention to the necessary air flow and hold it back.
Tetrazzini writes: ”….the pressure of the breath must be felt…..From the moment the note is attacked the breath must flow out with it. It is a good idea to feel at first as if one were puffing out the breath.”
So this idea of consciously letting out air ot or even slowly blowing has many times helped me to improve my own singing, of course in combination with correct support, appogio etc.
I nearly never see this helpful aspect mentioned by teachers, with exception of Tetrazzini, a once very famous italian opera singer.
Source: Tetrazzini, Luisa; Caruso, Enrico. Caruso and Tetrazzini on the Art of Singing (p. 2).
The Kindle edition on amazon is for free!
Tetrazzinis part of this book i find much better and more helpful than Carusos.

Hi Victoria! I've been watching you're videos for a year now and I'm gonna be honest, you have help me improve my voice!! Puberty hitted my voice hard 3 years ago and I lost my singing voice and ngl I sounded really nasal, unhealthy, raspy and many more, but then I decided to teach my self how to sing again last year and most of the vocal coach/youtubers that I have watched haven't helped me at all (which some of their lessons are kinda complicated for me to understand) but then 1 day I saw one of your videos and it really helped me a lot! The way you teach is really clean and its really easy to understand, right now my voice is actually getting better and I think its above average! The only things that I need to practice right now is breath support, how to sing clean cause sometimes when I sing I have this really ugly tone its like a voice crack but it wasn't (I've been trying to find a video about it but I dont know what its called like, and lastly I need to fix the way I pronounce some words cause its like I'm eating the words that I am saying, but other than that you are the best vocal coach that I ever know and I'm really thankful that I've known and saw your videos :))

I'm a woodwind player; sax, clarinet, bassoon. My first revelation was to relax my abdominal muscles when breathing in. That helped. The second revelation, 4 years ago, was exactly - yes - exactly as demonstrated here. I think of it as keeping my rib cage expanded while breathing out through the instrument.
I then found that revelation numero uno no longer applied; breathing-in was no problem, my body did it for me, and snatching a quick breath was a doddle.
Of course, all this was not immediate and sometimes I fall back into old habits.

I am a trained yoga instructor from a long time ago. The breathing and control in the lower ribs (upper abdomen) as well as the lifting up of the chest as if by a string pulling gently upwards were both something I was taught, and not many yoga schools were focusing on that abdominal control. They would all teach to push the tummy out. I hope I understood this correctly. It feel as if I did. Quite eye opening. Thank you so much. Nice to know that one discipline might inform this new one I am embarking upon.

Hello Ma'am! I really love this video and how you MAKE us understand the concept. I've been trying to figure out what breath support and "Breathing from the diaphragm" was all about. Yes I know the feeling of what it is but its just im still learning I guess lol. I really think that you could've gotten to the point quicker. But overall this video is good and better than most videos that teach breath support. OMG I JUST TRIED THIS TECHNIQUE AND HELPEEEEEEEEEEED

As I said at the beginning of the video, My objective was to EXPLAIN in DETAIL what breath support is, and then how to do it. I break it all down. A big reason so many singers don't support is because they don't know what it is. You can't do something if you don't know what it is, if you don't understand it. Happy that it is working for you! 🙂

I LOVE that you EXPLAIN things! Bc you're so right, if we don't understand WHY, we won't do it. At least I won't.
Now I am the type of singer you described who sounds great when singing lullabies, lol. And I can easily do opera. So I've only learned to sound powerful when I'm singing high. I am working hard at strengthening my lower register, and so that I can be as versatile as you are and sing pop with some edge if I want to, which I deeply want to! I've been wondering if I should just stop trying to develop this and just accept what type of voice I've been given, but something inside me is a rebel and I refuse to believe that's all I can be.
My current voice teacher is great, but she does not teach me much about breath support. Currently she is teaching me "twang" to help me project at lower notes, and to help smooth over my vocal breaks. I'm having a hell of a time mastering that...So ty again for this video, giving examples of when we naturally feel that support, and all your others. I will incorporate this feeling into my future practice. 💗

Great explanation! Unfortunately I wasn't ever really taught what support is and had to do research on my own to properly understand it. Your explanation was great! I would say that I like to think of my sound originating at a low point in my stomach though, in order to avoid the throat taking the strain, and in that sense I kind of think of pushing out, which works well for me - but I do understand your point of leaning against the breath.

Glad you like the video! I prefer the term "lean" as in the Italian term, _appoggiare_ . I find that when singers push, then over-support and lock.
