Chris Golden the reason most people keep there’s on when using a spray can is because they’d have to prop up the wheel anyway so they can shoot straight and not pointed down

Firts take the rim of 2 clean it really good best if you use brake cleaner every time you go over it get clean rags or paper towels Don't use the same one 3 cover the logos 4 cover the tire no matter if is black spray paint and the most important of all is if you take the rim off it gives you a better view to spray evenly if its on wen you move your car the rim walls facing down are not going to be painted right

Not every one has the tools to lift it and do that! Then you’d have to get them balanced once you take them off so this is for the average person dude!
Chris M. You don’t need to rebalance the fucking wheel oml. You only rebalance it when you get the tire re-beaded

About getting the spray on the tyres: It's not destroying the tyres. If it annoys you, peel it off easily and after time it will stick itself out so you can peel it also easily. Had it for like some months on them and the tyres didn't had any damages or something like that. Just make sure there is no connection between tyres and rims .

As somebody who has had plastidip for about 4 years and redone it about 3 times i wil give you all a tip. Do way more coats than this guy. I usually do about 7 and one coat of the glossifier. I pressure wash my car and the added layers really really help. Also you may want to mask off the wheels and the lugnuts as the first time i got my tires replaced (with 7 coats on) the dealership guys broke 3 keys for my lugnuts. (I had to buy the next two)
How many cans do you go through for all 4 rims doing that many coats?

I had to revise my comment because I do realize sadly some cars don’t come with jacks and wrenches but.. word of advice, always cover the surrounding area (fender, bumper, etc.). Even plasti dip becomes extremely hard to remove when it’s not a thick layer. Plasti dio overspray is as hard to remove as tar spray.

For all the people saying tape the tire off, my buddy just did his SI rims instead of taping off he got a pack of index cards pinch them inbetween rim & wheel works just as well

I did the same thing. I used card stock instead though. Thicker than printer paper but more malleable than the index cards

Kayserili38ification cause you don’t want that shit on your rubber. I didn’t tape it off when I dipped my rims the first time and I had oversprayed dip on my wheels that just did NOT want to come off completely no matter how much I cleaned them. It gets worse as it mixes with road grime and brake dust. It’s just a mess you don’t want to risk. When I sprayed tire shine on my tires, they didn’t pop as much, or at all if there’s too much overspray.

Not the best way to plasti dip rims... Best way is to take the wheel off the car... This is the lazy way... Sry no disrespect. Just saying the truth.
The point of plasti dip is to temporarily change the color of your wheels and overall protect the original rim from any further road damage. If you were permanently changing the color of the rims then yes, painting the inside of the rim would be necessary. But you get the exact same results doing it either way. And you can see on our Instagram page @throwsomediponit.

Are you serious now? Tools to take wheel off? You can literally find them in the boot of your car. Time?! 3-5 minutes? Spraying takes like 75-90 minutes (intervals of 15 x no. of layers) Your argument is invalid. What we can see on the video is: "how to plasti-dip wheels the shitty way". You see. I do things right or will rather not even try to do shitty job if I can't do it right.

I would've covered the center caps and the tires and stuffed more plastic inside of the wheel for extra protection. And showing the end result would help. My only question is should each wheel take one whole can?

"The right way" my ass. This is the "It's half-assed but still looks nice" method. even if the back of the wheel doesn't show, the dip will last longer if you paint the whole wheel because just painting the front leaves a seam half way that can allow for brake dust, etc. to eventually get under the dip. Plus the overspray. Plus you're painting at strange angles to get the wole wheel and it's harder to see some spots. Plus you're spraying the lug nuts so good luck fitting the right socket on those.
probably the hardest rims I've seen to paint/clean. Lol looks nice!!

I got a 1990 Volvo 760 and the rims are a pain to clean when we had them white. It has like 30 small spokes and brake dust made it look horrible, we took it off and we're switching to black so it looks mean instead of classy

The right way is you should mask the rim emblem perfectly round with painters tape then peel it off when dry, that's how I did mine and it looks better showing the emblem. 2nd you should mask the tire so there's no paint residue on the tire they will flake off when dried and it looks ugly. 3rd you should also cover your car paint next to your tire, the over spray paint will stick to the paint since your car is white, over spray is more obvious, the over spray paint will come off but it's more work taking them out and sometimes from scrubbing too much it'll leave a scratch on the paint.

@@loketiveimau6172 Plasti dip itself comes out matte. But, plasti dip also has a gloss overcoat that you can spray on the plasti dip itself.
The right way would be to take them off. That way you can do the inside and be able to move the wheel around to make sure you got all of it evenly.

Why? You can just peel the dip off the logo.
When you'll start peeling it off the logo - it won't stop at logo - it's a same layer over whole rim - it will peel the rest. It will look like crap with uneven borders.

Thank you taking your time to show us your method and techniques. I was wondering why you put the spray can bottles in a bucket of water. Is that warm water? Does this help with the plastic consistency? I have never done coating, and I am new, but want to explore this option. Thanks again.

This is good for someone who can’t take the wheels off due to my age and not having a job nor tools......teen....... this is very budget friendly solution for a temporary paint.
You don't have to go this intense on it, ive did all my wheels with two cans and it looks beautiful

Yea as long as you’ve got solid coverage you’re good. Plastidip isn’t like regular paint. It’s pretty thick stuff. One to two coats of it is like equivalent to spraying 5-6 coats of regular water based paint. Plastidip is a solvent based sprayable rubber. It’s not paint really at all.

Use rubbing alcohol to take the oils of the cleaner off. Take the rims off the car. Deflate tires if you can’t take them off. Remove center cover. Use real paint because spray on plasti dip will peel and crack remove wheel weights because dip will just bridge it leaving air to bubble. Just a few recommendations if we’re talking the right way

I did mine "the right way". I took them off the car. Plus my lug nuts are still chrome. Looks better that way i think.

Just put some tire shine on tires and peel off when finished. No tape paint won’t stick to tire shine.

EDIT: Sorry, not trying to be a jerk, it's a good idea for those that don't have the tools to take a wheel off, but definitely not the right way.
For those curious on a more appropriate way, remove the wheel, clean thoroughly, mask off your tire with painters tape and paper if needed (yes i know it's platidip still do it.) spray light even coats, once the area is fully covered and dry take your tape off carefully, then put the wheel back on the car. Enjoy your long lasting plastidipped wheels!

Except it doesn’t come off as easy when there’s a million little black dots from overspray on your cars paint job. I’ve done it. Learned my lesson after the first wheel.
If done after reading instructions,its perfect.done motorcycles and rims,about 27 months on last bike before wanted a change..And as far as over spray Mircofiber cloths take it right off..you must not read...and prep is everything.
1st coat is not supposed to cover the wheel entirely. The manufacturer says a light base coat to start then heavier after that.

erik nelson thank u! yeah you can either cover them and peel it off at the end or pop them off, dip your rims, then pop them back in. after re dipping I suggest popping them out and popping back in for a much cleaner result.

When i did mine i just took the wheel off took the valve stem out and let the air out then put a whole bag around the tire then i aired it back up so the back was sealed and i had no worries painting
overkill for plasti dip. that's what you would do for paint.

You can mess up a dip job and still make it look good. Unless you're doing it for a car show or something.
People be like "Take the wheel off...." not everyone has that time or is capable of doing it. Not everyone is mechanically able to take off the tire

The right way would be to take them off and get them powder coated, which is still removable and is 1,000,000,000x more durable than Plasti dip. But ok.
So we don't over spray on the drive . But it's ok on the cars tyres and body
