Well, they did buy the dog with the intention of having a guard dog....growling and biting are part of that. To have a dog be able to differentiate between guest or intruder and acting accordingly requires good training, so glad that Victoria went to help them!
Maya Sonya Exactly, sorry if that’s not how my comment came across! What I mean is that the owners wanted a dog that was more aggressive than the average pet so he could guard the wife while the husband was away. That level of control and balance for an animal that should be friendly with guests and aggressive toward intruders, requires a high level of training, which obviously Jed has not had.
The dog is insecure within himself hence the aggression, which has probably been encouraged subconsciously from his owners....a dog is a reflection of its owner...fact!

American Bull Dogs can be loyal to a fault, especially if he only has exposure to one or two people. This is why socialization and exposure are crucial so they don’t ‘hyper-attach’ to one person which is the case here, I think
Yep mine are great watch dogs, but I can bring them around a crowd of strangers without any problems. They also shouldn't be aggressive when the owner allows people in the house. They should be friendly.
i had an american bulldog and she was the sweetest thing. she wasn’t aware of her own size (she was over 110 pounds) but whenever you seemed hurt she came and checked on you.
I think this is the first time ever that this was not FULL responsibility on the owners for their dog’s behaviors. I understand there’s minor ways they have caused this, but it’s mostly from just how he is and his health. I love this family.
haven't you seen this episode with the dog who as fascinated with shimmering light at the window, and he would only drink at the tap? and one of the latest, the tornado dog? their behavior wasn't their owners' fault as well :)
@@Ysckemia yeah and you could clearly see they loved and wanted the best for they're dog. However it's unfortunate how many of dogs problems do stem from the owners.
Wow, I dont think I've ever seen a dog training show tackle an actual aggressive dog. I would really really love if this episode was considered for a "victoria discusses" special whenever you guys manage to do another!
Positive trainers do this all the time, they just don't demonstrate how willing and dangerous the dog is at the beginning. Because it's really bad for the dog. Every time the dog bites, they become much more likely to bite again in the future. So putting Jed under so much stress and allowing him to aggress like that is completely counterproductive to teaching him not to bite. It impresses the viewers and drives home the message, no doubt. But it is not in the best interest of the dog. Most positive trainers find each rehearsal of aggression so harmful to the dog's progress (and therefore increasing the risk of the dog getting euthanized for future aggression) that they won't set the dog up to fail like that for the sake of a more powerful audience experience. I'm a fan of Victoria but I still find it hypocritical for her to say that they must 100% avoid giving him the opportunity to aggress ever again, but having been being responsible for setting Jed up to bite someone in a bite suit for wow factor.
@@crosita1 From what I gathered in this episode, the bite suit was used because up until that point Jed hadn't actually bitten anyone yet and they wanted to understand in a safe and controlled way whether or not he was willing to. I imagine they risked it in order to better gauge how to go about his training.
@Clarissa Edwards putting a muzzle on is restrictive so it is a punishment and I do go no further in naming all the other punishers used in this framed episode. Still it is a big dog with enormous potential but he is so unsure it's a baby.
Robert Baelen What are you smoking?? I’ve seen the whole episode and I’ve never once seen a “punishment“ for any bad behavior the dog has shown... That’s why in a lot of these “positive only” training cases the dogs revert back once to treats stop and the trainer goes away..
I watched this show growing up, and trained dogs with my mom. Victoria was always been our number one reference. We used her same methods and mirrored her demeanor, we have seen that her method is the most effective. It builds trust and comfort in both parties. Shes really a gem!
I see a lot of people arguing over Victoria's "technique" to deal with this aggressive dog. I dont think it has anything to do with asserting dominace. The alpha and dominace theory has been proven wrong. It is an outdated technique that Victoria no longer believes in. Dogs know the difference between you and them. They know you are a human and not part of the pack, let alone pack leader. And asserting dominance over a dog has been shown to be dangerous as well. People should remember, these episodes are over a decade old. New research and dog training has changed a lot since these episodes and Victoria has changed her techniques as well. Things she used to believe she no longer advocates for. If you havent seen her new episodes where she adds commentary to these old episodes, you should go watch them. She sheds a lot of light of this subject and you might learn something as well. We are all only human. Victoria is capable of making mistakes too and she has.
See but people take that and think that their dog is their baby and don't feel responsible for them. A lot of dog owners lack leadership traits that dogs need.
Ulises Ibarra See and I don’t understand why people use the excuse of “oh I see him as my child so I don’t wanna do this or that, because I see him as my child.” Children need leadership just as much as dogs do if not more! I see my dog is my child but I don’t baby him! I do not treat him as though he is an infant because he is not (if anything, he is more like a toddler.) I treat him like he is in need of leader ship and like I am the leader in our relationship because that’s what I am, I am the leader and I am the teacher. I am the one who is supposed to guide him into the behavior that I would like to see out of him. Babying will get you nowhere when training a dog
I really like how she instills that training isnt magic. that jed will always be jed and one day they’re not magically gonna have a perfect reformed pooch. they have to manage him every day, every interaction.
I rlly need help socializing my 2 shih Tzu puppies. They are great around ppl but terrible around other dogs. Especially big dogs like my neighbors golden retriever. They hate him
@@leahkantrowitz5577 Victoria has MANY episodes on dogs that dislike other dogs. Dogs also feed off of one another. One of them may be totally fine with dogs but only reacting when the other one does. Ask your neighbor to go on walks with you! But look at other videos of it's me or the dog. I'm not a great human trainer lol
@@Southernpinesranch 100% agree. Both my rescues are neglet cases with zero early positive socialisation. It was all bad. No amount of training can fully undo the damage, only instill better coping mechanisms. I believe the vast majority of dogs in the UK are badly socialised. Few can read social cues effectively and many have barely and manners with other dogs.
@@leahkantrowitz5577 If you can get your neighbour to agree to walking their dog along with you while you walk yours, preferably one of yours at a time at first, you may find an improvement. Keep a good distance apart at first and, if your dog lunges, growls or shows any other sign of aggression, just about face and walk them in the other direction for a bit before turning again and joining your neighbour and their dog once more. If your dog is food motivated, treating them as you walk them with the lab can help as well. If you walk them without the lab, use praise but don't treat them with food, that way there's another pleasant thing they'll associate with walking with the lab. You may have to do this quite a few times until the penny drops but it will eventually do the trick so they can begin walking together. It's always a good idea to introduce dogs on neutral ground. After a while, when they walk nicely together, your dogs will come to associate the neighbour's lab with the pleasant experience of a walk so they're less likely to be set off even when they're back on their own turf. If you and your neighbour feel it's okay, you could even eventually socialise them (once again on neutral ground) off lead but that's for much further down the track and not really necessary to get them to just stop going off at the lab next door. The main thing to remember is that while sometimes this can work quite quickly, it may take months before they completely get used to the lab, so you have to do it on a regular basis and be consistent.
I know someone who has 4 guard dogs would maul you if you entered with house or back gate if owners weren't there but once owners let you in doggos are as friendly as anything lol
I hate it when people get a dog and don't make research about training one, if you laugh while he's doing something bad, he will think it's good. That's really not hard to understand.
I admire this couple for being united for the sake of the dog. Don't know what went on before but seems to me they both stepped up immediately and accepted that they'd got one of life's lemons. Nice to see a family that comes together to resolve their combined issues without deflection or blame.
A guard dog is supposed to be protective of it's owners and wary of strangers. It is the responsibility of the owners to train the dog to respond to the owner's commands accordingly.
it seems that this dog however is naturally aggressive, the owners can only decrease the aggression in this case, they are not actually the cause of it. Like imagine a situation where you feel like any action taken is a life or death one, that's the sort of anxiety the dog has, when around people close to you, it seems fine, but when a stranger enters the situation that anxiety reappears and the fight or flight response activates, since in the house Jeb is cornered, he reacts like any cornered animal does. Dogs have personalities like humans do, some can be aggressive others not so much.
@@speedy01247 you made a very valid point but my statement was very generic in nature. Plus, when the guy purchased the dog he bought it for the sake of the protection of his girlfriend among other reasons. My point is if the animal is made to feel responsible for it's surroundings without any proper guidance the results will not be very good. Regarding, the dog's personality well as you aptly put it every dog is different so in every case the owner has to work accordingly.
Jed: I will rip this leash and come to bite your face off.... GRRRR. " Victoria: Gra-ba-ba-ba! Thank you" Jed: I see your the woman of this house now, good day Victoria was it?
Anita H it’s to do with tone if you yell at a dog it’ll see it as a threat or a reason to be anxious, her doing that noise made the dog feel safe because she didn’t respond to aggression with aggression she should the dog that she’s not a threat and that she’s not afraid of him
People that buy these large powerful breeds need to understand that every dog can have a 'bad' day now or then but when a dog of this size and temperament has a 'bad' day it can be devastating for all concerned.
A lot of dogs of "large powerful breeds" don't have this temperament. It depends on the dog, training, and breeding (for example, getting a dog from someone that breeds guard dogs. It is /not/ always a breed-thing). I don't like how you imply it's the breed, size, or body composition that is an issue. A freaking chihuahua can do a lot of damage too. I've seen first-hand as well as second-hand what small dogs can do.
@@MadCheshireHat If a freaking chihuahua shows aggression, you could just pick it up or walk away. If the dog in this video attacks you .. you would have a very big problem ;)
i have a large powerful breed (German shepard) he's NEVER EVER shown any type of aggression towards anyone. It's not the breed, it's the owners and how they choose to ignore or deal with the behavior
I’m fairly positive Victoria is Mary Poppins’ cousin or some ish and just helps Dogs instead of children. What kind of witchcraft was that when he growled at her and she said “da da da bap, thank you!!!” And he immediately submits...smdh 😳 Only Victoria lmao 😂
Well my Dad had Bullies all his life. Never even THOUGHT about hurting him, my Mum, or later on baby me and my brother. Bullies are beautiful sweetheart goofballs. But they MUST be trained from an early age to be good dogs.
Lamiya Mekkaoui there isn’t one breed of dog on the planet that will be a “beautiful sweetheart goofball” without proper training and socialization. If you’re that ignorant about dogs you definitely shouldn’t get one.
@@stacilynn604 totally agree with you. So many people don't understand that training = love because with it you're doing such a huge favor to the dog, allowing him to relax and trust you.
@@torakunoichi Not necessarily. We had a dog that adored us and adored people, but very much didn't like physical fights at all. He'd get in between the parties and separate them. And when a 100 lb half rott gets in between you and tells you to stop fighting, you don't mess with him.
@@torakunoichi Not really. My dad had three Rottweilers who were the most placid, playful things towards family and guests. They loved cuddles and toys, and when they felt stressed, they distanced themselves from the human. They were also highly trained guard dogs and, due to my dad living in a bad area, had a lot of opportunities to keep the house safe from intruders. Affectionate guard dogs are completely achievable with the right training.

I agree: they thought his aggression was something that could be reduced, if not eliminated. But Victoria told them, in so many words, that Jed’s aggression would be there for life and that all they could do as his owners was to control the environment around him so that he never again feels the need to aggress.
Yes, in this case it wasn't the breed not being the right fit for the people at all but social, medical, and individual issues. Bully breeds are often lovable, friendly, cuddly dogs. This one has individual issues.
It's the owners not training hte dog properly or how to behave. MY dog used to bark at EVERYTHING that moved until one day I bought a shock collar and used it ONCE (my mother told me shock collar or he goes back to the pound) I used it once and he is a completely different dog, I got rid of the collar he only barks when someone knocks on the door and it's one loud bark. Train your dog properly and there are no issues.

He barks ONCE when someone knocks on the door then sits down and waits for me to let our guest in, he sniffs, he jumps up and licks and hten goes about his day. You don't HAVE to research a breed to know how to train a dog properly. My dog is trained BY ME and has NEVER had aggresison issues.
@@isabellalockwood5858 Shepherds are not inherently aggressive, that's why. Lol. They are trained to be defensive, aggressive, or protective depending on the situation for police and military work. They are not aggressive dogs, but merely taught that way. I feel bad that your Shep is hyper. Means he doesn't get enough exercise. That's one thing that really bothers me with dog owners. They don't exercise their dogs enough. Honestly, I don't feel you trained him the slightest. A trained dog doesn't jump or lick people.
Awwww once Jed was reassured and checked out with the vet and they started his training he really was a gorgeous dog!, still terrifying with his bark though !
Just a note to people with aggressive/muzzled dogs, don't bother with the cloth ones. They restrict breathing, stress the dog out more, AND they're not even bite-proof. Consider a muzzle with as much pant room as possible. A Jafco, Buma, and some Baskerville's are good choices for genuine bite-risk dogs.
Yeah, she obviously got them swapped from a sleeve muzzle to a basket muzzle that first visit and it didn't make the cut to the show, haha. Basket muzzles are wayyyyy better.
When you get a breed that's naturally protective, exposing them to other people and dogs and just animals in general is important so that the dog knows how to identify who is a threat and who isn't. That dog is protective over her bc he doesn't know who ISN'T a threat. It would also be good if Kelly knew signals to give to the dog that she feels unsafe so the dog can do its job. I often snap to get my dog aware that i'm feeling unsafe of my surroundings so they are on alert mode. If i'm taking money out of the ATM they scan the area behind me so if anything is weird, they bump their nose on the back of my leg to let me know. PLS do research if you r getting a dog for guarding . They still need training.
Definitely get that vibe from the guy. Many men do this. Like woman who think small dogs are a fashion accessory. Men like this think this shows they are tough cause their dogs are. You can see how proud he is at 2:41. Lets see his face when they put his dog down for biting.
I had an American Bulldog for 12 wonderful years. He was so gentle, so loving to everyone he met. He was a beautiful soul. I can't begin to describe how much I miss him. Most of this bread are not aggressive.
Isolation can enhance aggression. They didn't mention how socialized the dog was. But just staying in the house, the dog gets hyper-protective of the house.
its nice to see their love and dedication for Jed. I feel like a lot of people would have given up and surrendered the poor things which would have just made everything worse for him. hes clearly very loved and in a good home.
I love that they didn’t give up on him and have kept working with him. Yes, he is aggressive, but doesn’t have to be put down because he has owners who will put in the work.
Damn, people honestly just dont know how to train their dog, and it always leads to stuff such as violence and humping. I've actually taken advice from her videos and started doing practices she'd said for others to try
I love how she defuses the agression in the dog when she sits down, I've used that technique a few times when working with my own dogs 🤣 I'm glad I'm not the only one who sounds like a weirdo talking to dogs 🤣🤷🏻♀️
See, even dogs can be misunderstood. The existence of this channel and my cat in hell just shows that the difference isn't the animals, its the person.
@Tilly Too well I think it's just because of bad owners and untrained dogs which is why they end up being aggressive, these animals can be extremely loving and friendly, the dog presented her is just extremely anxious and tense
Other then being agressive, that dog is amazing, didn't even mind when his owner reached down and touched his food. He played with other dogs and was such a sweet boy.
Thank you so much for this informative video. One of my Shepherds has some similar issues, albeit not as drastic. However, before we reach that point, I’m going to begin implementing Victoria’s doggie aggression wisdom/training techniques. She’s truly one of the best trainers I’ve watched.
I have a half American bulldog pitbull cross he's fine as long we let the person in. God help them if they come in uninvited. He understands when it's appropriate to be aggressive. These types of dogs need a strong minded owner and lots of training. When they know the rules they are awesome members of the family.

Blue Flare You mean aside from the fact they can still nip? Well they can’t drink, they can’t pant so in hot weather or if a dog has one of those on and said dog is stressed they can’t pant, wouldn’t be surprised if the fabric muzzles prevent them from breathing properly either.
@@danielledewitt1 Okay, I just wasn't sure. I don't think we really had to use a muzzle for our dogs so I don't know which ones are considered good or not.
Blue Flare Yes fabric ones do make it harder to breathe, thought so. Baskerville ultra is what my boy has, only for nail trimming or anything to do with his nails because since the vet accidentally cut his quick he goes for us through pure fear.
I agree. Also my dogs NEVER have liked men in big coats or hats. Like if he can't see them he doesn't like them. No normal guest would walk in wearing that. I understand that guy needed protection from the bite but i feel like it just encourages the dog to bite the guest more

@@Ysckemia yeah and you could clearly see they loved and wanted the best for they're dog. However it's unfortunate how many of dogs problems do stem from the owners.
Ysckemia ^^^
Yea they really could’ve socialized him when younger so he wouldn’t get hyper attached which he did
Wow, I dont think I've ever seen a dog training show tackle an actual aggressive dog.
@@robertbaelen5191 Putting on a muzzle is no punishment. Why would a fitting muzzle be more restrictive than a leash or a collar?

Mrs. Buttersworth Well said. Shame Cesaer can’t be more like Victoria.
100% correct Thank you
See but people take that and think that their dog is their baby and don't feel responsible for them.
Mrs. Buttersworth well said
I really like how she instills that training isnt magic. that jed will always be jed and one day they’re not magically gonna have a perfect reformed pooch. they have to manage him every day, every interaction.
Once a dangerous dog always a dangerous dog. I get the impression this aggression was taught.

@@Southernpinesranch
100% agree.
"A nice cuddly guarddog." Let's think about that phrase for a second.

People that buy these large powerful breeds need to understand that every dog can have a 'bad' day now or then but when a dog of this size and temperament has a 'bad' day it can be devastating for all concerned.
Yeah you can't take a second off. They should have had the dog in a basket muzzle
Their temperament is normally rock solid. They're buffoons like Boxers but not as intelligent.

Not really.

@@Dearmylove_i yeah, you're right. I just thought it was funny how they phrased it lol.
The thing I love about these episodes is that it is fun and entertaining way of learning information for how to deal with dogs
ramdom user so true
