If she wanted to take “romantic walks” with a dog, why didn’t she just take her Shih Tzu for walks? I own a Shih Tzu and he loves going on walks! Small dogs need exercise too!

Same with my yorkie. He LOVES walks! He doesn’t like leashes really but he understands that he needs it for walks so no problem with that either. Tiny dogs are more amazing than so many people think. Not saying that tiny dogs are better, but they are the same as big dogs, just size difference!

I walk the dogs in my hood off leash in town, their owners don't, I can and I do. Being the owner and being the leader is not the same.
"all aspects" also means being free while walking ANYWHERE... if you have a male dog, you should be able to walk him around female dogs on period without a problem.

“Who can walk with a dog like this?!” Lady, I RUN with my dobermans. This dog was clearly NOT raised correctly. Dobermans are high-energy, highly intelligent dogs who need constant attention. They’re not called velcro dogs for nothing lol. When raising my first Doberman, my mother took our boy on runs while she was training for a half marathon. He stayed by her side the entire time and then as soon as she took him off the leash he would go sprinting away like “yippee I can FINALLY run at my own pace!” They’re not couch potatoes, and when not properly socialized and exercised, they get frustrated-understandably!
For everyone interested in getting a dog like a Doberman, German shepherd, or really any dog, please read “The Art of Raising a Puppy” by the Monks of New Skete. I swear, it is the reason my Doberman (the one my family raised) turned out so well. It is an invaluable resource and well worth the read.

because this is a prime example of people who do before they think.. instead of doing research of oh what kinds of breeds would be suitable.. they just go oh this dog looks awesome let's get it.. they should have done some research before getting any dog.. like yes the little shih tzu was a good fit but those are wayy different when it comes to their needs.. my mum often buys animals impulsively too but in her case it is most always an animal she knows how to care for like a little rat.. (we've always had rats and currently have 5 of them in a big birdcage with tons of hammocks and such) my mother is also someone who would take in an animal that has nowhere else to go.. in this case it's just a case of i know i can care for the animal so go ahead (like our two stink pod turtles. the man that used to own them unfortunately passed away and they needed a new home. so my mother took them in. they are now in a big tank living happily) we also have 4 cats but this was mostly a thought trough decision (we used to have only 2 then my grandfather who got sick a few years after they got the cat so he couldn't handle having the cat around anymore so we took him in then about a year or two ago my grandmother decided to take him back seeing as my grandfather passed away 4 years ago.. however being used to 3 cats around at this point my mother decided she wanted another cat.. so we took in a little girl with knee problems the breeder wanted to breed with her at first till she found out about her problem so she wanted a new forever home for her. and knowing how well loved our cats have been over the years and still are she was happy that she had found a good home for her. however my grandmother recently diagnosed with dementia now couldn't care for her cat anymore so we were happy to take the sweetheart back)

@@kellisuzuki8889 Well, tbh dober ear cropping and pitbull ear cropping are two different things. Cropping a pit's ears is actually harmful because they're cropping 80% of the ear, whereas with dobermans it's only say 10%, just enough to keep the ear standing rather than flopping over. It honestly isn't as bad as a lot of people say it is for dobermans. It doesn't affect their hearing at all and although it's purely a treatment for looks it could possibly help reduce chances of ear infections somewhat, as floppy ears tend to breed more bacteria naturally.

And, no, it’s not always the owners, I have owned countless dogs and used my Rottweiler as the example because, even if he was trained, and had great instinct, he was always aggressive, and there to finish business, we had to put him down as he’d bitten over 100 of our guests, and another example, German shepherds are working breeds, and their instinct is to run and attack, but people will eg on that behaviour, by dog fighting, do your research before you comment please.

I disagree slightly but agree for the most part. Some breeds are far more predictable than others for a myriad of reasons. Rescue dogs have a propensity to be more obedient. I have had large dogs being Dobermans, Rottweilers and Boxers - all rescue dogs. Very calm, loving and protective without people feeling threatened. Purchased a Staffy from a Breeder at 10 weeks, had her vaccinations completed as quickly as possible and then had her complete socialisation and training. I still have her, she is seven now, but she has been by far the most unpredictable dog I have owned. I will never take chances with her. She is incredibly well behaved for the most part and loves humans but smaller dogs sporadically have been an issue. As a result she cannot be off leash on walks as she cannot be trusted not to harm other peoples' pets. I wish I could decipher how she reacts to certain dogs why she does but her behaviour puzzles me in that she seems to target some poodles and not others. Can't risk it. It makes me feel sad for her but I don't want her to put another dog's life at risk.

It took my mother longer than that and for weeks she kept saying "does he need the toilet?" "he'll need to go to the toilet in a minute" "when did he last go to the toilet?", so for weeks, every time she said it he just instantly peed. On the carpet, the sofa, me, her, the other dog. So of course my mum would start yelling "no!" and I was telling her not to use either word 😂 I still miss him

Teenage boxers or mastiffs would be a mess in this household. They're no less of a working dog, though the work was a little different. they can be rather heavy (my boxer had ca. 50 kg in his prime , my dogo canario mix now is lighter than him) and compared to some other breeds (in my experience) they need a bit longer to 'get' things in training .
They are a dream to be with when trained, but they can be a f*ing tank if they aren't. They do have a more independent streak and if not properly tained run all over you, they can be rather "unfriendly" towards everyone (dogs, people, children, cats, chickens) coming your way and you most definitely do not want a boxer or any of the bully breed to grow protective.
For a family it is probably good that they are a little less bound to one person more to their home/family, but if you've got "luck" and get one with stronger working drive they most definitely need to be handled by someone who knows what they're doing. With boxers you could get a couch potato, but you can also get a highly energetic, protective dog that gets destructive if not exercised correctly. It depends on the breeder of course but even dogs from the same line can vary in "bulldozerness" and working drive.
If she wanted a bigger dog that's a people pleaser and relatively easy to train, maybe a big poodle might be a good choice. While of course they also come from a working dog background , poodles have been bred as pure companion dogs for such a long time and do really well as companion dogs. If you cut the hair short they also looks similar sleek, which is probably something she liked about the Dobermann.
However of course the smartness and energy of a poodle comes with the "downside" that you need to keep them busy.

Both were amazing dogs to have around and I plan to get a doberman once I can get my own place with a yard.

Me and my doberman are watching this episode together at the moment. He is training to assist me as I am disabled and have PTSD. I got so ill and couldn't do as much as I wanted with his training but he helps me so much every day. He has his good citizen s gold award and hopefully in the future his public access award to. 🤞 They are an incredible breed with so many quirks but they can be stubborn and hard work at times! I wouldn't give mine up for anything. These people didn't have a clue 🤦 training from a young age with these guys is vital

Lucy A, I wanted to treat my Dobies up for the same thing. One was unfortunately born with a terminal, congenital condition that couldn’t have been diagnosed earlier, and she was the one who would have been more suited to being an assistance dog. Her sister ended up being a little more high-spirited and head-strong. She’s still a good dog but she’d probably make a better protection dog. That being said, she still likes to be of assistance and has been known to hand hubby the washing to hang out, help me clear plant-life out of one of our fish ponds and other tasks that she picks up by observation. Love my Dobie :D

I have a service dog Doberman. He helps me function in public due to my autism, and can help with panic attacks and lead me out of a building if needed. Its a shame to see owners who have no idea what they are doing ruin such a great (and potentially amazing) breed. Its also even more sad to learn that after Victoria left, the family did not keep up with their training, and Harvey went right back to being awful. Grounded rules, straightforward commands and repetition is pretty much essential for all working class breeds, especially ones who can be more stubborn and alpha minded. These people had no idea what they were getting into. A Shih Tzu is no where near close to the level of training and leadership a Doberman needs.

I had a spinal injury as a young adult and struggled to stand and walk. Our family dobie, with no training , would walk along side me and help to support me. I'd tell her where we were going and she'd patiently take me the whole way. Such an angel; I was shocked to see a dobie act like this because that's not my experience with the breed at all. Both of ours were shelter rescues, and I don't think they were treated well before they came home with us.

Dobermans are not a dog for a begginers or inexperienced owner.
Very clever dogs that need and enjoys a consistent training with discipline and praise, strict but fair. Its a working dog and needs to work. The doberman will be your best friend if you do this.
I walk a adult male doberman, he's very well trained and a pleasure to walk and play with, if he doesn't like you he plays games and trolls you. Previous dog walker who was worried about him found this out.

You said it...I have owned several Dobermans and trained some for people (and other breeds) and that is one thing about the dog. They are not a good dog for beginners unless they start with a puppy and are willing to get the help of a trainer. Also, they are smarter than some of the dumber humans I know. They will mess with the head of those that they know do not have their best interest at heart or that fear them (or that they just do not like). Even my wife has problems at time giving commands and I have to remind her to never command with a question mark (like...heel? or sit? ). Then she remembers and will be more confident and he listens just fine because my current Doberman loves my wife to death. They need consistent, firm training, rewards and above all appreciation (and no doubt who is in charge). If my male Doberman Banzai thinks he can get over on you...he will. I consider him a great judge of character. One other thing, Dobermans have a habit of bonding with one member of the family (like velcro) and its up to the family to make sure he bonds with everyone.

@@stuarth4296 you might understand this, the doberman I walk picked me, were friends, he knows I will take him on a walk and play and then home for a back scratch and belly rub, the dog will sit on my foot and stick to me like glue when we're together, the owner jokes that I'm his best friend and he likes exploring places with me, I take him out all day when I can, he's very well behaved, follows commands and no stress, he's 8 so he's chilled out a bit? I'm not a expert but I get on well with dogs and good owners teach me stuff.

You are absolutely right! We've always had dogs in my family, but never a Dobermann. When I moved out of my parent's house and got my first dog and I got a Dobermann. I thought I knew what I was doing, but he proved me wrong. Every day is a learning day with him. He's now 12 years old ❤

Doberman was one of my first dogs and I have been doing pretty fine so far, he’s the best, well behaved dog I’ve ever owned.
I would just say don’t get one if you know nothing about dogs, if you’ve researched them you’re probably ok

Getting a dog in order to strengthen a relationship is no different than having a baby in hopes of fixing a marriage.
Seriously since when has deliberately including another life into a troubled situation deemed a fail-safe solution?

Friends of my parents adopted a rescue Dobermann who was abused and was so scared and agressive. They are firm people and dispite beëing a petite woman, the mother is now a teacher and knows about borders. The dog is growing very old now. He seems to have dementia and is returning to his scared behaviour, but for many years he was a great dog for the family. He went from scared and agressive to a playmate for their girl. Amazing to see.
P.s. I love how all dogs have natural ears. My friends' dog had his ears and tail illegaly removed by his previous owners.... So sad to see

couple's like this give me plenty of work in australia as a trainer because they buy a dog based on looks and not what suits them and their living needs, they love them during the puppy stages and don't train them until BAM they enter the teenage years and start pushing their boundaries

... and then many of them end up in the shelters with the label "aggressive" or "unadoptable". There really should be a licensing procedure for potential pet owners (not only dogs, all pets), similar to how you need to get a driver's license before being allowed on a public road.
Come to think of it, a Reproduction License would be good, too.

I don't understand people. Training my dobermann puppy was simply the best feeling in the world. And even when he was an old boy I loved our daily training time. We did tricks and games and puzzles, and then we'd cuddle on the sofa, both of us having enjoyed every minute of it. How do people not enjoy that?

This episodes gives me confidence that I am on the right track with my dog. We adopted a rescue shar pei mix a while back. Unfortunately the rescue had no information about his background other than being an owner surrender for being stubborn. Imagine that, a shar pei being stubborn. I don't know what his previous owners expected. Anyway, he did come with fear aggression towards any new dog but I have been working with him and he is improving slowly. He's become ok with small dogs. I've been using the same process Victoria showed in this episode and it does help to see I am doing it right and that he can get to the point he can be ok with any dog.
