Trying to Fix an Overflowing Toilet Cistern

  • In this video I attempt to repair a toilet cistern which is overflowing.
    This is one of many faults in my house that I am attempting repairs on.
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    As others have pointed out below - the min and max for the level should both be set down. The little white tube protruding from the float would be used with a flexible tube to go into the overflow that adds more water volume down in the bowl.
    Great work Vince! I enjoy how you work things out and get repairs done

    Nice simple fix.
    With mine that was constantly leaking into the pan, it wasn't the overflow but a piece of the in tank blu flush puck that had lodged itself between the flush outlet and the rubber 'flapper' which caused it not to seal properly. Took me ages to find it.

    The hole on top is the weep hole, the valve has chamber on top and uses water pressure on top of the diaphragm to shut off, when the level drops the weep hole is opened releasing the pressure allowing to diaphragm to lift off the seat and let water in, as the level rises the weep hole is closed, that builds up pressure on top of the diaphragm forcing it onto the seating and stopping the water. They are commonly called equilibrium valves or torbec (one of the first companies to make them for toilets)
    You can drink softened water in the UK although it's not recommended for very young children/babies and the elderly as there is a slightly raised sodium level but it won't hurt most adults & children.
    Common practice is to have the kitchen sink cold supply on hard water and the rest on softened water.

    After almost 23 years, I replaced my two toilets' overflow and flush valves using a Korky universal kit. Had to take the tank off, but everything works like new again, no more hissing. In North America, that white spout has a rubber tube that goes to the overflow valve. Not sure if it's the same for the UK.

    In the states, that white fitting spits out water while the tank is being filled and there is a hose connected to it that goes to the overfill tube so that water gets run around the bowl as the tank is filling.

  • @GarthBeagle
    @GarthBeagle 2 роки тому +5

    That is interesting about not being able to drink water processed through a water softener. Absolutely it's ok in the US, we have one as we have quite hard water. We use potassium as the softening agent, though salt is also commonly used. And yes, if we did not use a water softener, our pipes, hot water heater, etc would get quite scaled up, our dishes and clothes wouldn't get as clean as they could, and also it helps with our bathing as well. So yeah it'd be much better to get something if that's possible for you guys!

    Please note, the fill valve typically has a small diameter hose, maybe 6 mm that runs from that white plastic barb over to a clip that directs the water flow from the hose down the overflow tube. The function of the hose is to allow water into the bowl after a flush to bring the resting height of the water in the bowl up to its fullest height. No harm if too much water goes into bowl during refill process, the extra just goes down the drain. Although you could argue its wasteful. It does help with preventing solids from getting stuck around the edges of a lower water level in bowl. It doesn’t appear to be working on your unit, because I didn’t observe water leaving that barb, so i would replace it. A universal fill vale would be fine. Good luck!

    • @paulstaf

    • @kriswillems5661
      @kriswillems5661 2 роки тому

      Yeah, that's just weird. Why is there no water coming out during refill? I mean even if you leave it open the water is not wasted. Why is it closed?

    • @robertking2672
      @robertking2672 2 роки тому

      Not in the Uk, the toilets are not symphonic, they used to be but we phased that type out 30 plus years ago

      Syphonic even

    • @kriswillems5661
      @kriswillems5661 2 роки тому

      In a wash down toilet, or european toilet as many call it, you would even have more need to clean the bowl with a bit of water during refill. I mean, the cleaning of the bowl can be done independently of the fact the toilet is siphonic (american toilet) or not (washdown toilet - european toilet).
      Or is it so that wash down toilets only flush the bowl via the jet and not via the edges of the bowl? In which case the cleaning of the pot would not be possible, because the small water flow would just go via the direction of the jet only.

  • @tiporari

    I would flush and empty the tank, then pull the fill valve and clean it thoroughly. Most places sterilize water via chlorine. Chlorine attacks rubber seals and plastics like PVC (poly vinyl chloride). Replace rubber parts and inspect plastic for signs of decomposition. You will likely be doing this job again. Here in the US at least a complete rebuild kit for a toilet is $20. Well worth it if you make more than $10 an hour.

    I had this issue before. The fill valve seal diaphragm is usually dirty or gets stuck from some build up of scale or some slime/scum holds it open. It's usually located right under that small hole he cleaned up. Most of the time, that diaphragm just needs to be cleaned and if needs to be replaced, pretty cheap. In the end, I would have cleaned up that small hole too and the little rubber stopper under the lever that blocks that small hole.
    Simple and easy fix if you are willing to tinker with it.

  • @paulstaf
    @paulstaf 2 роки тому +2

    Your water level looks too high to where you don't have much leeway until the water goes down the overfill tube. You might want to drop the fill assembly down just a bit to where the water only comes within 1/2 inch (12mm) from the top of the overfill tube.

  • @Blacklab99
    @Blacklab99 2 роки тому

    Just because you hear it close, it does not mean it’s sealed off. Water can still pass the seal if it’s scaled up. The small hole is a pilot which, when closed, allows pressure to build on the main diaphragm, closing off the water. The black seal not seating will also cause an overfill problem. If that comes out, try turning it over.

    What a stupid design. Typical modern cheap plastic crap. The old traditional ball valves just work and last for many years. If my bog cistern had that float valve, I would glue an extra piece of rubber on top of or around the piece already there and maybe a small o-ring around the tiny hole where the water comes out. Should make a better seal.
