    Tate Norio is actually just a pseudonym. His real name is Yasuo Yamane. There is an interview with him in the SamuraI Shodown Neo Geo Collection for the Switch and PS4.

    This game blew me away back in '91. I used to go to a video game store that had the Neo Geo AES and SNES inside arcade cabinets next to each other and played both Sengoku and Final Fight there when they were new. It was clear that the Neo Geo AES was the more powerful system because Sengoku had so many large sprites on screen at once without slowdown, scaling effects, speech samples and a two player co-op mode that was missing on the SNES port of Final Fight. Great memories!

    Thank you sir for keeping series going, I find your narration very enjoyable and informative, we’re excited for more. Burning fight is one of my favourite scrolling beat em ups, people just don’t know or can’t get past the dodgy sound effects

    Sengoku was the reason I needed a Neo Geo in the eraly nineties! I was blown away when I first saw the game in the Arcade in Italy. The Japanese sounds and dialogs, the scenes in the ghost world..... Incredible. I still love to play It, it pure nostalgia 😀🖖

    My brother and I spent many-a-token on the first Sengoku. We loved it, and it may have been the very first NeoGeo game we played on our arcade's "new" red cabinet. I think it was also paired with King of the Monsters and Crossed Swords...I don't remember what the 4th game was (it was a four slot MVS). But I know we played Sengoku first before the other games, as we were avid Double Dragon, Final Fight, and TMNT fans and wanted another beat-em up to try out at the dawn of the 90s. Great memories. I have a MVS cabinet in my basement and still need to get this cart sometime!

    The double and large sword probably does more damage per swing than the single sword but that's about it. One feature the game has is when you're up against a samurai enemy, with a sword in hand if both side attack at the same time, you'll lock swords and can do a tug-o-war style push contest. You can tap the attack button to push harder, until you realize that it's ultimately a futile exercise as the enemy will suddenly sucker punch you, landing a free hit. Another interesting aspect is that if you're fighting said samurai unarmed, you'll be able to break their sword, forcing them to fight unarmed too. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of making the samurai attack far too quickly with erratic movements, so once again a futile thing to do
    One thing the super famicom version did was it eliminated the invincibility frame of the enemies when struck, this way the player can land an entire attack combo like in most beat-em-ups instead of the arcade version where each hit is followed by a few brief invincibility frames to prevent them from taking multiple hits

    Almost to one of my favorites - NGH19 - League Bowling. One of the most fun games with the least to say about it. I'm curious to see how you tackle it :)

    The little time I have played Sengoku was enjoyable. The action is snappy and the change of characters and weapons keep the game varied. More fun than the majority of the brawlers!

    I remember everybody crapping all over the neo CD back in the day because of the load of times, but a bunch of these early games are basically one and done loads at the beginning and not nearly as bad as I thought.

      @@BasementBrothers Yeah, I'm generally ok with that (except the few like the Metal Slugs which are super high), the bigger issue would be the time delay in sourcing the game for a fair price off yahoo jp and it being shipped back to me. =/

    This game gets a bad rap, but I did a full-playthrough on stream back in October, and the worst of it is the stages are a bit too long.

    The traditional style music is what drew me to this game. It adds huge ambience to those battles and I'm shocked you dislike it so much

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  Рік тому

      I don't dislike it. It's pretty generic and forgettable though. So is a lot of SNK's early Neo Geo music.

    I skipped over Sengoku 1&2 to get to 3, as I heard that was the most meaty, and... it was awesome, but maybe I should backtrack a few. The thing is, with those older games, even if they're not as fleshed out as the superior sequels- as in this case- older games from the late 80s early 90s have that special OTT time-period effect, and I can't help but enjoy myself with their raw trippy visuals XD I didn't even consider that might be the case with Sengoku. I'll definitely check it out.

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  4 роки тому +1

      Hi there. Sengoku 2 is generally a fan favorite. I would start there and maybe skip the first one. Sengoku 3 basically has nothing to do with the first two games, so expect a very different game.

    I never played this one. Burning Fight I have played, it's a good one, I haven't been able to 1CC it on hard yet, like I can do with King Of The Monsters, Fatal Fury and Art Of Fighting. It's gonna be awhile before I can practice on Burning Fight, right now I'm trying to beat all 296 N64 games here on UA-cam.

    Does no one else think that the red Jacket character is essentially Michael Jackson!???
    And I don't know if the right name applies but ...
    Jack Stone
    Jackson

    I was aware of the Mega CD port, but I had no idea there was a SFC verson. If you had shown me the SFC version vs either any other version of Sengoku I would've thought they weren't related. Maybe if it had more Megs and took advantage of Mode 7 it might've looked closer to the original.

    I remember going to trade in 11 NES games for a TG-16, and my friend and I ended up playing Sengoku at the store for quite a while afterwards. It never ended. Why is it soooo long?!? Now it ranks up there with Burning Fight for me as one of the most boring Beat Em Ups ever made. Still only game with HBK as the second player.

    I disagree with your protip; I can only do this game on 2ccs , but the weapons power up the extra characters with ranged attacks. I switch to special characters+weapon for really tough areas or bosses, then switch back to normal in collect mode. Also, I believe that every character who is not active will receive time back whenever you pick up a green orb, until the timer is back to 60 seconds.
