Also worth mentioning - When you are choosing a target, say you get a lock in 45km. You don't instantly send your missile, wait 3-4 seconds and monitor how the enemy acts, if they start notching instantly or else, it is not the target you are looking for. That means they are aware. If the target doesn't even move his nose, then you are good to go.
Waiting and seeing is a valuable thing to do in a BVR fight actually. all it takes some pilots is a bit of patience and observation to gain the upper edge- many top tier pilots in warthunder lack that lol
@@blessthismessss Well said. Impatience is the biggest issue with these players. I find it pretty enjoyable when you think about some small details and calculations such as this one.
@@blessthismessss What is patience? XD
Oh and in my R-27ER, I wait until the path is not quite so BVR, which for me is 18km, it usually won’t be able to dodge it.
my radar just either loses lock or they send a missile back, im notching it and chaffing and im dead
this mans explains things better than any of my teachers in highschool ever did
My biggest issue right now is having to fly defensively right from takeoff
On what map lmao. If someone shoots an er at beyond 40 km it’s gonna be dead by the time it gets to you.
@@nyde7705 replies to 8 month old comment from when maps were in general smaller versions and aim 154's were a lot more common.......
@@Craeshen I’ve been playing for a lot longer than 8 months buddy. Maps haven’t changed that much in the past year and ers haven’t either. I got the MiG 29 like the week it came out and if you want a ER kill ur best best is launching under 20km so they don’t just notch and chaff or turn cold/dive
@@Craeshen you can get 50km kills with them but the pilot ur shooting at needs to be oblivious and there’s no way to tell that from a tws lock 😂
One of the most useful videos I have seen thanks a lot, even if some people like me know how to do this, it is nice to see you help new players with BVR
The mindset you want to have with BVR missiles is understanding they operate on a probability of kill. This probability increases the closer the target gets and the more the target is moving directly head on to you. The ideal range to shoot a missile is when the enemy gets inside the MAR (Minimum Abort Range), which is when the enemy plane is so close that they can no longer kinetically dodge the missile. The MAR varies based on what missile is shot and the altitude, but I find 5mi (8km) to be the MAR for top tier missiles. Your missile will do better the closer you get to the enemy, but that is true for the enemy as well. You goal is to try to only take high probability of kill shots, which you'll get a better feel for with experience. I personally shoot at 10mi (16km) at high altitude.
A low probability shot can still be a good move in situations where the goal is to get into a better position. The act of dodging will force the enemy to lose speed and position and make it easier for you to get a kill with another BVR missile, IR missile, or guns. This tactic is great for planes that have four or more BVR missiles. This missile should be shot at mid-range because you need to be close enough to take advantage of their maneuver to dodge. I find a missile shot at from 15-18mi (24-29km) works well at high altitude.
That's not really what MAR means, and either way, almost every top tier SARH can be kinetically dodged at any point other than the R-27ER
@@collander7766 The dodges are extremely hard to pull of in a true neutral position, and requires the player to maneuver the plane in a way that would not be physically possible in real life (or at least physically likely). Almost all dodges at close range occur when the pilot recognizes they're in a bad position and start dodging before a missile is fired because they expect it to come.
@@BulletRain100 I dodge them all the time
the only issue is that anyone can dodge any radar missile by hugging the ground which is just plain annoying
Minor correction. For the aim7f/m the kinematically optimal distance for a hot bandit is 7nm on the deck. Missile will still burn when it hits the target, even if it maneuvers. In wt, 7nm launch gives a target enough time to react and dive/notch, but if you see someone who can't hug the ground in no time, 7nm is the optimal distance
Great Video man, really well explained! Keep it up
Chaff only works against non PD radars. PD radar ignore chaff. But normal search can track better then PD when you fly perpendicular to there radar. To dodge both notch 90* and drop chaff. Beats both radars to confirm no missile hit
the way war thunder models radar, some radar missiles--most commonly for me the F-4E's AIM-7E-2--will continue to track as long as the original target is still within the gimbal limits of the radar regardless of chaff. this occurs a lot in radar missiles at top tier, which is my i utilize non-PD modes on the F-16 when the aspect is hot or notched and the target is above me
@@pocketwingmanthey very recently changed that I noticed, the e2 has been tracking in cold aspects with chaff being dropped which it never did before
@@williewilson2250 i've had it since they first added the E2s a year ago or something so idk
I’ve finally started using bvr missiles and this really helped
It is a very good video in terms of logic and tactics. Congratulations.
Great vid man, thanks a lot
amazing Video thx MAT Very good Info
A lot of times i get hunted down a lot from BVRs and end up hanging them dry without chance to get a kill while they scrape them of my back. It is a pitty that there is totally zero reward for being hunted down and actualy fighting for life
Well these video is really help full
First father. Id like to say thanks for the good vids. Deserve all the love homie
Very cool diagrams mat
thanks for the usefull video :)
gaijin really needs to rework chaff cause ill be perfectly notching a radar while launching chaff and it does absolutly jack shit.
I have the same problem with chaffs. Sometimes it doesn't even work when I turn my back to enemy.
I suspect its because chaff dosent have inertia modelled hence it automatically gets filtered by radar since chaff only slowly falls vertically. Not literally but I could be wrong. Need to test this
works fine for me
@@collander7766 yeah, for me it only works when I'm using radar and radar guided missiles
@@ibum4908i mean yea chaff doesnt have a ton of inertia since its just a cloud of thin aluminum bits. Against pd radars chaff is only supposed to be effective if used alongside notching. And its only gonna get worse as we get more modern radars
Btw matt ur audio from in game is waaaay earlier than the footage
Me doing this because i have common sense and dont just try to fly into a missile
Never had problems with ppl hugging the ground when firing the R27ER above 3km...rlly a little research will show every single site about the R27ER says "Missile cannot be fired at altitude less than 3 km againist a target with background earth, if launch range is less than 6 kilometers." Tho this is only for WVR...
All fun and games until the enemy flies next to the ground because lmao bvr. I wish they'd make bvr a necessary part of the game to pay attention to rather than allowing players to fly low.
Because sometimes the radar manages to lock the enemy but the missile is like cold it doesn't make the red circles before launch what does it mean?
It means the target is outside of effective range or (in case of pulse guided missiles) the missile doesn't see the target
@@user-if4zv5nj5m I use Er missiles but by keeping them locked more than once the missile manages to track and hit
nice but this not work in WT maby dcs not WT, only last tactic work in wt
Notching does absolutely nothing for me... I've tried only notching for above 3 minutes and still the missile hits me perfectly. I use chaff but still nothing.
Make sure u watch the missile and that u are 90° to the missile, also make manuevers
valid points. unfortunately however, the 27ER is in the game
Bro it ain't a sure kill. Just do what mat says. U will live
@@ibum4908the ER is what the e2 was at launch but now it's longer range than anything before
@williewilson2250 both models of phoenix outrange it by 50km plus they are Active radar homing plus at higher altitude they cannot be evaded easily plus the f14 radar isnt as easily notched as the miggers
@@ibum4908 before the e2
they need to fix the rwr in game I don’t even get warnings half the time
RWR has blind spots above and below the plane, so any lock from those directions won't give a warning.
@@Tobias-wb6kd it’s not just that tho because when fox3 go active they’re meant to ping ur rwr but it never does that for me so most of the time I jus have to assume and go defensive
@@dontworry2379 because MWS isn't modeled in war thunder (yet)
@@dontworry2379the phoenix goes pitbull at 16km but for some reason only triggers rwr at like 9 or 10
Also rwr is actually waaaayyyy to fucking sensitive rn, I'm getting spikes from a teammate that's 10km ahead and facing away from me
@@pocketwingman a lot isn’t modelled in war thunder and it’s really annoying
And none of this works in Air RB.
Your explaination of chaff is so shallow and so what wrong. Chaff's signature isn't small, this is not how chaff "behave". Chaff drop creats a little cload of alluminium and actually it's signature large. How i agree with you when you say that dropping chaff when headon with a missile is pointless, in this game, i've seen so many times that chaff doesn't work as it suppose to, on missiles comming from 6.
But it doesn't work every time...Even using all the techniques to dodge a fox 1, leaving at 90 degrees and dropping chff I have already taken missiles. But let's also talk about the RWR which detects the "locks" of allies at the beginning of games while they do not lock you... It's quite annoying to hear the alarm always for that.
