Saved this video to watch on my lunch break at work today (or yesterday, as it's past midnight at the moment). What a wild ride Dennis Dunphy had. I mean, jeez! I've always been vaguely aware of D-Man's character, likely getting him confused with Wolverine when I was a kid, but seeing his start with the Thing in just the parts of the comics you highlighted gave me huge respect for him. I remember my brothers having some of the Captain America books you highlighted, brought back some memories of sneak-reading their comics whenever I could. Watching Dunphy's early appearances in Thing's books made me think, he's pretty similar to Ben Grimm in personality and personal code. I can imagine a What If scenario where Grimm might've turned out a lot like Dunphy in his Thing appearances if he hadn't been on that fateful voyage that made him the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing. I see a lot of similarities in how Dennis Dunphy's character was handled by writers/ editors to how Sharon Ventura's Ms. Marvel/ She-Thing was handled. I really appreciate how earnestly and considerately you spoke about the multiple changes to D-Man's character and specifically the decisions to make Dunphy homeless and later gay. You didn't shy away from the elephants in the room, you didn't self-censor about changes you dislike to a character and you did both without demonizing or belittling anyone who likes/ dislikes classic or current D-Man. After watching this video, I really wish his character had gotten some solid storytelling footing in his late 80s/ early 90s run and had caught on. After losing his orignal powers, it would've been a perfect time to introduce a story where he got new explosive powers that played into his Demolition Man name. Could've given him an archenemy in someone like Nitro, akin to Wolverine and Sabertooth having similar abilities. Would've liked to have seen him get his own costume/ look in that early 90s comic era style. He potentially could've had a Wonder Man-like set of explosive powers that maybe could've incorporated strength like he used to have. He could've gained the ability to transform into sentient living kenetic energy and be able to channel and manipulate kenetic energy that he could detonate to cause explosions and also absorb kenetic energy when taking on villains like Nitro. Captain America used to have such a varied array of supporting characters back in the day, it feels like Cap's only friends that Marvel regularly focuses now are revived Bucky/ Winter Soldier and Falcon. Really enjoyed the classic wrestling style intro for this vid and the way you changed up your appearance to match Dunphy's different stages as you touched on them. Thank you for all the energy and effort you put into this and all of your videos. I haven't been commenting as regularly in recent weeks, been handling and sorting out some stuff, but I have been watching and enjoying. Eagerly looking forward to your future vids.
Great video, always loved the idea of d man. Marvel has a track record of depowering characters and making them just kinda community managers or prison guards????? I like that d man still likes to help people, it fits for him, however I'm disappointed that not a single writer has made the homeless and wrestler connection and seen how much it reflexs real wrestlers, alot, even ones who end up in the wwe, before working there are living off of nothing for years while being very popular and known. The stories almost write themselves. If you write a d man series or limited series that just shows how he scraps by and goes on doing it because it's what he enjoys to do and that he loves genuinely inspiring people even though he has nothing but community, could be very inspiring, not to mention the plays you can do on the world of wrestling. He's a character built around helping others, and for his whole life, he'll be 'the wrestling hero', so he should be taken back to that, keep his more level headed and have that personal touch to helping people with the land scape of what modern comics marvel wrestling could be. I think it could be a really good idea. Im just fan writing now, but i mean, come on. A spiderman, thing, or she hulk crossover cause wrestling. Ah, would go hard.
As a Michigander I feel the only thing I could possibly contribute to this guy if I were to write him would be throwing in references to Michigan things, maybe make him a redwings fan or have a fondness for coney dogs or an irrational dislike of foreign cars or fully rational dislike of Ohio.
I remember as a little kid I had this big book on marvel characters and I saw demolition man in the book and I thought he looked cool but I did think he looked like wolverine and daredevil and I then decided I liked him so I’m happy he’s getting attention now
I have to agree with your opinion on Bendis. He did his best when he was doing Ultimate comics BECAUSE the whole point was to take characters you know and add his own twists to their lore. It became frustrating when he moved to the main universe. He also had the worst run on Moon knight i've seen (admittedly i haven't read everything).
yeahhh....this is a sterling example of supporting characters that get tossed into a dumpster. literally, in this case. and i MISS the Unlimited Class Wrestling. it was a fun concept. then it got shoehorned into just another red skull minion storyline. He COULD be cool..but instead he's used as toilet paper.
I love your channel and look forward to your videos every week. I loved when I was collecting Captain America comics and have most of the ones with D Man. He was such a great and heartfelt character. His suit was cool and I like the inspiration he had from Daredevil.
Absolutely pro-wrestling could be a competition amongst Meta's for many reasons, such as they need the money i.e. Peter Parker. That could be a nice chunk of change even if you were already doing pretty well for yourself. Others might do it for reasons such as Wildcat's motivation in Justice League animated series. There's going to be some egos who like the notoriety and it'd be a great place for getting paid to fight a grudge match or simply to help keep Meta's sharp (or out of boredom) during a lull in their typical 'Meta activities'.
First time on your site due to D-Man and now subscribed. Used to read comics in the 80's and loved his time in Captain America issues. From there on I would see him sporafically pop up. It's nice to see a good recap of his entire history. Thanks. :)
I agree with most of your takes, I really thought the jokes by Bendis was a disservice to the character that had been established. Bendis has a weird way of taking characters and doing something with them, that is out of character, whether it's attempting to make the Hood an actual A level villain (which was always a ridiculous thing, that he kept trying to force) or him treating minor characters as prop characters for his talking heads... he just never really got the appeal of minor characters.
It's not just minor characters. Bendis always gave me the feeling that he didn't care about the established character of any character; he only saw them as names and outfits, and simply wrote/rewrote the rest to fit the stories he wanted to tell. It didn't help that Bendis tended to write one "voice" for all of his characters.
Holy shit, it's so rare to find a non-leftist-centric youtuber who has a level-headed take on trans people just existing. I appreciate you frankly stating the story isn't for you, but you think there being space for it is fine. That's where I find myself too, that particular comic honestly sounds a bit vapid, but who cares? Not everything can be for everyone, and if it helps some trans kid feel more comfortable with themselves, who cares if it makes me a 30 year white guy cringe a bit? I cringe at children's cartoons and car shows too yet am still glad they exist for their audiences. Sorry for rambling, subscribed for being a decent person.
Well, to be fair, he reviewed the 1980s comics . You know, when comic books we're actually "fun and entertaining" for anyone to read , if he was talking about a 2024 Marvel comic, be unbearable to watch lol
@@joezar33 My comment is in response to his comments on a new infinity comic starting D-Man. So maybe watch the video instead of being a walking joke buddy!
I'm confused about the "non-leftist-centric" part. Has Hausmann made his political affiliations known somewhere? Not that I need to know what they are; it's just that your phrasing has me curious. And this is a genuine question, btw. I mean no disrespect to anyone.
I believe she just got a sperm donor......no reason ole D-man couldn't have been banking donations while he was homeless haha.......well no reason besides a background check
I was disappointed that the Lego Special basically just took the character design and name and basically just made him Emmet from the Lego movie However That existing caused you to make this awesome video about 1 of my favorite underrated comic characters so I can forgive the Lego Special
I hadn't even seen a trailer until I was editing this video. Then yeah, seeing the trailer I was like.....that's not D-man. But yes, as you said it gave me an excuse to read all of these and they Lego shows are usually fun
For the record, just so you know, Gilgamesh is one of the Top 5 physically imposing & superhumanly strong Eternals, alongside Ikaris, Hyperion & Thanos
He spent more than half of his Avengers run unconscious before they left him back with the Eternals. I have no issue with the character,, he was probably my favorite Eternal in the film. But as an Avenger? The forgotten one is best left forgotten
Finally, D-Man getting some recognition!! Gay story arc aside, D-Man was always a favorite of mine. Captain America issue 330, volume 1, is one of my favorite comic books of all time. Captain America was fighting against some super soldier rejects and eventually ran into D-Man, who had been augmented beyond his capacity to handle the chemicals. D-Man nearly took Cap's head off a few times in his rage, and the fight panels were just amazing. Eventually, and all Cap could do, was push D-Man to his limit which induced a heart attack and nearly killed him. Amazing comic, check it out if you haven't already and can find it, Haussmann! (Part of the Power Broker arc)
He lost his powers bc that was a period where comic writers were bringing up a lot of class b and c characters to do dramatic things to them and quite frankly usually didn't even know the basics of the characters they were using
New to the channel, started watching a couple of months ago or so. Love the obscure characters you cover some I already know about and you go more in depth others I dont know nothin. This video came out right in time, I saw D-man in an ad for the new lego thing and the comic character in a few places and wasnt sure if he was Daredevil or Wolverine.
Since you mentioned Frank Tieri, I think it would be cool if you covered the Champions of Angor, aka DC's equivalent of the Avengers. Or, you could cover the Squadron Supreme, Marvel's Justice League.
I problem with going cheap on a D-Man figure, basically just using the First Appearance Daredevil body with a brown suit Wolverine head on top is D-Man's build is so much bulkier than Daredevils.
Maybe he's bisexual and goes by V-Man once in a while. I read the one Voices story in the big Pride issue. As a trans person, I speak for all trans people (HA!) when i say it was pretty good.
after watching your video it made me remember the first time i read the Thing becoming a wrestler at that time i thought D-man had potential as a new character. however i think it is more accurate to say that he is kind of a representation of the comic book industry as a whole. where it was redefining itself and finally started to focus more on the sexual preference of non straight characters instead of storyline quality. i think we are starting to see a slight turn in some cases back to focusing on storylines, i would like to see a good writer pick up the broken pieces of D-Man and actually turn it around into a good story acc ...thanks for the video
There was one issue of Sam Wilson Captain America that was D-man centric and it focuses on him returning to wrestling to headline a show for charity against Battlestar. It was really good actually
12:20.......? Gilgamesh, the epic sumerian story, is in the Marvel universe ? I never knew that , man. Seriously, Gilgamesh was a total D**k is the RL story , Enkidu was technically the hero. Would've made more sense to have him instead
I always really enjoy your videos, man. For starters, you remind me so much of an old buddy of mine who I haven't seen in ages. We were both massive comic superhero fans. Secondly, I just love more intimate deep dive videos on obscure lesser known roles. I know almost nothing about D Man outside of, well, he just exists. Like I know of him or who he is, but that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge beyond he was a wrestler. He always cracked me up because, well, I'm not entirely through the video yet but I assume you even mention...but let's be honest, he's basically Daredevil's original costume with Wolverine's mask. You're right, though, sometimes it has a more Batman look. What I didn't know was that he outright admits it's basically a ripoff costume. I always kind of like when they do that and make it make sense within the continuity itself. Plus yeah, being in pro wrestling...he WOULD have tailors for costumes. D-Man is a D lister with an A Tier heart! He's STRANGELY likable. His heart helps, the guy is a good guy. But man, I had no idea that his history is SO unstable. Past his initial appearances, the guy basically just becomes a blank canvas for whoever comes along. He's ALL over the place. From Cap's newest sidekick to homeless hero, from mentally insane joke to Trans kid propaganda peddler. Shame he got used less as a character and more as a vessel to filter the authors personal activism through (alas...modern comics in a nutshell...and they wonder why they don't sell), I hate when that happens and it's so utterly cringe...BUT I mean, yeah, it is D-Man, not like...Captain America or Daredevil. It's a shame because, if they just stuck to the original concept OR at least the hero who fights for the homeless...he could have been something. But he just became a character used to try out ideas and see what stuck. Sadly, pretty much none of it did. Fascinating and also, well, a bit sad. Not sure how you go from former pro wrestler turned superhero to Trans kid activist but that pretty much solidified he's just a punching bag surrogate role for WHATEVER the writers want to try. Literally whatever. Need I mention that making D-Man gay lends itself to the easiest joke ever...and I refuse to believe I'm the only one who thought this. The role had potential...and was even making it somewhere once. Now he's just destined to stay in the D tier.
lol, you are more charitable than I...they broke me eventually...i read little new/modern comics & I wholly blame the hateful ideology for destroying them
I appreciate your having a mature attitude towards the evidently forced inclusion of trans and lgbt elements in modern comments. Admitting it’s not for you but not being incredibly spiteful about it while still criticizing it.
As a D-Man fan from back in the day, and having read *every* comment and reply under this vid, and as a queer, trans person, all I could think was -- SHIT!! DID I HIT THE LIKE BUTTON?? Yes. Turns out i did. Thank you.
Haven't finished the video yet, I'm guessing the fifth stage I won't guess will be either A) a romance with black widow or B) he literally goes to hell
Haha, I mentioned D-man being a former wrestler. Though I love Wrestling, and I did have aspirations when I was younger I have yet to step into a ring. I do have some friends that wrestle with local promotions though. So I am just on the outside of that world
vampire silliness...yeah, it's still surprising, but shouldn't be, that handbook type entires & then the inernet are SHITTE at a characters super powers & how strong they are...followed up by hack writers that use only those as sources
@@marvelmite1 it's a decent soundtrack and I chose it because D-man maybe got turned into a vampire once.....but not really. It was a loose connection at best
Wow just thanks. One of my favorite sidekicks of cap is ruined. But bendis did this with every mark gruenwald character he could get his hands on. UsAgent=dumb right wing fool. Battlestar=dead(btw) this Pissed me off that he wasnt picked to be the new cap. It's red and yellow with a big D on the chest. You can't get more Daredevil than that. Lol. I do think the cowl looks more like Hawkeye's than Wolverine's, though.
Earlier on,i posed a question about other homeless heroes and villains in other comic companies but my question was somehow erased/ignored,so how about it: R there OTHER homeless heroes and villains in other comic companies???
if only they pushed this character nighthawk, in action figures like from mafex, mezco and in live action non race/ gender , i would say d-man but making him gay was cringe and yea no need to support that modern take.
I like you. You seem like a really nice knowledgeable guy. A little advice and this is not being mean I like you, but if you are going to get on camera comb your hair and wear a nice shirt. I’m sure a lot of people don’t take you seriously because of it. You have a good personality and I like the way you break information down and use of graphics.
Thanks for the tips! This particular video my look changed a few times along with the stages of D-man's character. But in general I do kind of just film in whatever I'm wearing. I will be more conscious of that moving forward, thank you
@@moldvox I meant no malice. I really like this guy. 😊 When I put on the video I was taken aback by his appearance. But I’m not one to judge. I wanted to hear about D-man. He did a great job. I thought maybe some other people wouldn’t take him seriously if this was their first time to the channel so I wanted to give him some advice. It’s good advice. You wouldn’t go to the office with your hair greasy and uncombed. It’s sad that people judge on appearance, but they do. In work presentation is everything.
Notice how they initially just confirmed "Yep he's gay" and as you said. No big deal that's how it should be treated, next thing you know with how awful Marvel comics has become suddenly it's now his whole personality where he holds meetings. These characters always end up becoming a writers self insert and it's just so embarrassing.
Like when Iceman went from being straight to being gay, but didn't just become gay, but the most cringey stereotypical gay. The kind of gay you'd think would be written by an extremely homophobic person. But that's the problem when your only criteria for a writer for a gay character is that they're gay. A good writer? We don't need no stinking good writers.

D-man looks like a mixture between daredevil’s old costume and Wolverine.
I was about to say that.
From everything I know that's intentional. Both in and out of universe
Clearly, he's more wolverine with all the times he's died and come back.
He’s definitely coming to the MCU soon if they made a Disney+ Lego special directed towards him.

As an Ohioan, you're correct that the dislike would be fully rational.
Yeah they didn't really do anything with that outside of mentioning it once.
I could see Dman rocking a Yzerman jersey in his down time
The last time I saw D Man was when he was part of Wonder Man's Revengers
I remember as a little kid I had this big book on marvel characters and I saw demolition man in the book and I thought he looked cool but I did think he looked like wolverine and daredevil and I then decided I liked him so I’m happy he’s getting attention now
Another great show! It reminds me of reading and rereading my issues of Marvel Universe. I used to run Marvel RPG and love using all the b listers.
Agreed. His moon knight would have been cool in another universe....but yeah, main Universe it was disrespectful
yeahhh....this is a sterling example of supporting characters that get tossed into a dumpster. literally, in this case. and i MISS the Unlimited Class Wrestling. it was a fun concept. then it got shoehorned into just another red skull minion storyline. He COULD be cool..but instead he's used as toilet paper.
That's some impressive introduction at 2:46 😮😮😮
Thanks. I'm sure my neighbors were wondering what I was doing while I was recording it haha
Death can't hold D-Man! He is da man.
I love your channel and look forward to your videos every week. I loved when I was collecting Captain America comics and have most of the ones with D Man. He was such a great and heartfelt character. His suit was cool and I like the inspiration he had from Daredevil.
I learn a lot from this channel
I like hearing that, thank you
Totally. I'm becoming more of a fan of the books from the 60s - 80s. @@HaussmannComics-xd3gn

Thanks. :)
Welcome aboard! Glad you enjoyed it
I agree with most of your takes, I really thought the jokes by Bendis was a disservice to the character that had been established.

Jason Aaron too.
Being a decent person is all I aim for haha. But thank you. You pretty much summed it up.

Well... Hauss doesn't look like a twink... so...
Assumptions were made.
I thought he was Spider-woman's baby daddy. Remember that comic where she was pregnant?
I believe she just got a sperm donor......no reason ole D-man couldn't have been banking donations while he was homeless haha.......well no reason besides a background check
To me d man looks like if daredevil and wolverine had a baby
D-man wasn't a bad character. But the "writers" later on just took a huge crap on him.
I first read D Man when he was found living with Eskimos in the Arctic. Later he was mute and lifting weights with Steve Rogers.
D-man is no joke my fav hero so much so I’m known as the d-man guy on twitter . So glad someone making a video about him
I liked him in the cap books when Steve gave up the shield and costume
I was disappointed that the Lego Special basically just took the character design and name and basically just made him Emmet from the Lego movie
However
That existing caused you to make this awesome video about 1 of my favorite underrated comic characters so I can forgive the Lego Special

There are very good reasons why Gilgamesh is called “The Forgotten One”
17:24 Oh snap it's that guy from U.S. 1
Glad you like them!
Since you mentioned Frank Tieri, I think it would be cool if you covered the Champions of Angor, aka DC's equivalent of the Avengers.
Or, you could cover the Squadron Supreme, Marvel's Justice League.
That isn't a terrible idea at all
I cant even find a legitimate list to know if I git every appearance. Every one I find seems to be missing a ton of books

D-man and V-man, that's hilarious haha
I love this lol
He's kinda sad
No cap 😂
23:41 you can probably take the first appearance Daredevil and just put any Wolverine head on it and be good
Nah, not bulky enough
Daredevil is called Demolidor (demolition man in a free translation) in Brasil
Awesome
Dennis got to shower with Steve? Lucky.
Lol
after watching your video it made me remember the first time i read the Thing becoming a wrestler at that time i thought D-man had potential as a new character. however i think it is more accurate to say that he is kind of a representation of the comic book industry as a whole. where it was redefining itself and finally started to focus more on the sexual preference of non straight characters instead of storyline quality. i think we are starting to see a slight turn in some cases back to focusing on storylines, i would like to see a good writer pick up the broken pieces of D-Man and actually turn it around into a good story acc ...thanks for the video
Can you make a video about Guy Gardner?
I could......and might....I'll do some reading
I think they should lean into the wrestler aspect of him more i think that could be fun or just chuck him on the great lakes avengers
There was one issue of Sam Wilson Captain America that was D-man centric and it focuses on him returning to wrestling to headline a show for charity against Battlestar. It was really good actually

Thank you
lol, you are more charitable than I...they broke me eventually...i read little new/modern comics & I wholly blame the hateful ideology for destroying them

We don't need no stinking good writers.
