  • Poor Things is a 2023 science fantasy black comedy film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara. It stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.[5] Based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray, the plot focuses on Bella Baxter, a young woman living in Victorian era London who, after being crudely resurrected by a scientist following her suicide, runs off with a debauched lawyer to embark on an odyssey of self-discovery and sexual liberation.
Poor Things premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2023, where it won the Golden Lion. It was released in the United States on December 8, 2023, and in Ireland and the United Kingdom on January 12, 2024, by Searchlight Pictures. The film received acclaim from critics, particularly for Stone's performance, and was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review. At the 81st Golden Globe Awards, the film won Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Actress - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Stone. It was also nominated for 13 Critics’ Choice Awards (including Best Picture), with Stone winning for Best Actress.

I’m thrilled to see that you loved this film as much as I did. The only thing that took the shine off for me was that my husband and I took our nearly 18 yr old to see it and he was clearly uncomfortable watching it with us because yes, it is very sexually explicit. I should’ve heeded the warnings. 🤦🏻‍♀️
The 2.5 hours flew by for me, but I can imagine the film being a bit of a Marmite experience - you’ll love it or hate it. I’d give it 99/100 because of my poor son squirming. 😅

Great comment , totally agree but yet how much does your experience tell us about how we pre condition all genders in society? At 18? There should be no embarrassment ❤

Absolutely LOVED this film !! - the visual world it created was so fascinating and so immersive that I started to wish the real world actually looked that way - the whole concept in regards to what would happen if a child’s mind was put into a woman’s body and how throughout the film her mind matured and she was exposed to the harsh realities and imperfections of society and the portrayal of what these realisations felt like for someone to find out for the very first time was so interesting. I found it incredibly refreshing to watch something that was so original in its nature, it used the themes from Frankenstein of a scientist as God but explored them so uniquely and didn’t hold back and hide away from the ‘shameful’ parts of life and womanhood xxx

Definitely recommend the novel too, it borrows some of the epistolary form from Frankenstein and its politics are another fascinating element which is more latent in the film. Enjoyed both immensely !

I’m an Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo fan but wasn’t sure it was for me, though you’ve piqued my interest. Wow 100!! I’ll have to give The Favourite a proper watch too.

I was a little nervous about watching this film in terms of the genre mainly, I'm not really a sci-fi or fantasy lover, and I doubted that I'd stay interested throughout. But I really bloody enjoyed it! And it definitely helped having watched your review beforehand, so thank you for that. xx

Great review and I thought it was brilliant too. Also William Godwin a political philosopher was Mary Shelley's father.

I found the over sexualisation a bit much. I am a very sexual person but found it boring in the end.

I liked the fact it wasn't exactly the original... And thought the musical bit didn't seem too much . I agree Olivia Colman was too much herself in a way ... Too enthusiastic. 😊 . But I did like it and prefer it to Johnny Depps personally . I do agree with you mark could of been a little more Dahl..ISH 😊 .

I couldn't stand this movie. I think it is reductive, basic and offensive. It goes against everything it is trying to say. Her evolution is basically connected to the amount of sex partners and sex she has.
