I have to say, while Emma’s performance was courageous and exemplary and worthy of praise, I feel the world has somewhat overlooked Mark Ruffalo’s incredible turn in this film. The devious, devilish facade masking deep insecurity and fragility is played with such delicious comic effect. The two of them together are marvelous.
I'd also add Willem Dafoe to the mix too, who was remarkably subdued throughout. Actually the MVP of the movie overall for me was Willem (who would've been my pick had he been nominated), although I'd have voted for Ruffalo among those who did get nominated.
Honestly Ruffalo should've gotten the oscar over Downey. His performance was transformative and so fun to watch. Also Dafoe should've also been nominated.

I think Mark deserved best supp actor over RDJ. I feel like RDJ's win this year was the same as Jamie Lee Curtis's last year, neither actually deserved it. But it seemed to be for the accumulation of their work, which I disagree with. It should be based solely on that film, role, year, and category.
Love this movie so much. Emma said it best for me when she accepted her golden globe “this is a rom com, but in the sense that bella fell in love with life itself. She accepts the good and bad in equal measure and that really made me look at life differently” Such a deserved oscar.
I agree. I saw this on Hulu after she won the Oscar and I was very impressed by Stone. She literally goes from an infant like state to a fully educated, self-aware, and self-confident person over the course of the film and she also has to play every stage in between as she discovers more about herself and the world around. That range is so insane to have to comprehend and do convincingly.
Whoever thought that charismatic girl from Easy A would go on to be such a prolific force in the industry. Emma is something to behold in this film, and she absolutely deserved her Oscar
I actually had that feeling about her from superbad, that she was going to make an impact. I hoped she would be hugely popular from my first exposure to her work. Her talent is undeniable, one of my absolute favorite actors.

This was an unalloyed delight! So glad you enjoyed the movie - I've enjoyed previous Lanthimos films despite a streak of cruelty that runs through them, but this was the first of his I've seen with moments of genuine kindness and empathy. It's an extraordinary film, visually stunning, funny and shocking as hell, thought-provokingly transgressive, and in the end deeply moving.
This movie made me laugh harder than any in a long time. Just great writing, acting, and direction...they knew exactly the tone they wanted and nailed it.
Yeah, it hits the tone of the book pretty well, well it doesn’t quite get the more horror aspect, but it does get the dark humour and social commentary sex farce quite well.
Emma’s Oscar was so well deserved (although Gladstone winning would’ve been equally great!) as well as those wins for Production/Costume Design and MU&H. One of my favorite movies of last year.

Have you seen THE FAVOURITE (2018) (same director with Emma Stone also being in the cast, along with Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman)? I found that to be way better than this in my view. Funnily enough, Olivia Colman won Best Actress for that one (the director Yorgos Lanthimos is on something of a streak with these 2 movies winning that category).
@@axr7149I have not. My mom's birthday is the reason we went to the theater to watch this one. There wasn't really anything else out at the time and we saw great reviews, comedy and drama and just went for it since there was nothing else out at the time.
2023 was one of the best years for movies in a long time... Poor Things, Barbie, Oppenheimer, They Cloned Tyrone, Killers of the Flower Moon, Zone of Interest, and so many other amazing movies that I can't think of right now.
This is in my Top 3 movies of the year… with May December and Anatomy of a Fall. Everyone in this movie is at their best, and Yorgos such a creative director. Glad you watched!
Effortlessly being the key word. For an actor who has been typecast into romcoms and the reductive superhero genres, his more recent work in I Know This Much Is True (playing identical twins) and in Poor Things last year really demonstrate what a deeply talented powerhouse of an actor he is. That face plant that Duncan takes on the landing within Ruffalo's first 15 seconds of screen time is the absolute, sheer commitment of an actor who trusts their director implicitly. What a joy to watch his performance!
Emma Stone and Mark Ruffolo are incredible in this movie. Ruffalo’s character is such a loathsome character. So easy to detest him. And “I must go punch that baby” might be one of the best movie lines ever

If you like this movie, you'll definitely like The Favourite! You'll really start to understand the director's style and choices and Emma Stone is in it again lol and delivers another great performance as well as Rachel Weiss, Olivia Coleman, Nicholas Hault, and Joe Alwyn! But when it comes to Poor Things, this is probably my favorite movie that came out this year! This movie was made with passion by all the people involved and it shows. Emma Stone was also a producer in this movie and had a heavy hand in a lot of choices made. I know some people thing this movie is just weird or vulgar, but I think people need to understand that sometimes life is just that: weird and vulgar and maddening and sad and happy and something to experience, just like this movie. This is Bella's experience of life from the mindset of a child who knows nothing of the world, but as a full grown woman, so her journey is gonna be different than that of a newborn baby's. 18:47 that’s actually a really good point that I noticed too, she’s always in the protection of wealth and her privilege. Those around her are taking advantage yes, but she’s also sheltered from the reality of others and the outside world. From being sheltered by God to adventuring with Duncan, she’s with a wealthy men where abuse and mistreatment of Bella happen but not to an extent that she’s in danger. When it comes to being “poor” and Bella becomes a working woman, she has that hidden money from god but after Duncan takes it she’s still forced to do men she doesn’t really want to do. However the movie shows this as her working out methods to make the interactions somewhat interesting to her. Then upon hearing Gods dying, she can up and leave France and head home with ease; as if it’s her choice to leave whenever from that situation. The abusive husband was a threat but then he wasn’t really a challenge for Bella after all, and she presumably collected his belongings from the marriage plus Gods belongings and then her being married to Max. Bella essentially grew into a role of a wealthy white woman that apparently has been showed that the world is cruel but there’s nothing she can do to change it, so just sit back and relax in her own little world.
on the flip side, she took control of the matter when she became a prostitute, she was in control then, no more protection really or richer comforts, she was still being taken advantage of at that point but she was getting hers too. I also think that period where she was a working girl kinda of seperates stages, the first where men are taking advantage of her and the second where she is doing her own thing. and when she starts doing herr own thing and follows her own interests and seperates from duncan, she learns, and because of her mannerisms she didnt follow what the women of the time did where they essentially felt they needed to please men to get by. she had no qualm cutting Duncan and moving on, she told it like it is and expressed herself. I think that leads to the point with the general where she just realizes she is smarter than that guy, like he hands her chloroform, something that doesnt have to be consumed to have effect XD he's just dumb and she knows it.
This movie was so interesting! I think of it as a sort of (more) modern Frankenstein tale. And the cinematography, production design, costume design, makeup, and acting were amazing!
Like Frankenstein it hits some notes of social commentary as well, but I’m afraid it’s visual style for some made people focus on the “wtf am I looking at here?” rather than some of its deeper themes.

The production design is the reflection of the world from Bella's point of view, and it changes as she changes. In the beginning, there are aspects of the house that look strange. The chairs at the table are too big, for example, in the same way that chairs look very big to infants. When Bella returns, inside the house looks normal, an indication that Bella has grown up.
Definitely one of the most creative and craziest movies I watched in the last 5 years or so. I love it so much! A stunning and definitely a deserved Oscar Win for Emma Stone for this role.

In my opinion, you did a phenomenal analysis of Bella Baxter's character, her journey through life, and her interactions with men and the other people around her. I saw this movie with my 28 year old daughter (I'm 67 years old) at the Angelika East Village theatre. My daughter was more shocked than I was (not ready for what she saw in the film especially all the sex scenes with Bella). I thought the entire film with its characters and exotic exaggerated over-the-top places was so surrealistically beautiful. Everyone has their own taste in films. I am just so used to seeing a lot of crazy indie films. Therefore, the film did not bother me that much because I went home and saw "Poor Things" three times again on Hulu. A great "ride" of a film, pun intended. ♥

After watching and loving this movie myself, and then seeing some incredibly hateful, misplaced articles pushing for it to be treated as incorrect towards women, people with disabilities, and others, I turned to your reaction for a balanced view. So thank you. Whew. There must be a diagnosis for some people (not you) being so compelled to point fingers, they find fault in all media. And then when they can't, there's always the catch-all of pointing to what's NOT there and claiming 'the filmmakers had a chance to explore XYZ but missed the opportunity.'
Loved this movie. Emma's performance was magnificent. And Mark was fantastic as well, absolutely hilarious. Yorgos is a very creative director, and the technical aspects of the film were all on point as well. From the costumes, cinematography, production design and score as well. Emma was absolutely gorgeous and lovely in this film. Terrific movie.
In a weird way, this is kind of a comfort movie for me. There’s something special and kind of wholesome about watching someone discover life for the first time. It’s almost like all of the ideologies the others pose are just taste tests for Bella, who doesn’t necessarily fit into any of them. Her blissful ignorance can sometimes come off as blunt but how can she be rude if she doesn’t know what manners are?
@@frfras7 the defiance of societal norms, the astounding double standard in sexuality between men and women, and how society punishes women for the very behavior which we reward men. Personal growth and subjugation from the men in her life who were infatuated with her until she developed opinions and wants of her own. People would rather focus on the sex acts than why she was engaging in those acts, and what they meant, and in many cases didn’t mean to her. She was given the opportunity to develop and grow without societal persuasion. Something that both men and women in the real world never have the chance to do.
You hit the nail on the head! It baffles me how many people think that this movie is just another “born sexy yesterday” trope, while it really turns it upside down and mocks it. Poor Things may easily be the best film of this decade!

You should also see the parallels to the Stanley Kubrick style of filmmaking: long zooms, tracking shots, discomforting music choices, contrast between carnal flesh and violence.
I saw this in cinemas with both my parents because my Dad thought it was like a Lady Frankenstein movie and I was seated in between them. I don't think I've stared at the ceiling of a cinema more.
Wife and I saw this in the theater with very little knowledge of the film other than it was hailed as great and it had two of our favorite actors in it: Stone and Dafoe. And man, it wowwed us. There was zero doubt about who would run away with that best actress award.
This is one of those rare movies where everyone brings their A game, even Christopher Abbott who appears at the end just for a few minutes absolutely nails the character. Such a great script and a great director.
Sometimes I find it kind of comical how some people deprive themselves of some bizarre but good cinema experiences simply because they don't know how to interpret the passage of time in a movie. i loved every second of poor things 😆
I'm extremely torn about Poor Things. On the one hand, it does look really good & well directed & acted & all those things, so I absolutely understand that: but on the other, transposing the story & characters from Glasgow to London really leaves a sour taste in my mouth given how much of a love letter to Glasgow (and Scotland as a whole) the book was. Alasdair Gray spent his life promoting & elevating Glasgow as a literary & cultural place deserving of respect & recognition. He was coming from a time & a place where Scottish people were told that if they want to make something of themselves, they had to go to London, viewed then & now as the true metropolitan city of the British Isles. Gray, in his work & his own life, rejected that, & did everything he could to celebrate & support Glasgow & it's people. To effectively undo all of that by transposing the story to London - the very sort of thing he argued against - really rubbed me up the wrong way. It'd be like setting Les Miserables in New York, or Zorro in Madrid: you're just missing so much context in the transposition. Which is not to say adaptations can't change settings (hell, one of my favourite adaptations of Shakespeare, Ran, isn't even in the English language, let alone England) but the Scottishness was central to Gray's work, & I just wish we could've had an adaptation that respected that before we got the big departures.
i feel the exact same way, i almost didnt see the movie on purpose because of this. i found watching it with the context of knowing its roots helped me enjoy the movie more than i would have otherwise. it is genuinely a really really good adaptation despite being taken out of its original setting.

Talking about Favourites, I certainly recommend that you watch "The Favourite", I'm sure that you will enjoy it,, once again, the cast gives top performances and Olivia Colman picked up a shock best actress Oscar (BTW if you haven't seen her acceptance speech, its well worth a watch, indeed her acceptance speeches are always worth watchung), in a similar way to Emma Stone picking up, to many a surprise Oscar.
I knew very little about this movie before watching it but I wish I knew even less about it before watching it because letting it unfold without any knowledge would’ve made it a hair better.
I really enjoyed the movie, the soundtrack was so strange and appropriate to a forming mind. What would happen if adults were never conditioned with shame, but just allowed to be curious. You'd get Bella Baxter.
I had a great time watching this with you. One suggestion for you, I don't know if anyone who reacts to and reviews movies and content has ever done the short series Penny Dreadful. I thoroughly enjoyed that series. A mix of Turn of the century literature, Horror, and discovery. The Acting is impeccable with the cast of Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Harnett, Billie Piper, Patty Lupone, and others. I really think you will enjoy it even if you don't use it for content. Keep up the great work.

@@axr7149I have not. My mom's birthday is the reason we went to the theater to watch this one. There wasn't really anything else out at the time and we saw great reviews, comedy and drama and just went for it since there was nothing else out at the time.
2023 was one of the best years for movies in a long time... Poor Things, Barbie, Oppenheimer, They Cloned Tyrone, Killers of the Flower Moon, Zone of Interest, and so many other amazing movies that I can't think of right now.
This is in my Top 3 movies of the year… with May December and Anatomy of a Fall.
Everyone in this movie is at their best, and Yorgos such a creative director. Glad you watched!

Yeah of the supporting acting nominees this year I thought he had the most impact good or bad. I loved seeing him get into a character again
Effortlessly being the key word. For an actor who has been typecast into romcoms and the reductive superhero genres, his more recent work in I Know This Much Is True (playing identical twins) and in Poor Things last year really demonstrate what a deeply talented powerhouse of an actor he is. That face plant that Duncan takes on the landing within Ruffalo's first 15 seconds of screen time is the absolute, sheer commitment of an actor who trusts their director implicitly. What a joy to watch his performance!
Emma Stone and Mark Ruffolo are incredible in this movie. Ruffalo’s character is such a loathsome character. So easy to detest him. And “I must go punch that baby” might be one of the best movie lines ever
Poor Things was ruined by Ruffalo's TERRIBLE English accent. It's as bad as Dick Van Dyke's accent in the original Mary Poppins.

I recently just saw the film and I have to say that it is one of the most interesting and unique experiences I have had watching a film in a long time. Highly recommended film.
If you like this movie, you'll definitely like The Favourite! You'll really start to understand the director's style and choices and Emma Stone is in it again lol and delivers another great performance as well as Rachel Weiss, Olivia Coleman, Nicholas Hault, and Joe Alwyn! But when it comes to Poor Things, this is probably my favorite movie that came out this year! This movie was made with passion by all the people involved and it shows. Emma Stone was also a producer in this movie and had a heavy hand in a lot of choices made. I know some people thing this movie is just weird or vulgar, but I think people need to understand that sometimes life is just that: weird and vulgar and maddening and sad and happy and something to experience, just like this movie. This is Bella's experience of life from the mindset of a child who knows nothing of the world, but as a full grown woman, so her journey is gonna be different than that of a newborn baby's. That scene where Bella finally comes back home and sees Godwin again is a masterclass of acting from two extraordinary performers. I love every second of this movie.

18:47 that’s actually a really good point that I noticed too, she’s always in the protection of wealth and her privilege. Those around her are taking advantage yes, but she’s also sheltered from the reality of others and the outside world. From being sheltered by God to adventuring with Duncan, she’s with a wealthy men where abuse and mistreatment of Bella happen but not to an extent that she’s in danger.
When it comes to being “poor” and Bella becomes a working woman, she has that hidden money from god but after Duncan takes it she’s still forced to do men she doesn’t really want to do. However the movie shows this as her working out methods to make the interactions somewhat interesting to her. Then upon hearing Gods dying, she can up and leave France and head home with ease; as if it’s her choice to leave whenever from that situation.
The abusive husband was a threat but then he wasn’t really a challenge for Bella after all, and she presumably collected his belongings from the marriage plus Gods belongings and then her being married to Max. Bella essentially grew into a role of a wealthy white woman that apparently has been showed that the world is cruel but there’s nothing she can do to change it, so just sit back and relax in her own little world.
on the flip side, she took control of the matter when she became a prostitute, she was in control then, no more protection really or richer comforts, she was still being taken advantage of at that point but she was getting hers too.
I also think that period where she was a working girl kinda of seperates stages, the first where men are taking advantage of her and the second where she is doing her own thing. and when she starts doing herr own thing and follows her own interests and seperates from duncan, she learns, and because of her mannerisms she didnt follow what the women of the time did where they essentially felt they needed to please men to get by. she had no qualm cutting Duncan and moving on, she told it like it is and expressed herself. I think that leads to the point with the general where she just realizes she is smarter than that guy, like he hands her chloroform, something that doesnt have to be consumed to have effect XD he's just dumb and she knows it.

This movie was so interesting! I think of it as a sort of (more) modern Frankenstein tale. And the cinematography, production design, costume design, makeup, and acting were amazing!
Like Frankenstein it hits some notes of social commentary as well, but I’m afraid it’s visual style for some made people focus on the “wtf am I looking at here?” rather than some of its deeper themes.

The production design is the reflection of the world from Bella's point of view, and it changes as she changes. In the beginning, there are aspects of the house that look strange. The chairs at the table are too big, for example, in the same way that chairs look very big to infants. When Bella returns, inside the house looks normal, an indication that Bella has grown up.
Definitely one of the most creative and craziest movies I watched in the last 5 years or so. I love it so much! A stunning and definitely a deserved Oscar Win for Emma Stone for this role.

Liked the way you put it. Her evolution throughout the film was incredibly well paced and acted. Visually stunning. The entire direction of this film was crisped. But give my guy Mark Ruffalo an Oscar! Underrated actor.

In my opinion, you did a phenomenal analysis of Bella Baxter's character, her journey through life, and her interactions with men and the other people around her. I saw this movie with my 28 year old daughter (I'm 67 years old) at the Angelika East Village theatre. My daughter was more shocked than I was (not ready for what she saw in the film especially all the sex scenes with Bella). I thought the entire film with its characters and exotic exaggerated over-the-top places was so surrealistically beautiful. Everyone has their own taste in films. I am just so used to seeing a lot of crazy indie films. Therefore, the film did not bother me that much because I went home and saw "Poor Things" three times again on Hulu. A great "ride" of a film, pun intended. ♥

After watching and loving this movie myself, and then seeing some incredibly hateful, misplaced articles pushing for it to be treated as incorrect towards women, people with disabilities, and others, I turned to your reaction for a balanced view. So thank you. Whew. There must be a diagnosis for some people (not you) being so compelled to point fingers, they find fault in all media. And then when they can't, there's always the catch-all of pointing to what's NOT there and claiming 'the filmmakers had a chance to explore XYZ but missed the opportunity.'

Loved this movie. Emma's performance was magnificent. And Mark was fantastic as well, absolutely hilarious. Yorgos is a very creative director, and the technical aspects of the film were all on point as well. From the costumes, cinematography, production design and score as well. Emma was absolutely gorgeous and lovely in this film. Terrific movie.
In a weird way, this is kind of a comfort movie for me. There’s something special and kind of wholesome about watching someone discover life for the first time. It’s almost like all of the ideologies the others pose are just taste tests for Bella, who doesn’t necessarily fit into any of them. Her blissful ignorance can sometimes come off as blunt but how can she be rude if she doesn’t know what manners are?
The amount of people that did not truly grasp the message of this film, and chose to go straight to being offended missed out on such a good creation
@@frfras7 the defiance of societal norms, the astounding double standard in sexuality between men and women, and how society punishes women for the very behavior which we reward men. Personal growth and subjugation from the men in her life who were infatuated with her until she developed opinions and wants of her own. People would rather focus on the sex acts than why she was engaging in those acts, and what they meant, and in many cases didn’t mean to her. She was given the opportunity to develop and grow without societal persuasion. Something that both men and women in the real world never have the chance to do.
You hit the nail on the head! It baffles me how many people think that this movie is just another “born sexy yesterday” trope, while it really turns it upside down and mocks it. Poor Things may easily be the best film of this decade!

I saw this in cinemas with both my parents because my Dad thought it was like a Lady Frankenstein movie and I was seated in between them. I don't think I've stared at the ceiling of a cinema more.
After all these years, someone finally made Rochelle, Rochelle into an actual movie.

Wife and I saw this in the theater with very little knowledge of the film other than it was hailed as great and it had two of our favorite actors in it: Stone and Dafoe. And man, it wowwed us. There was zero doubt about who would run away with that best actress award.
This is one of those rare movies where everyone brings their A game, even Christopher Abbott who appears at the end just for a few minutes absolutely nails the character. Such a great script and a great director.
Sometimes I find it kind of comical how some people deprive themselves of some bizarre but good cinema experiences simply because they don't know how to interpret the passage of time in a movie. i loved every second of poor things 😆
The sets and costumes in this movie are amazing. Can you imagine being told that you are both your baby and your mother?
I'm extremely torn about Poor Things. On the one hand, it does look really good & well directed & acted & all those things, so I absolutely understand that: but on the other, transposing the story & characters from Glasgow to London really leaves a sour taste in my mouth given how much of a love letter to Glasgow (and Scotland as a whole) the book was. Alasdair Gray spent his life promoting & elevating Glasgow as a literary & cultural place deserving of respect & recognition. He was coming from a time & a place where Scottish people were told that if they want to make something of themselves, they had to go to London, viewed then & now as the true metropolitan city of the British Isles. Gray, in his work & his own life, rejected that, & did everything he could to celebrate & support Glasgow & it's people.
To effectively undo all of that by transposing the story to London - the very sort of thing he argued against - really rubbed me up the wrong way. It'd be like setting Les Miserables in New York, or Zorro in Madrid: you're just missing so much context in the transposition.
Which is not to say adaptations can't change settings (hell, one of my favourite adaptations of Shakespeare, Ran, isn't even in the English language, let alone England) but the Scottishness was central to Gray's work, & I just wish we could've had an adaptation that respected that before we got the big departures.
can we just comprehend that the film isn't a copy of the book, is this so hard to accept it?
i feel the exact same way, i almost didnt see the movie on purpose because of this. i found watching it with the context of knowing its roots helped me enjoy the movie more than i would have otherwise. it is genuinely a really really good adaptation despite being taken out of its original setting.

Emma's performance was absolutely brilliant, and she fully deserved her Oscar. The rest of the cast were great as well. I was so pleased that the film did so well at the BAFTAs and Oscars. I'm very happy that my two favourite films of year performed so well at the BAFTAs and Oscars.
Talking about Favourites, I certainly recommend that you watch "The Favourite", I'm sure that you will enjoy it,, once again, the cast gives top performances and Olivia Colman picked up a shock best actress Oscar (BTW if you haven't seen her acceptance speech, its well worth a watch, indeed her acceptance speeches are always worth watchung), in a similar way to Emma Stone picking up, to many a surprise Oscar.
I knew very little about this movie before watching it but I wish I knew even less about it before watching it because letting it unfold without any knowledge would’ve made it a hair better.

I had a great time watching this with you. One suggestion for you, I don't know if anyone who reacts to and reviews movies and content has ever done the short series Penny Dreadful. I thoroughly enjoyed that series. A mix of Turn of the century literature, Horror, and discovery. The Acting is impeccable with the cast of Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Harnett, Billie Piper, Patty Lupone, and others. I really think you will enjoy it even if you don't use it for content. Keep up the great work.

Another great movie from last year is The Holdovers, which just won at least one Oscar. I haven’t seen many reactions to it.

Perhaps for October you could watch Frankenhooker. A far lower budget but rather comedicly similar in a very loose way.i loved this movie. Some interesting philosophical grist to chew on and visually stunning.
