The scene where Hoss is out riding with his son and he stops and says, "can you hear that?" and I thought oh, now comes the comments about the camp, but all he says is, "that's a heron" and I thought what?!? That's all they could hear. Hedwig knows about the lipstick because she wipes the top layer off on her hand before she applies it to her lips. I think the ending is him gagging. I don't see him vomit. He's choking. It represents his hanging. Then he goes down the stairs into darkness, which is him going to hell.

Good observation. I was thinking maybe that too

I found the lipstick scene very affecting and interesting. First she sniffs it, tests the shade in her hand, applies it then wipes it off. My thinking is that red lipstick on an Uber Hausfrau wouldn't be appropriate to her.

I think the retching is meant to signify his inner turmoil around the gassing of so many Jews and my take was that somewhere in his psyche what he was undertaking was actually having an affect on him maybe he was unwell as he did go to the drs . Did this film generate any empathy for Hoss ? Interesting .

I also think him descending into the darkness was to signify not so much hell but the hell ish events of what actually took place under his watch .

I found it interesting how you hear the vicious dogs in the background but the family dog ignores their barks. Also the marital infidelity between both Rudolf and his wife. Their issues deeper than the other side of the wall. His vomiting at the end was him being filled with filth and then the cut to present day workers cleaning “filth”/ dirt. I also noticed how at the nazi “convention/ meeting, he seemed to be a misfit. The other officers mentioned how they hoped he wouldn’t kill everyone and at least leave some workers. Lots of hidden elements in this film. Great film.

love these details - yes i think i talked about the vomit as a sort of primal overwhelming revulsion that his body couldnt help but betray to himself - very important film x

I really want to see this.
But I’m not sure, I would be able to cope, emotionally.
My Nan and most of her Friends were in a Concentration Camp.
    😢💔
They are all no longer with us, but the Stories I heard as a Child and as a Teenager, will always stay with me. 🤬💔
But thank you Mark for this Review. 😘

I noticed the child crying constantly. The dog seems to be anxious the entire movie. Maybe both felt the awfulness of what was going on right outside the home. Disturbing movie. I haven't stopped thinking about this movie for 3 straight days now. I shared it with my dad and now he feels the exact same way.

Hi Mark, don’t know about you but I feel that I am living in a repeat history era that occurred literally 100 years ago. The rise of right wing politics, rhetoric and the move towards authoritarianism. The discussion about WW3 and conscription. The conflict in Gaza/Israel specifically resonates with me. I find it quite scary and chilling. Really keen to watch this film, thank you🙏🏾

You conviently ignore the rise in left wing antisemitism. If you care about antisemtism, you call it out regardless of the source. And why invoke the Israel-Hamas war? I hope you arent drawing a parallel between the German Nazis and Israel. The ICJ didnt demand a ceasefire which it would have if it thought Israel was guilty of genocide.

Sandra is wonderful, I also really liked Birth it was stunning , JG such a great film maker , interesting when RH talked about the bleeding of the lillies and wanted the SS to stop picking the flowers 🌹🌹it was a code for something else im sure .., remember also that for genocides to take place de humanisation has to take place , the humans were described as Pieces as they were in Son of Saul
It would then be easy to have no feeling about the "" pieces " as no humanity is attached , so easy to dispose of .

Wow just watched this film and there is no way the wife didn’t know what was happening. Would have needed to be deaf blind and no smell. I think her mother realised though and that’s why she fled in the night

Thank you for this wonderfully detailed and insightful analysis of a movie that looks to be difficult but compelling viewing. It saddens me that those who need this movie’s message the most will either not see it or not receive it and reawaken their humanity.
