I think it's very important to very your fruits and vegetables so that you get the right nutrition. I loved that you bought the strawberries! If someone was on a really tight budget the strawberries would make them feel like they had something special! The meals looked very good
I love your mashed potato balls recipe! I receive lots of instant mashed potatoes and canned meat (beef, pork, chicken, tuna and salmon) in my food pantry hauls. I would substitute one of those canned meat/fish items for the ground turkey, season appropriately from my pantry, and wrap the mashed potatoes around that and then fry them. Thank you for a brilliant idea!
I love these kind of videos. You're so creative. I probably would have had to splurge on an onion for me. 😆 Thanks for helping everyone stretch their dollars.
@@rhoadestraveled I'm with Mary Jo- cilantro tastes like soap to me. 😞 It's genetic, I'm told... I wish I could like it. Cilantro is said to have health benefits.
A few videos ago, I left a comment about pantry items, and I can tell you have really taken that feedback to heart. I think it makes your challenge videos richer by pushing your creativity. In this video, the pantry items were pretty basic, like vegetable oil, shortening, salt pepper, a sprinkling each of sugar and garlic powder, a squirt of ketchup. More if you happen to have it, like some more spices, soy sauce and vanilla extract, but a person could absolutely make these dishes with just the bare basics. I also think it's good that you don't always get, for example, bananas. I love bananas, and they are one of the most affordable fresh fruits, but I have a sister who is allergic to them, and I'll bet some others are, too. It's good being able to offer options.
I loved that you did not have onions or peppers in this as I am allergic and cannot eat them. Instead of the cilantro I would have used frozen spinach or frozen green peas for 70cents at walMart. I loved the fact you used strawberries instead of bananas. Rice cereal or rice pudding is delicious. I would have chopped them up finer and covered in sugar to make a sauce of it and add to the cereal. Would have made it much more flavorful. Something you can use sometime is about 3 packages of crush ramen noodles with a can of chicken or tuna and a can of peas or mixed vegetables which is only 58 cents a can at Walmart. You can also make a soup with ramen noodles and a small can of chicken with mixed vegetables and seasoning packets from the ramen. If you have enough money add a 70 cent can of chopped mushrooms to it to fill up more. Thst would easily make a casserole and a pot of soup to last 7 days
I was kind of thinking the same thing. I would’ve use green peas or broccoli florettes. You can get a bag of either one for about a $1 at Walmart. I think it really was amazing at how very little she purchased and she was able to make so many meals out of it all. She did a really great job at that!
Thank You for the ideas. I would have only gotten one bag of rice. And I would have gotten a can of pineapple for my fruit. That would have freed up over $2. Then I could get a few more ingredients to expand the budget beyond rice. Love the turkey mixture. Reminds me of the restricted diet for medical treatments.
I learned about those potato balls many years ago. Mix mashed potatoes (no milk added) with flour. Cook ground beef and fill and fry as you did. My Puerto Rican mother-in-law called them rellenos. Very delicious.
We seldom eat beef and never eat pork. We eat fruits and vegetables in season. Carrots, cabbage, and potatoes are cheap in winter. A little chicken, eggs, ground turkey, tuna, or parmesan cheese are good proteins. We eat lots of beans, rice, pasta, and lentils. Tina,Al's wife
Wow the ground turkey was a great price! Awesome finds! I love seeing budget recipes outside of just oatmeal and beans+rice because I get bummed eating the same thing over and over for months on end
I just bought a 5 lb pack of chicken thighs for $5. I plan to use them this week in a couple different meals: grilled chicken for Sunday dinner, chicken cacciatore with a pantry can of sauce, and maybe a sheet pan dinner. Also bought a few baking potatoes and some frozen veggies. I know that’s just dinners but it comes in under $10. Just have to keep an eye open for deals/sales. Your videos are awesome and so creative.

I like how your ideas can easily be transferred over to other food stuffs. We’re not a ground poultry eaters, but we did stock up on ground beef at $2.99 a pound, so I would use ground beef. We got 150 good bananas for $9.99 so we’ll be eating oatmeal and bananas for quite a while.

I’m glad to watch your cheap meals videos. While I have been enjoying the extra money on my food stamps card from the covid pandemic support, I’ve heard thru the grapevine that extra money will shortly be disappearing, so I’ll be going back to roughly $40 a month. While I have picked up a lot of pantry staples, like beans, rice, and various pastas, I know I’ll have to tighten my belt up again.

The strawberries and cream hot cereal, she could've added a little of the dried potato flakes to the cream and water as a thickening agent before adding the rice. Less soupy
Wow the deep fried mashed potato ball looked absolutely delicious! And strawberries and cream- yum! Thanks for the great ideas! It helps me feel like there are so many ways to make lower cost food and really stretch that dollar. Thanks!
Very creative . Those mashed potato balls looked delicious fried. It reminded me of something we make mostly fir special occasions called arancini, which is the same concept but rice instead of mashed potatoes and a bit of marinara sauce and peas in the meat mixture. So I probably would have done that with the turkey. I probably would have made tacos with the other half or meatballs.
I would have to sub out the cilantro, or coriander as we call it here in Australia. I’d probably sub it for basil, parsley or spring onion. I don’t know if I could eat the breakfast. That’s where I fall down on these challenges as I hate cooked cereals. It’s a texture thing. Typically, the cheapest breakfast I make is toast and vegemite. Now that’s an acquired taste lol 😆 Great video as always 👏🏻
Kroger sells quart size and pint size bottles of milk. I buy the quart size all the time for my dad because they are also shelf stable.....even being sold in the refrigerator section they are shelf stable. You know because the date will be really far out and it will say on the bottle to refrigerate after opening. I have kept a bottle sitting on a shelf for a month and then opened it and yup perfectly fine. My dad being older doesn't always drink milk so the quart size is perfect plus it isn't too heavy for him to lift.

I wouldn’t buy the meat, eggs, dairy, or the cilantro and I don’t eat fried food so I’d literally have to change the entire menu lol but I will always be amazed at how you can create a meal out of anything.

I am amazed at how creative you are! Love that you are always trying something different. Really helps me think outside the box. I kept thinking you might just eat a few strawberries a day. Love them on the rice cereal. Thank you.
Fried rice, the perfect frugal delish money saving meal. We eat it once a week it seems.....gets rid of that one bendable carrot, that 1/4 cup leftover peas or corn.....and we have hens so a ton of eggs..... I started making this when I literally had to rely on the free packets of soy sauce and other condiments I could gather at really where ever I COULD. It is still a hard habit to break. Mayo, jelly, salad dressing, ranch cup..... I use them now for school lunches or work lunches. Thanks for posting you are always so creative 😁 p.s.......we are a white rice family, I just can't eat the brown rice, but it is much better for you!!

parsley instead of cilantro, pinto beans + rice instead of two bags rice; i love rice pudding but never thought to add any other fruit than mango; the meat & mash balls look like something worth trying outside of a food challenge
I'm thinking instead of frying or baking the potato dumplings, you could also boil them in water, broth, or boullion, maybe even herbal tea for different flavor. That could be a good way to add some variety over the course of the week.
@@TheQuaintHousewife I want so badly to like cilantro because it's in so many things that look good but 🤢 I can only handle a tiny sprinkle of it in salsa or pico de gallo.
You always do a good job. As a working mother, could you maybe do a challenge for working moms of little ones? I am past that stage myself, but have a couple friends,as well as our daughter, who could use cost saving, healthy meal ideas. Thank you so much!
You always have such amazing recipes! I keep saying but I sure wish these channels were available when I was going to college full time and working a minimum wage full time job. I didnt qualify for any assistance as I was single with no children. The only thing that saved me during those days was I was working as a cook at a nursing home, we were allowed to eat meals there while on duty. I hate to admit however I did break the rules and take some of the food that should have been trhrown away, especially for those rare weekends I was not working and had no food at my apartment. Bless you for what you do. You are touching alot of lives!!🙂😇
I thought you did great with this challenge. I appreciate the outside the box thinking. I was going to say, for people that deal with texture issues, like the cooked brown rice, that you can take it and put it in the blender before you cook it. Then you create like a cream of rice cereal. Thanks again for getting us to realize that even when things get expensive we can still eat well.
I really enjoy and appreciate your videos, thank you so much! A sa single person, I use dry powdered milk, that way I only make enough for what I need in a meal, or for cereal or a protein shake- this is my #1 way to keep milk on hand and waste zero of it, ever. I'm also big into cabbage and lentils, these are super cheap and can turn into anything from salads to side dishes to soups!
I think its very realistic to get different stuff every time you do these challenges. Of course if you can fit it into the budget, you're gonna try to not eat oatmeal and bananas every single day. I like seeing what you can do with 10$ especially in these times. I love your mashed potato ball idea!
Love Cilantro great taste, What about... a bag of lentils that makes a whole pot you can eat all week. Or mash and put in tortilla. Also, bread, cereal, onions, carrots, red peppers, garlic? *Granulated sugar was not part of your grocery purchase?

Yayyyyy you’ve done it again!!! Impressive
The rice cereal looks delicious!
I'm thinking instead of frying or baking the potato dumplings, you could also boil them in water, broth, or boullion, maybe even herbal tea for different flavor. That could be a good way to add some variety over the course of the week.
Wow. ! Fantastic job ! That’s incredible all for 10 dollars…….
Once again, complete creative BRILLANCE !!! 🎉
QH, how do you get fresh strawberries to last one WEEK?
Thank you! I just buy the freshest looking ones and keep them in the crisper.
Store in a qt jar
whatever you do, don't wash them unless you're going to cut them up and store them in an airtight container.
I'd have to change out the cilantro for green onions. I have that cilantro tastes like soap thing going for me.
You are the second person that mentioned cilantro and soap. I had never heard of that before. Interesting.
@@TheQuaintHousewife I want so badly to like cilantro because it's in so many things that look good but 🤢 I can only handle a tiny sprinkle of it in salsa or pico de gallo.
I feel like those mashed potato balls would be really good stuffed with cheese, I may try to make some.
Yes, they would be. And you don't have to worry about a safe food temperature when not using meat. You could deep fry them in less time!
You are amazing!!! Such an inspiration!
You always do a good job. As a working mother, could you maybe do a challenge for working moms of little ones? I am past that stage myself, but have a couple friends,as well as our daughter, who could use cost saving, healthy meal ideas. Thank you so much!
Whaaaatt! Another great video! Wonderful recipe ideas. Thanks so much. Blessings 😍🤗
Thanks Darnell! And you sound very resourceful!
Oh man… those potato balls look SO good!
Please do these $20.00 for two or 40 for four.
It’s funny, I can’t stand the texture of white rice, but love brown rice (that isn’t over cooked).
I usually land on cabbage or carrots for bulk veg, never would have thought to turn to an herb!
Cabbage is an unsung hero for budget veggies. It's such a versatile green.
Great! In Puerto Rico we call it “rellenos”. ☺️❤️
Love this video!!!! Very creative! Maybe if someone doesn't like Cilantro they could substitute fresh parsley. Great job!!!
Sometimes using sale fruit is a good break from bananas which I get tired of eating often.
Your Wal-Mart has a lot more chicken than mine.Good advice.
I thought it was a lot of chicken myself 😮
This is one of your best low cost and healthy ideas. Not to mention tasty:)
Thanks DLN!
Good job once again..i might try that breakfast!!!
Great food options for the challenge. Sugar is a home pantry ingredient.
wonderful video, you are so creative!
All looked good. Except I don't think I would like cereal. Our eggs went up too. But awesome job. Thanks.
Also enjoyed the brown rice hot cereal idea
