Sam Harris on consciousness, AI and why 'cancel culture' is real | The Book Club

- Опубліковано 17 сер 2020
- In this week's Book Club podcast, philosopher, scientist and broadcaster Sam Harris joins the Spectator's literary editor Sam Leith. He explains why 'cancel culture' is real and J.K. Rowling's trans-rights-activist opponents are 'insane', how 'bad philosophy' has ruined the social sciences, the circumstances under which totalitarianism might be okay - and why, as a liberal, he thinks the left is in danger of destroying America.

Sam Harris is simply amazing. He is such a good orator and covers almost every angle of an idea/argument.
He also remains so calm. And he has a smart underrated sense of humor
Star Field Agreed.
He's a trust fund baby who wants a version of "free speech" where he says controversial things and then nobody criticizes him harshly. Fuck that noise. What a crybaby.
@@alwayswatching4351 Not true. He wants criticism that stands on two legs with merit.
At no point does he let his emotions overpower any conversation, he is not a Piers Morgan figure trying to talk louder than his opponent when ever criticism is levelled against him. So no, he is not a cry baby.
You appear to be one, however.
Give me one criticism against one of his arguments to which you think a rebuttal against you is actually a cry against you.
When it is a long podcast it really helps to link sections/topics in the description. Thank you!
Sam doesn’t need evidence , he’s above that :) haven’t you figured out he loves cheese pizza?

I liked the questions very much. Excellent interviewer.
From the 1990 to 2008, I worked in the Editorial department of a medium-sized, very conservative city's daily newspaper. Every letter we received that called for the discontinuation of a disliked column came from a right-wing writer. Literally every single one. We received plenty of critical letters from lefties, but none of them suggested pulling someone's column because they disagreed with his or her views.
The world has gone ass backwards, upside down and inside out. It's beginning to look like there's no place for me in it.
There's virtually no political movement these days that hasn't been tainted by some degree of identity politics and non theistic religiosity. Wokeness, Trumpism, both are two separate hells that are brainwashing vast numbers of people in today's society, and it's among one of the worst things to bestow modern times. It makes genuine progress impossible because both cults are constantly competing as to which one can be the most irrational.
Will there be an audiobook? That’d be pretty meta!
I know he never would, but I dream of the day when Sam would run for public office.
Agree he never would. But as much as I like Sam and agree with him on many topics, I'm not so sure he would be a great leader. When leading in politics you sometimes have to act very decisive, like in a pandemic. And Sam tends to overthink in many cases
Our systems spit out people who are honest and have a desire for truth. He wouldn't last. That's why he set up his career separate from any institution.
@@koentjuh782 it’s better than AOC come on.
Huge fan of Sam.

What did Hitchens do to you?
Do write.
It gives.
Are you fine with what was said.
I think deep fakes might be the black ball Bostrum was imagining
Deep fakes are not new technology. They are an application of existing AI tech.
Sam loves pizza
People who've heard this, has Sam taken the pills for his chronic TDS? I want to know if he's listenable to yet.
Dude, I feel the same way. Sam Harris has quite literally been unlistenable to due to his massive TDS. It's a shame someone as smart as he is gets so bogged down in that kind of blind, venomous bias.
If your IQ is significantly below average, any rational and informed comment on Trump appears to be TDS.
If it appears chronic TDS, its chronically low IQ
If it is seen as massive TDS, its massively low IQ.
Sadly there is no cure for you.
Good luck
@@f-xdemers2825 I would contend if it were a Liberal/Progressive President achieving EXACTLY the same record, Harris would be lauding it. Therefore his reaction to the Trump Presidency is irrational and personal, a derangement.
@@simonking2869 Hypothesis are not facts, the reality of the matter is that Trump s record was appalling and promised worse if re-elected and that no progressive president in the history of the US has come close to this in dividing the country among other injuries to our democracy.. Idle speculation on your part is no basis for rational analysis, Stay real and you may see the light.
@@f-xdemers2825 Simon King made assertions about Trumps policy record, which so happens to be the complete opposite of speculation, yet you make personal attacks (IQ) and can't even follow his argument for WHY he considers Sam having TDS. You're a great representation of the disconnect in this country, namely, that liberals cannot recognize the way that Trump still is 'winning' because liberals have moved to becoming the Nazi/Fascist/Arrogant pricks themselves in opposition to Trump. That's exactly what TDS is a representation of, where you fail to see the humanity or valid considerations of a person's viewpoint because you've allowed yourself to be so prejudiced against the person...kinda-sorta like what racism IS.
The fact that you level charges of low IQ against people you can't functionally argue with is quite ironic.
Trust fund sam harris, once again, crying about people not sharing his particular world view.
He is not crying in any way. Just calmly and articulately describing his thoughts on many matters. I happen to agree with him completely, on virtually everything bar Trump.
Oh you're wrong. He is a crybaby. He wants to put his ideas out there then cries foul like a punk whenever anyone levels criticism he doesn't like. Dude is kinda pathetic, and so are you if you defend his weird trust fund ass.
AlwaysWatching He does not cry 😂 Are you one of these children that believe any counter-argument to an argument made is a cry?
Am I crying right now over your comment, in your eyes? Because I really am not.
It’s simply the case that good points will be made against arguments if the point has merit. This is all Sam is doing.
The only pathetic person here is you by giving people like myself ultimatums on your assessment of me, by declaring if I am not against X then I am now also X. It’s a fallacy and baby-ish one at that.
Please calmly, if you can, state what you have a problem with in his arguments?
@@charliewalker9443 Hi Charlie, Genuinely commendable of you to debate, but there is no reasoning with these people. It doesn't go beyond them insulting people who have the temerity to have differing views.
John Neville I think you are spot on with that assessment John. I both love and hate debating people online, for that very reason.
