Sam Harris is one of the most important voices/thinkers of our time.
Agreed! He has such a depth and breadth of understanding on issues. And not just on a multitude of areas singularly, but he has deeply integrated his thoughts and views across disciplines extracting profound wisdom, which he presents as consistent within itself. Plus he is such an eloquent speaker and shares his wisdom with us! He also applies his well thought out ethics to himself and lives by his beliefs! Glad to see he is becoming more and more popular.
Fact
@Ruby Badilla if you listened to anything he just said or any of his other lectures... this wouldn't be a question.. Hense nobody's trying to debate it with you.
So you should follow your own spew - slave?-
@Larry Myers and I'm still trying to get it out of my hair, Larry!! you ol' dog you!
Sam literally changed my life. I am forever grateful to him for his lectures against religion and meditation teachings
“You want to get to a position where thoughts are like thieves coming into an empty house”
*
That's disturbing.
I get that, but to rephrase... Recognising the free radical thoughts and eliminating them, replacing them, and through that process, you realise how empty your once busy mind becomes. It's an inward focus on thought patterns and changing them.
@@JusFaith You will never empty your mind and you can't change your thought patterns. Nobody knows what a mind is and nobody has free will.
@@CJ0101 I do it all the time observing your own thoughts, replacing, and changing is like housekeeping for the mind.
I can listen to Sam read the phone book and it’d still be amazing. His clarity is astounding.
Look how happy the host is just to be in Sam's presence. So wholesome.
Sam Harris is really the best at communicating these ideas. I mean I think about the same stuff and I come to similar conclusions but whenever I try to explain it to someone they just have question marks in their eyes.
Exactly my experience. I just can't articulate it the way you can 🙈
Second Sam Harris video I’ve seen you comment on
Yes I agree, I haven't listened to him much but as I listened to this I kept thinking.."yes, thats what I think about all the time". I will listen to more of him!
Coding in Flow !,,
Also, people are entrenched in their own little bubbles. Even the best persuader would have trouble reaching such people. Hell, you might have trouble reaching me depending upon your approach. Dealing with hard-headed people in my family has made me stubborn, too.
Ideally, our differences should begin dispassionate discourse, but if I brought up any of my ideas on social media, I would get "cancelled" by 95% of my "friends" and family.
I've been wondering whether I should just be myself. I don't think I could feel more alone than I already do. On the other hand, I hate conflict. I don't want to have to explain myself to those who never think critically. They barrage you with assertions and it's exhausting to debunk them one after another. I stopped fully being myself when I realized I'd never get through to my "friends" and family.
Sam is one of best orators of our time...his intelligence, choice of words, and delivery are impeccable...I admire his patience and self control, no matter the subject, and especially in his infamous debates...he is brilliant
Sam could be asked the same questions in different interviews thousands of times and STILL find a way to articulate the answer slightly differently. His mind is so vast in that sense.
Sam Harris always makes me think, enlightens me and teaches me something, and i love him for that. Thank you Sam Harris.
More mindfulness is less stickiness... so when you feel bad you get over it, and when you feel happy you dont cling to it... Its about letting life arise as it does and allowing it to change when it changes
Excellent stuff on mindfulness around the 30 min mark "Being indifferent to a good thought or bad thought" = key to happiness = Classic "How much would I pay to get back to today and what I'm stressing about in this day, to not get that call that I had a brain tumour"
'Thoughts should be like thieves entering an empty house' just awesome
Love seeing Sam on meditation and pulling back on the politics a little.
Wow. This guy is BRILLIANT!
Absolutely, and he expresses his brilliance with such cogency.
😏
Sam Harris, a voice of reason and clear thinking.
He’s right there are things worth talking about instead of stubbornly sticking to the same ideas from thousands of years ago, and this is one of those conversations. Thank you!!
Sam is one of my favorite people on world today. Super knowledgeable and integrity
*Mindfulness is something very powerful. The ability of being mindful can truly help you progress in life*
Thank you!
You are very welcome!
Don't think "progress" is the aim
It is itself important progress.
having the experience of unconditional love is key.
His children must be so lucky to have Sam Harris as their dad...
I'm sure he could adopt you if you asked nicely

If I was ever going to have a guru it would be Sam Harris.
everyone has had a guru, which just means teacher, and he has taught us things. As far as indian spiritual gurus, I think Krishnamurti was the only one worth listening to. What he said was not his main focus, which is what any good teacher does, enlighten their student on the teacher's fallibility and imperfection as a human. Too many of these spiritual guru types are filled with ego (see osho, sadhguru, deepak chopra, etc) and expect devotion without question or skepticism. Krishna-ji was different, he was told from childhood he' become a world guru to enlighten the world. But he ended up rejecting this notion, and just became a beautiful amazing public speaker without preaching and constantly checking himself and asking his listeners often even not to listen to what he said. Still, you can learn a lot just from his way of speaking, his manner and demeanor and occasionally some solid lessons on deep exploratory and stream of consciousness ways of thinking and speaking.
wiremessiah Krishnamurti was the “only” one?
@@Dinkys999 He was one of a kind, the only others with his "aura" are some musicians and filmmakers and such. People expect high level guys like this like the did krishna-ji to teach them through words and techniques. But they are artistic in nature, they have something normal people don't, and they can't transfer it to anyone by being a guru because it's uniquely individual. The ones who do try to be gurus are often just technicians and scientists who are not light to themselves, but try to be for others, which doesn't work. What does work is just experiencing the light the great ones are. not enlightenment, just the best kind of entertainment with some little glimpses of bliss.
I have become more of a light to myself over my life, starting when i was alone a lot as a kid. Eventually as i grew up, I realized all I have is inside my head, so I have to make it the best most exciting, stimulating, and happeneing place to be, like I constantly am throwing a party in my head, that is being a light to yourself. And I found that others can sense this light in my presence, even if they can't see it themselves, they see flashes through my eyes and manner and demeanor. And it makes me more attractive, interesting, and admired. One of my biggest influences in this idea came standing in line at subway of all place, and there were these twin babies in a stroller one in front of the other, so they couldn't see each other, but they had the EXACT same look on their face, which I had never seen on an adult much less babies. It was much different from usual baby expressions, which are usually emotional or spaced out. These girls were in complete bliss, and not like laughing or just fed, not smiles, but just this intense look of "I have dominion over the world, this is exactly where I want to be, no one is or has ever been in a better state of existence". I use the singular because they were ignoring each other, but had the exact same look and it was unmistakable how they felt right then.
@@34672rr ironically you are exactly the kind of person Krishnamurti hated lol
Sam Harris Has A Guru In India
His Name Is Poonjaji Maharaj, who was a disciple of Raman Maharishi
Try Him Instead
Woooow..the great icon himself!!! I m so excited 😀
This is the clearest definition of mindfulness and the goal of meditation that I have ever heard. About 60% of the way through the video. Priceless!!!
This was extremely enlightening because my normal ground state is like he felt on MDMA!! I feel like that all the time and when I took mdma it had almost no effect even at higher doses. I have been wondering since I was in first grade why I felt so different and I genuinely thought the whole world was completely insane. It’s been a long road, but I am finally realizing why I have felt like ET my whole life. 😳❤️ It was so bad that I refused to go to school and I have never been understood my whole life period. People try to put me in a box and It’s extremely frustrating. When I was in first grade I had to close my eyes and tried putting my head in my desk because of the spiritual fear and viciousness I felt and heard all around me. It was painful to be around the pain of others and it made me devastatingly lonely because I loved people so much. It’s not all roses to be like this and people would take advantage of me and I would let them because of the pain I saw in them. It’s a staggering nightmare considering that I even felt that way about my parents. I learned to be an actor early on. I am also transgender so it helped with that too. Seriously not fun. I feel like now it’s a blessing because it’s made me stronger and more aware than other people but it’s definitely been a long road with my eyes propped open in pain.
spiralsun1 I understand the journey you must have tread, I’m glad you have more understanding
spiralsun1 That sounds very difficult, but the blessed aspect of this condition is experiencing the love for humanity!
Love these topics Lewis! Lets see some more of meditation, peacefulness, happiness and navigating relationships!!!!! LOVE IT it helps so much! (would love to see TD Jakes, Steve Harvey, and Jen Sincero)
Wow Lewis! I think it's neat that you're having these theology conversations lately. It helps to see the different perspectives for knowing how to come to terms about the topics of God in our lives.
Sam, you’re such a smart fellow. Thanks for existing.
Thank you Sam, apparently I'm having a normal experience. Love your books and your talks.
Wow this is serendipitous! Literally doing a Mind Map Video on "Waking Up" right now..
Stopped for a break and got a notification for this! Thanks for the podcast will watch after I'm finished 🙏🙏🙏
Grateful for you!
I just discovered his app via a music coach, i only new him from the political and religious debates but i've been meditating since 20212 and in a few short days the theory lessons have deepened my understanding of consciousness and already changing my perception and relationship with my own thoughts.
Sam Harris basically just quoted Shantideva's poetry in english towards the end of the video: if sth can be done about a problem, why worry and if nothing can be done, why worry lol. Thanks for this conversation
I picked up his basing on stoicism, Marcus Aurelius and that school....as the baseline for psychological health I think he said. It is very intriguing how stoicism’s rationalism meshes with the completely different paradigm of non dualism, consciousness awakening, enlightenment and all that Rupert Spira and the like talk about. I guess wisdom all arrives at basically the same point, but by different routes. “Don’t worry be happy”....is that song the key to life?
Knowing we're not doing all we can to solve the problem is what causes worry.
This assumes you can always know one way or the other. People worry when it's not clear what can be done about something; not clear if an effort will succeed. And when something can be done but we are not able to do it.
This is awesome. I just went searching if there was any new Sam Harris stuff on UA-cam, good timing on this one.
How the conciousness arise??? This man is my intellectual idol😊😊😊
we are so lucky that sam is alive at a moment when he can be recorded saying all that he does. if he existed before the age of the internet. we would have lost a lot of wisdom. truly greatful for his existence. beautiful human being!

Terrific conversation. Lewis, your respect for Harris and reverence for his thought process was palpable.

*_Love_* this topic!
Sometimes I think Sam Harris is an AI robot sent from the future.
155 year old Ben Stiller to scientists: "Make a robot that looks like me and send it to the past to educate humans."
I stumbled across a very similar method of thinking by chance. If I'm enduring something really painful, or about to do something I don't like I try and break it down into single moments. I ask myself if I can handle another second, and another second after that one is over. The answer is always yes and the awful time always ends eventually. This helped my overcome my fear of needles.
I used to get anxious days in advance before a needle, but then I realized in this very moment I feel fine, all the way up until the actual injection into the skin. And even during that brief moment I asked myself (don't look or visualize what's happening, strictly in terms of how it feels, is this bearable ?) and again the answer was always yes. We experience way more painful things than needles regularly, but the idea of the needle is the biggest enemy.
Ohhhh, looking forward to watching this conversation. Great choice of guest. Thank you x
You are welcome!
Need Part 2 ASAP!
Love Sam....keeps me sane...thanks Lewis....
Wide ranging, and, simply... brilliant.
This has got to be one of the best talks by Mr Harris so far. Thank you, Mr Lewis for making this happen. I have nothing but respect for both of you!
Loved it. When are you going to upload the 2nd part though?
Great interview! Thanks,! Lewis
Thank you for the short video.
Of course, I agree with all that's being said here and appreciate the sharing. The one thing to point out is that the description of the word "happiness" is very confusing in modern language. It's not a good or a bad word, it's just misunderstood. Happiness to me is not an excitement, euphoria or a state where you reach your goals. It's simple the calm place where you can observe the present moment without judging it. And yes, we are all trying to be happy and we want life full of happiness but understanding what happiness is is a key. The word mindfulness is also confusing because it points to a mind and it's fullness. In reality, there is no mind and there is no fullness so trying to be mindful is not possible. Mind is a concept and fullness is a concept that can not be found nor experienced. Only the present moment can be experienced and if this presents is observed without believes of any concept, we only find stillness. This is what I call happiness and wanting to experience it is our true nature. So, be happy, but understand what it means. Again, great content and thanks for putting this together. May the force be with us all :)
After his lifetime sam will definitely be thought of as one of the great western philosophers
I already think of him that way. Haha
Christ that's the saddest thing l've heard all day, he's good and has a reasonable grasp on reality but he isn't a Socrates!!!
IndigoBlue why not? He’s combining ancient Eastern philosophy, ancient Western (Greek) philosophy and modern philosophy and some futurism and science for a pretty solid argument on a lot of life’s grand topics.
This was refreshing to hear..
A truly remarkable man. Thank you
I "felt" true unconditional love at the time i had my second psychosis (Christmas time 2019). Ofcourse, there were many after-thoughts which were nonsense... for example i would be another Jesus figure, so i had to choose 12 people who would follow me etc.. also i REALLY thought i would die and be resurrected after 3 days and nonsense like that. I struggled a few hours but finally surrendered...., i trusted in "God" and whatever he wanted me to do (except hurting anyone) i'd do it. If it ment to suffer and die.. i would do it without any doubt. I had tears of joy running down my face feeling loved, right after that mixed with tears of suffering cauze i didnt knew what i had been missing my whole life....
I didnt take any Medication or "Drugs" then nor now, i do meditate tho..
I can not tell you what to do with this little story of mine, i just wanted to share it.
I am greatfull for beeing able to listen to you guys.
Lewis, Sam, you 2 make the world better =)
i've been using Headspace for almost a year .. if i had known about Sam's APP today I would have probably been already enlightened : )) what I learned with Andy in a year here I was taught the same and 100 times more in 5 or max in 10 lessons ..it's amazing he's the brilliant teacher besides all his brilliant mind ..gotta thank Headspace too though, but Sam is just on a whole another level
Agree 100%! Waking Up has seriously changed my meditation game, too. Specifically, I don't think I ever connected with what the Buddhists would call "anatta" until Sam's "pointing out" instructions.
Adam Stewart yea man .. words are never enough to describe that good feeling of meditation session ))
@AllSeeingEye ofGod I appreciate the idea your sharing here, but to be fair Sam is not a Buddhist, nor does he try to convert people to buddhism. He's concerned with experiences that are central to all religions, the parts which we can all experience that aren't inherently religious and which experience offer particular insight into our lives and the nature of consciousness which can be very invaluable to society. It's best to in my opinion to take what is useful and discard the rest.
Thanks for this podcast.
Extremely awesome ! Really . Brilliant !
You can tell that Sam has worn a cap or something. It’s funny now I try to imagine him walking around with a cap in LA, I’m not used to seeing him like that haha
Don't think a cap sits that high. Looks more like someone in the hair salon did a hatchet job.
@@ferrytioman When you have a large head, it has to sit high, believe me.

42:13 How do you know if by trying solve a problem, you're not actually creating one - especially if there wasn't actually a problem to begin with? I'd imagine that people with social anxiety face this predicament everyday. Not quite as straight forward as "either there is a problem or there isn't"

Sam Harris got some underated biceps
Lewis, as a Christian I struggle with the organizational part of it and attending church. I am very strong in my faith but do not feel like going to church enhances my relationship with Christ. I would love to hear your views on attending church and how you feel about organized religion. Also how you are able to respect the views of other people that differ from your beliefs.

Man, some really good bits here. Like looking at your physiological reaction and taking it out of its context (feeling anxiety before a date). Or realizing how much you would pay to be back in your current state if you had things much, much worse. Sam explains these ideas in a way that makes me realize they are completely achievable approaches to reasoning about our situation.
Lewis Howe’s shows that you can he physically and mentally , spiritually attractive
Lewis, check out Gyozo Margoczi. His book,
FEELINGS: The need for a new science, goes into the distinction between feelings which are kind of an animal-like reactions to situations and emotions which are the thought-forms that we overlay on top of them. It’s a dense book, not easy to get through but it’s worth looking into. and no one has had him as a guest😉.
I needed this today. Thank you
I realized that theres no such thing as fear of death since we have no understanding about what death is (how can you fear what you dont know)... however what we are is adicted to living... by noticing this "addiction" while practicing we can free ourselves from it
Torstein O I believe ~God~ is the configuration of the whole! And the Ego is the experience of the individual! Even though as the whole it’s a blissful state of being--we enjoy the adventure of separation and regardless of the suffering life can deliver, being human is glorious! I suppose that could be defined as an addiction to living or a fear of dying! I don’t know--a thought provoking notion!
