    For folks who drive mostly intrastate at 26,001+ GCVWR, there's another option, which is to buy trip permits that cover GVW registration and fuel taxes each time one crosses state lines. I did this on the occasional OTR run I'd make in the construction off season with my lowboy, it was MUCH cheaper to do this than to do IRP with a class 8 truck. Trip permits may be purchased online through a state's permitting system (also used for OS/OW permits) or at weigh stations/PoEs. They generally last for a few days, but I've also seen options to purchase annual permits, which would probably make sense for regional carriers who only travel through a few states.
    The permit fees add-up quickly, so this is only practical if someone rarely needs to cross state lines and the costs of those permits doesn't exceed the cost of just doing IFTA/IRP. For example, on an OS/OW (27,000# and 10'4" wide on no IFTA/IRP), running 471 miles through NM, I paid about $83 in fees related to registration and fuel tax, plus a $25 oversize permit fee. I would've only had to pay the OS fee if I'd been using IRP/IFTA. I think it's possible to get the fuel tax refunded by furnishing proof of fuel purchase, but that would be more hassle than it's worth.
    Since I have a CDL as a non-CDL hotshot, I'm also able to upgrade to occasional CDL-weight hauling through trip permits as well, while maintaining relatively cheap registration and no IFTA. The DOT seems to care more about axle and tire ratings not being exceeded than trailer GVWR, so it's possible to go well over 26k total GCVW without hassle, as long as the driver has a CDL and pays what's owed for upkeep of the roads through the trip permits. Since almost all of my loads are under 26,000 pounds, it's mostly worthwhile to just purchase the occasional permit at this time when a customer either gets the weight wrong or I just want to take a heavier load because it's paying well enough to cover permits and the additional fuel/wear-and-tear on my equipment. That would change quickly if I found myself regularly running heavy loads, $80 here and $120 there still add-up quickly, so the $1800 I estimate I'm saving in a year by doing things this way wouldn't take long to run out.

    This country has so many departments to do this or that. The fees are high and they are many, the insurance alone can make one not go for it. It's astronomically monetarily to operate any profitable trucking, Hot Shot operations. Some have to fold early due to all these fees being implemented initially and yearly. It seems GREED from federal and state entities always requiring all these fees with their hands extended, if not, they CLOSE you completely down with penalties!

    • @kfelix2934
      @kfelix2934 3 роки тому +2

      no. you do not need ifta.
      "When trucks or combinations have two axles and are at or under 26,000 pounds gross weight or registered gross weight, IFTA does not apply."
      Think of IFTA and CDL and commercial. So a 16-26ft box truck running around does not need IFTA the same for a non-CDL hotshot, just look at the trucks in your area.
      Do you see IFTA stickers on any of them ?
      Also one more thing if it was not clear, and semi 18wheeler doing intrastate does NOT have IFTA. So it boils down to if you cross state lines and the weight of the vehicle. In TX as long as my GVWR is 26000 or less no IFTA or if my GCWR is 26000 or less n IFTA for interstate travel.
      Contact your commercial vehicle enforcement for your "state" and for advise

    Let's make IFTA and fuel purchases a little simpler. You should buy your fuel wherever you get the lowest fuel price (pump price less state and federal taxes). All IFTA does is take the percentage of total miles you drove in each state divided by your average milage to get gallons used in that state and calculates the taxes you should have paid on fuel used in that state to that state. It then takes what you did pay in taxes to each state by purchasing fuel in each state and calculates your charge or credit for fuel taxes. Once these are all netted out for each state, you are billed or credited with the difference. What you pay in the end has nothing to do with where you buy fuel, it has to do with your prorated miles driven in each state and what you should pay them in fuel tax on a prorated basis. This should always be a relatively small number, positive or negative, because it is only the difference between all the state taxes you owed on fuel minus all the state taxes you already paid on fuel. IFTA takes care of transferring the money from one state treasury to the next based on all truckers use over the quarter and how much they paid in fuel tax in each state and how much each state is owed based on mileage driven.

    • @HotshotAdventures
      @HotshotAdventures  3 роки тому +2

      Remember ifta is for anyone hauling over 26k. Includes big rigs. Fuel tanks on big rigs average 150 gallons, and there are 2 of them.
      Hotshots also, some carry an auxiliary tank which could have capacity of 100+ gallons.
      So not everyone HAS to fuel in every state. If you are leaving California, where diesel is almost $4/gallon, and going to AZ, or nv, where diesel is much less, normal thought process would be to wait until you get to the next state. Well ifta makes sure truckers pay either way :)
