- Getting started is expensive!
There are a lot of requirements and money to be put down before you can even think of hauling your first load...in this video I outline what it cost ME and several requirements to get started.

I love that: "I would rather haul fewer loads than have someone tell me what I can or can't do".
Exactly why I want to start my own hotshot instead of leasing under someone.
I have been an owner operator for over 45 years with my own authority for the past 13 years and I will say you have laid out some good numbers. You have put together a very good break down on costs and some good info for people to think about. Good luck to you and Keep On Trucking..
Thank you Lonnie! That means a lot coming from a seasoned driver and owner operator! I appreciate it
Great information. Thanks Natalie! Stay safe out there and keep up the good job! 👌🏽
Thank you so much for sharing!!!!! We're new to the trucking community & very excited to get started!!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping us rookies starting up in a new business
My reason to continue, thank you
Glad to help
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is the kind of checklist I need as I plan and study to get into trucking next year. I learned something new. Didn’t know about Unified Carrier Registration.
I'm glad you take something out of it
Ucr is annual, check it out
All the best
You're always smiling, upbeat and positive. I enjoy your videos because of your attitude and all of the great info you present. Peace from NorCal
Thank you Zach!
Pro haul tv, tow piglet, and now you I really appreciate you all
Thanks so much edward, very kind of you 🙏
Hey 👋, good video Do you have Instagram?!)
Same, thanks
Hey Natalie! Thank you so much for this. This is a great list to start exploring avenues to get started. Your very awesome. Be safe and roll on!
Thanks Bryan! Hope it helps you out.
Just started trucking (1month) this is my ultimate goal way down the road! Thank you for the information!
Most welcome!
Thank you so much! I’ve been a diesel mechanic for 5 years now. Right out of high school, and now I feel like taking on a new challenge. I do appreciate you taking the time to explain everything. God Bless you! and I hope this channel grows! 🙏🏼
You'll have a huge jump on the rest being able to do all your own maintenance, best of luck

I have a question you might have answered already. What about a small business loan to cover expenses? Coming from someone that is unable to save 30+ k to start the business. I know it's risk reward , but it's scary jumping into it with little to no experience.
@@HadokenSWTOR with little to no experience in the industry as you say, I would start on a smaller scale, and test the waters, make sure this is something you can see yourself doing full time. (work for someone else, start with a smaller truck and trailer which will cost less, etc) I would start there before taking a loan out - then potentially finding out this is not what you can see yourself doing for 5+years
Melanie, TY TY TY....!!!
I will look this over and take all of what you said into consideration. I totally agree that whatever works for you may not be suitable for me or other drivers or those inspired to drive...however this information us Vital!
Great subject to talk about. Thank you.
Hi Natalie, Thank you for the video. Seems to me you really covered it. All the start up cost's and the first month you have to wait for the first payday ;-) Of course your right that you don't know what will happen when you first get started. Keep the Dirty side down & the Sunny side up!
Your points of discussion and related variables are very well articulated Natalie. Really enjoy your videos : )
I appreciate your comment! Thanks so much for it
Awesome video thanks for all the information that really broke it down
This video is probably a huge wake up call to many people daydreaming about doing this, you really have to be a person with their shit together & a decent amount of capital behind you..
Thanks
It's not something you just wake up one day and say I'm going to start driving! A lot more to it than that, whether you do hotshot, big rig, cargo van, animal transport, or rv transport! There is a lot to it..
Good video. She'll probably scare a lot of wanna be's away that think it's easy. I use Progressive Insurance, $1,900 down $1,150 for 10 months. I do use a dispatcher and he keeps me going with good loads with no less than $2.00 and up per mile. I've gotten many $3.00 and up. Like she say's, shop around. There are big differences, huge price variations. BTW, my dispatcher charges me 7%. He keeps my trailer (40') full and has my next load ready so no waiting for my next load.
@@kolodytrucking3233 where do you go threw for loads
I love how you are taking the time to share this. I am new to all this so I don’t know what some of the things are that you added cost to. Maybe you have a video that will explain a few of those?? Thank you for this video.
You are a true professional who knows business numbers from your real amounts great business logic ... OH and your smile is free thank you
Thank you Tim 😊
Very informative!!!!! I’m making my list and getting ready to jump in!!!
Wonderful!
Thank you for this video. I am interested in getting started.
Great info! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for the honesty here. There are so many people making videos that don’t explain how hard it can be to start a business. Keep up the good vids please!
Great vid ... thanks for the content!
OMG! I just found your channel aaaaand I’m in love with you! 😁 I came off the road in 2018 and I was doing expidite and I miss it but watching your channel I get to see you and understand everything that you’re doing and saying! You are built PERFECTLY and I’m the type who wants to tell a person of their best qualities and obviously you’re beautiful but you hear that daily but you know what you want in your work but you have a bubbly personality and your attitude is awesome!!! I love that you’re working as hard as you do and you make some people look like they’re lazy! Roll on ladies!!!
🧡💯😎
Thanks so much Alan! I have a lot of fun, and bust my butt a lot too :)
I dont know why it took you so long to find my channel, u could been watching me a year ago! :)
But either way I'm glad you're joining my crazy fun adventure.

Thank you so much for theses video's, I'm new also and I choose to work for myself, my legal zoom wasn't cheap. Thank u
Incredible! Thank you.
Thanks, great video, very friendly and informative 👍 Just wow! Soo many fees for someone wanting to start a business, surely a BIG write off, but upfront costs are whoa!
Thank you so much for this information!
😃
Great video and you can an not go over board on load securement you did good !
Appreciate all the information!!! Starting up out of Riverside!! 2021
Excellenf! Wish you tons of success!!
This was a great video. Thank you for the advice. I am about to actually start my own hot shot company on weekends while I'm working for a ltl freight company. Absolutely right though about how it's hard business at the beginning But Wish me luck and Cheers from Texas!!!
Congrats, and best of luck out there!
This is another one of your very thorough and informative videos. You may have said this in one of your vids, and I didn't catch it, but what CDL school did you go with? I'm looking at them now and they are almost three times the amount you mentioned!! Plus, I'm in Ventura County and most are in Orange or Riverside Counties. Be safe and stay well!. Paul
Thanks Natalie great video it really lets anybody thinking about getting into the business know what The Upfront costs are going to be and what they need to have in the bank and I see tow piglet followed your lead and getting the same style trailer you have I think it makes a lot of sense that trailer is way more versatile than flatbed thanks again for the great video and be safe out there
Upfront costs are high, but the freedom is awesome
Yeah I saw that, seems he's also listened to me in regards to running regional not OTR. It's flattering, and I'm happy to teach even the "pros" 😆💜👍
Excellent information 👍👍
I love being exempt from logging. 100 air mile radius. 40 years and I've never slept in a truck in my life. The few road trips I've had to take, I slept in motels. Day cab thing lol

Hi Natalie, I've been a long time viewer and I just love your content and I just want to say this was a fantastic video! Well presented and very informative - thank you so much for this time and effort you put into your videos.
I noticed you elected to go with the F350 chassis due to length laws. I've been pondering the same, I wanted to ask if you had any issues towing a 40' trailer with the F350 rental that did have the bed? Did you ever get cited or warned for being over length?
Thank you again Natalie for all you do, it is sincerely appreciated and your videos are very enjoyable to watch! Keep up the fantastic work! :)
Hi Kevin! Thank you for your continued support and kind words.
I had the same length with the enterprise rental, almost 67', no i was never cited or measured in that truck, but it was something I knew was an issue that had to be resolved quickly.
Thank you, Be safe out there
Yes sir, thank you
Nice job very professional
I really enjoyed this rundown of the costs etc. I also wish I had come across you sooner.
I'm glad you joined. Yup, been at this over a year--where you been at?? 😁
May I ask, what GVWR did you tag for?

Great video thanks for the info .. new sub Here From imperial valley California ✌🏼
Great video, first person to break it down with some numbers. Since you mentioned some things that had a annual fee I take it that dot , ca #, and ice are a one time thing? Have you checked to see about basing in another state for your plate? In my state a 44000lb plate is only about 750 max.
California i believe ranks as o e of the worst states for small business, you are right about that. Just like Elon and tesla moved out of cali, I might have to consider as well
U are great. U just say the truth. Tks
You always have great informative videos Natalie!!! Thank you and keep up the fine work!!!
As always, thanks for your support and kind words Norman
How do u book ur loads? Do u have a favorite load board u use?
I know I’m late to the party, but great video. I recently retired from being a heavy equipment mechanic, and I had alway looked at hotshot, from a maintenance point of view. That can be expensive!
This past year, my grandson has bought two Kenworth’s, so I may not get to stay retired as long as I wanted to.🤷🏻♂️😂😂😂
Help him out :)
He'll need someone he can trust
@@HotshotAdventures he already had a cow when he had to replace a couple of tires. He was expecting $150 each🤷🏻♂️.
I haven’t replaced any in over a year, and they were $800 each.
Yup, costs money to make money in this biz...he'll learn :)
My trailer tires cost $150/each ...
THANK YOU MAM ! IM FINNA GET TO WORK

Thank you So much for all this information. I still want to know more about Apportioned Plates ? Do I have to get them if I'm not planning to go coast to coast? I just wanna stay local, within 500 miles of my home. Any advise or info is appreciated. Thank you
How do you get apportioned plate on a enterprise rental, also did you get a weight sticker?

Are those tattoos on your arm, or do you write on yourself? And why don't you use tarps often? Not much rain, or rain doesn't matter?
I use my tarps as needed anytime. We don't get too much wet weather here so I dont tend to use them too much.
And yes, that's a tattoo on my arm

Hi Natalie I love watching your videos! Thank you for sharing all that knowledge! I have a question does any enterprise rental can rent me a truck for hotshot or is it only certain one that do? I know you mentioned Mishawaka Indiana! Please any information will help!
Yes many do
Try others

Nice share✊😎
Great Video!!!!
What company do u use for insurance ?
Hi Nat ! Quick question which company you used for the ifta / apportioned plates? Thank you 😊
You can Google commercial registration/plates. There are many 3rd party offices that will help you with that in your area.
What’s the difference between apportion plates and regular plates like a 4A registered
Really wonderful video a lot of useful important information and my question is it’s possible to find loads if you gonna start like “power only”? And commercial insurance - amount $4500 it’s all the time the same or possible to get different number ? Thank you
There are plenty of power only loads on the load boards. Yes its possible.
I dont understand your second question
@@HotshotAdventures Second question about commercial insurance - if I need to get this commercial insurance I gonna pay the same amount $4500 on the beginning?
You would need to speak with an insurance company or broker.
@@HotshotAdventures thank you so much!!!
What's the name of the company you purchase your load securement
Hi, I am in SoCal, near Fontana. Do you recommend the trucking school you went to? Already have permit and access to a truck for practice, but it's automatic and I need a manual for my test. Did your school allow truck for test only? Thank you.
Send me ur email
Hi hope your business is doing well, I have a question. After CDL school where did you learn how to tie down different loads? Did you take a leap of faith and learn as you went or did you have previous flatbed experience. I have plenty of driving experience but no flatbed experience and I'd really like to start a hotshot business..... Thanks for all the info!
Its a good question
I learned off youtube and learned as I went along. I didn't have any flatbed experience.
I did just start a load securement video series on my patreon page for people in situations just like yours! So you can learn the tips a d tricks and rules that I've learned over the past few years in one place.

I’m probably doing a dumb question, but what is the difference between the insurance that you pay for enterprise and the one that cost 4500 a month?
Two very separate instances that cover different things
Who did you use for your BOC-3? Everywhere I've looked wants to charge annually.
TBS
I'm curious how you got your business credit card so soon after getting your llc? usually it takes time to build business credit?
Its a good question. The business doesn't have any credit in the beginning, credit card companies will do a soft check on your personal credit score, and I believe based on that you're either approved or not.
What is llc just curious an what can i do if i have no cridit or just starting from the bottom with nuthing any help or ideas
Llc=limited liability company
If I'm not asking too much where did you go to learn the class A? What schooling did you go to is what I'm asking?
I would like to get started into hot trucking but have 0 experience in transportation any idea of how to get a feel for the trade before dropping $30k? Any advice is appreciated thanks (located in southern Cali) if that matters
Its a fair and good question. First thing I would suggest, you're already doing! Research, learn, feed yourself knowledge. Jump on the fmcsa website, learn guidelines. Decide what type of carrier you want to be, non cdl or cold, consider equipment, and start saving money! Youll need it to start
How do you get the insurance if you don’t know the vins on your equipment yet? Through enterprise or otherwise.
Watch my insurance video, I go over that
@@HotshotAdventures will do, thanks. Great content by the way. I’m still in the research and planning phase of my business.
Great Info, Thank you, What states do you try to avoid and why??
I just run cali and tri state around cali
There wouldn't be a state i would avoid, I wojldnt mind seeing them all at some point
Did they give you an inventory list to shop for regarding load materials?
Did who give me a list?
Great video! U pretty much covered it all! 👍🏻 has

Do they test for methadone??? I have a prescription..and I'm deadly afraid of BOTH failing and getting off it....
I been clean from drugs and on methadone for 4 years....but on heroin for 10...I got my life back on it ...I'm scared to get off ...its not a cop out I don't care what u think ...I just want to be a productive member of society
So curious just watching your video but how do you find loads now that your experience in the business
Truckstop and central dispatch
Do you feel the CDL route is an absolute necessity when running a Hotshot O/O LLC? I feel I've been seeing more and more that don't go the full distance with going the CDL route which will limit certain freight you can do and hauls, but curious your opinion. Thanks
You can run hotshot either way.
@@HotshotAdventures I can't make up my mind of which I want to run, thought about going the non CDL route for a bit and then maybe getting one, but I might go towards the CDL at the start so I can do bigger loads and get it done before the changes in the law in Feb 2022.
So pretty.
Great info. . I've been researching, and looking into getting into the Hott Shot Trucking Business, I currently have a 2014 F250 XLT 4X4, I was wondering if I can start off with that truck which is gas until, I grab a diesel truck. My GVWR is 9900, and my GAWR is 6100. . As long as I'm under 26,001 pounds with my trailer I should be good to go as Non CDL??

Im thinking about buying a Diamond C18000 gvwr and derating it to 15000... any thoughts ?
insurance is cheaper, books are easier, less stressful, the money isnt as much but you can do well, plus if you get ticketed isnt the fines less !
that im not sure because back when i was a class A I only had one fine rolling into florida, I forgot about my tandems... 100 dollars yikes !
Derating a trailer is lowering the weight capacity on the sticker. It doesn't change the cost of insurance, and only you can change your stress level, not a sticker with a number on it. :)
Seems like you have it all worked out, I'm not sure where you need my thoughts on anything...I have heard diamond c is a good manufacturer, I think thats what ill be trying out next myself.
Kingpin Law right?
Hello Natalie, just curious as to why you went all the way to, I believe you said, Mishawaka Indiana to rent your Enterprise truck?
Only.place I found that had the truck available, and at a reasonable rate.
Every enterprise is different
@@HotshotAdventures oh wow. I've been tossing the idea of renting versus buying, mainly with the fact that they exchange the truck every 60k in our responsible for all the major maintenance. Luckily I happen to live in Indiana so it wouldn't be too far for me to go get one if that's the place to go. Thank you for all your content.
What trucking school did you use?
Think it would be a bad idea to factor in the beginning until you start getting money built up?
In my opinion, its best to have your own capital to float you through your firsr few months, not a payday loan company (factor company)
do you really need a cdl for a dully and flatbed
It depends on how much weight you want to haul.
thank you for this. does it matter what state the bank is in? the business bank account?
Nope
@@HotshotAdventures thank you!

Hello how did you get the start up funds? I’m in the transportation industry I have a CDL A trying to start my own company.
I appreciate any information thanks in advance
Save money or get a loan are probably the 2 most common ways
@@HotshotAdventures I was just asking I been holding a CDL since 2011 and I noticed a bunch of companies starting up during and current while going through the pandemic.
I just thought it was money out there that I didn’t know about.
I heard that it was grants and loans and the PPP loans. Personally I was thinking that you are starting up just like I would want to without having to go to get my cdl and the other things. Besides the MC AND DOT number the trucks and trailers cost a grip.
So did you save or get a loan?
What direction did you go in?
Thanks
