why do you have an American accent?
What a wonderful explanation. You have the most delightful narration voice to listen to. Beautifully spoken. 👌
@@rehan2118 perhaps she is from Canada, part of the British Commonwealth and living in London like many from other nations do. Margaret's knowledge of British Coronations is exceptional.
The history of the coronation is pretty fascinating to me.. gonna be so interesting seeing one played out now because the last one was before I and a lot of us out there were born.
I did watch the last one, along with half the street (about 60 people) crammed into our Drawing Room, around the small B&W TV, can't actually remember it as only 19 months old at the time. Mum never stopped telling all and sundry that 2 packets of tea, 8 pints of milk and many bottles of beer, Sherry and Champagne were consumed, that Dad was fed up running up and down to the cellar to fetch them (and a trip to the off licence). The festivities continued late into the evening and night. It wasn't an organised party, just a mention to a couple of neighbours to come and watch on our TV. The grapevine took over.
Yes - I can't wait to see it!
@@tonys1636 What a story, Tony! I'm so glad you shared it. I feel a trip to the off license ahead of this coronation myself ;)
This coronation is a waste of public money
@@MargaretBlyth why?
When I visited about three weeks ago, I toured Westminster Abbey. In my ears I had my AirPods on full blast whilst listening to Zadok the Priest and the hymn I Was Glad, two pieces of music that are performed during coronations. It was epic to walk up through the quire to the altar where Charles will be anointed and crowned. Even though I won’t be in the Abbey on the 6th of May, I felt during that visit, I was able to get a glimpse of this time honoured religious ceremony.
Oh that sounds like SUCH an awesome experience, Nathan! What a great idea.
What is a "quire"?
@@MsDana-mo9fp the quire is a designated area inside a cathedral or church after the chancel screen but before the altar which provides seating for a choir and clergy. The quire has installed seating on both sides of and facing the aisle.
I would have done the same thing. I bet you felt goosebumps too.
Thanks for sharing. I was just there 3 weeks ago. I purchased some Twinings tea, a 24ct Gold plated Carriage spoon from Windsor Castle, biscuits from Fortnum and Mason, and a Union Jack souvenir flag, a magnet with King Charles III, along with a London wine stopper for the London after party. I'm in the spirit to witness a Royal Coronation from the USA. I'm sure I will watch this again as the coronation gets closer.
That sounds like a great haul, Sheila! I'll definitely be getting some coronation merchandise for sure!
This was very informative and beautifully put together. Thanks for another great video Margaret.
My pleasure, as always :)
An enjoyable and informative 25 mins. You clearly worked hard on this. Thanks. A couple of points: A. 1:29 The monarch has no "Divine Rights". This is what the revolution of 1688 got rid of. B. 15:36 The anointing with oil doesn't signify, anymore, that the monarch is "chosen by God" but is, rather, a signifier of God's grace and blessing.
I take your points, Kincardine! :)
The "chosen by God" in reference to the anointing is a verbatim quote from one of the priests at Westminster Abbey. Makes me wonder if there is a quiet, different interpretation within the church..?!

It's tradition for senior members of the royal family to 'lie in state' prior to their funerals. You may have seen the late Queens casket at Westminster Hall. Fun fact: A British king or queen does not need a coronation in order to be the legitimate Sovereign. However, a coronation is still a legal eventuality. The Coronation Oath Act 1688, reaffirmed by the Act of Settlement 1701, requires the Sovereign to take a coronation oath which, by extension, mandates a coronation at some point during their reign. The reciprocation of a coronation following the accession proclamation, which itself merely confirms the royal succession, makes pretty good sense when one takes into account the common law construct of the demise of the Crown. The Sovereign is the personification of the British state and remains the ultimate source of public authority, it being exercised either through the courts of law, with the consent of Parliament, or on the advice of Ministers of the Crown. The demise of the Crown, beginning at accession and concluding with coronation, therefore serves to uphold the continuity and stability of British institutions, ensuring politicians remain subservient to the electorate and don't attempt to overthrow democracy. That pretty much sums up what constitutional monarchy is all about.
Indeed, Noah! :)

Apart from Charles himself, will there by anyone at his Coronation who was also at QE2's coronation?
The Dukes of Kent and Gloucester and possibly Prince Michael of Kent and his sister Princess Alexandra
Too bad they are not inviting Lady Pamela Hicks, 94. She would have been the only one to attend 3 coronations; George VI's in 1937 as a child, ( bonus Queen Elizabeth's Wedding in 1947 as a bridesmaid), and Queen Elizabeth's Coronation in 1953 as a lady in waiting. Charles should have allowed her to be a "Three-peat" as an homage to his ever-patient Mom. Hopefully somebody bestows their invitation to her as an act of good manners and gallantry.

From an Anglican or Catholic perspective, the moment of coronation and anointing is when Charles, really becomes king, just as the anointing is when an ordinary person becomes priest.
Good comparison, Emlyn! Thank you.
simon abney hastings that is who.
By God's command alone; on Saturday 6th May 2023; in Westminster Abbey; without any need of crystal balls; the entire world will witness those two entities, along with everyone else who supports them, all taking on their destined roles; merrily ushering in the incunabula of the final days of the once considered, highly esteemed British Monarchy.
Not so sure about this but who knows..!
King Charles will feign being all-forgiving towards Prince Harry like the Prodigal Son's Father and act as though he is abdicating on the spot in a surprise move and announce that he wishes Harry to be crowned instead of William. Harry, fooled by this magnanimous gesture, sits on King Edward's Chair, and King Charles, about to place the crown of St. Edward on Harry's head, lifts it away at the last second, and yells "Psych!!!". King Charles, Prince Harry, and Princess Kate have hearty laugh along with the 2000 guests and red-faced Harry, storms out of the Abbey bawling back to his private jet at Heathrow to fly back to Montecito.
