OK, so Bacalar isn't exactly hidden, but compared to the rest of the tourist packed areas of Mexicos Yucatan it certainly felt like it! It is not overflowing with tourists yet, and a lot of the tourists seem to be Mexicans from elsewhere in the country. Spending a day on the lagoon (with 7 shades of blue, including the brightest you can imagine) and the floating down Los Rapidos was one of my favourite things I did and saw in Mexico. Did I mention it is all freshwater? It also has a pretty town square, lots of restaurants and even an old Spanish for that used to fight pirates! Mahahual is just a tiny little beach town, that is basically empty except for a few hours a week when the cruise ships show up (plan accordingly).

Great idea! Thanks. I normally stay in hotels or hostels, not resorts, but in Mahahual it was “Blue Kay” and in Bacalaar I honestly don’t recall the name. It was nice enough, but I was treating myself that week and I think it was overpriced; wouldn’t stay there again. I’d go somewhere cheaper, or nicer for the same price. TONS of options there
