Ride Patagonia | Locusts, Llamas, Ostriches | A Patagonian Motorcycle Adventure |
Riding the famous Ruta 40 in Argentinian Patagonia, the first stop is at the incredible 9,000 year old Cueva de Los Manos (Cave of the Hands), after which the day continued to amaze with herds of guanacos crossing the road in front of me, a literal plague of locusts across miles of road, an ostrich type bird called a rhea (!) and as always dogs trying to attack the motorcycle. This is what riding a motorcycle in Patagonia is all about, and was a welcome change after the trouble I'd had in the last few days.

Tips for motorcycle travel: How to pack for the trip, what to bring, what to avoid, and more

Here is everything I packed for my motorcycle trip and 2 years on the road. I will show you everything that I have packed, a few little "hacks", what I think is a non-negotiable, what I regret bringing and how I've organized. My motorcycle is a 2020 Honda CB500X, bought brand new before the trip and now has over 70,000kms on it. I have lived with what is in this video for ~2 years. Did you find...

Excited to finally get a proper start to my Patagonian motorcycle adventure riding the legendary Ruta 40, I was quickly hampered by an issue with my motorcycle (Honda CB500X). If you know about Argentina, you know the one thing you don't want to have to do is search for and pay for motorcycle parts. Because of the import taxes that Argentina has on moto parts, all parts (and even worse, tires) ...

Exploring the "Hidden History" of Bariloche, Argentina
Переглядів 21014 днів тому
Argentina is one of my favourite countries on earth, and Bariloche is arguably one of the prettiest areas in the whole country. While most people head here to do outdoorsy type things, I am not much of a hiker. Instead, I did some research into the area and was fascinated with what I found. From hidden Nazi bunkers and (most certainly false) rumours of Hitler escaping to the area to a former N*...

Here is my quick review of the TKC 70 Rocks rear motorcycle tire. The perspective that I offer is from someone who has spent around 2 years and over 70,000kms travelling across the Americas on my 2020 Honda CB500X. The overwhelming majority of that time has been spent on TKC 80s, which I found offered an unparalleled combination of grip on both pavement and dirt. The main drawback of the TKC 80...

    YIKES!! That's a lot of stuff!😀It's good to get a perspective though as I scale up my trips. Generally I'm out for about a week at a time. I pack my panniers, one side with stuff I'm likely to use, the other side is stuff I'm not likely to use. The stuff I'm likely to use are clothes, toiletries, walking shoes. I have a top duffle bag for the tent, sleeping bag, swimming stuff, swimming trunks, towel, flip-flops, whatever else. Although I take camping gear, I usually motel it and so I usually only take the pannier with stuff I'm likely tp use into the room with me, the rest stays on the bike. I'd like to point out how much room walking shoes can take up...I pack 'barefoot' trail running shoes like the Merrell Trail Glove which is super thin and packs very compactly.

      Haha, after the comment telling me I packed so light, I was wondering how long until someone said I took way too much lol. I think I overpacked on clothes, and could have left the camping stuff as I didn’t use it in South America (although it was great insurance/comfort). Other than that, I think for 2 years on the road I’m kinda in between the super minimalists and the maximalists who I see riding with extra tires and all lol. And yeah, extra shoes are needed for off the bike, as well as one of everything as backup in case the main one gets wet. I experienced the misery of not being able to get properly dry for over a week and it’s wasn’t fun lol

    Hmm.. if you switch to woolen socks, you should be able to reduce the number of socks, as with your t-shirts/ shirts.. easier to wash & dry aswell..🤔

    • @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
      @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 2 дні тому

      That’s 100% correct in theory, but in practice wool socks are too thick/warm for warm weather, and if I could find thin enough ones they would just get chewed up like all my socks. I actually do have a couple sets of thin merino wool boxers for emergencies (lol), but the reality is socks and underwear need to be fresh for me; I HATE putting on used socks or underwear and will avoid at all costs lol 😬

    This was interesting and helpful! I returned a week or so ago from a trip from California to the Arctic and have been evaluating my gear choices with an eye toward what to change next time. One suggestion I would add is to sacrifice a bit of money and space and upgrade the air compressor to a Cycle Pump. The no-name pumps can and do fail (ANY pump will fail if you let it draw in dusty air), and Cycle Pumps have a stellar reputation. They also include an affixed Velcro strap useful for suspending the pump body from the bike while in use. Also, I found the model-specific Eastbound wheel removal (axle nut) kit very useful, along with a small metric ruler, in fact necessary, for chain adjustments. I’m more of a one t-shirt (for off the bike)/two or three pair of socks guy, but that’s just me 😊 Safe travels!

      Congratulations, that is some accomplishment! Yeah I could definitely see having a good reliable name brand one being a better option. Mine has always (slowly) worked, but it does feel cheap and I could see it failing; not what you want when it’s your only option! Cheers

      Thanks Ken. I watched your Inuvik-area videos a few times (as cautionary tales 😊) and got a kick out of them. My riding partner made a partial trip last year and, after his and his friend’s bike getting four flats on the Dempster, both of their pumps failed (due to not keeping them elevated), resulting in their turning around. Lesson learned! We took two Cycle Pumps on this year’s ride (and of course had no flats on the Dempster). A rock took out my side stand switch, though, which was fun.

    Cautionary tale on the dehydrated meals. I hiked with a few of them in my backpack, and then ate one with chicken in it about 6 months later. Got sick for a couple days. The shaking around with other things can make tiny holes in the bag over time and it will go bad like any other meat. I’d advise eating any meals you take shortly after the trip, just to be safe.

    • @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
      @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 3 дні тому

      Interesting! I never thought of that, but it makes sense. I wonder if keeping them in a ziplock bag, and the inspecting the ziplock bag for holes prior to consuming would work 🤔. I only really carried them as back-ups, and could be months and months old banging around in my cases. Good to know!

    Hey, I've got a 2021 CB500X (from new) with 23,000 km on it and I noticed the same type of leak. Took it to Honda dealership 2 days ago and the mechanic told me it's a known problem, just as you said. They said they will replace the water pump but also mentioned, that many times even after replacing it it starts leaking again. It's kind of annoying. I haven't had any other problems whatsoever.

Not as good off-road as TKC’s of course, but did some gnarly dirt roads just fine and went for around 15,000kms (!) and was noticeably smoother on road. Hey! Yeah, it was quite sandy and crazy in parts. It was a couple of months back I was there, I’m slow editing and posting the videos lol. I’d imagine it is very very cold right now 🥶. Most of the road was actually grand, but there were quite a few short sections of some of the deepest and most challenging sand I’ve been on. I hate sand! So I’d say it mostly depends on your confidence/ability to deal with that with a pillion; I’m sure others have done so. Also, they are constructing a nice straight road and while under construction the road in use just kind of snakes along back and forth on either side of the new road (a couple of times I used the under construction new road to avoid sand traps); I’d imagine the road is like a few others I’ve been on where it changes day to day and week to week depending on weather, truck traffic and maintenance/grading. Either way it should be an adventure!

      @@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 What a great report, thanks a lot. Indeed, I'm not the best sand rider. In fact, I sh1t my pants when I see sand, eh. Gotta practice it, because the road seems cool! Greetings from Curitiba-Brazil!

      That’s kinda what I thought it may be, but the texture and taste wasn’t like any cabbage I’ve ever had before 🤷🏽

    Hi Ken. Not sure but that food could have been fermented cabbage? they eat a lot of that in Germany for good gut health. Keep up the good work. Mike.

      Hey Mike! Yeah I thought it may have been sauerkraut as it looked similar (although red/brown), but it didn’t taste like any I’ve had before. The mystery continues lol

    Did you ever make it to Valdivia during your trip? Perhaps in a future video?

      I didn’t make it there, Chile has just been shockingly expensive compared to all the other countries so far so I won’t be spending too much time unfortunately

    Hey, thanks for this video! I'm doing this crossing tomorrow - nice to know where to go now & great to hear there are no copies needed, haha! Hope your wrist didn't hold you back in your travels! Those water things are a pain, I had an almost slide today, exactly the same way. Cheers!

      Ah great, I made the video hoping it would help someone out. It was an amazing and fun ride! Watch out for that water crossing where I slid out, I’ve since found out that it is semi-permanent and I’m not the first to go down there 😬

    Another good vlog. Don't just do "a little bit of the "Carretera Austral". You should ride nearly the entire route to at least Lago General Carrera after starting it in Puerto Montt. It's a top tier road that shouldn't be skipped. From Santiago, ride back to Argentina and head south via RT40 to Bariloche and then cross back to Chile and Puerto Montt.
