Hello Duncan! Now that the comments are online I'd like to be able to personally say thank you for your help learning how to paint models over the past year. Your guides have been supremely helpful and it's nice to see you working online again.
I want to ask since I haven't seen you answer this question yet: Will you be putting out videos that tackle more advanced subjects, such as Wet-blending, zenithol highlighting, how to do secondary edge highlighting and general tips for doing more difficult stuff? Now that you've come to work on your own and have a lot more freedom to do what you like, I'd love to see you teach and discuss more advanced techniques for painters who want to expand beyond what a general GW speed paint tutorial can teach them.
I understand of course if this channel will be more for doing the same sort of basic stuff to help people in a much more broad sense, and either way I'm excited to see what you do next!
Thank you for the kind words. We're glad we have done our small part to help you learn to paint. To answer your question, we will be looking at doing some more advanced stuff on the site but our main aim is to help beginners and intermediates. Saying that, there is always space to improve and we will be looking at some higher end stuff in the future too.
Just guessing, but I'd imagine the more detailed or advanced tutorials may be reserved for subscribers to the Academy.

Gotta admit I was expecting a different kind of Imperial Stormtrooper
0Elmilo0 he had us at First half, I’m not gonna lie
Hmmm I'd like to see Duncan do some old school metal inqusitorial Storm troopers
40k or 1940s lol
Did he say: “straight from the pot”? I thought that was illegal in the UK ...
It depends on which lords fiefdom you fall under and to how far the ancient edicts hold truth.
Large swaths of nottingham, for example, fall under some of the harshest laws.
do you have the thinning your paints license?
Contrast paints don’t need to be watered down, usually.
Is he using the contrast paint or a normal paint colour?
Oh I see, apothecary white is only a contrast paint. Never mind
This is the painting guide I'm looking for.
😂😂😂
I see, and like, what you did there
This is the way
@@christopherpeery7436 this is the way.
I don't remember this Imperial Guard regiment...
They were renanmed to Tempestus Scions.
>.>
@@nakenmil I had to look it up but I actually didn't know the Scions were called Storm Troopers, this joke couldn't be more perfect.
Obviously they're members of the 501st Kaminoan.
I'm gonna throw this out there: gloss finish. The movie troopers are incredibly glossy with that plastic finish. Adding a coat of a gloss varnish at the end helps the miniatures read as Stormtroopers, IMO.
I would also like to add I'm glad you're still finding a way to teach people how to paint. I learned a lot from you over the years!
If you're doing desert troopers, you can just say the glossy sheen has been sandblasted off.
I was thinking the same, at least for troopers that are in cities or stationed on star destroyers, away from grime and expected to keep their armor gleaming at all times.
I love that you're using non-citadel paints now, it gives a much wider range of paints that I can learn how to use!
it makes me uncomfortable
I'm glad he's bringing more Citadel-only people into the more affordable, more versatile world of Vallejo/Army Painter/Reaper Master Series paints! Dropper bottles are such a blessing, too.
@@2WARDEN2 I love the citadel colour range so much more than 90% of the competition... but fuck me if dropper bottles aren't a godsend
@@2WARDEN2 Well... Vallejo and Reaper anyways. I've never had much positive experience with the quality of AP products and firmly believe AP only survives off the "It's cheaper than GW!" and anti-"name brand" mentality crowd. I've yet to encounter an acrylic paint brand that wasn't simultaneously cheaper than GW and better quality than AP.
@@2WARDEN2 My paint collection is mostly all citadel but I got a lot of scalecolor too, but for some things (like the pure white in this video), it's true that citadel isn't the best. Citadel's off whites are some of the best IMO but their pure whites tend to cake up super rapidly and become a solid mess in the pot
YES!!!! YOU ARE BACK!!!! PRAISE TO THE CHAOS GODS!!!! YOU HAVE YOUR OWN CHANNEL!!!! BETTER THAN CHRISTMAS!!!!!
Good ol'Duncan still in the Imperium, different universe tho
I love the fact that you’re not obliged to use just one brand of paints, this is the start of a golden era of duncan tutorials!
yeah it's funny, as SOON as he left GW he immediately started using The army painter and anything else he felt like xD
Thanks for this! I've been holding off on painting my stormies from Legion because of all that white.
Glad we could help. It's a nice simple technique and should help you get your Stormtroopers on the battlefield in no time at all.
Seeing Duncan Painting Legion models using Army Painter is like getting a peep into an awesome alternative universe
Being able to comment on a duncan video is a true treat! Plus a non GW product and non citadel paints?! What a new world!
Looks amazing and im gonna go pick up some stormtroopers and try this out!
All hail the god of two thin coats!
The mixed paints tutorial helped me a lot! thank you!
Miniature lighting is now perfect! 😍
Hey Duncan, when do you think you'll be doing Clone Wars models for painting tutorials? (if you even like that era anyways) And it's great to see you branching out, I was really curious what Star Wars stuff you do since I saw the legion box in the background!
Hey thanks for this Duncan! Was looking for something to send a friend who just started his Star Wars Legion Army.
Appreciate the continued hard work on your channel!
Glad we could help. Hope your friend finds the tutorial useful.
Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy I hope so too, she’s new to mini painting, but this will help her greatly. I hope to see more from you from this range of minis!
And now that I can say it here:
Duncan. Thank you, for teaching me how to paint. All the techniques, the methods.
It's both weird and fantastic to see you paint non Citidel models with non Citidel paints! Great to see you painting again, Duncan!
Duncan is back with great new stuff. My life goes on :-) Thanks for this great video!
Duncan! So great to be able to leave comments - really appreciate your great videos (both historically on Warhammer TV and going forward at Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy)! Thanks for taking the fear out of painting (especially as someone coming back to the hobby as an adult - I've really found some great satisfaction it in so far)!
Thanks Duncan! Just got a kit of phase 2 clone troopers and wasn't sure how to paint the white! Excellent video as always. Glad to see you branching out from just warhammer!
The BEST painted Stormtrooper on UA-cam! Outstanding work guys. This channel is knocking it out of the park (I now scurry off to buy some miniature Stormtroopers 😃).
Thanks Keith 😊 you'll enjoy painting them plus you can get a scale AT-ST too! It's amazing! Fun game too
Yaaaaaaaaay 💪 so excited for this... finally get to say thank you for atleast 3 years of closely monitoring your work
Brilliant video Mr Duncan sir.
And thank you so much for not using the Dog awful 3 quarter view in the intro. This video felt so much more personal. Which is awesome.
Hey Duncan, as someone else said now that comments are allowed. I can't thank you enough for the Leviathan Hive Fleet tutorial you did. Thank you so much for this, and the videos yet to come.
Been watching your videos for years on WHTV and am so glad you have your own channel now. I have Darth Vader ready and waiting for your tutorial on him.
First of all; Thank you Duncan! I know you were personally involved in my return to the hobby and a number of friends as well. Really excited to see you try some new things like using a wet pallet, Glazing, NMM (maybe even sky earth chrome.) My favorite way now is directional lighting and glazing (thanks to Darren Latham and Vince V.) I truly believe your teaching style could bridge the gap on some advanced techniques for people as you make the impossible seem very attainable with only 2 thin coats.
T..t..two thin coats of paint!? So good to have you back!
Great to see you still doing this!
Thank you for everything Duncan! You helped me so much getting back to the hobby and becoming a much better painter.I'm really glad and excited that you are back with your own channel and can't wait for new videos. Thanks again!
Oh glorious master of two thin coats I have a question, will you paint Darth Vader from the star wars legion expansion pack sometime in the future? I've bough mine a while ago but can't decide how to paint it.
Hi alexgamer 155, we will definitely be adding a tutorial on our site of Darth Vader in the near future. We both love that character and it wouldn't be Star Wars without 😊
2 thin coats should have been the channel name haha
Awesome! Where were you when I was painting my 5 squads of stormtroopers a few months back!! lol You rock! can't wait to see more!!
Love this so much. Your stromtrooper is one of the highest quality ones I've seen!
First video: citidel miniature & paints.
Second video: non-citidel miniature & mixed paints.
Third video: who knows...
Who knows indeed? 😉
Duncan painting Star Wars? Man... That's almost too much. Love it!
Hello, Duncan! Just wanna to say thank you, cause you’re really good, and I’m glad you’ve found the way out of GW’s basement) Your video about ork flesh really inspired me to paint my orks! So thanks!
Yo Duncan! So happy that you have your own channel now! :)
More power to you!
Thank you so much for this... I'm painting some for my own army. :D This is great. I started my first army on your videos and I've already managed to nab three best painted awards with it. Friggin hero, man.
HOW DO YOU CEEP THE EDGES OF YOUR POTS SO CLEAN!! Witchcraft!
He's just that good
Buying new ones for each video.
Take off the lid and clean them.
Love you Rodger! Love you Duncan! Something I think would be interesting to see is painting different material minis and how that changes process. For example, the old school metal minis from either GW or others
Thanks Max. We'll look into that for future video's.
You got that contrast paint on so smooth
Hey there,
first of all I want to say thank you. I just recently started painting miniatures and I did with a Warhammer 40k Necron Army. That was the first time I saw a paint Tutorial of you for the regular Necron Warrior and I have to say I watched every video on Warhammer TV with you in it since then. I wouldn't have stick with the hobby if it weren't for those Tutorials because it can be difficult to sort things out at the beginning and get a general idea of what to do an what not to do.
In any case im excited to see you are building something up on your own, independent from GW, which means you can be much more free with paints, brushes and of course models.
Although all the videos from your Channel are explaind clearly, briefly but on point here is some constructive criticism if that helps.
What I would like to see, is to maybe go into detail about the choices that you make about paints and brushes and maybe just explain a bit more about the techniques that you use and why.
Otherwise, its glad to have you back on YT and I will definetly sign up on your page once it's up. Looking forward to watch a lot more of your Tutorials.
I wish you both great success!
Thank you so much for this guide. I will use it right away
I missed you Duncan. You got me into the miniature painting hobby and it's good to see you succeeding on your own. As always I enjoy your content and best of luck to you!
I love how the armor doesn't look white until you add the black details and suddenly it gets brighter with each coat. Such a cool effect!
Thanks Duncan! I was looking for a way to chew through my Clone Troopers from Legion fast and this seems to be the trick. Nice, sharp looking and easy to do.
Is really good to see the paint god use something else than the gw’s product!
Great job as always and thanks for all the tips, tricks and techniques
I have always found your tutorials helpful. Keep up the good work.
Great to see you again Duncan. Subscribed so fast!
Thanks Stephen :-)
Wow! That looks amazing
Hey duncan you might not see this but seriously thanks for the help with painting all these years! I also have a request: it would be pretty cool if you could do a painting tutorial for death korps of krieg.
Hey Duncan, great work as always. My suggestion is to also tell users what size of brush to use (O-000, 1, 2, 4) etc, and what the Citadel equivalent might be. This could help your students ensure they are using the right size brush is.
Amaziiing! More videos of Legion please!!!!
Clone wars
Thanks Duncan : Now I can use this technique to paint White Scars.
You sure can Atholl.
finally some good painting tutorials
Hello GUTS.
Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy :)
Duncan using non-citadel paints?! I like it. Would be cool to see you paint some Reaper minis too.
Fantastic video! Huge fan of the work you did for Games Workshop! I look forward to see what future things you create.
I really liked the video. I send a link to a friend of mine that is painting his first mini's which are also stormtroopers.
I love the way that you also explain why you do or don't do certain things with the paint, the mini and the brushes.
The only thing that needs a bit of improvement is the audio. It sounds like you are filming this in the bathroom at some points.
Glad you are back with some more painting tutorials Duncan!!
Amazing tutorial, really has me wanting to paint some stormtroopers. Thank you for this.
I’m glad I was doing a similar thing for my blasters: leadbelcher and black templar
Might be a tall order so soon, but I loved Duncan's tutorials on the greater daemons. I'd love to see him finally do one on the Keeper of Secrets to appease Slaanesh.
Thanks for this and your other tutorials. Would really love a Shoretrooper tutorial (hint hint)
Duncan,
I would like to thank you for these tutorials. The techniques have definitely helped my painting and seeing your videos helps return my motivation to paint all my unpainted minis.
One real basic lesson request, could you do a video on proper priming technique? I always feel I over prime.
4:06 Duncan using army painter. 2020 is a strange new time
Working at GW he was probably only allowed to use citadel
@@neoknight9180 it’s got a lot weirder since that comment... :)
Nice white 😁 ... Will be trying this on some world eaters .. Thank you Sir
Bonjour Duncan. Merci pour cette vidéo ! Ravi de vous voir peindre du Star Wars Légion, en espérant voir de nombreux tutos peintures sur ce jeu! Bonne continuation
God's working is truly godly
The white contrast paint is an absolute godsend for these kinds of tasks! Amazing stuff! Also glad to have you back, and I can't wait to see you work on different miniatures! Make us discover new mini brands while you teach us how to paint at the same time, that would be neato!
Thanks for this duncan !!!!
I really appreciate your tutorials, and I'm thrilled you've expanded. I 3D print a lot of custom miniatures, and I wondered if you planned on doing any tutorials on painting 3D prints.
I do like this format! Keep it coming. I am interested to see, what your subscription will be like. But for now : how do you clean your plate after painting?!
Duncan... I wish you to paint gazkhull thraka when it arrives... Well done and hello from 🇪🇸!
Why does this feel so good?
Hello Duncan! I'm trying to paint some Feudal Guard for my Warhammer 40,000 custom army, and I think purple is a good colour for troops belonging to a royal family - could you show us some good schemes that go along with that colour?
As a Hive Fleet Leviathan collector, I can't recommend their purple colour scheme enough, I'd just follow that. I believe Duncan did a great tutorial on one of the big beasties in Leviathan colours on the Warhammer channel. Just copy the purple scheme, and you can't go wrong.
Its so odd being able to comment on a duncan painting video. :P
duncan! thank you!!
Thanks for your painting guides, legend!
Our pleasure. But thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. It means the world to us. Hope you like the video.
I can't express enough how happy I am that you decided to stuck with tutorial production after leaving GW. It's utterly your fault I "accidentally" stopped building Gunpla and sci-fi stuff and instead got hooked on minis and brush painting so it's only fair you stick around to support my habit ^_^ I can't wait to see what you will get up to now your choice is unlimited!
So glad to see that you're still doing painting tutorials, Duncan
I used the same white process to paint the "flesh" for my Hive Fleet Mantis bugs - they worship at the altar of the stabbiest of shrimp. But it turned out really really well.
DUNCAN LIVES! *STOMP STOMP*
Awesome to see you back. I learned painting from you and i intend to keep learning.
Good day to you, good sir!
Interesting video^^
I am looking forward for the opening of the academy :)
Fantastic work - maybe you could show us how to do some battle damage and cheap weathering techniques with this finished storm trooper - he won't stay that clean for long in the hot deserts of Tattoine....
Duncan I learned so much watching your old Warhammer video's. Thank you for that! I am looking forward to seeing much more of your new video's without GW watching over your shoulder. One question: Why don't you use a wet palette? I always thought you didn't use one, to let the paints dry easy and GW pocket grow bigger.
Duncan and AP paints. That's like dividing by zero.
Awesome I'll try this on my clone troopers - I used the dry citadel white on then after apothecary white and not too happy with it.
very well done sir!! but my Pauldron is actually a Texas flag pauldron... I'm in the 501st and I am a stormtrooper when we do charity events... and boy I get loads of folks loving my pauldron...cause I'm in Texas ... THANK YOU for everything you have done and doing!! I will be watching all of your videos as time allows!!
I find this interesting because the paint job is still in line with, as far as I can tell, the 'eavy metal style of painting. Do you think you will ever deviate from this specific style of painting?
Edit:. I think I should clarify the question. What I mean by deviate from the style is Branch out and explore/demonstrate different methods of painting. I ask because the heavy metal style is very striking and makes great use of sharp and crisp highlights, but I feel like it doesn't use techniques such as blended highlights or the use of glazing often. I would really enjoy a tutorial on these that you did. As always I pour out two thin coats of the god liquid Nuln Oil in your honor.
Tbh it's just duncan painting style at this point
I think you are wrong about the 'eavy metal style ignoring those techniques. Go have a look at Darren Latham's chanel (while you still can). He uses them all, and produces the 'eavy metal look.
Now since comments are allowed, I jut want to say thank you for the video, and all the great videos you made over at GW. The have been of great help!
If you happen to read this, what is the pro & con of layering up a colour, starting dark and lighting it up with layers, over starting light, and dirtying it down with washes?
Hey Duncan I'd love to see you tackle some miniatures Marvel Crisis Protocol
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills! Watching Duncan paint a different company’s model with gasp....dropper bottle paints! Great work as always, best of luck with the new channel.
I look like I'm in an earthquake when I'm painting compared to how steady your hands are!
Cool vid, thank you!
I'm so glad that the legendary inaccuracy of the Stormtroopers didn't rub off onto your brushwork. Great tutorial for painting white on armour. :)
Man what a great voice!
After watching this video I realized all my Stormtroopers are missing the black brow line.... oof
What I do is grey seer undercoat and apply nuln oil heavily watered down with medium.
Love seeing that Duncan is painting again in stream. He’s honestly such a pillar in the community.
Subscribed and here to stay :)
Hello Duncan, that stormtrooper looks Terrific!
I’m a beginner, just got my first set of minis and I was wondering if These colors and the techniques you used here would work on clone troopers.
Not death korps of krieg.... Cant say im dissapointed this is amazing
