I really like this method. I've tried several different methods, and this one was the one I got the best results with. I am a novice painter, but using the contrast as shown in this video let me make the edges of the armor stick out without making the rest of the model look dirty. Thank you!
@Critical Hit Wargaming it looks easy and good. I actually thought the stormtroopers were the hardest to paint. This way will make them the easiest! I really appreciate the video, cheers 🍻
the key to painting white is dry brushing it on. citadel has dry paints that can be your base and vallejo has a matt white that can be dry brushed too. i use brown sand though on my troopers that is watered down. dab that around and see where it needs some weathering. you can always go back and dry brush some white in a spot if you need to fix it.
I've just finished painting my first squad of these from the core box, mostly a similar technique but you have few nice short cuts. I went straight in with full fat apothecary on corax white so ended up being a bit darker. It was the time it took to finish mine which made it feel like really hard work. Anyway great tutorial, thanks for posting :)
Thanks for watching! My first batch of Phase I clones were painted with Corax and (almost) out the pot Apothecary White. They required a good 45 minutes of layering per model to look even vaguely white again. I switched to Colour Forge Matt White and some thinned Apothecary White and they looked infinitely better. More importantly it took a third of the time. 🤣
not gonna lie I've been wanting to get into miniature wargames (Armada and WH40K in particular). I decided I wanted a custom space marine company painted in the fashion of Stormtroopers, so this video is going to come in handy when I finally get my hands on some of them. :D
only just found this by accident coming from Duncan's painting channel but this is how I've been doing my storm troopers since I started only I do a 3:1 mix of medium to apothecary white and have to drybrush with a gloss white at the end, black is the same though.
This is great stuff. I was using the alchemist contrast stuff without the medium. I guess that is why he turned out so grey. What does the contrast media do?
@briankelley1652 The medium is basically contrast paint without the colour pigment in it. It dilutes the paint you mix it with, meaning the paint still acts like contrast paint, just 'watered down' for lack of better words. If you mix contrast paint with water, it loses the contrast effect and instead will just pool like a normal paint. Mixing it with colourless medium stops that. Hope it works out for you!
Yeah it's been a while, just moved country and I've got and serious backlog of commissions. Once I've got those sorted I'll be switching focus to the channel instead, so by the summer it'll be a hive of activity!
Nice video Bro! Glad that I discovered your channel! Quick question: With which exactly basing materials did you based your stormtroopers? They look stunning! Wish you are painting the Batman Gotham City Chronicles miniatures, their highly detailed! Is their any chance? Keep up the good work and I‘m looking forward to your response! Greetings from Germany!
Ah Ich bin auch in Deutschland 😄 Ich wohne in NRW. Glad it helped! The base is Vallejo Earth Texture drybrushed with Ushabti Bone. Super einfach und super schnell.
Haha das ist witzig, ich wohne auch in NRW 😂 XV-88 and Agrellan Earth from Citadel is very good combination, too! So is there any chance for the Batman miniatures? ☺️👍🏻
I have a very shaky hand and I'm having a tough time with the IA miniatures that I think are a bit bigger than these. Its my first time painting minis so I'm trying out stuff. But this method seems to be the one I have to go with.
A question; would you use this method for plain Phase I and/or Phase II clones as well? Aside from the blue markings on the stormtrooper’s helmet of course lol
Just discovered the channel and in love with the narrative videos, is the narrative kill team campaign still live? and will anything else narrative coming?
It will indeed! Just made the next episode of the Age of Sigmar narrative campaign, moving to the Ironjawz and Stormcast side. As for Kill Team, the new edition of Kill Team doesn't lend itself too well to the narrative side of life so I'm trying to work out a good way to continue the story. Be a shame not to find out what happens to the platoon!
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 off to check out the AoS vids now! hope it goes well for the gents, but not too well as im thinking about a guard kill team and the grey pile is yet to be shifted haha
So you mention in the video that you use the Colour Forge Matt White spray and specifically say for the UK and EU. Do you know if they deliver across the pond?
@@jediastartes6595 Thanks very much, and thanks for watching! Let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to see and I'll try and get a video done.
Of all of the stormtrooper painting videos, I'm definitely preferring this finish. They look whiter which is what I'm after. Thank you

Pleased to hear it helped! 😀
Nicely done. Will use this for any future Stormtroopers.👍👍
I can't wait to try this out. Your stormtroopers are the cleanest I've personally seen.
It's a very easy scheme, comes out lovely for the time spent on them!
@Critical Hit Wargaming it looks easy and good. I actually thought the stormtroopers were the hardest to paint. This way will make them the easiest! I really appreciate the video, cheers 🍻
Would love a video form the rebels as well. This Stormtrooper recipe was gold!
I've got some Veterans to paint so I'll sort something out!

Great video. I just finished up 21 stormtroopers, using this guide. Thanks a lot
Awesome! How did they turn out? Are you happy with them?
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 yes they turned out great. A nice tabletop ready finish. Did the base in a Endor theme, so they can crush som rebel scum
This gives me hope!
Spot on job! Hopefully many more people will find your videos :)
this was incredibly helpful and super easy to do. Thank you so much for this.
Excellent!!
Thanks for this, it seems an incredibly elegant way to pull off an otherwise tricky paint job. Can’t wait to try this out!
The vid i needed 😅
just brilliant thank you :)

Who makes these 3D models? They're spectacular. Great tutorial!
There are a vast amount of them, some of them are absolutely stunning. Message me on instragram.

Great clip... right now In painting my stormtroopers (Imperial Assault version).. I hope this technique will work with IA as well.
It sure will!
Amazing

3D prints at exactly the same scale, designed for Legion. 😊

It works! Just remember if you make a mistake with the black in the armour joints, just correct the white with Corax White and you're good to go.
Place your elbow on the surface of your desk/table while painting to greatly reduce shaking hands.

Yup! Look through my videos on the channel, there is a Phase II 501st Clone speed painting tutorial 😀
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 I actually just watched it, it was just what I was looking for, thanks very much!
@@ashecrimson2812 Glad to hear it! I've got about 24 Phase IIs painted up in that scheme now. It's decent.
Is it me or this model is kinda different from the stormtrooper expansion pack? I mean, how he is standing. Is it an alternate assembling?
It is - it's a 3D print, to exactly Legion scale.

Would gloss varnish be good for these?
Yeah, sort of - just make sure you varnish it and then base it. It doesn't look as natural as you think, unfortunately.
