    Bringing back a sliding keyboard in a device like this, tickles the part of my brain where I was playing legend of Zelda on an old Samsung slider phone circa 2006

      @@CLOYO if it wasn’t for all of these new little handhelds coming out of china, I’d absolutely pick up an old Experia play. I’m kinda looking at getting an r35s thanks to taki. I’ve got the steam deck, but I really want to beat donkey Kong 64 some day, and being able to slide that out of my pocket would be pretty neat

      @@CLOYO I really wish they would make an updated version of the Xperia play. I know they technically did but it was just a normal smartphone with no controller. The original was such a great concept that a lot of people missed out on. With the advancement in tech and emulators, a phone like that would be so great to have now.

    This is now out under the guise of Antec core HS, it's exactly the same console but branded as Antec not ayaneo
    It's £550 for the console with 32gb of Ram 2tb of storage and it's bundled with a dock,case, screen protector and joystick cap set. I've just ordered one that's why I came here to look at the review

    The problem with these handhelds is that the company just keep releasing them until they get a 'hit' like the Steam Deck or ROG. But the problem is, they will never get that because most people dont trust a company that doesnt stick by a console. Even Valve knew this, by confirming they wont be releasing a Steam Deck 2 for at least a year or so, because you need to get peoples trust that you can actually support a product before moving onto the next.

    • @Jhud69
      @Jhud69 9 місяців тому

      When it comes to niche PC companies I kind of trust Ayn more than Ayaneo. They have a legit site, not THAT many models (their lineup is reasonable with budget, mid tier and pro versions) and they adjust the price of their handhelds, I heard some models come with issues but they seem to be good with customer service. AND their prices aren’t as outrageous as Ayaneo’s as well. They had a blunder with shipping times sure but well I had to wait for my first Steam Deck for over a year too. And I just find it weird that Ayaneo’s main website doesn’t work for everyone - I can access only their shopify that has only a handful of their products with massive discounts but apparently it’s legit?

    • @ejay3k
      @ejay3k 9 місяців тому +19

      Pretty sure it's not about getting a hit but instead something something about them needing the sell the next console to build the current one, always playing catchup.

    • @Sarge92
      @Sarge92 9 місяців тому +21

      @@ejay3k in my opinion its something different and something ive been complaining about
      its when companies listen to the consumer TOO MUCH
      its good to get feedback and to use that going forward but sometimes what the consumer wants is not what they want because when they say what they want they forget what it costs
      look at what most consumers would say is the perfect handheld
      7 inch must be oled must be 1080p(4k better) must do 120fps must have the fastest cpu and gpu combo you can cram in it must have external gpu support and 2tb of storage
      then such a device exists and the consumer goes
      woah im not paying 1200 dollars for that!!!!
      thats the one thing i think valve did well is they built the steamdeck much in the same way you build a console they set a rough price point then built its features around what they could and could not have and compromised where they could dumping features
      one big one is everyone ragging on the 720p screen which is funny because people where jizzing there pants over the switch saying how amazing it looked how beutifull breath of the wild was how jaw dropping the image looked how breathtaking the image was... despite having the same resolution and framerate ( if not lower framerate) than a steamdeck
      but brininging it back
      steam and asus dont feel the need to keep re inovating the console over and over but aya feels the need to keep making the next best system and chasing the unreasonable demands of there fans they dont want to make a system and let it have its run they want to chase the bleeding edge

      It's just too expensive. A handheld with an iGPU really just needs to cost half of this. This class of device is new so I get the price premium. When I saw a steamdeck on sale refurbished for under $300 I felt like the value was within reason.

    • @TigerTT

      The 64GB+4TB version seems damn nice though, especially for that size compared to the Steam Deck. Though that maxed out version costs $1300, that's enough to buy a really beefy 4K GPU.

      With the Win4 it's almost the same. I think the real difference lies in the angle of the sides, you hold your hands differently. The case should have been a little bit more gamepad like.

  • @Swenglish
    @Swenglish 9 місяців тому +17

    The ability to angle the screen is definitely a huge plus (the main reason the GPD Win 3 just isn't comfortable for me to use is that the controller and screen are at the same angle), but I'm still glad I chose the GPD Win Mini. It's a bit large, but I can fit it in the inner pocket of three different jackets *with* the grips on, so it's pocketable enough for me.

    • @massivepileup
      @massivepileup 9 місяців тому

      I think it's the clamshell design that makes the Mini more pocketable, with these slide handhelds the screen and sticks are still exposed and I always want to keep them in a protective case which of course makes them a lot bigger.

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish 9 місяців тому +1

      @@massivepileup I wouldn't put the Win Mini in a *pants* pocket (especially with grips attached), only an inner jacket pocket or hoodie pouch, but yeah, and in addition to protecting the screen and encasing the sticks, the clamshell design allows for the width of the screen to be just about the width of the whole device. With a slide-out design (much like with a PSP/GBA style design), screen size has to be sacrificed to make room for controls unless the controls are hidden under the sliding part...which seems pretty pointless, since you might as well just put a hinge on it at that point and have built-in screen protection and fully adjustable viewing angle.
      Having owned the Win 3 for a while, I have concluded that the slide-out design is completely pointless. I don't know why they didn't just put a hinge on it. I'm glad they went back to the hinge for the Win Mini, because it's better in every single way I can think of. And I don't know why Ayaneo is jumping on the slide wagon. I respect that they added an angle adjustment feature, but they might as well have just made it clamshell. I don't know what the reasoning is behind going with an obviously inferior design. It's just exposing the screen and sticks for no reason at this point.
      I understand putting controls on the sides when there isn't a keyboard, especially with cheaper, lightweight devices. Once you add the keyboard and the weight of PC guts, you might as well go clamshell. It's just better for so many reasons.

    • @My_In-Ear_Monitor_Fetish
      @My_In-Ear_Monitor_Fetish 9 місяців тому

      @massivepileup i can pocket it in my big jeans but the clamshell is definitely more pocketable imma get a clamshell instead with a second screen it looks like a DS

  • @Schatten.mensch
    @Schatten.mensch 9 місяців тому +9

    The control issues are certainly strange - it can't be the game getting confused because there is a controller and a keyboard at the same time because I am not in the habit of unplugging the keyboard of my desktop whenever I want to use a controller. This is something they messed up specifically with this device, not a standard game or windows issue.

    • @primalconvoy
      @primalconvoy 9 місяців тому +1

      On Android, some older games/code/game engines have a bug where any attached keyboards are automatically assigned as "Controller 1" and the main controller as "Controller 2". This then means said games won't support the second controller and thus any controllers.

    • @2010ngojo

      Not to mention other devices have been okay with kind of form factor (physical keyboard and controller). Gpd has a physical switch to change between the two control methods and even have a track pad that works in either mode. Aya just needs to step up their game.

  • @seemoremacstuff
    @seemoremacstuff 9 місяців тому +10

    I want more companies to go for the clamshell style. I’m still using my GPD Win 2 and I love its small size. However it’s getting a bit long in the tooth. I’m interested in the Win Mini however since I have a Steam Deck I can’t really justify the price. I wish GPD would make a cheaper lower spec version of the Mini with a cpu like an AMD Athlon or even an Intel N100. Both of those cpus would destroy the old M3 in the GPD Win 2.

    I really do not understand the "these companies release 5 handhelds per microsecond" complaints on every single review of anything but the Deck/Ally/Legion Go. Ayaneo, GPD, OneXPlayer/OneNetbook, etc. have been at this for YEARS before more western-reachable tech entered the market. It is obvious Valve wants to keep the Deck and the OLEDeck alive as much as possible, and that is a valid business strategy; these other companies do not follow that methodology and yet it still works for them. Is a matter of launching as many diverse devices as possible until that lineup is pretty much set and always appeal to the same market demographic, which in this case is mostly Asia. I am not going to say that the Deck is bad by any means of the imagination, in fact both are excellent, but those are products for another demographic and, yes, these 5 handhelds per microsecond companies actually sell these devices. Not to mention that Valve, Asus and Lenovo do a terrible job at reaching less populated markets.
    Must admit that getting the Slide before the Flip KB or Flip DS is a bit of a shame but it looks like quite a nice device nonetheless. Keep it up Russ, thanks for the review!

    People don't seem to understand how lucky we are to have all these options or how companies like GPD or AYANEO may not be perfect, but they've helped shape this space and offer people options for years now... also the great news is if you aren't interested in something you don't have to buy it. I'm glad they're making more of these slide style handhelds but they need to nail the controls. The GPDWIN4 is still much better to use thanks to the optical track pad / button it has which makes it easy to use mouse based games on it. And really, trackpads would be better. The sooner everyone just straight copies the Steam Deck controls, the better.

    I don’t understand the devices with the blackberry style keyboard. What is the point of a keyboard that is too small to use for office tasks or gaming? Why not save on cost, bulk and complexity and just utilize a digital keyboard for the few times you actually need one on a handheld?

    GPD Win 4 Owner here - missing the mouse nub is a massive oversight and definitely renders the keyboard kinda useless as you explained.
    I already mishit the top row of buttons with the screen slid up, adding more up there seems like a bad move.
    Finally I think they whiffed on the screen implementation. Not being flush seems like the wrong choice, and it slides too high up. I get it allows for the angling but that's probably why it felt so flimsy. The gpd win 4 screen only extends roughly 40% above the device, but this is closer to 66-70%. I think they should keep iterating but I wouldn't trade in my win 4 for this. Great video!

    Turn off the keyboard? If it's the fault of the game not knowing what to do with Keyboard and controller attached, then that game would not work correctly with gamepad controls on any PC. How many people do you know who unplug their keyboard when playing?

    • @RetroGameCorps
      @RetroGameCorps  9 місяців тому +1

      It’s that the keyboard is sending some sort of active signal at all times, and so games that allow you to switch between keyboard and controller don’t know what to do when getting both signals at once. It’s the equivalent of tapping on the keyboard while also playing with the controller, some games will continue to work, while others don’t know what to do.

    • @neumi569
      @neumi569 9 місяців тому

      @@RetroGameCorps Just installed the GOG version of Witcher 3 GOTY 4.04 on the Slide and had no problem whatsoever. The game would change input on the fly like others do. Changing the volume made the game think I was using the keyboard (that's quite normal), also pressing the Ayaneo button would switch to keyboard input. But moving the left stick would switch back to gamepad controls.
      I had a few other games that would see the stick movement as both gamepad and mouse input which resulted in navigating the menus being a pita.
      What helped was to deactivate gamepad mode in the options.

      And it being a handheld, you *will* drop it. Not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when".
      I think that alone means people should carefully consider whether it's worth it to them. Everyone wants to be careful with their expensive hardware, but let me tell you, just days after getting my N3DS and heading back to college, my roommate managed to trip over my charging cable and fling my N3DS across the room (we had only one outlet in the room and it was in the walkway, because cheap-ass dorms).
      It's a surprisingly durable system and thankfully didn't go tumbling around, so no damage to it whatsoever, but imagine if that happened with your giant clunky slide-out handheld device? While the screen's out, this thing would absolutely split apart or at least the contacts/cords inside the rails would get damaged. Even the old-school DS Lite eventually broke the plastic hinges just from opening and closing it a ton of times (mine lasted all the way from early high school until a couple years ago, probably about a decade or more, but even I had it happen to me eventually while replaying some Pokemon games).
      Wear happens, too, and the more moving parts, the more complex the machinery, the more susceptible it becomes to issues.
      I *love* the idea of a slide-out keyboard on a device like this, it has its perks... but for $1k? This thing is absolutely gonna break, I hope whoever buys it is prepared to pay out the ass for repairs or a replacement. You have to have serious cash to burn to get something like this, it's not even just about getting one, it's about the cost of replacement, repairs or alternative models down the line if this one starts to have problems and you can't justify using it anymore.

    • @amadeoel3781

      They cannot, the technology is at a dead corner density wise. However, solid state batteries should be released within the next 1-5 years. Depending on how many stable layers they can implement, the energy density will be between 1.5-5x times the density we have now, with the upside of it not degrading due those batteries not using a solvent for the lithium crystals.
      In other words, within 5 years we should see electronics doubling the use time. If not better (they could do better but it would not be economical)

      High-end handhelds are just very niche products. I love the idea of the "perfect" handheld, but unless you're rich and have a shitload of money to blow, you aren't going to be getting handhelds like this but once in your lifetime. Honestly, unless you *really* need the portability, most people are better off just getting a regular PC and finding a streaming option. Way more affordable and similar results.

You liked 30 degrees angle on AYANEO but before you said it was iffy for reliability and you preferred manual controllable GPD Win4 slide up.... ETC . for me - you've just taken a free sample with conditions never spoil key spots compare with competitions with only slight criticism to not key components where overall critics is acceptable for AYANEO. The keyboard is useful only for entering passwords and username? Is this really true? That's quite a major failure of the whole keyboard feature and a ridiculously heavy and pricey inclusion to save a few seconds of convenience. Surely it must be usable for older style dos games and mid 2000's strategy and RPGs that are designed for keyboard use.
