In 16:9 you can just add overlay, also bezels are just unnoticeable at night. But in a 4:3 screen the widescreen games just doesn't feel a good gaming experience
The OLED really is the main selling point for me. I do have a steam deck but its more of a "in bed" type of deal. I dont take it around with me almost at all, which I thought I would be doing a lot when I first got it. I am looking at an RP4+ but Im probably gonna wait for the RP5s reviews to drop, I really want smooth PS2 and GC performance and I am sure that this chipset will deliver this comfortably. The screen is just a little too small for me personally, while the 5.5" RP5 seems perfect for my usecase and needs in terms of formfactor.
The website says the button layout is interchangeable. edit: Nevermind, they appear to all fit in one place and they must be referring to mixing colors.
I bought one on impulse yesterday, hoping for pretty much what you described here. Very much looking forward to trying this one out. My go-to devices rn are the Odin 2 and RG35XXSP, and I think that this one will compliment them nicely as a more portable solution for higher-end 4:3 games without big ol' bars on the sides. That aside, this video was quality as ever: entertaining and informative. Sorry you're dealing with the crap from Nintendo, they're not making many friends lately. Best of luck navigating that safely!
I do wish it had a few minor changes though. I don't care about the screen size (it's bigger than a Nomad), but the full glass front is unattractive. The classic bezel, especially for a 4:3 device, is much more appealing. I also do NOT understand how we still can't get Z & C on these devices. I mean UNIQUE Z & C. Not just bumpers duplicated or moved to the face. You can't properly play 'everything' all-in-one style without them. N64 being a prime example.
Fug yeah! Did I come here to comment on the review? No, I came here to praise the shirt and band. One of my faves. RIP Terry Hall. But the review was great as always.
I may be wrong, but Nintendo can scower through anything Russ has done these last few years or since making videos on UA-cam. The method that they have given him the strikes has been like flexing and showing their power. They do it to the tiniest footage of a Nintendo game on a non-Nintendo handheld and that's what they decide to chip away at him with. It's like taking down Goliath with a few rocks from a sling. Incredibly shocking and undoubtedly difficult to experience such a small hit that wounds so deep. It gets under your skin. They showed that if they can hit you with a 5 second strike they could definitely hit you with gameplay footage that is closer to 30 seconds.. or ANYTHING for that matter. No questions asked. Nintendo says Ninten-do, we should say Ninten- DON'T! RUSS is a good guy man. You can tell in 1,000 ways.
Part of me is hype to see what the 5 is like if the mini is this promising… but on the other hand I've had my RP4pro since launch and after months of tinkering, it’s finally set up just the way I want it and I don’t want to have to do it all over again so soon. But it’s cool to see how much performance improves with these devices each year. Maybe in another year or two I'll be ready to upgrade, lol. Great review as always! Love your channel; it’s how I got introduced into the world of emulation handhelds. :D
The Retroid Pocket Mini is not for everyone. It's made for people who want a pocketable high-end device to play retro games with overlays, filters and shaders etc... So stop complaining about the screen size in comments when you know that RP4 Pro and RP5 do exist.

Does this connect to a big TV via dock? And if so does it cover the whole TV screen or just stay at 4:3 if you know what I mean? Lol
Yes it connects via dock, I'll test it in my final review later this week.
@@RetroGameCorps Thank You
Will you also see if you need to keep remapping the buttons every time you dock and undock the device that would be such a deal breaker for me lol
I appreciate that the d-pad and left analog stick are in the correct positions.
Now that we're all shifting to Sega platforms as opposed to Suetendo, give this a Saturn D-Pad and six face buttons.
Except it will then also be very good for the N64 (A, B, and the 4 C buttons)
Loving the look of the new grips on the back. Glad I held off on the 4P for the 5.
It really is funny all these people are saying the screen is too small when 4:3 content is 3.8 inches on the rp3/4 devices
So you mean 4:3 content is bigger while you can also play 16:9 content? This isn't the win you think it is.
@@JubalVoid He's also missing the fact that 16:9 mods for tons of dreamcast, ps2, gamecube games exist and work really well. So you can get a full widescreen experience with some of these games.
that’s a good point
You can't deny the RP Mini would be a home-run hit with a 4" screen
In 16:9 you can just add overlay, also bezels are just unnoticeable at night. But in a 4:3 screen the widescreen games just doesn't feel a good gaming experience
This initial impressions video is 10x deeper than most full reviews. Mega stuff from Russ.
Hey man, another great video and I’m sorry Nintendo is being so shitty.
Side note, glad to hear how a fellow veteran is thriving in retirement.
Yeah BABY! This is what we've been waitin for! already ordered the larger RP5. My precious!
Glad to see you upload again... Just wad able to watch this been busy... Have alot of your vids on my backlog😂
i just wish the abxy buttons could be physically installed like:
Y
B X
A
which is the layout that most closely resembles the gamecube.
The website says the button layout is interchangeable.
edit: Nevermind, they appear to all fit in one place and they must be referring to mixing colors.
Thanks for the review. Since it shares the same internal as the RP5, I am REALLY excited for the RP5 that I ordered!
BABE WAKE UP, NEW RETRO GAME CORPS VIDEO JUST DROPPED
I bought one on impulse yesterday, hoping for pretty much what you described here. Very much looking forward to trying this one out. My go-to devices rn are the Odin 2 and RG35XXSP, and I think that this one will compliment them nicely as a more portable solution for higher-end 4:3 games without big ol' bars on the sides. That aside, this video was quality as ever: entertaining and informative. Sorry you're dealing with the crap from Nintendo, they're not making many friends lately. Best of luck navigating that safely!
Nice experiment but the screen is way too small to enjoy PS2, GC, Wii or DC games on it.
BEETLE SATURN CONFIRMED!!!!
Thank you, that was the one and only thing I needed to hear about this device.
I'll be buying one today.
The specials t shirt is great! Band from my home town 🎉
Fug yeah! Did I come here to comment on the review? No, I came here to praise the shirt and band. One of my faves. RIP Terry Hall. But the review was great as always.
Oooo I love the studio lighting changes. Hadn't noticed until this video.
I thought 3.7" is a bit disappointing but when you actually compared it to 4" it was even more disappointing.
Size don't matter man. It's average. Average.
I love these New Retroid Line-Up! Planning on getting a Pocket MiNi another time.
Nintendo is watching closely like, "Nothing so far.. wait! Are those Mario pillows? GOTTEM"
I've watched the rest, now it's time to watch the best. Thank you!
This looks awesome but going through the vid i can say that im happy with the 4Pro i like the form factor more and it handles everything i play
Am I going to buy this? No chance. Am I going to grab a snack and a drink and watch the whole impressions video regardless? Definitely.
I'm excited to see your review of the R.Pocket5!
The Retroid Pocket Mini is not for everyone. It's made for people who want a pocketable high-end device to play retro games with overlays, filters and shaders etc... So stop complaining about the screen size in comments when you know that RP4 Pro and RP5 do exist.
I love the 40min first impressions long video! Keep it russ
12:29 You vs the guy she tells you not to worry about...
I have been saving this video all week, thank you for this. My purchase feels justified now, I wasn't totally sure if I wanted this or not but yeah man. I wanna do it! (And I did!) 😂
better blur those nintendo pillows
this device is endgame for so many people that have waited until this gap on the market is finally fulfilled by someone serious about it. I'm so happy it finally exists
Any chance at Nintendo switch emulation???
The music of the intro somehow refreshes my mind, it's like it have a special energy.
I find it harder to buy retro hand helds after buying odon2. But I need to add to the collection 😂
I have a Steam Deck, Odin2 base amd MM+.
Pretty much enough!
Bro no!!! Please no!!! Save some money. Make a good vacation or visit a good restaurant. Maybe invite your girlfriend or mother? Buy some good clothes what ever. I have the Odin 2 pro too and a RG40XXH for games till PS1 and yes ... some of the new devices are crazy cool but why? You never touch them. You want to impress the chicks? 😂 Gift them away? Hmmm. Im now thinking about to sell them. I mean ... do what ever you want but if you think about you will see ... We are not big youtubers with a lot of money. Most of us are not. You can invest the money for better things. The Odin 2 Pro is Pro Level You dont need more! Just my two cents.
NO. You DON'T need to add to the collection.
Just enjoy what you're using right now dawg 😭 I swear these videos can instill consumer FOMO but it is POINTLESS to have more than like, 2 handhelds.
Nah the screen it too small.
Why...if I had Odin 2 wouldn't be buying anything more, I've only watched this things to get te Best device for me, bought rp4p and I'm more than happy not planning on other devices until the Odin 2 pro gets under 200 USD
I've been looking forward to your RP Mini review all month. Can't wait to see the full thing in a few days!
I'm decently sensitive to input lag, which really holds back Android handhelds for me. I would love it if you put the Linux support through its paces and could say if the input latency is better there than on Android.
EFF NINTENDO
Yup
Great review, waiting patiently for my RP5 GC.
Russ, I think you and I both will gain a lot from a divorce from Nintendo, between you and palworld, it feels like Nintendo is attacking me personally haha.
This is the handheld I've been waiting for. But will wait for the 5 review just for the bigger screen for psp. I am impressed.
Wish they could've sourced the RG405M screen.
resolution is too low on that screen
That screen is 480p lol, it's certified e-waste
I'm super impressed that you've only had the device for a few hours and you already have your emulators and front end set up. When I set up rp2s it took all weekend, and gave me 4 migraines, and it still doesn't run well.
