    Wait a minute.
    The VESA mount is SOLD BY Apple, has Apple logos plastered all over it's documentation, and it's "not an Apple product", being made by a third party.
    But a refurbished screen using original Apple parts is a "counterfeit" for being repaired by a third party?
    By Apple's logic, shouldn't these VESA mounts be considered "counterfeit"? Specially considering how low-quality they are!

    "Can't provide waranty because we don't manufacture it" is illegal under EU law. You sold the customer the good, it's up to you to arrange for waranty, if it requires you to send it to the actual manufacturer, you do that not the consumer.

    • @kamX-rz4uy
      @kamX-rz4uy 5 років тому +19

      In the US the warranty must list the terms and who to contact. Apple failed because they gave an Apple support number in the documentation but then denied giving support saying it was made by a third party. It is okay to have another company provide support but Apple must give out that information. Also, if that company fails to provide warranty support then Apple is still on the hook to do so, or replace the product or provide a refund. There is a concept in US law that a person does not have to track down a potentially endless number of people or companies when wronged or something is due to them. He bought an Apple product directly from Apple (no wiggle room there) so Apple is legally obligated to ensure warranty coverage occurs. Ultimately Apple provided coverage but not everyone lives near an Apple store or has a UA-cam channel with lots of subscribers.

    This is utter bullshit from start to finish. The cost of the adapter, ridiculous. You could by a VESA mount adapter that would hold a 50" TV on the wall for that price.
    The selling of something on the store as an Apple product but then saying it's not warrantied or Apples concern.
    The quality (or utter lack of). Surely the whole thing should be steel, not aluminium.
    Then some genius butchers the crap out of everything and it's just handed back to the customer. Surely the correct thing to do would be honest to the customer and order a replacement the moment it was scratched? Never mind handing it back after it was probably used as a crow bar to open some other customers glued together CrApple product!
    And on top of all that, to not even be able to properly discuss a problem over the phone after purchasing a premium product?! All for a mere $5000. I bet he felt like a well respected well looked after customer after all that.

    I just find it so ironic that the Apple Store that Snazzy went to only had 1 (yes 1) Apple Genius, & he was (IS) the "Head Genius", to boot; that was qualified to work on the iMac Pro (late 2017 model). Doesn't anyone else find this ironic, seriously. One would think that EVERY & ALL Apple Geniuses (honestly, so hate whomever it was that came up with that PR naming scheme, cuz I'd throw a dictionary at them along with the Apple Service Manuals for repairing Apple Products) working at an Apple Store ARE "Certified & Trained properly" to service ALL Apple Products, AND any 3rd part Apple Products that are Certified Apple & sold at/through/by Apple; especially when they have Legit Apple Documentation included within packaging! OMG, & ppl have a hard time believing the stories I tell about fixing/repairing Apple Products(& other Brands as well, as, stupidity isn't limited to just Apple's Company😏); like I'm making them up. Yeah they may sound unbelievable......."but it's all true baby, it's all true".

    I wouldn't recommend using stainless steel screws unless you apply some anti-seize to them. Stainless is a extremely abrasive metal and will easily gall in aluminum without lubrication. Just get some good grade 8 oxide coated socket head cap screws and call it a day. If you buy 100 of them at Fastenal it might cost you $3 or $4. Personally if I owned one of those I would drill and tap the holes to the next larger size. They seem WAY to small for the job their doing.

I have owned 2 Apple products in my lifetime, an iPod and iHome. I don't think I would take a Apple computer if someone gave it to me for free. Though they might make good targets for my 338 Lapua or 50 BMG. I bet some armor piercing incendiary rounds would look good going through one. :-)

      Galling usually only occurs between similair metals though.
      Even using 304 on 316 reduces the chance of galling a lot.
      Using five phosphate ChrMo m5 cap head bolts would make for an extremely secure connection.
      I concur with using anti seize to mitigate any galvanic corrosion issues.

If you don't do up bolts like torquing down an engine head, the last one you tighten can have a serious load on it just from miss alignment. This is why it is good to use two studs to do the positioning and bolts to press the surfaces together.

    I'm willing to bet several of the electronics I bought cheap on eBay or Aliexpress still have mostly stainless steel screws, specially on structural support parts. In fact, I don't even have to bet... I've opened up some stuff already. Can't remember seeing anything like those.
    I remember seeing some very crappy materials being used over a decade ago on poorly faked stuff... like, not white brand, not chinese brands, but really fake fake stuff made to look like the original but using crap parts and materials. At least on those cases there was a proper reason to do it, so it cost way less to manufacture and they could sell it at a fraction of the price of the original.
    Will Apple stores start selling cases and pouches made out internally with recycled cardboard, toothpaste containers and milk cartons or something?

If that was in Europe and they put Zinc screws in a VESA mount, that could be a major safety risk (imagine if for example, he had a visiting Family member with a small baby crawling around underneath the mount. Apple wouldn't have a leg to stand on and the HSE would be able to take action on safety grounds and force them to make it safe and I would make damn sure that Apple suffered if it were me.
    It's up to each and every one of us to do all we can to make companies like this accountable. If you're Public Health and Safety have any teeth, then you all need to help them to start biting Apple and getting unsafe products made safe, period.

    In Germany there is a dealers warranty. The dealer has to replace or refund your broken goods within 6 months (up to two years if you can prove that the damage is due to a flaw in the product). The dealer then has to handle the manufacturers warranty. Makes it so much easier for the customer. You just go where you bought it.

  • @MetroidChild
    @MetroidChild 6 років тому +2

    I did some calculations and a zinc M2.5 should be tightened to around 10Ncm to reach tensile yield, or in other words these screws don't like to be screwed on hard. Even normal low carbon steel would have something like 25Ncm, so the variations in production would lower the risk of a binding screw snapping just from the headroom.
    If I designed this thing I would use a horizontal bar (or just a pin on each side) as the holder so the stand don't slip out, then only have one or two screws to _hold_ the bar or pins in place, that way you don't put any sort of stress on the screws and you can use shitty screws if you're cheapasses like apple.
    Another alternative would be to use higher quality screws and a better fastening design, the screws are 6.5mm long and only like 2mm actually grips threads (so you have 4.5mm that's wasted), the original stand probably only has 2mm of free space on the screws due to the design of the OG stand. I would not be surprised if that actually helps the structural integrity of the fastening system.

    Brass screws would be better for aluminum mounting but the point stands that Apple is not only selling a defective product but charging a premium for it, claiming that the product they sell as if it were first party is in fact not, and subsequently damaging a highly expensive machine in a botched repair job. I work on jet engines and we make sure that the fasteners we use for load bearing components are made of an appropriate material of high quality. Aside from special fasteners that must be made of materials like silver, none of the fasteners used on a GE F-110 engine (a $3,000,000 engine) are made of low quality or unfit metal. They're titanium, high tensile strength stainless steel, or aircraft grade aluminum. Apple likes their space age design aesthetic but they should take cues from the aerospace industry and only use quality materials. But this is Apple we're talking about, so they'll be "courageous" and just keep making their overpriced products out of low quality shit.

    What slays me is the whole "qualified to repair" deal. How stupid do you have to be to not be able to use google? Do they pay these "Geniuses" in actual apples? There is no excuse today for that degree of incompetence, both in the choice of materials on Apple's part AND the morons that "performed the repair". Hell, there are dozens of ways they could have got that screw out without messing up the product that badly.
    If you are going to require "certification" for your "techs" to fix things then you need to screen your "geniuses" better and pay them more. If someone that worked for me screwed up a clients system that badly they would be fired on the spot with no severance pay because it would go to buying the client a new system. I have never hired anyone that stupid though so it has never been a problem. The truly scary part is, if this is how badly they messed up a basic mechanical issue how badly do they screw up actual hardware repair?
    I am going to hazard a guess here that Apple required them to repair things in an "apple approved" way. As soon as they have to think outside the box, they get scared apple won't approve? How anal retentive do you have to be to require your techs to follow "protocol" even over client satisfaction and quality work?
    Yeah, Apple can suck my.......

    This kind of thing doesn't only happen in the tech sector. I had a customer come in to my workplace the other day wanting his £11,000 road bike serviced. His rear brake had seized up and was rubbing on his wheel. When I stripped it out all the screws and mounts were rusty! £11,000 and you still don't get stainless steel or titanium bolts! Needless to say I replaced them with the appropriate stainless bolts, and we now have a new happy customer for the price of a handful of bolts!

    Siri just told me Apple Inc. has 246 Billion cash in mostly all off shore accounts. To me 246 Billion is a quarter Trillion. Actually I i'm not even sure how many zeros are in a Trillion, I think 12 zeros.
    Inorder to have that much cash, obviously pot metal screws vs grade 8 or SS mounting screws are 100% a necessity along with every other short cut you can do to save money on all Apple products......
    I use an iPhone 5s still n my late wife had a iPhone 6s. I could not help notice the off button is on the top of my 5s and my wife's iPhone 6 had it on the same side about the same hight up from the bottom of the phone as mine. To me this is because the iPhone 6 is probably using the same circuit board/componants as my older/cheaper technology iPhone 5s inorder to save BIG BUCKS.
    I have not up graded my 5s partialy because I learned how much cash Apple has. If ANY company has 1/4 Trillion dollars, there products need to be Almost Perfect at the least and it sure is NOT. I have re named my smart phone to a Not To Smart Phone just because a name should always be Short and Descriptive and Not To Smart Phone better describs my 5s than smart phoe does. The main reason I have not up graded to a iPhone 8 is because ANY product that costs $800 is clasified as a durable good. Since it obviously is not vary durable since it only lasting two years or so years before it starts havoing a mind of it's own.
    Since VW was caught placing cheating code in their products computer brain inorder to make more sales/money. I suspect many corporations that ahve their own programers probably are doing the same, especialy if they have a quarter of a Trillion dollars in profets in the bank......

      using steel screws when screwing into aluminum is not a good idea, as the two metals interact, seizing up the screw over time. Yes, there are ways to combine aluminum threads with steel screws (passivizing the steel, grease, locktide, ...), but using any screw can cause issues. (which is why apple should supply the dam screws with adapter)

      sargowie Steel screws are used the same way in aluminum scope mounts.And screwing/unscrewing is rarely a problem there even when you have to tight them so hard to resist gun recoil and stuff like that.And here the guy breaks 3 or 4mm screw with a screwdriver assuming you can't even tight good such screw with a screwdriver.
      Raymond Leggs Steel screws can hold like 20kg+ per piece with ease.Why using something else when steel is cheap,reliable and gets the job done.Only a "genius" can aswer to that question.

    One of the things I do like about Apple Stores is the sessions where they teach you how to use the devices and all kinds of interesting stuff. I have been to many of them and so I hear a lot of people in the store talking to their friends, other people in the store, or the staff. I just think it is really funny some of the stuff I hear in those stores.

    Some thoughts. The Apple store 'Genius' was some university grad who spend more time on studying leftist agenda then tech stuff. Have some pity. They got student loan to pay. Not.
    Apple or Foxcon do not make all the peripherals. They outsource it to 'someone else', and slap an Apple logo. I've used Chinese made screws. They are decent. The parts maker must have got the cheapest of the cheapest supplier to max the profit. Or there was a con job. The supplier gave good screws, then the screw Apple by giving them bad screws.
    I guess epoxied with a plywood would be a stronger mount.

    I have the the version for the VESA mount adapter for the older aluminum iMac/Thunderbolt Display which also came with a plastic card, etc., and I've removed that one and off dozens of times. It has never broken once. It still fits on there perfectly and can be removed easily.

  • @PabloAgrestBerge
    @PabloAgrestBerge 6 років тому +1

    I was flabbergasted too, but not just by the Applestore clumsiness. You can easily see in Snazzy's video that the screw broke after some turns, effectively loosening the grip. You can see the gap between the mount and the iMac back in the video. So, instead of a reverse drill and/or screw removal tool I would have used a simple jig made out of two fine hacksaw blades, facing each other and joined by one end. This makes for a flat «tweezer» with teeth, fine and sharp enough to grip the screw body shaft and rotate it out of the hole. You don't need a certificate Genius to perform the repair, just some lateral thinking. And yes, replacing the screws is a must.

    My dad used to work on fixing computers for Fry's Electronics, so I asked my dad about why he thinks why Apple would want their products that end up at the recycle center to be pulverized instead of just fixed. I don't know where he got his information, but he is convinced that apple has a chip installed into every computer that has it's own special code or whatnot that identified that computer separately from any other like it, and that this code from this chip is what makes the "special" security of their products possible. Also, apparently also because they chose this kind of security it makes it near impossible for even Apple to get into your iPhone/Mac to retrieve information without your pass-code/password if you chose to set one.
    This sounds like a bogus reason to begin with to me even if it is true that Apple does have a "special" identification chip or whatever they might actually be calling it.

    You could extrapolate this to when Enzo was on the verge of selling Ferrari to Ford, and all he asked was if they would guarantee that they would never use Ford parts in the Ferraris: Ford said 'no', so Enzo cancelled the deal.
    Later on, Fiat came along and saved the day, and Ferrari continues to be 100% Ferrari bits & bobs.
