    My uncle used to work at a Lexus dealership from like 2009-2018 before moving to Toyota. He said the IS 250’s (Second gen) are great cars and that carbon buildup unfairly hounds its reputation. He said in all his time there, he had seen carbon buildup but NEVER to the point where it was so bad that the entire engine had to be replaced / rebuilt. Even 250k+ miled ones. He said you can drive it hard, or walnut blast it. I think the really severe carbon buildup issues for a small percentage of 250‘s kinda snowballed? 🤷🏽‍♀️

      @ChristianMastrile  3 роки тому +7

      Right on for the input! Makes me feel more at ease about the carbon buildup now. Staying on top of everything just to make sure it doesn't get to that severe point seems like the best thing to do

    I bought my 2008 is250 about 6 years ago. It has 140000 miles on it. I had no idea about the carbon build up. I wanted it because of its reliability, awd and vented cooled seats. It was a great price. Now the car has over 210000 miles on it. Never had any issues with carbon build up. Always kept up on basic maintenance. Give it the italian tune up about once a week when I enter the highway. Never had any problems. Very low cost to maintain and very fun to daily drive. I love this car. I doubt similar german brands would be this trouble free after so many years and miles. Dont let the carbon build up scare you away. I hear the complaints on the internet but talking with local is250 owners in person who have high miles on their is250, so far no ones had the issue and like me, they wernt aware it was an issue.

    I own an is250 , and I want to add a couple of things:
    The rotten egg smell is probably because of the carbon buildup , not the catalytic conv , Ive had mine checked and its completely fine , if u want to avoid having the smell enter ur car you should replace the 2 filtered vents that are in ur rear bumper .
    Most models come with electric mirrors , top left right on driver side door , the mechanism uses a stopper inside the mirror to make sure its in the right position , if u try and "close" the mirror in the opposite side the stopper breaks and ur mirror either gets lose or doesnt stop where its supposed to.
    Last thing is , if u havent changed ur gearbox oil at 60k miles , dont change it ( probably ever) or u kill ur solenoids.

      Everything you've Stated seems to be true. Although, the pat about not changing the transmission fluid seems a bit overthrown.
      I recently purchased a 09 is250 with 140k on it. Off the bat I noticed it was shifting up way to hard & Down. I had service records for everything BUT the transmission. So just to test waters, I drained abt 2.5 Qts of fluid out (What typically will come out of the pan) the fluid was so Black that it looks like engine oil thats been way overdue for a change. So I added some Max Life Valvoline ATF (2.5 quarts) Instantly I felt much Smooth, Cleaner Shifts.
      Then the hard shifts came back. So I ended up dropping the Pan & replacing Filter, gasket & Fluid. The fluid in the pan was so Black & smelt absolutely Burnt. Im sure thats the first actual service for the transmission in its entire life. Once again, The hard shifts went away. I took it on a 3k+ mile trip, & The hard shift sorta came back so i jus did a drain & fill again.
      Recently I did another Drain & fill. Every time I do a drain & fill the shifts always do fill much cleaner & smoother.
      Now I'd say what you're saying abt not changing the fluid after 60k + miles is Not True at all. Unless, the transmission is already Slipping. Because at that point you're already F*cked. But like in my case, If you still have a opportunity to Save it. Save it

    I like the is because it has a good balance of looks, feel, power, efficiency, and reliability. It might not be the most powerful or luxurious car but it’s enough for me and will probably last me for the encrypted 6-10 years. Don’t have to worry about the engine breaking or the transmission blowing up or the water leaking in.

    The carbon build up issue and the extra horsepower were the main reasons why I went with my 2012 IS 350 over the IS 250. Even with that said, IS 350 and ISF owners should still keep up with regular maintenance to keep their performance up. Great vid bro!

    I have had my IS 250 AWD for almost 3 yrs. I am the second owner and it had 102K miles when I bought it and 106K miles now. We all know that lack of driving can prove harsh on brakes, exhaust and tires (rot). In order to pass inspection, I had to replace the entire exhaust system (except the manifold) and I used OEM, but had my own mechanic do the work. It cost $3,900. Yes, $500 of that was labor and tax. The exhaust is dual and has 2 cats.
    Just one more thing to check before buying. I did have the car checked out prior and there wasn't even a hint of an exhaust problem. I think I hit a pothole or two and caused a crack/hole in the exhaust and there's where the problem began.
    I like the car but it can be expensive to fix, especially at the dealership, which I try to avoid.
    P.S. Thanks for the Lexus History link. I knew that my car was originally purchased at my local dealership and guessed it was garaged due to its condition. However, they lived on the ocean as do I. It is nice to see what they had done to it even though there is a gap, approx. 30K miles where they stopped using the dealership. They traded it in at a non-Lexus dealership which caused the car to hit the auction block, and I purchased it from the used car dealer.

    All of the issues you mentioned in the video is actually the exact reasons why I had to trade my 2IS out. Had it for 9 years and at one point I noticed my loose mirrors, next was the sticky dashboard, and then I experienced the nasty rotten egg smell (didn't bother me as much but whenever I drove passengers they always think I farted LMAO). I just bought a 3IS a month ago but parts of me still miss my 2IS. Overall great car! To anyone looking to buy a 2IS, please look out for all of these problems!!
    Some extra issues I had on my 2IS was that the button under the trunk lid had the rubber all melted off and my passenger rear door had a faulty sensor (it would always say the door open when it's clearly closed) and so whenever I drove it would constantly beep.

    • @ChristianMastrile

      Right on for the input fam! Had no idea about the rubber trunk button melting or the faulty door sensor had to have been mad annoying. Congrats on the new 3IS too! Many similarities between the 2IS and 3IS but something always keeps me going back to the 2IS

    If anyone owns a second gen is350 be aware that sludge build up is common especially if the previous owner didn’t take care of the car. In mine the previous owner rarely did oil changes and it eventually stretched the timing chain…… 6k repair to get done at the dealer not sure if other owners have had this problem but something to keep in mine

    Finding an Is350 in California is so hard man. 😔

    • @ruthnoya8424
      @ruthnoya8424 3 роки тому +3

      It's hard everywhere, but easiest in California. They only made about 2,700 per year in the USA vs 9,000 is250 per year. I'm in Oregon and searched constantly on Craigslist, autotrader and Facebook and the cleanest best price models were in California and Texas. But the thing is they generally sell within a day to a week if they're solid examples. I have screenshots from the last 2 years of all the is350s I've seen for sale. If I had cash I would've jumped on a plane and bought one in Cali or Texas.
      I ended up finally buying one last month, an all stock, adult owned 2010 is350 with exactly 100k on it for $12,500. Mostly dealer serviced, new brakes and Yokohama tires. So quick I giggle like a schoolgirl.

      What's the VIN? I'll give it a peek. Like I said, best deals are in California and Texas. I've followed pricing for two years on is350s and g37s. In Oregon i got a decent deal. Maybe 1 a month comes up for sale private party, most are too old and 130+ miles. There's a 2010 with 9k more miles than mine at a lot right now and it's $14999, spottier history.
      A 2010 at $8,500 here would have 140k miles+ and 4+ owners, and probably be clapped out. I passed on two different clean 350s in the past, a mint 06 with 80k for $9500 in December 2018 and also a very clean 08 with 70k for $10.5k last summer. Of course the owners didn't disclose the infamous oil consumption their cars were having that I wouldn't have known about if not for the Lexus.Driver website dealer service record lookup that showed they had both taken their cars in for oil consumption issues that had the oil light coming on between oil changes.

    What is the best method for carbon cleaning on an IS? Sounds like the same issue we had with Audi when I worked in Engineering trying to come up with solutions. I had the Snap On guy do a demonstration with me by spraying his special blend of cleaners through the throttle body. I took before and after photos with a borescope and there was no change at all. Audi resorted in removing the intake manifolds and actually soaking the valves (when closed of course) with either Brake Cleaner of Seafoam. I've seen a Seafoam treatment similar to Snap on and it literally caused a smoky cloud for miles out the shops exhaust hoses. Not sure what the outcome of that was but basically it boiled down to every Direct Injection Engine. The 4.2L V8 in the S4 was the worst. I've seen literally dime size holes going to the valves. Unbelievable. So remove the intake manifolds, soak the close valves based on your firing order and start scrubbing. Injectors due nothing because the combustion chamber is not before the valve any longer. The effect of good fuel treatments was great for injectors but did nothing for the valvetrain. Before I left Audi 5 years ago. They were actually adding an additional injector in the intake manifold to blast some fuel in there to aid in breaking up the carbon. That was an 80's flashback for me. After 40 years as a tech and engineering. So my question in todays new world, has anyone come up with a tried and true fix without removing the intake manifolds and spending a day scrubbing. I'm curious because because I'm currently semi-retired from Audi and looking at Asian vehicles a little closer after 30 years alone with VW/Audi. I keep on technology and found this page and thought it would be a good topic of discussion. Any IS Gurus that do decarbons here? I will probably join some groups but curious here what the latest fix is for that. Also does this engine have oil consumption? Thats a major factor. Thanks friends for any replies!!!
