You are absolutely right about this lens. I bought the kit, ignored the lens and what using some borrowed Sony much faster lenses, and then was forced to return the borrowed lenses and use this kit lens, and I could not believe the optics of it. So incredibly sharp, so detailed. I wish it was a little faster, but even at 60 mm, there is still a neat Bouleh when shooting closely at spring buds on a branch. Anyway, good video, and I agree with you entirely. I am still using it, awaiting for some other lenses that I have ordered.

Jay I have to say I bought the A7c a year ago w/o this kit lens. I have been using it with a few primes and recently bought the new 40mm, the store made me a package deal and I am so sorry I didn't listen to you back when you made this video. BTW I have the same bag lol
Hey buddy, and no need to apologize to me... lol I just figured I would help a few people when they were considering this kit lens. It really is sharp and ultra compact/ light weight for a full frame zoom lens and in my opinion worth the extra money if buying as a kit with the camera. I would not go out and but it after the fact though, with so many better options out there... That bag is awesome, so you got a good one!! All the best my friend, Jay

It's a great counter point and I highly recommend that lens for better quality, however it costs $880 US, weighs a lot more, plus is huge in size comparatively. Again, that is certainly a great option for sure, but for $300 I would also still consider getting this lens for those occasions where ultra compact and lightweight are needed. This may not apply to you, but for those that really want the most compact, lightweight, affordable, and versatile option, this kit lens is pretty awesome in my opinion.
@@Jason_Hermann as an owner of both the A7c and the Tamron 28-75 I agree with you: the Tamron lenses are too heavy in comparison with the camera. You get used to it but it’s not the ideal proportion.
Good points all! This is pretty close to the range of my RX100V, from which Sony has blocked my upgrade path ever since. And I suppose the Full Frame sensor makes up for the lens being pretty damned deep and dark at F4-5.6? I'd much rather carry an 18mm pancake prime to walk around and a 50mm when I want to do something.
i pick up my sonya7cii in a few days, but i wanna wait for the new 24-50mm 2.8 ... so i need just a lens for 4 weeks, i think this is the one! just to test out the camera a lil bit
when I initially bought the a7c, I got myself some prime lenses, moved to 2470 2.8 gm and now I ended up buying this lense and using it with my a7c, it´s the best experience and to be honest, if the light is there, there´s almost no difference with the gm, the 85mm 1.8, batis 40mm and more, it´s ridiculuos good and compact, such a money wasted on the other lenses....
I Appreciate the comments and agree on the light weight convince factor this lens offers, plus it's very sharp! However, it does not compare optically to the GM lenses or Batis lenses if you take a closer look. I would recommend A and B a few shots of the same exact scene and then compare the images...
I've got the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 and it is so small an amazing. Okay the MSRP of 800$ is a joke, when you compared it to MSRP of 220$ from the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm f2.8 (which I've tested) but I've found it refurbisched for 310$ and it is worth the price over the Samyang/Rokinon.
I bought the lens to use with a Sony A7Siii. Three Questions; Can toggle the Auto focus from a function menu on the Camera? Can I enable and disable the steady shod from the Function Menu on the Camera? Can I zoom the lens from the left right up down button wheel on the Camera?
Excellent video. I don't need a wider zoom range, to me 28-60mm is perfect. My only concern is linear distortion; is available any profile in camera raw for that lens?
Thanks and it really depends on what focal length you like to use and what kind of shooting or filming you plan on doing. I have the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens: amzn.to/2NqRiNv , FE 35mm f/1.8 Lens: amzn.to/3db98in , and FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens: amzn.to/3rKIz7K so far to complement the kit lens.
Great work Jay!!!...I need one suggestion...I am going to buy A7C for travel and food vlogging..want to shoot cinematic views and adventure views...can you suggest best lenses for me ????? And also tell me that i should go with the full kit or body only???????
Hi Rajesh, for food photography I love my FE 35mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/346N6ru) For those vast views usually a wide angle lens is preferred and in that case I would recommend the 16-35mm f/4 OSS Lens (amzn.to/2TeN5j5). If you get theses two lenses I would not get the kit lens. If you can only get the 35mm lens, then get the kit lens for the cinematic video. It really depends on your budget, because there are a ton of lens options! You could also for example go with the awesome Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Lens (amzn.to/3bNBbmu) That would cover all your needs and you would not need the kit lens. However, that lens is pretty darn heavy as a consequence of a fast aperture all in one zoom. I hope that helps, Jay
Is this a lens you'd use for detailed videography shots for real estate videos? I have the FE 1.8/14 GM for the wide shots. Using the AC7 camera. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
HI Jake and no I would not use this lens for Pro work, although you certainly could. I would go with something like the 24-70mm for all the other work instead to keep your quality consistent with the other GM lens you have... If you can go to 28mm then the Tamron 28-70mm would be a great more affordable option as well as the Sigma offerings...
Hey Jay, I already have the 28-70 kitlens for my A7 II, but can pick this one up for about 190 euros. Would you recommend picking this up to replace the older kitlens or should I just save the money for a higher quality zoom in the future?
Yes and no. I have used it, but I'm not missing it. I tend to use my FE 35mm f/1.8 Lens the most fallowed by the FE 20mm F/1.8, and then the FE 85mm f/1.8 I use for portraits and product shots mostly. I never really "miss" the 50mm for whatever reason these days. All the best, Jay
Well the Macro lens is awesome, but it would not be my first choice for food and culinary. Not that many shots will require seeing so close to the subject which is what a macro lens is optimized for. I would recommend using the 28-60mm first if you have it and see what you are missing. I would consider a 35mm first, but that can be confirmed with the zoom lens to see if that focal range works for you assuming you have it. Overall, yes the kit lens will ultimately do the job for you for sure if need be. However the larger aperture primes do yield a better "look" more often than not ;) I hope that helps, Jay
@@RosesRawReality I feel you. I checked out the kit lens before buying, and at F4-5.6 its almost worthless in any but the brightest situations. Just not worth the weight and size saving in my opinion. The 28-75 I have shot about a 1200 photos till now. And it is absolutely incredible. I love it.
@@Phoenixrider9241 I had so many problems with the lighting messing with the quality of footage that I had to scratch all the footage I shot for my video... editing couldn’t even save it... I thought having the A7C I would have way better lowlight performance... but with this lens I was sadly wrong...
@@RosesRawReality The A7C does have incredible low light capabilities, but I'm afraid the kit lens pushes it too far. The kit lens while sharp is soo high in aperture that I feel its borderline useless. And the zoom range is also tiny. The A7C + 28-75 I got was at the same price if I had got the kit. I love nighttime shooting, so the kit was an obvious no for me.
Hi bro I’m planning to buy A7C Should i get body alone and buy 50mm 1.8 separately or with kit lens? Wil the kit lens shine in low light like 50 mm ??My usage is mainly for low light and expectting great bokeh….please give ur suggestions ….confused between these two
You do a really good job at explaining certain task to pure beginners way better than anyone on UA-cam, and I’d like to thank you for that! For instance, I just watched your video on transferring your photos and videos from your camera to your computer (Mac) for beginners and it was exactly what I needed. Obviously I’m new to most of this and so I’m looking for help with yet another task... Once I’ve edited a few photos in Lightroom and I want to move them into Dropbox so that I can share some of the different images with different friends, what is the easiest way to do that? Would you happen to have a video on doing this? Or could you possibly explain it to me? Thank you very much for everything that your doing, it’s all extremely helpful.
Thank you very much for the kind words 1k horsepower, and by the way what do have that has that much HP? As far as sharing photos with friends from Lightroom that is really easy once you know how to do it. In fact I will make a quick video tutorial explaining how this works for you, Bec use I am sure you are not the only one wondering... However, with that being said, you need to select the photos you want in Lightroom and then export them by right clicking on one of the photos you have selected and choosing export. That will then open an export dialog window where you can choose your settings and location the files will go to be saved.
I was thinking about getting the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens but it is a lot bigger a pricier, but I am curious on the quality difference between the 2, do you have experience with both?
I reviewed the Tamron here: ua-cam.com/video/-qmeN28ziv8/v-deo.html It's a great lens option for sure and has better image quality corner to corner. However the 17-28mm lens would be considered a wide angle zoom lens. For a more equivalent lens the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 would be one to consider as well.
Well, that is an excellent point and if you are getting the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens anyway and don't mind the weight. In that case it makes perfect sense to skip this lens if you ask me AJ ;)
@@Jason_Hermann I’m upgrading my talking heads to the A7C from my 1st ever camera, Sony a6100. I’ll be using the a6100 for stream cam only & top down angle for unboxing until I fully replace it with a ZV1.
Been watching alot of your videos coz ive been preparing myself to buy A7C. I didn't know the kit lens does this well, looks like i dont need another lens for awhile since this does the job very well. May I know if this lens is weather sealed like the camera? Can it take light showers?
@@Jason_Hermann Tamron decent for video as well? Also, what would you recommend in conjunction with the tamron to give me a bit more reach with a longer throw that isn’t crazy expensive.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks. I just purchase a sony a7c with the kit lens. I will use try that out first. I want the sony 20mm for vlogging and the 35mm for talking head videos. Your post is appreciaed.
Congratulations Jay. Amazing work!!! I am buying the Sony a7C for travel, hike and adventure, so of course size and weight is an issue for me. I will be shooting photos and videos. Also love the wide angle lens and some zoom for landscape. What would be your best lens suggestion, please? Many thanks.
WEll, if I were to get only one lens it would defiantly be the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens (amzn.to/2ZnIj2I). The F/4 aperture is a bit slower than the f/2.8 zooms, but the range is great and the OSS will help with the lower shutter speeds. 24mm is pretty wide for most uses and you can always shoot a Pano if you want a wider view similar to what 16mm would get you for example. f/4 is not the best for low light, but you can always pick up a faster prime lens for those situations if needed in the future. I hope that helps, Jay
Good day sir what about using the kit lens in low light area? Closed window. The light will be a ring light and the fluorescent light.. Is it good? Planning to buy the a7c with the kit lens for drawing and cooking vids.
As long as your lights are powerful enough the kit lens will work great in my opinion. I use it all the time for B-roll and when filming from above for my overhead shots. I'm not using much light either, just a small unit for that stuff.
It's decent for video, but the focus does tend to hunt around a bit more than other more expensive lenses I notice when filming. I recently used it on my FX3 Beginners Guide and it lost focus on the back of the Sony fx3 screen several times, which was frustrating. However, I was at the minimum focus distance, which is admittedly hard... I should have moved the camera further back in hindsight is all.
Hello Athena :) To answer your question, no this lens is not motorized. It's a retractable design which is manually done and once open the zoom is also manual like a normal lens. All the best, Jay
Yeah, it's easy enough but not that smooth honestly. It is a cheaper kit lens so the build is not the greatest. Focus ring and zoom ring are very thin and have that plastic drag type feel if you know what I mean? It works fine, but it does not feel like a high quality lens does when it comes to zoom and focus ring buttery smoothness.... Sharpness is way better than I expected though, which is why I like this lens so much and use it myself all the time for review work when I don't need the fast apertures. It's super compact and light weight which is what I like as well.
I'm looking to move up to a camera (Full Frame) such as this. I need good stabilization for what I do, and sometimes going to a gimbal doesn't work. Compact is also very much a plus for what I video (holding the camera and cleaning carpets) I am currently using the Sony ZV-1 but stabilization is not good. I updated it to a Ulanzi Wide angle lens kit that has helped other factors (and even a bit better for stabilizing I feel) , but I am thinking full frame such as the A7C for compact. Do you have a lens you would recommend that can help with better stabilization. I like the Sony Vlogging handle and a reason I would like to stay with the Sony. Thanks for any input you can share with me. I'm just at a loss for the correct camera (and lens) for me.
Hi Mark, if you are holding the camera while also cleaning carpets I think a gimbal would be your best bet. The A7C is not going to do any better for you than the ZV-1 in that regard, although the A7C has the potential to yeild way better quality of course do to the huge full frame sensor. In reality, it will be heavier and more awkward to use if filming and working at the same time I would think. A gimbal should give you butter smooth footage though with the ZV-1.
@@Jason_Hermann thank you for your honest answer. Could you reccomend a gimbal for me? I have a Zhiyun Crane 2, and for my cell phone a dji osmo 3... And there's many times the Zhiyun won't perform for me well.
No problem Mark ;) As far as gimbals go the one you have should work great? However, one of the best options would be the DJI RSC 2 (amzn.to/3cjL905), because it has amazing power and features. However, it is really more heavy duty than you need for such a light weight camera. The good news it will work with heavier cameras like the A7C which is what I'm using these days.
@@Jason_Hermann thank you. I so like my DJI gimbal for my phones. I have been debating what to do next. Such a tricky video challenge for me so often. Thanks again for all of your help 😊

I decided to get my A7C with the kit lens. Btw, what is the exact case that you use at 4:00? I managed to track it down to one of the Ruggard holster cases, but they have many models. I'm looking for the smallest most compact one that the A7C and its kit lens would fit in.
I have the Ruggard 15 (amzn.to/3uKpFzl) which can also accommodate a slightly larger lens as well. The FE 35mm f/1.8 and FE 20mm f/1.8 lenses will also fit when mounted to the camera. As far as what scenario I would use be hiking with the kids mostly for me. Whenever I prime a prime hiking it's great for those few shots I can exploit the lens for, but I was want and need a zoom it seams like. All the best, Jay
Do you still own / use the Zeiss Loxia? Their compact size and high quality output seems like a great fit for the A7C. I remember your initial excitement, was wondering how you've found them long term?
I only had the lens for about a month on loan for the review Simon, but it is still a fantastic high quality manual lens option in my opinion! The Loxia series lenses are excellent!
Jay - I always enjoy your reviews and this one is well done. However, I question the versatility of this lens. There’s not that much separation between 28mm and 60mm, as your video demonstrates. This lens would be questionable for landscapes and would come short as a travel lens. Many people, including myself, rejected the RX100 v because of its limited range (24-70mm). This lens has an even shorted range! Mysteriously, this new lens has a small aperture of f/4 which makes no sense to me. For these reasons, I won’t buy it. As an alternative, the old 16-50mm APS kit lens acts like a 24-75mm lens on a full frame Sony, costs less, weighs less, is more compact, and has a brighter aperture. It’s wider at the wide end and longer at the telephoto end. The Image quality of the 16-50mm lens is excellent. $300/500 for a crippled kit lens? Sony would do better making a compact 24-85mm f/2.8 lens. That’s what I’d bet my $500 on.
Hi Fritz, I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the matter ;) Great points you raise and we all want different things at the end of the day. I'm coming from the perspective of the user that has no lenses yet, but wants the A7C full frame camera. I still really think it is an excellent full frame kit lens option for the money when considering all factors, especially compactness and light weight. This video was catered to those types of people in particular. The E 16-50mm kit lens is an APS-C lens, so I'm not sure why you would rather use that on a full frame camera? Using APS-C mode on the full frame camera defeats the purpose of the larger full frame sensor? With that being said, the E 16-50mm kit lens is pretty darn sharp in the center, compact, and light weight, but has sever distortion and soft corners in my opinion. Now the FE 28-70mm kit lens which I reviewed here: ua-cam.com/video/KP2ZVI8scjs/v-deo.html is also a good option for the money and does have more range, but it's large and heavy in comparison to this lens. I really think compactness is important to a lot of people, especially when you consider how heavy some of the alternative zoom lenses are.
@@Jason_Hermann You're right - I was coming at this as someone who would buy the lens by itself, not as part of a kit. If I bought the Sony a7C, I would spring for the extra money to get this lens. Keep up the good reviews, you always have good insights and honest evaluations!
Yeah, if shooting raw you will see that at 28mm. You can fix it by turning on the Lens Comp: MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [Lens Comp.] → desired setting
These days I mostly use prime lenses unless traveling light, then I am using this lens on my Sony A7C. My other prime lenses are the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens: amzn.to/2NqRiNv , FE 35mm f/1.8 Lens: amzn.to/3db98in , and FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens: amzn.to/3rKIz7K
Hi, thank you for the explanation. I want to mainly make portrait photos for Asian girls at middle distance, who wish thin face, and the background, in room and outdoor, both as photos and movie. What do you think about a light weight 35 mm objective e.g. Sony FE 35mm f1.8, or Samyang AF35mm f1.8, or the double weight Samyang AF 35mm f1.4 Sony E? I would save money and don't buy the 28-60mm kit. Later possibly the Tamron f2.8 28-70 for longer videos with changing scenes.
So I bought my A7CII body only without the kit lens as I see that 2nd hand the kit lens is waay cheaper than what I'll be paying if I get it together. I already have a Tamron 28-70mm G2, should I get this for like usd150 used? Also any prime lens recommendation if I plan just to buy only one?
That Tamron lens is awesome, so I would go with that! For a prime I would consider a 50mm f/1.8 which will be great for portraits and stuff like that, or you could go wider angle like a 20mm f/1.8 if you plan on walking and talking to the camera vlog style... You have so many lens options!! Check out this video for wide angle lens options if you are interested: ua-cam.com/video/IyiK2D9GUzc/v-deo.html
You are great thanks Could you show us how to make the a7c compatible with de ronin sc2 and the tracking raven eye system please 🙏🏻 Ricardo Thanks again
Since when is 28-60mm versatile range :) If you can get it with a camera for 200USD then it is a nice lens becaues it is tiny and very light. Otherwise go with other options... which are a lot more expensive unfortunately. Sony really needs a decent and inexpensive zoom lens like Canon RF 24-105mm STM. This 28-60mm is quite bad for video work if you zoom in or out because zooming is never smooth. It always jumps. If you don't zoom during video, that may be fine.
@@Jason_Hermann Cheers. One more from me. How can I focus on really close objects? I find it dificult to focus on really really close objects. Is there a setting or a trick to do that ?
well I am buying this camera but the seller told me that they are out of stock of the 28-60 and they told me that they have the 28-70 i am not sure if i should accept it
Yeah, it's a slower f/4-5.6 variable aperture, but that is what makes it so cheap, compact, and lightweight... Fast primes are my go to when applicable, but for a compact full frame kit this is a great option in my opinion when purchased as a kit for that reasoning... If you have no use for ultra compact and light weight, then I would certainly skip this lens! All the best, Jay
Yes, that lens is a much better option, but it costs a ton more and it's much larger and heavier... The purpose of this video was to say for $100 getting this with the A7C is worth it due to it's ultra light weight and small size if you even need a lens like that for certain situations. I have tons of lenses, but I still use this lens from time to time depending... All the best, Jay
I was actually super disappointed when I got the kit lens! But I needed a lens that was around F1.8 or in the 2s with stabilization, which this lens doesn’t have stabilization.... the A7C does have a 5 axis in body stabilization but you wouldn’t know it with how shaky the footage looks like with this lens straight out of the camera...
Sorry to hear that Rose and yes clearly this is not the lens for you. I would recommend something with stabilization and/or a faster aperture. Hand holding for 2 seconds is not exactly easy, have you considered a tripod?
Not just f4, it goes to f5.6 at the long end. But it is still an amazing sharp kit lens. Metal mount nice build and quick and silent focusing. I used it at a corporate event and I was very satisfied I havent used the 50mm 1.8 fe during the event. The low light performance high iso capability of A7c with it's outstanding AF is a very nice partner for this compact kitlens.
Please help me I have a camera Sony when I turn it on the les won’t open or come out I think the les is stuck please help me an I try to take the les out but it don’t have a button to remove the les please help me I don’t want to throw it away it turns on an everything the only problem is the les don’t come out when I turn it on please help
You have to rotate this lens in order to open it like I demonstrated in the video. I'm thinking you have it in the compact retracted position still? Also, take the lens cap off ;)
Yeah, it is a cheap lens! For the money though, it's pretty awesome in my opinion for the reasons I mentioned in this video and worth getting as a kit if you don't have that focal range covered and/or you are looking for the lightest/ smallest possible full frame kit... All the best, Jay
Saying it’s one of the best kit lens optics you’ve seen is kind of like saying taco bell is the best of the fast food restaurants. A 2.1 out of 10 compared to the other 1.9 out of 10’s
A waste imo.. better to add a couple hundred for a 28-200, and a 17-28 2.8 for vlogging. The apature is not that good and you soon want to upgrade from it
You are absolutely right about this lens. I bought the kit, ignored the lens and what using some borrowed Sony much faster lenses, and then was forced to return the borrowed lenses and use this kit lens, and I could not believe the optics of it. Counterpoint: Throw on the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and you're at just over 2 lbs with a sharp fast zoom that has an even more versatile focal length range.

This is pretty close to the range of my RX100V, from which Sony has blocked my upgrade path ever since.
And I suppose the Full Frame sensor makes up for the lens being pretty damned deep and dark at F4-5.6?

when I initially bought the a7c, I got myself some prime lenses, moved to 2470 2.8 gm and now I ended up buying this lense and using it with my a7c, it´s the best experience and to be honest, if the light is there, there´s almost no difference with the gm, the 85mm 1.8, batis 40mm and more, it´s ridiculuos good and compact, such a money wasted on the other lenses....
I Appreciate the comments and agree on the light weight convince factor this lens offers, plus it's very sharp! However, it does not compare optically to the GM lenses or Batis lenses if you take a closer look. I would recommend A and B a few shots of the same exact scene and then compare the images...
Thank you for the review. What's the bag at 4:02? I can see it's Ruggard, but which model?
i wanted to see video quality but nice to know about the photo anyways
Hi, thx for your review. Two questions
1- is this kit lens a full frame lense or Apsc lens?
2- could you get descent bokeh effect with this lens?
Full frame lens and yes as you can clearly see the bokeh effect in this video if you watch it...
#1 Yes, #2 Yes, #3 No, it's not a Powerzoom lens.
Excellent video. I don't need a wider zoom range, to me 28-60mm is perfect. My only concern is linear distortion; is available any profile in camera raw for that lens?
Yes, Lightroom has a profile and Sony has a correction on the cameras for it as well.
Thanks for the video. What do you think would be the second complement lens for this a7c camera?
Thanks and it really depends on what focal length you like to use and what kind of shooting or filming you plan on doing. I have the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens: amzn.to/2NqRiNv , FE 35mm f/1.8 Lens: amzn.to/3db98in , and FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens: amzn.to/3rKIz7K so far to complement the kit lens.
@@Jason_Hermann thank
@@Jason_Hermann I would definitely throw light on your suggestion......thanks for your support...god bless you 😀😀
What is this camera bag? I have one but it's really tight. This seems the right size.
Hey Jay,
I already have the 28-70 kitlens for my A7 II, but can pick this one up for about 190 euros. Would you recommend picking this up to replace the older kitlens or should I just save the money for a higher quality zoom in the future?
I would just keep the one you have and save up for a better lens in the future.
Have you used a 50mm on the a7C? Do you miss that focal length for a prime?
Would be 90mm macro good second lens for food video/culinary channel? And is this 28-60 good enough for this purpose?
Well the Macro lens is awesome, but it would not be my first choice for food and culinary. Not that many shots will require seeing so close to the subject which is what a macro lens is optimized for. I would recommend using the 28-60mm first if you have it and see what you are missing. I would consider a 35mm first, but that can be confirmed with the zoom lens to see if that focal range works for you assuming you have it. Overall, yes the kit lens will ultimately do the job for you for sure if need be. However the larger aperture primes do yield a better "look" more often than not ;) I hope that helps, Jay
I just purchased my Sony A7C with a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 . Personally I feel its a much better pair.
That is an awesome lens and combo Soul ;) Thanks for sharing!!
I wish I had gotten the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 lens, it would had been way better for the content I make then the kit lens.
Wil the kit lens shine in low light like 50 mm ??My usage is mainly for low light and expectting great bokeh….please give ur suggestions ….confused between these two
Hey Drake, if you need low light and want killer bokeh the 50mm f/1.8 lens (amzn.to/2CfgFJV) would be a great lens option for sure!
Here ya go ;) ua-cam.com/video/EiqmiwS6aZU/v-deo.html
Jason, which 3 Sony prime lenses -across a reasonable focal length range- would you get for the A7C? Priority is image quality and also small size.
I would get these first for my type of budget and size/ weight concerns. Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 Lens, Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 lens, Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you very much, Jason!
True.... but I was thinking to save $300 (body only) & put towards the 20mm 1.8 (vlog) & the 24-70mm 1.8, $2000 for the pair. That’ll cover me.

Looking to pick up the Sony a74. Would you recommend this lens, or Tamron 28-75mm g2, or both?

Just the Tamron, no need for both unless you want a super light weight and compact alternative lens option ;)

@@Jason_Hermann Many thanks! Sold!!!
@@Jason_Hermann Do you have a particular or link video in your channel using the a7c and its kit lens? Would love to watch... And thank you.
Is the a7C still ne the best in 2022? I wanna buy this!
It's still a great option in my opinion, but saying it's the best is very subjective.
@@Jason_Hermann thanks for the reply!
I bought a new A7C in 2023 for travel. I love it. Perfect? No, but i take it everywhere now.
What about video ? Is it ok also if you are a youtuber for taking videos ? Thanks
Hi Jay! 😃 Quick question - is the zoom motorized like on the little 15-50?
Hello Athena :) To answer your question, no this lens is not motorized. It's a retractable design which is manually done and once open the zoom is also manual like a normal lens. All the best, Jay
Thanks! @@Jason_Hermann How does the zoom feel? Is it a smooth, easy turn to zoom in and out?

@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciate your work 😊
Hey Jake, Bravo! is there a bracketing mode that shoots one picture and turns it into three different exposures?
Hey there, and not that I know of....
Btw, f3.5 × 1.5 = f5.25 on ff
I find it’s not good for macro, everything else it’s excellent
Yes, the Minimum focus distance is not good at all on this lens, because it is able to collapse down....

Hi, can u make a video about your lighting setup u use to shoot your son from this video?
Hello, I would recommend you check this video out: ua-cam.com/video/jx_PC1DfBxI/v-deo.html
For a prime I would consider a 50mm f/1.8 which will be great for portraits and stuff like that, or you could go wider angle like a 20mm f/1.8 if you plan on walking and talking to the camera vlog style... in Russia difference between kit and body a7c - almost 600$, that's why we shouldn't))
(sorry for my English)
Since when is 28-60mm versatile range :)
If you can get it with a camera for 200USD then it is a nice lens becaues it is tiny and very light.
Very versatile compared to a prime lens ;)
Help please. When I fully retract it, it wont focus anymore at all. the image has not clarity. I m using sony a7 iii.
You can't use it when it's fully closed? Only in the 28-70mm range on the lens when it rotates.
@@Jason_Hermann Yes, so when i retract it i can't use it? only when i use the 28-60mm range?

Can you please put the link to the bag you used at 4:01. - thank you
What's the F stop range on the kit lens? 4-5.6? Kinda high?? No?
Yeah, it's a slower f/4-5.6 variable aperture, but that is what makes it so cheap, compact, and lightweight... Fast primes are my go to when applicable, but for a compact full frame kit this is a great option in my opinion when purchased as a kit for that reasoning... If you have no use for ultra compact and light weight, then I would certainly skip this lens! All the best, Jay

Sure, I would recommend this good quality variable ND Filter so you can dial in how much you need in a variety of situations: amzn.to/3CrTysh
@@Jason_Hermann Appreciate the response Thanks
How is it in low light ?
Not the greatest with the slower aperture and no OSS built in.
Tamron 20-40 f2.8
Yes, that lens is a much better option, but it costs a ton more and it's much larger and heavier... The purpose of this video was to say for $100 getting this with the A7C is worth it due to it's ultra light weight and small size if you even need a lens like that for certain situations. I have tons of lenses, but I still use this lens from time to time depending... All the best, Jay
How would you compare this lens to the Sony 28-70 kit lens?

You're welcome!
@@Jason_Hermann I have been considering using a gimbal, or something like that to help keep it smooth.

Not just f4, it goes to f5.6 at the long end. But it is still an amazing sharp kit lens. Metal mount nice build and quick and silent focusing. I used it at a corporate event and I was very satisfied I havent used the 50mm 1.8 fe during the event. A waste imo.. better to add a couple hundred for a 28-200, and a 17-28 2.8 for vlogging. The apature is not that good and you soon want to upgrade from it
Getting this crazy stupid lens as an only lens on a full frame camera is just the most stupid choice in the world. Ridiculous
Who is saying that?
