Nice honest take Becca! The 28-60 doesn't deserve the title of 'kit lens', as most people associate that with low-quality and opt for something different.
If you bump into limitations, the Sony Zeiss 24-70 F4 can be nabbed for around $450 shipped. It's a perfect step up from the kit lens. That said, love me some kit lens. That little thing is constantly surprising. Sony found the perfect compromises to provide the most performance in the smallest size.
This video helped validate my choice to pick up the a7c with the kit lens! I cannot wait for it arrive! I was stuck in analysis paralysis forever trying to figure out what lens or lenses to start out with.
I had the same Samyang 24mm 2.8 on my A7iii and used it for the longest time as my A roll lens, and like you said with good lightning etc it looks fine, but I recently traded it for a Sigma 16mm 1.4 and the difference was mind blowing, even shooting in apsc crop mode. Looking forward to to next video!
love your content! i feel like you could be the proprietary a7C channel on youtube who doesn't just have bad things to say about this camera. and i love that you love the kit lens - it's so underrated. i feel like if this lens wasn't 'labeled' a kit it probably would get a lot more love. its a great lens. and i love it on my a7c as well.
I absolutely love these vlogs. I have been a huge fan of your stuff on The Verge for a long time. I am so happy you made your own channel. I wish you had the time to do a few videos a week, I would watch them all.
I'm in the Fujifilm ecosystem so this video doesn't "apply" to me, but I only wanted to say that lightweight lenses are everything! Wouldn't choose a giant lens unless I have to work with it.
Film school! Yes, as someone that worked at an Art College of over 12 years, def curious to hear your perspective on it, most especially as a younger, and very tech savvy creator.
Sorry Becca if my knowledge is not so high, but for what are you using an ND filter during shooting videos? I mean, I know what's the use of a filter for photo composing but can't understand how you use them to shoot video. Thanks!
You outshine that sun at the end a million times. You have such great screen presence and I really see a bright future for you. One new subscriber in the bag. :)
I bought three A7C kits with the 28-60 lens for each of them, a Sony 24-105 f4 G OSS forcthe main gimbal camera and a Sigma M11 for using my various Canon L series glass on any of the Sony’s.
Yay! Camera nerd stuff! Though i work in the film industry I don't know much about cameras but i absolutely love hearing people talk about stuff they are passionate about. See ya next week!
Becca, i thought for sure youd have a insta360 go 2 review out. I always look forward to your reviews of action cameras and headphones. Legit i saw it came out i jumped to the verge to see if becca had a video out yet. You are probably my favorite tech reviewer out there.
You should look the new viltrox 24 f1.8 that is coming out in these days, is small and light and you can zoom with apsc mode and clear image zoom, so you get a 24-55 :)
samyang 24 & 35mm are a mix bag, some are silent and others noise, there seems to be maybe different models or different factories maybe. My 24mm is silent, or near enough. my previous 35s one was silent but I sold it after I got bored of it then a year later got another, the second one was noisy while the first wasn't very noisy.
I've 5 lenses for my a6000. But the best one is the 16-50 oss. I agree with you. Kit lens is the best especially for vlogging... I was considering to have a7c... Probably I'll go for it... Thanks for this review...
I went ahead with a7c with the kit lens after contemplating for couple of months.. the camera is definitely a 'little ripper'.. but not crazy about the results from the lens.. would you say spending a 50mm prime lens for kids photography would a big upgrade? I dont feel the same results that my 50mm canon was providing, but need AF so dont wana go for an adapter
I really enjoy this very slightly more mellow version of Becca. I really enjoyed this video. It has a hint of Casey's editing to it, which I love. I can't wait to see what else is to come
So I made a comparison video of the 28-60mm "kit" lens vs Sigma 24-70 f2. (on my channel) which is almost as large and heavy as the Sony GM and I 100% REGRET upgrading from the kit lens. The contrast and sharpness of the kit lens was amazing and pairing the bulky Sigma 24-70 on my A7C is plain ol' stupid and essentially made me go buy the ZV1 for portability :( So sad you paid $400 for the kit lens. In Canada, the kit lens is $300 cdn ($238 USD). I actually returned my A7C kit for the A7c only body, but DAMN, if I knew I could sell for $400 USD, I would have sold it on Craiglist and made a HUGE profit :'( What mic are you using? Sounds really good.
I've got some nice glass but I just got my a7c body only (great open box deal) and now I regret not getting the kit lens for daily use and travel. I'm amazed how expensive the kit lens is by itself. Anyway, great video!
The 55mm FE is sweet. But we use the Sony 24-70mm zeiss the most. Twist!! Were rocking the A mount version with an LEA3 adapter. That's a workout. Stepup ring! Because you can buy one good filter and swap it to all your glass And "Becca tech" comes to the channel too! Yay.. we love it. Schnikies! Zoiks!
Ah thank you...this was short, quick, direct, and informative. I bought Sony A7iii and although it's an excellent camera, I think I am going to switch it out for A7C...I didn't realize how incredibly difficult it is to shoot without a flip out screen. Framing yourself is a pain! I will buy it with the kit lens :)
Shout out to Tiffin Filters. I bought a pair of 40.5mm UV filters to put on the kit lenses for protection. Ordered from Amazon and one box was empty! So I called Tiffin and they sorted a replacement next day direct and told me not to bother altering things with Amazon.
I use the Sony FE 35mm 1.8 for most of my talking head shots. Sharp in the center, fast AF tracking and solid color reproductions. I'm thinking about that kit lens to replace my 28-70mm.
Hey Becca I use the 24-70 f7 Zeiss lens on my a7c and I love it. It is small, gives you zoom and a very good quality image. I bought it used for €450,-
This is the video I needed, I'm think of buying a7c and wasn't convinced about the kit lens, now I'm cause I mostly record handhold and have to move and travel a lot.
Hi Becca. Ian from uk again. If you remember I recommended the Tamron 17-28 F2.8 to you when we spoke before. It compliments the kit lens very well and is supper sharp and f2.8 though the range. Also 17mm is great for handheld vlogging. Now it's not an expensive lens compared to Sony ones but if you're on a budget it's still a big outlay at $1000. If you get the chance try it out I think you will love it.
Trying to upgrade from my iPhone 13 Pro so I’m suddenly learning everything and whew. It’s a lot. I want something that’s gonna be the same perspective as my iPhone video currently. But I need good min focus distance as my iPhone is like 4 inches and even that I complain about. Need something with fast focus that’s nice and sharp. Thibking of Sony 35mm 1.8. Even though their 1.4 is sharper..it has bad focus breathing and 10 inch focus distance. Maybe I need a zoom lens. Maybe that would allow me to get close on objects I DONT KNOW 😭
Hey Becca, great video. I love your work on Verge, but your solo work is equally awesome. I would LOVE to know about how you think film school benefits your work on UA-cam. I see a lot of youtubers who just want to drop out of school and vlog for a living. I'm curious if you think film school brings any benefit to the UA-cam life. Cheers!
I was going to ask if you've considered step-down rings for the ND... then I've checked the filter size it takes. Yeah, step-down rings are not happening at that size, it's tinyyyy. 😅😍 Completely unrelated question: any experience with 35mm or medium format film?
I love the a7c, but I could never own one because it doesnt have a full shutter.. There are a few other issues, but that was the deciding factor unfortunately which bums me out because I really really love the form factor and the size and everything about it.
Hey if I'm vlogging with a7c i have end up with many footages. then while editing is it not very tedious process to stabilize all of that footages?? apart from that if i stabilize that then it will crop too.. So still do you recommend this camera for vlogging? I mean to stabilize it is one more step to do, and it will crop too...?? grettings from India ❤️
i have the 20mm 1.8 sony, the 28-60 kit lens, and i'm picking up the tamron 70-180 next :D Fantastic video by the way! subscribed, i loooooooove listening to you talk!!!
Totally agree with you. I switched to the a7c from an Olympus Pen-F, and the size of the lenses is pissing me off so much xD My main reason was I want to use all my vintage lenses at full frame, and it's amazing for that. I got the 28mm F2 in addition to the kit lens for talking head shots, it's reasonably compact and it's served me well so far! (Wish it was 24 or 20 tho)
Great, informative and entertaining video! ❤ your vlogging style, Becca! So funny and 💯 I'm (tentatively...PLZ!!!) planning a European vacation later this year and want to upgrade to a FF mirrorless cam, mainly for photos. In your video, you said the A7C's kit lens is ideal for vlogging. Would you recommend it for photos? (Touristy stuff.)

what sony FE lens do you love, bud?
Sony 20mm f1.8. So sharp and just right for what I need it for.
@@DirtyMath ahh yes would love to replace the Samyang 24mm with the that one at some point!
Sony 24-105 F4, the best all-around travel lens for my Sony A7III
for video the 35mm f1.8, 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8
@@AndrettiBrown primes primes primes! i see you!
I wanna hear about film school. Actually, I wanna hear about everything.
2020 in a nutshell. “I wanted to be closer to things without physically being closer to things...”
Someone at Sony saw this and decided to develop the 24-50 2.8 g-lens.
Though it is probably 5x the price of that Samyang
Nice honest take Becca! The 28-60 doesn't deserve the title of 'kit lens', as most people associate that with low-quality and opt for something different.
I like that you didn't say "this lens is really good", but "this lens is what I need". I think many videos on UA-cam don't put enough emphasis on that
That is the exact sound my cat makes when she’s “making biscuits”

Most importantly: Where did you get the flannel from?
an ollllllldddd friend ~ gonna bet I found it at a thrift store though!
I suscribe this question
The kit lense is decent. Only gripe I have is it's rings not as smooth!
Maybe now with the sigma 28-70 contemporary is an option
just bought a sony a7c and came across your vlogs.. so awesome and has that good vibe energy. thanks! and hope all is well too

The sony FE 28mm F2 works wonders for me. Switching to crop mode gives you a 42mm option as well.

I’m sure it’s been mentioned but have you looked at the Tamron 28-75 2.8?
I picked up the Sony 20mm 1.8 lens for my song a7c and it’s such a beauty
Solid choice and a great video. My plan is to get the A7C with that kit lens and then get the Tamron 17-28 as my vlogging lens.

Yes! I would like Becca's camera + lens + shirt.
Hey Becca I use the 24-70 f7 Zeiss lens on my a7c and I love it. It is small, gives you zoom and a very good quality image. I bought it used for €450,-
Great video. Do you think the kit lens will still be a decent choice for the 7C if I plan on shooting video of nature, animals and landscapes?

in my experience the best kit is the one you can afford. I will admit the sony a7c (thanks in part to your video) is on my shopping list.
I use the samyang 18mm 2.8 for the lightweight go to lens. I'm tempted with the kit fir the same reasons you mentioned
I was so psyched I got this kit lens with my body.
Just got the A7C with the kit lens. Excited to see what happens next.

You make me want to ditch my A6100 for an A7C. But I do want the 17-28 tamron 2.8
Have you thought of the new sigma 28-70? It’s the lightest in its class, (470g!)and f2.8 (!!).

So true. Most modern kit is more than enough.
I’d actually been super curious what you were using, love your videos so much, what do you use for sound?
Great video as always!
Is a7c overall control smooth than a73?
A73 seem having some delay while after pressing
Great, informative and entertaining video! ❤ your vlogging style, Becca! So funny and 💯

ok, we know about the lens but what about the mic?
👀 .. stay tuned, bud hehe
Would love to hear your thoughts on film school! Looking forward to that video if you decide to make it 😀
Personally, I don't care for Samyang/Rokinon because you need to pay for the extra add-on mount to upgrade the firmware.

The Sony 28-60mm is amazing for $250 used. For $500 new it is not worth it IMO
I chose $250 as a used priced cause it’s $300 new with the a7c kit.
