    6:12 you meant a piece of Creps, right? so many play on word things in here, funny! Good review as well - can only agree, got it with the a7c (it was ~200€ in the kit vs. 380€ standalone).
    I still search a wider lens now for vlogging - the 28mm are too tight with catalyst...

    One of the best real world reviews that I have seen of this lens. I am so on the fence for picking up the a7c and whether to get the kit lens or just the body alone has been a consideration as I already have a bunch of small primes. I currently use the a7iii so, while I would appreciate the smaller body, the improved auto focus and the flip out screen ( but not the puny viewfinder!) I find my commonsense telling me to wait for the a7iv just in case it is a game changer. Just release it already, Sony!! Btw, I watched your 20mm 1.8 review and cracked up on your "Kanye the West" analogy - brilliant!

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Chryseas thanks so much for the kind words:) I think it's a tricky decision from what you say - I had the A7C be my first full frame body, plus I rarely use the viewfinder and love Catalyst stabilisation so the A7C was an easy choice, your circumstances make it less clean cut! I will say the kit lens surprised be - its a very handy little all rounder and the zoom range isn't bad for how pocket friendly it is. I love my primes but if travelling light I do think the 28-60 is helpful. Really pleased you like the humour too - I get mixed reactions sometimes but I figure you can be informative and fun plus I get bored of watching very dry content myself:) Let me know what you decide, consider subbing if you're enjoying the vids and have a great weekend!

    Hey Great Review! I'm between a6600 with 16 55 1.8 G or the a7c with this kit lens, trying to figure out wich would be the better choice for cinematic videos. What do You think? Thanks! :)

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Hey Mauri, thanks for the great question. And it's a tough one!
      I'd say the A7C is a bit more future proof thanks to the full frame sensor and the ability to use gyro stabilisation. The kit lens will also give you a bit more zoom range - you can go from 28 to 90 (the 60 in 1.5x crop mode) whereas the 16-55 will give you a field of view equivalent to 24-82.5, so slightly wider.
      For bokeh the 18-55 would have an edge. Crop sensors give less bokeh than full frame so a 1.8 would be equivalent (after 1.5x crop) to the bokeh of an f2.7 on full frame, so that's a decent difference vs the f4-5.6 of the kit lens. The constant aperture of the 18-55 is also going to be better for zooming in video since you won't need any setting on auto to compensate aperture narrowing as you zoom.
      This really is a close one haha - my ideal scenario: I'd take the A7C and pair it with the 18-55 haha! But from the choices you mention I'd say A7C if you won't be using a gimbal all the time - super shaky footage will be more noticeable than less bokeh when trying to creating something cinematic, so that would be my tiebreaker. Hope that helps - the answer for you might be different depending on your use case so hopefully the thinking out loud helps a bit:)

    Really loved your video! If you were to choose a prime lens to film videos which would be? 35, 50, 85? Thank you!

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Thanks Cinqo and great question:) It is a tough one though 😆
      So in reality I’m a fan of fixed aperture zooms if I have to pick one lens for video because of the flexibility (I talk about some of those in a review here: ua-cam.com/video/LQxEcfo4jW4/v-deo.html) but I’d probably be leaning toward the 35 or 50.
      It depends a lot on what you tend to film but I feel like if you intend to have human subjects those focal lengths are a bit more flexible and complimentary and you can also manage the position of camera and subject more easily-an 85 is a bit too telephoto to have the same flexibility in my view even though it’s amazing for those more compressed and close detailed shots. Opinions will vary and there are no wrong answers but those are my thoughts:)
      Happy to pick up any other Qs (especially since this one was so interesting).

    Good video chap. Greetings from the top of the Northern Line I got mine included with my A7C as my first full frame camera and thought it would be a good learner for me. You’re spot to n with the 28mm, it’s just an awkward size for vlogging and using as a webcam. I do enjoy using it for street photography(not around my ends obviously) when I don’t want to carry a bulky lens. Otherwise my go to lens is the 24-105 G F4.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Tom great to hear from you:) Totally agree with that verdict - for me this one is great value when bundled with the body, maybe not something I’d have bought separately but now I have it I do get a solid amount of use.
      Interested in your views of the 24-105. Had my eye on that for a while but struggling to justify the investment given I have the aps-c equivalent (18-105G). The extra full frame bokeh would be nice, but given I work in video I’m not sure I’d gain too much more. Views welcome:)

      @@dbvares8745 I also had the APSC version as originally bought the A6600. Both excellent. In fact it’s why I bought the full frame version as loved the versatility of the APSC one. I’ll try and do a dummy demo of the bokeh and send you a link if I get the chance. Sub’d also watched your 50mm F1.8 vid, noisy as F focus but great picture quality and for £160 it’s an essential buy For sure. Although the 35mm F1.8 was in Prime Day for £380, that’s now my go to lens for webcam and studio vlog lens.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Ah very nice, and yeah I’d be curious to see. Even the f6 equivalent of the 18-105 starts looking pretty great once you get into the telephoto range so I’m guessing the full frame brother should be tasty 😂
      The 50mm f1.8 surprised me actually-the focus is very much the Achilles heel, but not hard to mitigate once you know the situations it’s fine in and the actual image quality for the price is tough to overlook. For the time being at least it’s earned a spot in my main selection 😂
      The 35 f1.8 sounds legit too. I can run my 20mm on crop mode to proxy the field of view though not the optical character so no doubt I’ll be wanting to pick that up at some stage haha!

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +1

      Hey TA, sorry for my slow response to a great question! Given the weight of the a7c and capacity of the crane m2 the most important thing is a pretty light lens so I’d suggest something like the Samyang 24mm f2.8 I tested here: ua-cam.com/video/_CJ3J2UBB3M/v-deo.html
      I think the new lightweight Sony 24mm f2.8 would likely work too or the samyang 18mm f2.8, but I haven’t had a chance to test those yet! Hope that helps:)

    Quick question. Not sure if u mentioned this (as I am watching in mute not to wake daughter or husband ) ...when vlogging, how far out do u have to hold the camera? Is your arm fully extended ? Comfort is important. Thank u!

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Hey Isabel, great question. With the 28 the widest part isn’t super wide so for vlogging I would recommend a grip extension. Therefore a wider lens might be better.
      The Sony 20mm is great and much wider:
      ua-cam.com/video/FtlvtfAYjjk/v-deo.html
      Or if you’re wanting something light with a similar zoom range the Sony crop kit lens could be inexpensive and worth a look:

    • @dbvares8745

      Hey TDF, I picked up the 3kg option so I’d have a bit more flexibility for heavier lenses (the A7c is around 509g and there’s plenty of full frame lenses over 490g). The 1kg will work fine if you know you’ll be using lighter lenses though:) Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great weekend 👍

    Another great video, exactly what I was looking for. I’d like to ask for your opinion here. If you were on a kinda limited budget, would you get a Sony A7C with this 28-60 Kit lens or a Sony A6600 with 18-135 lens, which is much more versatile and a bit brighter. Thoughts?

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +2

      Hey DM, great to hear from you and hope you're doing well:) Great Q! I'm not sure of the price difference but unless you need the extra zoom range a lot I'd go for the A7C (and I did consider both before making that same choice of 6600 v A7C). The reasons for me were the flip out screen is a bunch more versatile than the flip up one; Sony IBIS sucks for any kind of walking shots, but the catalyst gyro stabilisation on the A7C is great once you know how to use it; you can use crop lens on a full frame body and they will work great but you can't do the opposite; the full frame sensor also means better low light and more bokeh.
      I'm planning a video on this but a lot of people don't realise that f1.8 is not the same amount of bokeh on all cameras - it depends on sensor size. If you have a crop lens at f2 it give a depth of field and bokeh similar to an f3 on a full frame lens (1.5x crop factor). Sorry if that got a bit techy but I find this stuff way too interesting haha!
      That's not to say the 6600 is a bad choice - it might be perfect for your use case, but that's the thinking that made me get the A7C. Let me know if you have any other Qs plus I'm interested in what you decide! Have a great weekend and take care:)

      @@dbvares8745 wow great feedback! Appreciate the very detailed answered!
      I decided to go with the A6600 because I got a good deal, but that A7C as you mentioned really seems the one to go.
      However, I just read Sony is releasing a new A6600 replacement in May 2021. So that is really making me think whether I should return mine and wait. I am almost 100% sure we’re getting that new gyro function in this new model as well. Apparently it’s coming with a newer 30mp sensor. I’m not sure if that would improve on lower light conditions but we’re gonna have to wait until the release.
      Thanks once again for you hard work and support. We appreciate!!!

      Hey Bondanoz, it definitely wont be the lens. It’s a little while since I made this, but I think the answer may be the way Catalyst browse gyro stabilisation processed that clip-good chance it’s my user error not using optimal settings while trying to get things done on time 😆 I wouldn’t worry about that as a recurring issue:)

I’ve definitely got a bunch of use from it and still will. But I probably wouldn’t have picked up at full price. I guess that’s what Sony intend with their pricing 😆

    Nice video, thanks! The footage from the a7c looks really good! Can I ask what your thoughts are on getting a good gimbal for the a7c? Crane M2 or Weebill S or DJI RSC2? Taking into account possibilities of a few non-G master lens. I like the crane M2 because of its size, portability and price and I can use it on the zv1 also, but it may be at the upper limit of weight for the a7c and like a 20mm f1.8 prime lens?

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +2

      Hey T Sizzle, great to hear from you as ever and very good Q:) Apologise in advance for the long answer, but hopefully it's helpful:
      So the Crane M2 is great for lighter setups - it works great with the A7C kit lens and some smaller prime lenses like the Samyang 24mm f2.8. BUT the weight tolerance is 720g and the A7C is something like 507g. While you can probably push a bit over that limit for simple stabilisation (pan follow rather than tough POV tilting for example) for the most part you're limited to lenses within 200-220g weight - there are some for full frame but not a huge selection and the 20mm f1.8 (which is a proud new addition I'll have a vid on in the next few weeks) is around double that weight so it would be a struggle. As you say it's also versatile and will be great on ZV1 and smartphones (that can be useful sometimes).
      My bigger setup gimbal is a Moza Aircross 2 (3.2kg payload, 1kg) and I haven't had a chance to own and test the others, but here's how I would compare stuff if I were choosing on paper:
      The DJI has a payload of 3kg and it weighs 1.95kg; the Weebill has the same 3kg payload capacity but weighs just under 1kg.
      In my experience if you're using one arm a lot (vlogging, reaching into unusual positions for shots) lighter can be better, if you want to maximise stability heavier gimbals can be good as the heaviness naturally gives a bit more stability, but the difference, if any is going to be marginal. Heavier may also be comfortable at times as it better distributes weight between the end you're holding and the camera but this can vary with the weight of your setup so could swing either way.
      Both options (and the Moza I have) give a 3kg+ capacity which will hold the A7C and pretty much any lens I can think of so long as there's enough space to balance with decent weight distribution (so crazy telephoto lenses won't work but most other stuff should).
      The weebill definitely has a more interesting and compact form factor which is cool if size and weight are priorities, the Moza is a similar weight but I can confirm it does not pack down super small haha and the DJI seems to be a similar story so I'd lean towards the Weebill if those things are key.
      Stabilisation quality 'should' be similar on all these - my personal take here is I test a gimbal for a few days and just return it if I'm unhappy after I've ensure I know how to balance and set it correctly - did this with a Feiyutech I initially picked up for my bigger rigs.
      Plus the awesome thing about the A7C is for most frame rates you can tighter key shots in Catalyst if you want and eve a couple of % crop can go from 'nice gimbal' to 'hollywood steadicam' smoothness haha.
      All of them seem to have similar shooting modes as you'd expect and all of them have apps. If you're likely to really use all the extended features then comparing them might be worthwhile but I'm mostly a 'just stabilise my shots please' type of user:) The moza app works fine; DJI's app for my iPhone gimbal works well and the Zhiyun app form my Crane is the most frustrating to use but ultimately still works ok.
      Lastly, it's worth looking at Amazon renewed and equivalents as well as second hand. Obviously you want to get something in good condition but gimbals are one item I think should be more robust over time - I got the Moza for £220 on a great amazon renewed deal vs the £200 I payed for my Crane brand new. You need a bit of luck but it's possible to find bargains sometimes.
      I'm probably forgetting something but those are the areas I'd think about and what I can add. I'll leave associate links below in case you decide to pick up any of them and want to support the channel at the same time, but I'd say the most important thing is work out what your main uses are going to be and see what fits that best. And let me know what you pick - always cool and interesting to hear:)
      Zhiyun Crane M2 Gimbal: amzn.to/3pcitck
      Zhiyun Weebill S: amzn.to/2PJ20QP

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Hey Shabeer, good Q.
      Fundamentally they are pretty different: an a7c and kit lens costs nearly triple the zv1. If you need a full frame sensor or interchangeable lenses a7c and kit lens is probably the better route.
      For convenient high quality shooting where everything built into the zv1 will be enough for what you want to do the zv1 is likely the better choice. More on the zv1 here in case useful: ua-cam.com/video/LCCCYPIvMCg/v-deo.html

    Awesome vid man, subbed and liked 👍
    Great overview of the lens, just what I was after however still don't know if its the right one for me 😂 Looking to use for shots of motorbikes, walk around videos with ideally nice depth of field to look beautiful and then will also be using for home studio set up. Similar to your at home filming in this video but a tighter office space so thinking I might need a wider lens with the option for more bokeh. Any reccomendations appreciated, will have a look at the rest of your vids over coming days to see if you've been through others. Thanks again

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Hey Tommy, thanks for watching and great to have you on board:)
      So I think motorbikes will automatically make shots pretty badass 😆 but more generally I’d say this lens is a good all rounder. A nice selection of focal lengths and nice but not crazy bokeh when shooting closer up or more zoomed. Plus it’s super light and portable.
      I’d say the wide end is fine for studio shots. I normally use my 20m f1.8 in crop mode giving a 30m equivalent and find that works well.
      As for aperture, there are definitely some nicer wider aperture options but you’re then trading off selection of focal lengths, aperture and cost.
      So you might get a wider aperture prime without spending too much but if you want some zoom capability for choice of focal lengths too it’s going to start being quite a bit more expensive.
      I’ve got a bunch more lens reviews planned for Sony full frame and aps-c so hopefully some of those will be helpful too:)
      Hope that makes sense and let me know if you have any questions 💪👍

      @@dbvares8745 thanks that answers a lot. Keen to see more vids from you on sony full frames but will check out the ASP-C stuff too. Some other vid ideas from the perspective of someone getting into it and occasionally confused -
      Break down of what to look for in a lens.
      Break down of lens compatibility.
      What manufacturers are generally a good bet.
      Maybe a demo of that stabilisation software you used in the vid.
      Camera settings and editing workflow for improved image etc.
      Sorry know you probably have a vid schedule lined up 😂 Those are probably my main thoughts at the moment so others may be on the same path. Keep up the good content 👌

      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      These are some good suggestions bro, many are in the plans and waiting for me to find time to do them, but there's some little twists and extras that are really good ideas too - I'll see how best I can incorporate:)
      As far as some quick tips on brands: Sony lenses will genuinely work great since they are native to the camera body, but are often pricier too. Sigma have a great reputation and my one lens of theirs fully supports the rep; Tamron is seen at a similar tier - a bit cheaper than Sony but still high quality and I intend to get one of two when I can justify the expense:) Viltrox and Samyang are then typically similar or a shade less expensive and will do a good job but usually with one or two more compromises. These are far from hard rules but that's a super simplistic take on the broad market shapes as I've seen it. Hopefully I'll get the chance to own and test much more stuff and have a far better picture as a result in the future!

    I JUST bought this camera with the kit lens the day after you released this video. I haven't done much shooting with it yet, but I had been looking at other prime lenses with much larger apertures. (Like the Sony FE 50mm f1.8) But then I thought that perhaps I should see just what this lens is really capable of before spending more money. Perhaps the nifty fifty might be good for low light applications, but after seeing your video, I'm going to really give this kit lens a real shot! Thanks for this! Great video, informative, and I loved the humour too. Subscribed!

      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Hey Stephajn, thanks for watching and really appreciate such a nice and interesting comment:)
      Congrats on the new purchase first - I'm really enjoying the A7C and I was surprised at the results I could get with that little kit lens so I hope you have a similarly positive experience. I have a few other lenses and there's definitely a difference in some situations - bokeh on the Sony 20m f1.8 is insane for example; but I do think the kit lens is a great all rounder - worth seeing what it can do for how you shoot then you can fill in the gaps or the looks you're missing with additions.
      My other tip is if you like cinematic close ups with bokeh then using the compression you get from being at the tighter end of the zoom range can help even with the higher aperture - I was surprised how much I liked some shots I did like that haha.
      Welcome on board and have an awesome day! :)

    • @dbvares8745

      Hey Sune, very fair question! For me it’s just the definition-I think of vlogging as when you’re walking with your camera held out at arms length or similar. Studio shots are more a function of the space you have - I’d probably go tighter or wider if I was in a different room but the length of my arms wouldn’t change if you see what I mean:)
      And yeah 20 to 60 would be awesome, especially with the aps-c mode giving a usable 20-90; that would be ultra adaptable and I’d be at the front of the queue 😆

      It will depend a bit on your use case. A7C is a nice upgrade if you want something more compact; you want to use catalyst stabilisation in video (which is great), you want the proper flip screen or the slightly updated colour science.
      All those are nice and why I picked A7C myself. However you get a less ergonomic grip and less comfortable viewfinder with the A7C. Those don’t bother me but they are tradeoffs.
      The important thing is how much those differences matter for your use case-that will tell you which to pick:)
