That said, I've been to Aruba many, many times alone with no problems. I've done all kinds of fun and unusual things there and traveled to many other places. I've found in life that common sense and situational awareness helps greatly, to keep yourself out of trouble.

Kids, when your parents say no to going off alone with a stranger, accept it. Parents, never let your children go off with strangers and don't give in when they're sad about it.

Thank you for your considerate comment. This is an awful story and I feel so bad for this family. Fortunately these days we are more aware of these things. I imagine this man was extremely manipulative and appeared benevolent. He seemed to be controlling his son into perjury and guilt too! Disgusting… 😭

Exactly. Now there are adults who encounter children that are being abused or molested in the home by a family member(s). And even those adults would not seek time alone with the child but would seek intervention of authorities to save the child. Sadly, there are many monsters that prey on their own children or younger family members in various way also. One can not always say that a child is safe or protected by their family. That is why all adults are responsible for the well being of all children. Even those who are not their own.

I'm sure she thought the outing would be a chance for Max to have something similar to father-son time that he would have been missing since his father's death. I'm sure she felt the pressure of a teenage boy not wanting to spend every minute with his mom and thought 45 minutes apart would be fine. 14 years of cherishing and protecting a child destroyed by monsters. Exactly. It's a motorized vehicle on the vast ocean. However, I do blame the accompanying Aunt more than the mother. The Aunt was there to help the mother, who had lost her husband and may have not been all together mentally yet. The Aunt should have said absolutely not. If I had been there as an Uncle, I do not care what the actual parent said, I would have told the boy no. I would have even been rude if need be, and said flat out. You are an adult man. You barely know this boy. What are your real intentions. That alone would have made the man say never mind. Someone just needs to express some suspicion of the situation. Or the family should have said we will all go, or no one will go.

@romankozak3216 She had more than a split moment. This was the second time. Also, a parent's instincts walk a fine line between protecting a child and letting them grow. Again, I have no right to judge her. And I do not judge her, no matter how my words might seem to betray that.
It is painful for all of us who witness this story. All of have times in our lives when our guard is let down. For any number of reasons. More than anything, my comments are a response of anger and horror that this happened.
But again, I was aware at a young age that monsters exist in every human. Even those that would never rape and murder a child, there exist monsters of different types.
Luckily for most of us, our natures, our lives, our karma, --- host of many elements, gave us different lives. Yet we too suffer, as witnesses to such horrors.
In the end, I know that all that happens and will happen can never be stopped. No matter how hard we try to stop it. And all that does not happen, nor is to never happen, can never be made to happen. No matter how hard we try to make it happen.
Everything is on a path set from the dawn. Every human existence is an arrow shot. That began where it began and shall end where it ends. Nothing can alter its course. Nor its destiny.
Yet, my human self, still argues with that reality.

@@SpiderHacksawThe only people who failed here are the authorities whose job it is to conduct an objective investigation and bring Justice to victims of criminals. The two con artists/ pedophiles/murderers, obviously used the father-son trope to pull on the heartstrings of this widowed mother. They preyed on her child because she was emotionally and mentally vulnerable. They already knew she was missing her husband and her son was missing his father. Bingo. A way to pull on her heartstrings and let her guard down: offer to fill that impossible role of experienced fatherly older brotherly male bonding that she knew her son was missing.
It is totally unjust to blame anyone but the perpetrators. The mother is a victim, the aunt is a victim, and their poor daughter/ the boy's sister is a victim, not to mention the boy himself. The family was targeted.

Older than 55? What does that matter?. Max should not have been allowed to go off with any stranger. Not even female. Females have often procured children for men. The reality is never feed you child to any stranger. Even though most abuse and molestation occurs at the hands of a family member or family friend or "trusted" institution, like a church, or boy scouts or a doctor for any olympic team, or any position of power or guidance over a child, it also occasionally happens, and more likely ends in death, when the monster is a stranger.

A woman and her two teenage daughters went on vacation to Florida and met a guy there who wanted them to ride on his boat. This wasn’t a boat you get on with other tourists. Her and her daughters go with his man on a boat in the ocean and he murdered them.
Natalie Holloway decided to hang out with some strangers in Aruba after drinking and partying and she end up being murdered.
Why Max‘s mother would allow her son to go off with a stranger is beyond me. It’s bad enough that they even did anything with these unknown people let alone have her son go off by himself with this man.

If you are an adult, you never trust anyone fully with your child or anyone's child. You must always have awareness to children, to just be aware to anything off. Children are abused, neglected, molested, raped, and murdered every day, everywhere in this world. The majority of the predators are family members or friends of the family, or members of a trusted institution, and sometimes absolute strangers, as in this case.
