Hi! Do you plan on using streaming services like Spotify as well in the future? I have no idea on the trade off for you, but it’s so accessible nowadays, it just made me curious.
I have never been so stoked for a new video! Shawn I can't tell you enough how awesome this is! Since I first heard you play you have become my favorite guitar player. The outside stuff is refreshing to hear and learn thanks again
Having transcribed a lot of your “out” licks on pedal demos and your new album (which is awesome btw) this was really cool to see how you break these ideas down. Thanks Shawn!
Thank you Shawn! I once enquired about about your guitar lessons and though they were very, very reasonable it was still unaffordable for me. So I am very grateful for your teaching videos.
Duuhooode! The Bb+ trick is the "bag"! Love it! Shawn you're killin me! I've been coppin' licks all day brother! I'm gonna grab the home-slice program too! You rock man!
great lick. would've loved to hear it against a backing track or loop to get a sense of how outside it was and how you resolve it - just for context. that said, love your style and these "outside" tutorials. thx!
Another really excellent lesson man! I am loving these - thanks so much for the insights Shawn 😊 since the last lesson you did I have been playing with this concept and have figured out some outside licks of my own finally! Yay! And I am loving it! Thanks man - looking forward to the next instalment - have an amazing weekend! 😊🙏🤟
Very cool! I really like how you do the muting. It's actually a huge part of what makes your style YOU. It really helps to clean up the over ring that can make a player sound sloppy. It's something you are especially good at. In my opinion, it's one of the characteristics of your playing that makes even the simplest riffs sound deadly when you play them up to speed. So jealous, but it fires me up to keep practicing. Thanks Shawn!
Thanks for sharing these licks and concepts, they might be simple but they're very effective. BTW your album is just amazing, been wearing it out and digging it. Looking forward to picking it apart and stealing your ideas! Haha!
Seriously, THANK YOU, Shawn! I've been trying to find lessons just like this! You have quickly become one of my favorite guitar players! I'm a huge fan of Ian Thornley (Suhr player) also, and he does colorful scales like this as well. Also, a huge shout out on all the Suhr equipment! I actually have the same white Classic Pro as you, which first brought me to you. And since then, I come back daily! Thank you again! And if you haven't checked any Ian Thornley out, please do! He's the singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist in Big Wreck. A jam instrumental to really hear his chops in would be "Skybunk Marche'". Btw, I'm in western KY, only a couple hours away, and Big Wreck will be playing at the Mercy Lounge Oct. 14th. I'd love to meet you there! Oh, and I'll be buying Demolition! Listening now, and it is beautiful.
Thanks so much for all of the kind words. Ian is a really sweet dude and I know his playing well!! Truly gifted guitar player, singer-songwriter! Thanks for checking out my demolition record! Cheers!!
Killer lesson! Are those half step moves part of the diminished scale? LOVE your new record. Can't stop listening to it. If anyone here hasn't gotten yet, what are you waiting for already??!! Awesome video. Thank again!
Great riff, great lesson! I agree that, with your clear explanation and really slow renditions of the riff, it's not "rocket science" to learn it (tho still tricky for me to get it up to speed!). But what I really want to know, for this and your first "outside playing" lesson, is how did you decide to use those particular notes/triads when going outside - going from Am7 triad to E flat major triad in Lesson 1, and from E pentatonic to the flat 5, 9th and dom 7th notes (looks like an F#aug5 triad) in Lesson 2? Seems to me that's where the rocket science - the genius of Shawn Tubbs - really comes in! Thanks for the great lesson. Oh, and I agree that the selective muting adds a lot!
Thanks so much for watching and for the question! The majority of what I do is by accident and learning things wrong but finding my own voice in the mistake. Check out Robben Fords version of "Help the Poor". That was one of the first inspirations for me.
@@ShawnTubbs Thanks for your response! I'm vaguely familiar with RF's version of Help the Poor, but I will have another few listens to focus on his soloing. Love your videos, keep 'em coming!
Would that lick be played over one chord or a series of chord changes? I think the lick would make more sense to me in the context of a song. Kind of like in your pedal demos you have a backing track and demo a pedal playing a solo. I appreciate you providing these tips. Take care and God bless.
Nice one Shawn, for my self if l could combine some Shawn Tubbs and Doug Rappoport then I'd be happy, thats a big ask but l aint gunna stop trying........Giddyup
Hi Shawn - thank you so much for this lesson, learning a tonne from it (even just those little pentatonic licks you're throwing around in-between explaining the main outside riff!). One, potentially obvious, question: which key are you talking about when you say the riff is in E - E minor? I ask because I tried using the riff when improvising over Lianne La Havas' new song Bittersweet - which I believe is in F minor - and when I tried to play the riff over the song (of course shifted up a fret so it's in an F minor key) it sounded... wrong. Is there a theory-based explanation for this?
Thanks so much for watching! This particular lick sounds best over a major tonality. The one thing you could try is relative major. If you're playing in F minor, then try to run the lick in Ab major. It would sound very altered but if you tweak the right notes it could work.
I just picked up the Demolition album. Great collection of ass-kickin' playing and songs. Get it, it's worth every penny if not 1/16th as much more! hehe. Great record. Curious Shawn, why did you choose to distro through bandcamp? I'm sure you made a conscious decision, would you be willing to elaborate? Also, BMI or ASCAP? if any?
Thanks so much for the kind words about that record. I used Bandcamp because it was just easier to get going and I liked the fact that the platform is more for the fans who would like to support the artist financially as apposed to just stream their music. I'm ASCAP right now.

Bought it. Love it.
@@tim9house Thanks Tim! Hope you're doing well!
Got it and it sounds Great! And thanks for the New Lesson!
Keep em Coming!
Hi! Do you plan on using streaming services like Spotify as well in the future? I have no idea on the trade off for you, but it’s so accessible nowadays, it just made me curious.
@@shinjial I may in the future. Thanks for the question!
Literally even the way you just play the straight blues scale is cool haha. Amazing man!
Right? There's so much nuance in every note. It's really difficult to copy.
Thanks, Robert!! Hope you're doing good man.
it's clear ! I see that we follow the same good guitarists Rob ! ;)
That was exactly what I was looking for - to get inside the theory of your playing instead of copying the licks! Thanks Papa Tubbs you're the best!
I have never been so stoked for a new video! Shawn I can't tell you enough how awesome this is! Since I first heard you play you have become my favorite guitar player. The outside stuff is refreshing to hear and learn thanks again
I would pay for a collection of these lessons. Thanks Shawn, you inspire me endlessly.
Thank you so much, Shawn, my wishes have come true !!
Great Video Shawn!!! Easy to grasp and very effective cool factor!!!!
Shawn you never cease to amaze; thank you for sharing your musical insights
Fantastic lesson. Been a fan of your outside playing great to be able to see how you develop these lines. Keep posting this stuff, it’s awesome.

Thank you so much for these awesome lessons! Great playing Sean.
Have it! Been listening to it.

Love this! Thanks Shawn!
I'm realizing how important phrasing is on a lick like this... very cool cheers
Thanks so much, can use several parts of this to tie into my stuff. Great lesson, once again.
Fantastic! Thank you. I need this stuff.
So cool! More like this Shawn

Cool! Happy to see another video on this. It sounds super weird and cool. Seems to me it would need to go back inside so the listener can readjust.
love it!!!
Hey Shawn, great vid and playing! Bought your album from iTunes and love it, would be awesome to see a breakdown of some kicks from Desert Drift!
Thanks so much!! I'm working on a package with SoundSlice that covers a lot of that album.
Shawn Tubbs certainly looking forward to that!!🤘
some outside riffage from the master! I'll take all the tubbs chops you wanna give.
thanks coach ;)
Great as always Shawn! :)

I think this lick is a mixofreudian hydrolydian sine truncated rhombohedron or an icosidodecahedron. Either way its pretty cool.
No, it just half caffeinated. ;) Thanks for watching!
Coffee mixed with rocket fuel. :) Thanks for sharing!@@ShawnTubbs

I would tend to lean toward the idea of playing it over the 1 chord. That riff would work nicely from the 1 to the 4 chords.

Wicked lick! But is that the new Suhr Reactive Load IR you're playing thru? And can we expect a demo? Can we, please?
Hope to demo the Suhr Reactive Load IR soon!
Gonna throw this in one of my solos in the Wedding band that I play folks gonna be like "what the hell he's doing"
Pedro Ivo Tavares de Freitas that would be awesome during September by Earth Wind and Fire!
Great content! Sub'd
what kind of p 90's are those? are they hum canceling?
Those are Friedman P90 pickups. They're not hum canceling, I just turned out of it. Thanks for watching!
No, but it's rocket surgery!
Kinda lost me on this one.
