Weirdly I found myself enjoying part 1 a lot more as a manga. The anime adaptation had some growing pains and they seemed to be rushing to get to part 2 at times. Araki didn’t truly come out in full form until part 3 in my opinion, but this was a solid and well constructed read.
Im not sure which I enjoy more but I like both a ton, maybe in hindsight the anime might rush some bits since ive heard it doesn't adapt some bit but I haven't watched in a long while! Im excited to re-read everything to talk about again since I love Araki's development.
The first time I read part 1 was before I watched the anime (think I started getting into the series when Part 4 was being animated but had a interest in it going back to the Capcom arcade game in the 90s) and at the time felt it dragged a bit but on rereads improved. The first two parts (one especially) had an interesting horror vibe that didn't really carry forward a ton and I think that helps set it apart. Given how drastically the series has changed over the years it's still neat to see how they all manage to have their own unique feel despite some core elements staying the same.
NO JOKE! I've literally just re-watched Episodes 3 & 4 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Pt.1 today on Netflix with my Mom being present and being intrigued by how outlandish it was. Jojo is easily among my favorite Manga series of all time and I can't wait to see you talk more about it in future parts
The roster talk segment was a great addition to this series, it gives so much more context to what was actually happening in the magazine. Some mangas were added so long ago that we, viewers, forget about them but they're going strong in the magazine occupying a place there. Also helps to understand the themes that were popular back to these years. Can't wait for more of these videos, but do take your time researching cause it's worth!
Thank you glad your enjoying it! And I agree its a lot of fun to see how things change especially if theres any popular themes or trends at certain times!
Jojo is one of those classics I don't think I'll ever not be fascinated with. I remember in middle school the Capcom fighting game came out and I was completely enthralled with it's weirdness but only knew about what the game presented and that it was a long running series in Japan. In 2005 I imported Jump Super Stars on DS (one of my favorite games ever, with it's follow up being just incredible) and it featuring Jotaro and Dio reminded me to eventually look deeper into the franchise. Also included a few Steel Ball Run characters as it came out during that brief time it was running in Jump before Araki changed to a monthly schedule. I remember someone on an online forum in the early 2010s giving a play by play of their experience reading Part 4 and it sound totally off the wall. Come 2016 when I finally bought myself a tablet I read pretty much every part in a huge binge that went on for a few months, Part 4 being read while I was on a camping trip and providing some great memories. Very much want to check out God Sider as you really sold that concept well. All in all this year seems to have had a lot of interesting stuff that didn't stick around quite long enough. Still giving them a little spotlight years later is appreciated and got me interested for sure.
On the eastern monday of the year 2000 i casually turned on my grandparents tv. I was watching the anime lineup of german television consisting of Sailor Moon, Pokemon and DB. On this day Episode 102 of DB premiered and it somewhat changed my life. Seeing the corpse of poor Krillin shacked me to my core. I needed to know how things will turn out asap (this was at a time where the Internet was not a common thing in every household). So the next day I took my pocket money and bought the first manga in my lifetime, just to ashure the little baldie won't be dead for good. This started a huge passion going on tiĺl this day
This series is so fun to watch! What makes manga medium exciting to me is how much of it is still unexplored unlike other mediums. It’s always fun to see you talking about some manga and my reaction be like “Wow I never saw this manga before”
Phantom blood manga was so fun to read through, enjoyed it more than the anime, i wouldve totally said jojo was one single series until the end of part 5 btw, but at least if you divide it by parts you can mention its progress on next videos more naturally... I love the fortuneteller baba section of dragon ball, very underrated, great conclusion to the red ribbon storyline that had been so long, i remember crying when i saw goku see gohan again haha. The 22nd budokai is also extremely underrated, goku vs tenshinhan is amazing and so tense, also love the ending going immediately to the piccolo arc Btw a lot of these manga that you mention have really cute art styles, too bad they are either axed really quickly or untranslated lol
Yeah tons of fun stuff this year, I think for me Jojo is one big story and also separate parts, but ill be splitting them up quite a bit since im a big fan anyway and want to talk about more jojo haha! Baba and the 22nd Budokai might be some of my favourite dragonball in hindsight, very fun to re-read! Im excited for whats the come though. And yeah so many of these cancelled manga have amazing artstyles, its a shame they arent translated but id love to make a push for some of them to be one day!
Just wanted to say this is some of the BEST content I've ever seen on UA-cam. As someone who loves Weekly Shonen Jump, it's so interesting to see it covered in this much detail. Excited to see what comes next!
Thank you! I love Jump a ton so I just want to make cool vids! The next history one might take some time since 1988 is a HUGE year haha but I'm excited for it!
@@TrentinArt I did have a question: Do you ever plan on talking about the Shonen Jump crossover games? I feel like Famicom Jump is a pretty big milestone for the magazine, especially when you have prior knowledge of the included series, and we’re coming up on its release date of 1989
Yep!! I want to talk about the Jump games when they pop up!! I might try to talk about some foreign versions of the magazine too like the US one and Formosa youth, theres definitely a few more too!
Did not know God Sider had an English translation First found out about the manga thanks to its protagonist being featured in Famicom Jump as a playable character, even tho the manga itself never received an anime or live-action adaptation to my knowledge
Akira Toriyama was influenced by Yoichiro Minami, which is why he must’ve read a lot of books about stock shonen heroes who were cliche stormy even for their time. Then he topped them all with Goku influencing generations of stock shonen heroes for decades.
Had just gotten up to this little series and not going to lie, it has been very intriguing to hear about the history of the magazine. I recently decided to revisit part 1 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (mostly because it had been about a decade since I got introduced to the series) and it's been a nice experience. Though this time I liked it a lot more and the core of part 1 was very strong. God Sider does sound like it will be my thing so i'll give it a read sometime
My first exposure to JoJos bizzare adventure was with the anime I remember watching part 1 and part 2 I’ve read part 1 with those brilliant hardcover volumes hope to start part 2 sometime
I love Phantom Blood. The anime was great for what it was, but it's a veeeeery light adaptation when compared with the manga and all the stuff and scenes from it that it left out, as well as the details that it changed for no reason but that added layers to the characters. Like how manga Jonathan shows up to his school lessons in overalls and looking like some random commoner, while Dio shows up properly dressed -button up shirt with tie and all and appearing like a real aristocrat, even though it should have been the other way around. All that "missed contect" is essentially the main reason why a lot of Jojo fans overlook PB and Jonathan too, claiming that it's "plain" or even "boring", since the anime really stripped characters of some of their layers personality-wise, some of which made them more relatable and dear to the audience. Like Jonathan's chocolate scene, ie, or Speedwagon doing some Victorian parkour in order to break into the hospital to see Jonathan and hold his hand, or Zeppeli's stories from his many travels in the past. Heck, even Jonathan's backstory with Danny was ommitted (and which in turn kinda waters down the negative impact Danny's death had on Jonathan), or those different moments we see Dio "bonding" with George and how he won him over the years for his own gain and solidifying his "golden child" image he had built with him. It's no news that a lot of fans will only consume the anime and not the manga, and so they stick with the incomplete image the anime gives. I love anime PB, but I really wish DavidPro would have put in PB the same love and effort, and even extra scenes, they put into later parts as well.
I still really like the adaptation, the music, voices and general aesthetic are great but yeah after reading the PB manga for the first time i was a tad disappointed due to some of the scenes omitted since they help round out Jonathan a bit
@@TrentinArt Oh, same tbh. I still love PB anime despite its shortcomings and its still my fave Jojo part so far (manga and anime). The voice choices were great, and I recall reading somewhere they really worked hard casting them and finding the right ones and re-recording lines every time they felt they could be better, plus every seiyuu did a great job with their lines, and they have even mentioned in Jojo shows just how intense the recording sessions always were due to everyone pouring their hearts into their performances, and it definitely shows in the final product. The visuals were also amazing as well as the music (BGM as well as Opening and Ending), and I really like how they incorporated some stuff in regards to aesthetics and color palettes, and how despite the anime art being different from Araki's, it still keeps that unmistakable "Jojo essence" to it. There was a ton of work and effort put into anime PB, no doubts about it, it's just that overall it feels kinda rushed at times like they wanted to get to Part 2 asap, which is really a shame cause the manga itself isn't even that long. PB anime could have been much better than it already is.
I love Jojo, but there is something tragic about Koji Maki being told "it's either you or Araki". The fact he was able to continue Godsider later in his career is fortunate, at least. I may very well check it out thanks to this vid, I just have to make sure not to compare it directly with Jojo too much.
It is pretty sad yeah, which is what Series Axed! delves into a bit! The two definitely have similar traits but are completely different mostly imo, its just the fact that they popped up at the same time in the same magazine which aids in the comparisons and competition between them.
Finally time to my all time favorite manga of Shueisha and manga in general: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Created by my role model mangaka Araki Hirohiko sensei

My 2nd favourite manga series of all time and probably in the minority here, but I love the JoJo manga more than the anime also such great music in this one
I think I like the manga a bit more but both have a lot of different things to offer, I also pulled out some of the phantom blood music for this one since I know some Jojo youtubers use the ost so i think its okay
JoJo is a series I've had a very rocky relationship with, i initially got into it around Part 1s release where i watched it, sort of enjoyed it, then didn't hear anything about it and completely forgot about it until part 4 was releasing and got back into it and it became one of my all time favorites as i hopped on the JoJo fandom bandwagon reading all the way up to the part 7 manga, i later came to go off the series a little bit and developed a distaste for the fandom, i really don't like the whole fandom hating fandom, in my opinion even the most despised fandoms are funny weird at worst and i have often defended them while discussing imthe topic with others, but JoJo fans often just aren't likable to me idk why, the series is still great, it has went from "My new favorite series" to like maybe around my 10th favorite Jump battle manga though.
Theres definitely some bad eggs in the JoJo fandom or just annoying people but usually when i meet a jojo fan i have a lot of fun discussing with them.
