Ahaha timing-wise I didn't have much control as I've been making 1 history vid a month for a while. Although it is Toriyamas birthday today which is a fun coincidence!
Hello DB indeed, plus Kimagure Orange Road came out in the same year holy crap that's wicked sick plus me thinking about Dragon Ball from now on has such a different meaning and emotion behind it for the best
No comments about how great kurumada is... he's absolutely amazing. His art and style is just so fantastic. I can't wait for otoko zaka (mens hill) to conclude this year
The only rom com manga I've really gotten into was Kaguya-sama which I felt mixed up the status quo enough to avoid wearing thin. This was the year I was born so was always easy to remember it's when Dragon Ball premiered. Such an incredible series for multiple reasons but what really makes me list it among my favorites is the art, how it embodies adventure so so well. The plot goes back and forth and the world building is interesting but understated but I always loved how Toriyama would make you feel as if it's a setting where something interesting is around every corner. Not to mention the really fun title pages that let him show off his passion for motor vehicles of all sorts and some killer clothing choices for the cast. Very much agree on Tottemo Shounen Tankentai sounding like a fun read, I'm a sucker for that kind of thing. Same with Gakuen and that art does absolutely pop along with what sounds like a fun premise (doesn't hurt I enjoy a good ecchi series here and there).
Its on the very last page so sewing everyone grown up with children is really sweet I think. It's like Toriyama I'd showing you everyone is happy even if you can't read more
@@TrentinArt Orange Road may be my favorite series, but honestly I think you were EASY on it with just how dated the series is. Like, even beyond Hikaru's treatment, it ignores the things that'd make it controversial in Japan [the series has not been reaired for a long time because of how much underage drinking is in the series] and would be more controversial in the US [even adjusting for shonen romcom logic, Kyousuke does things to Madoka that would count as SA in the US at least three times in the course of the series.]
@@amm2media472 I don't know- I think the way the anime was ended up a little bit better. The anime was pretty close to the manga, with the anime-exclusive episodes adding a bit more action or balls-out comedy to the mix. The anime giving Hatta a big role immediately added more comedy to the mix early, but the manga-exclusive characters were...kind of mediocre actually [the new guy who crushed on Hikaru was literally doing the same stuff Yusaku did, the former classmate of Kyousuke's was only important for one episode, and the girl trying to get Kyousuke was basically superfluous for the story when it was clear Kyousuke chose in his heart and you couldn't get even one good episode of hi considering her.]
Your videos are invaluable for everyone who wants to know the history of the Japanese mangas that we all love. To me, living in Italy also helps to put into perspective some information that is polluted by the history of manga publishing here. As an example, we read Baoh MUCH later than seeing Dragonball anime on TV, so for us, Baoh was "new" while Dragonball was "old", so I never imagined that actually Baoh was published in the same year as DB! Also, we in Italy think of Kurumada as a mangaka who had his "stroke of luck" being put on the Saint Seiya project, while from your videos, I have discovered that he is a pillar of battle shonen mangas! Thanks for all your research!
Thank you, I'm glad your getting so much out of it! It's fun to see where each manga debut timeline-wise since some might be much older or younger than you think! And yeah discovering things like Masumi Kurumada being so pivotal to the magazine has been really interesting!
This is the first video I saw of yours. I just finished watching all of the other history videos. Thank you for this series, it’s excellent! Rest in peace to the absolute god Akira Toriyama
Dragon ball was an amazing manga that changed shonen jump in a wonderful way. For it would lead the way for such amazing titles like Sporting Salt to change the world by storm.
So technically Saint suitable came out in Issue 1 of 1986, so I'll be talking about it front and centre in the 1986 video! Jump usually begins it's year in December of the previous one so it can get a bit confusing but that's what I've been following for these videos
Kimagure Orange Road is much better written compared to Rent A Girlfriend. Hell, Kyosuke Kasuga is a much more interesting romance comedy protagonist compared to Kazuya Kinoshita.
I do read some Sunday and WSM manga but Jump is just wayyy more accessible and I'm so invested already. Plus this series needs a ton of research, if I did the same for the other magazines I'd stretch myself too thin, but maybe in the future I'll look into other magazines more
Rest in peace Izumi Matsumoto
Well timed after a resurgence in Dragon Ball recently from my favourite YT channel! R.I.P. Akira Toriyama
Ahaha timing-wise I didn't have much control as I've been making 1 history vid a month for a while. Although it is Toriyamas birthday today which is a fun coincidence!
Bulma driving a Renault 5 Turbo is something I was not expecting to see
Kimagure Orange Road mentioned!!!!
Hello DB indeed, plus Kimagure Orange Road came out in the same year holy crap that's wicked sick plus me thinking about Dragon Ball from now on has such a different meaning and emotion behind it for the best
Yeah it does, I'm happy there's a lot of positive talk around DB and Toriyama though, it's nice!
I had it in my head that the Dragon Ball manga dropped in 1985 honestly so this is a pretty nice surprise
It's like issue 51 of 1984 I think so very late in the year so I can see why
Dragon Ball is finally here 🔥
Yep yep yep!!! Dragonball is here to stay!
literally 1984
Literally!!
26:50 Ah yes, who could forget the best arc in Dragonball? The Fuller arc!
So Orange Road was basically Japanese Archie/Betty and Veronica. Neat
Kinda yeah!
No comments about how great kurumada is... he's absolutely amazing. His art and style is just so fantastic. I can't wait for otoko zaka (mens hill) to conclude this year
Maybe when we get to Saint Seiya a couple videos down the line people will come out of the woodwork haha,!
Didn’t Otoko Zaka (Mens Hill) has already ended in 2023?

29:16 I love this page color, they remembering me something. I can't to describe.

It's so nice listening to you, like it's a chill vibes. This series is slowly becoming my fav series on YT
Thank you! Glad it's chill because that's definitely what I'm going for
I just found your channel and I already love how you structured this series
Glad you do!! Hope you Enjoy the vids
The birth of the series that inspired a whole new generation of Shonen Jump artists. Dragon Ball by the late Akira Toriyama.
The anime for Kimagaure diverges from the manga and does its own thing from what I hear
I really look forward to these and the axe file videos. Good stuff once again bud
Glad you do! Lots more to come!
I LOVE ORANGE ROAD!!
Glad it has fans!
@@TrentinArt I pray we get a manga faithful adaptation of it someday

I'm glad your enjoying them!!! I'm happily going to cover dragonball as faithfully as I can to interweave his legacy into these videos
It’s interesting to see what series came before compared to now.
It is! I love researching and sharing what I find a ton!
I loved the arc where Goku saved the world from the big brothers of INGSOC.
Dragon ball was an amazing manga that changed shonen jump in a wonderful way. For it would lead the way for such amazing titles like Sporting Salt to change the world by storm.
Idk we can forget about that one 😬
RIP Akira Toriyama dragon ball is amazing and I’m starting to read the whole series.
By the way is 1985 going to have Saint Seiya as the main focus?
So technically Saint suitable came out in Issue 1 of 1986, so I'll be talking about it front and centre in the 1986 video!

@@TrentinArt that’s fine by me, this year 1983 and 1986 are my favourite years since the main 3 shonen jump series were featured.
14:19 11 volumes lol
Yeahh woopsie despite checking the vid over multiple times things get by me 😅
Bragon Dall !
14:26 why did they even greenlit it?!!! 🤒😭
Nooo idea, George Akiyama was wild and he kept getting published somehow
Kimagure Orange Road is much better written compared to Rent A Girlfriend. Hell, Kyosuke Kasuga is a much more interesting romance comedy protagonist compared to Kazuya Kinoshita.
I'm not sure Rent a GF is a very high bar to be fair haha
Is there a reason why you don't cover Weekly Shonen Sunday or Weekly Shonen Magazine?

Great history lessons! Thank you for educating us about Shonen Jump's past!
Love orange road watch 5x
