Minimalism: The new poverty or the new pretension. I don’t care. Minimalist living brings me a sense of calm in a noisy and cluttered world. I have what I need and this is what I want. This lifestyle is my medicine. But everyone has their own “flavor” of minimalism and I enjoy having a “taste” of how they think. Your channel is soothing. I like the simple affluence of your home. I like how you think. Thank you for sharing your lives, in spite of the glaring eyes of strangers who don’t approve.

    Loved your definition of minimalism.
Your statement about "do I really love luxury cars or do I care more about what people would think if I didn't own a luxury car?" was incredibly profound.

This was one of your best videos. I don’t think you need to justify your way of minimalism but I did enjoy hearing your views on it. I’m a firm believer that imposing limitations and constraints on yourself forces you to make deliberate decisions on what’s important in your life. Once you know what is, then you can remove those barriers or “white noise” and spend your time and energy pursing what you think is important rather than attempting to be successful in the eyes of others.

Whenever you choose an alternative way of life, a lot of people attack your decision. Reasons are multiple but not easy to explain in few words. I'll summarize it in "they are attacking themselves and their frustration through you". The foundation of our modern society is compete to gain more, have more and (the most important thing for our system) produce more. A lot of people is really unhappy with this way of life but has no enough knowledge, willpower, or fearless to take the steps needed to achieve their hapiness. The fact of see how other people do it (or try it at least), angry them, remember them their limitations, their frustrations. The key of minimalism (and other ways of thinking) is that puts to you a firm conviction about what you are doing and why you are doing. It gets you confidence.

My girlfriend and I just found out we got the BTO we wanted and it genuinely feels like a dream come true and I hope 3 years later we still remember to be intentional about our purchases (a necessity considering our budget) instead of blindly following home design conventions.

We adopted a minimal lifestyle a few years ago after selling everything to hike the Appalachian Trail. We love it for many reasons. Allows us to be more mobile, we can pick up and move to a new state or a new city far easier. Allows us to focus more on our interests/hobbies. Even in a small space we have more space. It's far less expensive to be minimal so our money can go towards what we love to do. I recommend everyone try to live with a little less. It's shown us just how hyper our consumer culture truly is.

Started my journey on minimalism since one year plus back when the lockdown first started, but I am still no way near being a "minimalist", and there were times I felt stressed because I wasn't minimalist enough! Later on I realised that minimalism isn't about how little things we have, and just like what u said, it is a process & mindset. Subbed your channel many months ago and I felt sooo inspired by your house & your videos cinematography is sooo soothing! No matter how good you/we are, there will always be haters, ignore them! and keep up the good work! you have inspired so many of us...and after watching this video, I feel more inspired to stop procrastinating my 2021 断舍离 (declutter) lol.
I hope you can make a video on "new year spring cleaning" but ur house got nothing much left to declutter hahaha. it will be super fun if we could see you guys help your fam/friend to declutter! just a suggestion, and Happy New Year in advance!♡♡♡♡♡

Hi, I actually admire you both, rarely in Asia that couples can co-exist together and share the same ideas of minimalism, after following your channel, I strive to be buy less and be more like you both. Unfortuanately my wife is a horder and keeps lots of useless stuff, clothes which no longer fit etc. I currently live in Hong Kong,, just recently I watched some people moving out of their houses, the amount of stuff that they collected is scary. As always old stuff is thrown away so new items are purchased when they move into their new home. ALways a pleasure to see new content.

the point is, to minimalise all the stuff, from which we think, this could make us happy, brings to reality, which is good. to have lot things make our mind sticky to them, you dont have time for your self and free room in and out you. Better have clear air, clear water, clear room, clear dresses, clear friends. thats enough.

  • @thewobblyninja
    @thewobblyninja 2 роки тому +2

Agreed. Many still misunderstand minimalism as simply having less stuff. I tried to use "intentional living" instead in convo with others. But personally, the more I learn about minimalism/intentional living, the more it change my life, and not only in sense of belongings, but in relationship, entrepreneurship and many other aspects as well. But I'm still in my early journey, we'll see in a few years or so. Keep it up guys, your content are great, as long as you passionate and stay true to it.

It's a hard journey to learn how to stop caring about what others think about us and focus more on what we think about ourselves and how we see ourselves living our lives! It takes a lot of will power to focus inwards and to not be affected drastically about the constantly changing outside world which is full of distractions and materialistic greed.

Too you people who worry about what others think, but are on the minimalism path. My advice to you is to start the next step. That is stoicism and zen. You can`t controll others minds or emotions. We have influence over our own minds/emotions, but we don`t have 100% controll. Only over our own attitude, and how we " react" to the events of life and our own emotions ( stoicism).
Start to declutter your worry of what your fear others are thinking/feeling out of your life today!

For me, less is more. Less frivolities in life, more peace of mind, freedom and probably inner joy. These material things come and go. Our lives come and go. What matter most are the lessons learned from our life experiences. Naked we come forth in this world, naked will we depart.

for me it’s just about rethinking what the “essentials” are and what is actually essential in my life. Every time you go out to buy “essentials”, really ask yourself if they are really important to you, if you really want them, rather than assuming you need them. For example, modern culture tells us that a couch is essential for a home. I took the time to rethink that and realized that not only are they not essential, they’re bulky and uncomfortable and not a good fit for my home.

Money buys financial freedom. Keep making money but don't upgrade your lifestyle. Once your basic needs are met money won't make you happy, then the point of money is to turn it into more money. If you are internally happy you won't WANT what other people have.
It's feels better to know you can afford a fancy car than the feeling of actually buying the car.

I enjoy your interpretation. And your practicing of it seems very authentic. But Idk that I agree with its classification as a form of design. As many people do.
Luxury is something rich people have and poorer people emulate. Minimalism is something poor people have and the rich often emulate as an escape. It’s not as though it’s anti- capitalism in nature. Rather a redistribution of capital to materials or activities deemed worthy. The artwork, chairs, couches, tables, etc depicted in “minimalist” housing are often multiple times more expensive than high end furniture at any given shop. More often than not it’s wealth in disguise which is why it’s largely considered pompous.
Victorian era homes are often extremely expensive but that’s the style. Victorian. Not “luxury.” The traditional rural Japanese homes are minimalist as far items but maintain their own flavor and personality. That makes them unique and aesthetically appealing. You don’t feel the same sort of “soullessness” which is really saying it lacks personality and familiarity. Uninviting.
Minimalism should be about conserving money not an expensive design choice.

There’s voluntary minimalism , and there’s forced minimalism we live in a country of abundance so it’s easy to make that choice, we can always go back to our old ways. But if say you lived in a communist country where everything is scarce then it’s not the same. Those people would trade places with you in a heart beat. It’s like fasting voluntarily or starving for lack of food. Just my thoughts.

As defined in minimalism's (Simple Living) wiki page, "Simple living is distinct from those living in forced poverty, as it is a voluntary lifestyle choice." So I guess "forced minimalism" shouldn't really be considered minimalism, but I get what you mean. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙌🏻

    • @findelka1810

I grew up in communism so I can relate. I’ve had a scarcity complex. It took me a decade of hoarding and buying everything I felt I couldn’t have before to arrive to a turning point when stuff started to suffocate me. It took me 3+ years to declutter 90% of my possessions. Now I’ve come full circle and can be a minimalist, with relatively few possessions. But boy, it was quite a journey!
