    It's funny to me to read some of the more negative comments, and how sitting on the floor isn't good for you. Humans survived thousands of years without furniture. Personally, I was getting less flexible and strong as the years went by, and started doing less and less. Then I took a full year and started sleeping on the floor, sitting on the floor, and doing things the more natural way, rather than the lazy American way. At 58, I am now far more flexible than I was in my 20's and I sleep better too. I can touch my hands flat on the ground, (something my son can't do) and can do a deep squat with no problems, and I no longer have back pain. Oh....and before I did this, I consulted my doctor, who had me on pain meds for my many aches and pains, who told me that doing this was going to hurt me. The only thing that hurt me, was listening to the doctor.

      Thank you so much for this post! I'm roughly the same age and looking at ways to get back on the floor. I'm not really sure when I stopped doing that and I was so shocked a couple of years ago to discover how stiff and inabled I had become!
      A couple of years ago I opted for a low bed mattress on the floor, as I recall) but gave it up because it was too much of a challenge to get in and out of. Also, I felt so rickety but even once I got upright I wasn't convinced I wouldn't fall over!
      Do you have any tips for transitioning back to sitting on the floor or sleeping on the floor (as a teenager, for a few years I opted to sleep on the floor)? I've been trying to find some decent cushioning for sitting. Only because if I sit on a hard surface at triggers my sciatica... maybe with any luck it will go away as I become more agile.

      I do agree with this comment, but in such questions, there is a line where the "item is just a modern day luxury" and a necessity lack of which might reduce your life span by some years. Slowly making the transition to move away from a desk setup. I am currently under 20s so this might be an easier or an harder shift for me, depends

    as a physiotherapist, what you are doing is so good for your body. Not only will this reduce the muscle aches and pains a lot of people get from sitting in a prolonged position, but you're also reducing the likelihood of getting diabetes and heart disease with your frequent position changes. Great work!!

    8 years ago when I was single, I moved to a different city. I got rid of all my furniture: my desk and chair, couches, and bed-frames. Knowing that I would be moving again, I avoided buying any big furniture.
    I had a foam mattress which I'd drop on the floor and sleep on at night. During the day, I would sit on the mattress with my back against the floor when I was on my laptop. I ended up living that way for the next 3 years.
    I am married and we have a child and own our home with all kinds of furniture but, I never got a around to buying a proper office desk and chair yet. I will soon have a room in the house that will be my office. However, now, I have second thoughts about getting any furniture for it.
    I searched for ideas and and I found your video. I think I am quite convinced I should go back to sitting on the floor. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

      I feel like healthy minimal sitting is a good way to combat overwork culture too. With more people working from home due to the Coronavirus, I hope people will intuitively realize that, if you can't sit up anymore cross legged with maybe a pillow or two at your coffee table, or have to be propped up by an office chair and arm rests, then it's probably time to go to bed.

    I LOVE sitting on the floor. I was homeschooled up until college, so I wasn't forced to sit in chairs all day long -- I think that's contributed to my deep comfort with not using chairs. Quarantine has been a great time to spend more time on the floor, as I definitely don't get to do that at work normally.

  • @TheGamingDandy
    @TheGamingDandy 4 роки тому +49

    Absolutely, sitting on the floor is the way to go. We tend to forget sometimes that we humans are still animals. We evolved all the tools we need to function. Which includes the ability to sit wherever we are. Human beings didn't come into existence with high chairs and tables. Sitting on the ground is our natural way of resting. Unless you have a severe disability or injury that prevents you from doing so, I would recommend it to anybody.

Needed one foot on the floor for balance and such. My couch is just an elevated floor area. So when it came to finding a desk I decided to build one for the floor. I searched UA-cam for suggestions to build this floor desk and came across this video. Couldn’t agree more!

    Thanks you! You’ve just saved me hours and hours of research to compare if sitting in the floor is better or not. I did not have a desk in my childhood or teen years, we played and did art on the floor at home, so sitting in the ground feels more natural to me. Although because I am now a-custom to sitting at a desk from work and study culture…. I find myself doing and swapping with both styles (even on the couch)… because no matter where I sit, I have to switch positions at least every half and hour or so. Thanks again ☀️

    This actually made me notice something funny. For most of 2019 I was sitting on the floor, using a coffee table while on my computer, and while it was kinda uncomfortable, and I moved around alot to adjust pressure points, I was generally more productive, and felt better. However I got a desk/chair in early 2020, and productivity has generally went down.
    However back then I was also eating better, and did some exercise, so that likely had a large role too. so cant really say for certain, just something Im gonna keep in mind.

None of my familiy members or my friends could image doing that, therefore I don't really have a choice, because it surely would look weird to eat on the floor all by myself while everyone else is eating at the table 😂 Also I don't want to sleep sleep alone on the floor, while my wife and my kids are sleeping somewhere else.

      In Germany, do slightly larger Gatherings sometimes have a "kids' table"? 😀 I'm in Canada, and we used to hate that as kids.. that at some get-togethers the adults would sit at the regular table and the kids had to go sit at the smaller one... It was always really annoying when you got older and you still had to sit with the little kids lol
      Hiwever, maybe there's a way you / we can incorporate that idea? Whether Separate Tables or something else.
      In one's own home, if one knew how or could hire somebody, to design and build a large elevated surface ( essentially a raised floor) that we could sit on, but bring ourselves to the same level as a regular table?

When I do sit in a chair, I am immediately driven to lift my legs up close to my body to mimic a floor-sitting position. People do think it's weird, but I don't like chairs and I refuse to pretend otherwise. I simply feel better on the floor.

    The idea of the sit/stand desk was taken from this theory. We should not stay in this tight positions for too long. I wish the sit/stand desks went down to the ground like this - they would be a gamechanger. ALSO - I practice this with my mattress as I am a strong believer that box springs/platform boards or any other raised surface has deflection that translates up to your back. A lot of people complain about getting in and out of the bed from this level which is understandable for some. For others that are physically able it seems to mostly comes off as annoying which also reflects the lack of mobility they practice in their own life. But think about this - When you get out of bed from a raised bed you essentially turn, sit-up and move your legs out into a seated position and stand. When you get out of bed from it being on the floor you have to either use all of your limbs, turn 180 degrees facing down to get to a hands and knees position (also helps your organs turn and tumble a bit which can help for morning BM), then one leg up at a time which is going to require you to crunch a little and stretch your groin a bit. In some cases you can turn hands and knees and tilt back to a dip squat and stand up. You are also putting a lot more compression on your limbs which some can argue is not wanted but this isn't sports, this is getting out of bed lol. One thing for sure is your brain will be programmed to be more enthusiastic in getting up bc you have to and its better to as opposed to "dragging" yourself out of bed from a ground position. I can keep writing more and more but I think I made my point.

    I moved to a new apt and needed space for my yoga mat. After I put my yoga mat down in my empty apt. I sat down on my mat and looked around. I decided to go a week without furniture. I loved it. And decided to live without furniture. I sat on my mat for all my meals. I lay on my tummy to work my laptop. I rolled around and stood up from the floor. What freedom.
    I have a bed but nap on my mat on the floor. I have a pillow and blanket folded by my mat. I bought a couple of chairs for visitors. It is a new uncluttered and healthy way of living.
    I am 70 years old and it was 4 years ago I decided to go minimalist. Other than my 3 times a week yoga on my mat I had never actually sat on the floor. My body is more flexible than it ever was and I can sit and stand up with ease ...what a life changer...

Working on the floor is the best and I'd stand by it (not literally, lol).

    This video had me stretching an squatting as I watched. When I had floor furniture (living room and bedroom) I felt like my digestion improved and sitting and standing always felt like more of a full body relief than the weird half extension feeling you get from sitting at a normal height. Like, it just makes you more aware and it's the least you can do. Of course, I've found having a mix of furniture at different heights affects how comfortable I feel sitting. When I had only my bedroom with low profile furniture I enjoyed sitting on the floor much more than when I mixed in taller shelves, bureaus, etc.

    I love sitting / working / sleeping on the floor. It made me more flexible and my family finds it weird on how my legs are folded on 2 different directions (like an inverted W) while sitting down. Now that I'm working from home, I also invested on standing desk since it's hard to move around a heavy PC 😂.

    I've been floor-sitting for about half a year now and it's nice to see other locals who do the same. I decided to make the switch from desk to floor because I do a lot of craftwork and sewing, and I find that sprawling out all my materials onto the floor was much easier than trying to cram everything onto my desk or have things half falling off, so I was always on the floor anyway. When I decided to make the switch, my parents would say things like how the floor is cold and would affect my legs, or how my knees would be affected by the amount of standing and going down I would need to do. But honestly, my legs have never felt better :)
    At first, it actually took some conscious effort to get up but now it's super easy. During the colder months I just lay an old coat on the floor so that it's not as chilly. If I've been sitting for too long, I can do some pushups very easily cus I'm already on the floor. Even better, if I'm watching a show just plank all the way 😂 So like both of you, I've found benefits to floor sitting compared to sitting on a regular chair. It's really about finding what works best for each individual.

    This hit me straight on the nose, haha. I left a family biz, almost 3 years ago. I then went into a computer, not my norm, I came up always on my feet, working in Food n bev./nightclub/Bar industries. But for my new venture I had a ton of research and learning to do. Which has put me in the place I find me in currently. I have gone through MANY chairs for when I have to climb into the computer. Many were put together with various objects, some were, check that, many were bought, and some were found while driving or dumpster diving(you have know Idea what can be found in dumpsters, haha(or maybe there are a lucky few whom do know).
    Long story too long, I have been playing around with this floor seating, and once actually thinking about it, is not new for me. This video has confirmed a lot of my thoughts. The one hesitation is if I have a client visit, which really is not a problem, hence the sculpture of chairs I have collected, haha.
    I too have had numerous body injuries and it was a concern, which got me thinking of the floor. Im also very figidity, you should see the numerous things to touch and play with while working, then again, when on the phone I am a "pacer" like the gentleman in the vid.
    Anyway, great vid, and thank you for confirming my thoughts. Blessings.

    I have recurring sciatica and the only thing that keeps the pain away is using a floor desk. After 3-4 days of sitting in an office desk chair ( I've tried many types of chairs) the pain comes back and I can no longer wash my feet in the shower, load the bottom shelf of the dishwasher, or wash my face without bracing my forearms on the basin.
    It's not as comfortable as sitting in a chair because your butt goes numb and you have to make small adjustments to your position every hour or so, but it's 100% worth it to be pain free, and able to wash your feet. Floor desks all the way. Now all i need is underfloor heating in the winter!

      😂 Yea, we've watched that video (probably watched most videos on the "Asian Squat"). I'm sure genetics play a small role, but cultural influences and habits are still the biggest factors. • @zengakix
      @zengakix 5 років тому +51

      Well, I don't think ethnics have anything to do with squats. Every child can do it, look at them playing on the sand, their position. Just that if you continue to do that for the rest of your life that comes natural. But if you stop then of course you lose practice.
      In Japan most people sleep everyday on the floor, so squats at least twice a day, then to eat they sit on the floor so again depending how many times you eat sitting well that's the amount of squats you do per day, then another common thing is using the ofuro like a bathtub where they sit, again going down... so I think if anyone does this since childhood... well not a problem as an adult as there was no gap in time without practice

    • @Chris-oo7lr
      @Chris-oo7lr 5 років тому +36

      Actually, being able to deep squat has nothing to do with ethnicity since deep squatting (often called the Asian squat) is found everywhere in the world in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. So it could be renamed the “universal squat”. Not being able to deep squat has more to do with Western modern furniture (including toilets) and the habits that Western furniture gives bodies (as we can clearly see in your video). All babies and small children can and naturally will do deep squats. But even though virtually everyone is born with the mobility to deep squat, after years of only sitting on chairs and using Western toilets, the body gets used to this type of furniture, and it looses the natural body mobility that allows to deep squat.

    I grew up sitting on the floor nearly on a daily basis as a child and I never have any problems with them. It got to the point when I received a desk, I had a relative cut part of the legs to make a coffee table length and it didn't bother me in a slightest. My family does used normal tables and chairs for their health, but if I were to choose, I would choose sitting on the floor. Even when moving from house to house, our tables and chairs were packed but it didn't matter, we ate meals on a cardboard to prevent a mess on the carpet.
    I know that sitting on the floor sometimes lead to health problems for back and spine, especially for me. I love to draw so my art station is naturally at my desk on the floor, which I had to arch my spine from time to time. Luckily, I have a chair that I used to lean back and let my body rest every once a while. In some cases, I would simply lie down on the floor for more relaxation and it really helps. Even with bed, I don't have bed frames, just a firm mattress to crawl onto and then sleep.
    Sometimes I wished furniture makers built L-shaped desk that is made for floors (L-shaped coffee table, you know what I mean).😅

    Agreed. I struggle with sitting in chairs, couches, or beds for extended periods. Chairs, in particular, make me feel an uncomfortable, almost painful sensation that compels me to get off. So instead, I’ve taken to the floor-it’s infinitely more comfortable. There, I have lots of room to sit however I please, instead of being forced into the same old, same old. Not to mention, after sleeping on the floor recently, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in stiffness compared to when sleeping in my bed. I haven't noticed it before, but now I feel very stiff from cushion-sleeping. In general, I’m not a fan of furniture. Spending hundreds or even thousands on items like couches feels inconvenient. Why buy a 5000$ bed when you have the ground for free? Of course, everyone has their preferences, and I respect that. But overall, I’m aligned with your perspective.

      Thanks! I guess sitting on the floor just don't look "right" to people, which is why it's so rarely talked about 🤔

    I sit on an exercise ball instead of a conventional chair. It keeps me moving for the 10 hours a day I spend in front of a desk.

      Ha Mang Yes, when sitting, even on a regular chair, I my back and shoulders are straighter, and I think it also affected my posture when I am standing and my back pains are much less pronounced, but it could also be at least partly placebo, either way, I am not complaining about a positive affect.

    I've saved my back when I switched from a regular drafting table to a floor drafting table that I've made it by modifying a regular one. I had to cut off the legs of a chair too as such kind of low furniture is not available in my country. But ok.. with a saw and a bit of accurate measuring I've set up my custom floor desk.
    The advantage of sitting on the floor is that you can place your feet wherever it is more comfortable for you while you are working and along with your feet changes your torso's position. So your back is not always at the same position which is the reason why your back hurts when you work for several hours on a desk.

    I actually find it so uncomfortable to sit in a chair with my feet on the floor. I always either have my feet on the chair or just sit on the floor because it feels better to me personally.
