I actually grew up during that re-branding era of CN and watched both Unnatural History and TP and I was just waiting to see if you talked about either of them, so I'm deeply satisfied. I was apart of that female audience that loved Tower Prep and I even re-watched it earlier this year so it's really nice to see someone talk about it for a change, even just briefly. I was so upset when it got cancelled too cause it was on a cliffhanger and so we'll never find out how the series actually ended. Also, love the content, keep it up.
For real! I was to young to realize at the time. The simple fact that this CARTOON network was leaning heavily into live action TV was enough to turn me away. Glad I gave adventure time a chance back then though.
Another thing that wasn't mentioned in the video was the Aqua Teen Hunger Force bomb scare in Boston back in 2007. The CEO had to step down, which was another catalyst for the CN Dark Ages.

Adventure Time really saved CN when you think about it. As soon as it premiered in Spring of 2010, pretty much everything started to change for the better on the channel.
Yes i was surprised that he brought up steven universe because i see adventure time as the show that sort of started all those other cutesy cartoons with long term plot lines
@@beepboop756 Adventure time and Total drama island were carrying the network at the time, BUT niether ended the live action shows, because they were still making new live action shows and airing them when adventure time was airing. I dont think adventure time was in of itself enough to kill them off. I think, adventure time started a wave of serialized cartoons that were episodic with overarching plots; cartoons that gave you more as you kept watching. I think steven universe was the first notable example of the trend not including adventure time itself (and also it was absurdly popular when it aired and ground breaking in a lot of its own ways like adventure time). Almost immediately after steven universe most of the live action shows that hadnt already died were canceled. Adventure time deserves credit for keeping CN alive after the disaster that was 2008 CN, but Steven universe is the cartoon that killed off the live action shows.
Yeah, I was thinking the same! Almost every cartoon we can watch today at CN exist because of Adventure Time. Even the Steven universe creator started their career in AT.
The idea of Andrew W.K.'s trademark all-white outfit around a bunch of debris, dirt, dust and explosions sounds like a nightmare that becomes a washing powder ad.

I explicitly remember watching Brain Rush as a kid and thinking it was weird for a CN show, but still entertaining. I went back like a week later to show and was shocked to find it no longer existed. Super weird.

"Girls don't buy toys" is the same reason Cartoon Network canceled Young Justice. They literally told Paul Dini that too many girls watched the show, and that was why they killed it.

It sucks because Warner pushed out a lot of their home-grown talent and old showrunners. Maxwell Atoms, Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky, C.H. Greenblatt, etc. all had projects cancelled and eventually left the network to make room for... a bunch of shows thst were canned within a year. We were literally cheated out of years of gold animated content.

I remember watching Destroy Build Destroy as a kid, and weirdly, the one thing I really hated about it, was nobody EVER picked the Destroyers to destroy. Every episode I wanted to see them be picked and destroy whatever with their own hands. But I only ever remember someone picking them...once...and it was great.
I remember the one episode when they did pick the destroyers, the argument that made them choose them was a girl saying “they’ll do more damage to the metal and the other team won’t be able to do anything”

The saddest thing about this awful time in "animation" history is that it came at the heels of one of (imo) the best animation blocks ever. Har Har Tharsdays had a great mixture of Flapjack, Chowder, Total Drama, and either Stoked or 6teen, all shows I LOVED growing up. If Adventure Time hadn't been rejected by Nickelodeon, God only knows what would have happened to Cartoon Network going into the mid 2010's. Possibly no: Regular Show, Gumball, Steven Universe, We Bear Bears, and so many other shows that NEEDED A.T. to succeed when it did to prove that narrative-driven shows and animation itself could actually be profitable for A NETWORK THAT SHOWS CARTOONS.
I’m pretty sure those shows would exist if Nick didn’t reject since Regular Show’s creator actually worked on Flapjack. Gravity Falls’s creator and Adventure Time’s creator also worked on Flapjack.
Well I hate Adventure Time, Regular show is good At least season 1-4, Gumball is one of my favorites of all time, Steven Universe sucks, We Bare Bears is awesome.

Hey there! I worked at the studio from 2005-2010, so I can add in my a few extra opinions/bits of background. The rebranding: Yes, they were looking for pitches that still somehow involved animation. I pitched the idea of a show that followed different episodes being made from storyboard to final edit leading up to the presentation of the actual episode. Never got picked up. The writers strike did affect Jimmy's head. However, most of the writers /board artists were covered by local 839, not the WGA. The big turning point was the Boston / Aqua teen bomb scare. Jim Samples took the fall and the Stu Snyder/ Rob Sorcher duo took over. They wanted live action because yes it was cheaper (and faster) to make. Most shows don't work on the turn around time south park has. Sometimes it takes years to see a first episode. Live action was greenlit in droves and tons of people on the animation got laid off (myself included). It's sad how many people never went back to the field after the layoffs. I transitioned to making puppets, doctoring scripts and freelance (most recently I broke into video game writing) but other people who were incredibly talented had to turn to retail or government jobs, just to finally have job security. (Working in animation means always hustling for your next gig.) Some people were able to join Hasbro's studio back when it was up and running, but the glut of people looking for jobs was bad. With streaming platforms making originalcontentover the years has helped some peoplecome back, others are gone for good. It's a real shame, honestly.

Someone else mentioned it, too. 👍 The timing was weird because we had all almost forgotten about it when we had everyone together for a meeting down the street at the AMC they rented out (no place in house could hold everyone.) They ran a clip of Snyder talking to the employees from corporate from Atlanta. He used so many sports analogies, most people were super lost. Then he talked about Sorcher coming over from Mad Men, and I think that's when everyone got a sense of "Oh, no. This doesn't bode well."

I did merch for Andrew WK a few years back. Nice guy, pretty weird, clearly VERY burnt out by performing so much enthusiasm on his weird motivational speech tour. Still didn’t stop him from being a super super nice guy to everyone he came in contact with.

is it bad I liked quite a bit of the mediocre shows? xD I remember level up, dude what would happen, hole in the wall, and destroy build destroy very fondly. I think at the time I recognized that they were kinda bad but grew to love them anyway because I didn’t like much else what was on TV. I vividly remember one of the bumpers for the TV show Level Up and it had one of the main actors talking about one of their favorite bands, Artic Monkeys. I still flashback to that bumper every now and then when Artic Monkeys is mentioned.

I remember being so shocked when i found out that the majority of Out of Jimmy's Head is lost media, because there was definitely a considerable window of time that the show was an active part of CN's schedule that could have allowed for it to be recorded and archived by viewers. but practically no one in the world cared enough to do that. insane. That's also true of many other general purpose shows, such as news segments, weather forecast, TV listings. The more ambivalent an audience is of some thing's existence, the less instances of archived material there is.

@@brandonporter8509 There is so much lost media from Channel Awesome that it's really upsetting. Some of them may never be reuploaded because the producer long since lost or deleted the original copy to save room on their digital storage and no one has a copy of it. Heck, it could even happen to you. I have a video I made with an old camcorder as a teenager I was proud of that is forever lost to time because someone decided to record over it with footage of their dog running in a backyard and all of my early writing when I started to get into the hobby is lost because I used a program that was discontinued and was incompatible with Word and LibreOffice.
At this time in CN history I was poor and living in a crackhouse as a kid and they had just stopped FlapJack and Chowder to do this. Ruined my childhood more then the living standards did lol

If you meet people that are arrogant enough to ignore the flaws in their actions, you can indirectly mock them without a care, and they will still greenlit your show to air and make them tons of money.
Game shows are generally easier to fit alongside cartoons, since they have a goofier nature to them. It's like how there was a lot of game shows on Nickelodeon, like Guts, Legends of the Hidden Temple, or Double Dare 2000, but you can't really compare those to the live-action sitcoms around the same time. The closest would be Figure it Out, but that's more because it shared a lot of the same actors from All That.

From my memory, CN Real eventually wasn't just a block, but seemed to take over most of the day. This was a major disappointment to me as an animation fan, especially because Cartoon Network was my favorite station for my entire childhood. I abandoned Cartoon Network at that time cuz it seemed to only have the live-action stuff. Personally, I feel Adventure Time was what started the Cartoon Network Renaissance and started the process to get away from CN Real. I came back to Cartoon Network because of it and the shows that followed. I will say that the huge success of that and Steven Universe worked together, though, with their merch sales to convince the execs to go back to the network's roots.
I feel you for that. I literally remeber coming home at one point and incredible crew was on and multiple love action shows were on so long that it seemed like it really lasted the whole part of the day when i was home until maybe something in the middle or something that was animated would come on, then it'd go right back to live action. I went through phases with different channels, disney, nickelodeon, and cartoon network but i was trying to hold on to cn, but at some point i started watching Disney shows again during that time.
And you're so right about adventure time, im surprised he said Steven universe instead. I do remember being excited for Steven universe so much, but i think they already had some more animated shows before SU that weren't horrifically bad (ughhh besides things like mystery solverz *shudders*).

I completely stopped watching TV around this time because up until then I was really only watching CN cartoons anymore and a lot of the shows I watched on Disney and Nickelodeon were ending/had already ended. I missed so many good cartoons because I'm just out of the habit of watching TV anymore, though I did catch some of them as reruns miles down the line.

Greg Weidman has stated Young Justice was cancelled solely sue to low you sales. People misinterpreted Paul Dini's statement about Tower Prep's cancellation and applied it to Young Justice.
Honestly impressed that you managed to make the premise of Re-Animated sound coherent. That movie is batshit. It took me until like 20 minutes into the film to realize that I wasn't watching an extended opening dream sequence.

I remember when I was about 9 or 10 I was apart of some early test screening for the shows destroy build destroy, and dude what would happen. I sat in a small theatre-esque room with about 15-20 other kids, and watched the shows first episodes. we had a small dial on the arm chair of where we were sitting, and the number we gave was attached to our names so the people running the whole thing knew which kids didn’t like and did like this show. after the screening was over we were lead into offices where we sat and talked to people about our scores, and when I was asked why I gave it a zero, I said “It’s not a cartoon” (we all knew it was going on cartoon network)
I remember thinking the premise of Out of Jimmy's Head was the dumbest thing ever ("brain transplant??? what???") and never managed to get into it because of that
Tower Prep was a legitimately good show, and the fact that it got cancelled after 1 season, leaving _all_ of its mysteries unanswered, simply because the CN executives somehow actually believed "girls don't buy toys" has been absolutely infuriating me for years.
I do want to say it was more Adventure Time than Steven Universe that kicked off CN’s new golden era. AT was MASSIVELY popular from 2010-2015. It was everywhere, it was cn’s baby for a good while until teen titans go came out. Just always irks me a bit that because adventure time died down in popularity in its later years (though it was still VERY good), that people seem to have forgotten its impact. It kicked the era of “slice of life that becomes more mature and darker as it goes on” that steven universe and star vs thrived in. Seems just a little unfair to AT to give the credit to SU when steven universe likely wouldn’t have existed without it. It’s where Rebeca Sugar started becoming popular as storyboard artist in the first place.

Without Flapjack, Adventure Time, Regular Show and Steven Universe wouldn’t exist since Flapjack is where Adventure Time’s creator and Regular Show’s creator got there start.

the earliest memory i have of live action content being hosted on cartoon network was their friday block that started in 2003 that was hosted by tommy and nzinga (who was later replaced by tara). i seem to remember them doing skits and stuff (theres one that sticks out in my head of either nzinga or tara running after a car and seeing her in a side view mirror and the mirror saying "nzinga/tara in the mirror is closer than they appear). i know that technically it wasn't full shows with dedicated blocks in the programming, and it was more filler and transitional material between shows, but it was still a weekly "event" hosted by real people on cartoon network, and i remember it really blew my mind at the time that there were real people being shown on cartoon network (and also i could stay up late watching shows before adult swim came on)
However, the difference is that at least they were done as wraparounds, and some puppetry was used. Not to mention that Carton Cartoon Fridays, the previous block was just recycling it's segments over and over. With Fridays, there was always something new every week.
I remember they had human hosts and had the animated characters host, but I don't remember the order they happened. In hindsight though I feel like it was cartoons first, people second. But I definitely enjoyed that!
I might be wrong, but I swear I remember there was an episode of Dude What Would Happen where they where like “What would happen if caveman could write?” And they just dressed a dude up in a caveman costume and told him to write, and lost their shit when he did.

In actuality the scripted shows were really good as well. The natural history one was a fun romp even if it was just a rebranded Warehouse 13. And Tower prep was seeping with mystery and just begging for a deep lore exploration.
I'll never forget the first time i came across DWWH completely by accident. The premise of the episode was "what would happen if we popped the world's biggest zit?" And ended with a Volkswagen Beetle full of ranch dressing being dropped from a crane. The 2010's were wild.

Pretty sure CN Real would've died anyways. The shows had crappy ratings even before SU and AT were a thing. If not for those new cartoons, though, I imagine the network would've just died entirely.
Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Gumball were the brave saviors that ended the Dark Age of CN. Unfortunately, we’ve come to a new age where CN only values shows that sell for cheap like TTG like Spongebob was for Nickelodeon. It’s a shame how the animators that actually try to put on a good show only get cut by the network because it doesn’t try to replicate the energy from their top show.
I find it hilarious that OK K.O. ran a crossover episode with Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails... And then it’s cancellation was announced like a week later

It's weird. I remember another live action Cartoon Network show that wasn't mentioned here. A game show called Hole in the Wall, which I'm pretty sure was an adaptation of a Japanese game show.
Somehow I specifically remember being at someone else's house and specifically watching hole in the wall. Not as good as "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, I punch your face."
I laughed when Zoey 101 was included in the low-budget live action references just that was actually one of the most expensive live action shows Nickelodeon has ever made

True, Cartoon Network focus on the quality of their cartoons as well. Even in Cartoon Network’s dark age, there were at least shows on the network that were worth watching (Flapjack and Chowder are the shows I’m referencing to). The last good shows that I really liked on Nickelodeon were My Life as A Teenage Robot and Invader Zim (anything shows that came out after My Life as A Teenage Robot on Nickelodeon were shit). I never really watched Disney.
I don't think it was just Steven Universe that helped push live action content out, it would probably be the combined power of Adventure Time, Regular Show, & Steven Universe pushed out live action content.

yeah Steven Universe was a phenomenon but it really didn't seem like CN understood that, they really fucked around with its time slot and airing schedule and a ton of people resorted to finding it.... other places. I'm not sure they took any lessons from that show alone, honestly more child-focused regular Saturday morning style shows like teen Titans go probably had a bigger impact on their bottom line

Yeah, Cartoon Network was never really good at handling finales to their shows. Still pissed off about how they handled Samurai Jack series finale at the time in the early 2000s, how they handled Toonami's cancellation and Foster's series finale. The CN's _girls don't buy toys_ approach cancelled Green Lantern The Animated Series and it was phenomenal! It sadly was not liked by preteen boys but had a lot of female fans that were teenagers or in their early twenties, _and the toys sucked so no one was buying_ . The series was really really good, it's one of my absolute favorites, but sadly - there's only one season... AND DUDE NINJAGO IS ALSO PRETTY GOOD how dare you insult it like that Quinton... my emotional support show, how dare you. Despite everything, It's actually pretty good xD
Same thing happened to Young Justice! A huge portion of its fanbase was teenage/20 year oldish girls, which apparently isn’t as a worthwhile audience as the most beloved target audience 7-11 year old boys.

What really happened to Green Lantern the animated series was that the show was meant to market the 2011 Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds. And bc the movie was a critical and financial failure, it caused the animated series to be canceled. For Young Justice, it was bc of toys but it was just girls who didn’t buy them it was boys as well as the company Mattel who makes the toys and publish them did not promote the toys nor the network itself. In other words, people had no idea that the toys exist bc they were barely promoted.

There's two live action things I'd be okay with seeing on CN; Shows going backstage documenting how cartoons are made, and a Mythbusters-esc show where they try stuff cartoons do in real life to see if, for example, you can really slip on banana peels etc. ...the idea being that both would tie into cartoons in the end.

Ah man, Tower Prep was fucking awesome. I am still heartbroken it was canceled. Really great example of a fantastic show being aired on the wrong station. It could have easily been at home on CW (I think it was still WB at that time) or ABC Family.
@@Nitrodino7875 Its basically about a secret school that abducts kids with powers. For what purpose we never found out. And the powers aren't like large scale comic hero powers, but smaller stuff, like one guy has the ability to react to things to split second ahead of time, one girl has empathic abilities. It focuses on the four main characters trying to figure out why they are at the school and escape it. It was surprisingly good, just aired on the wrong network. Would have been right at home on like CW or ABC Family/Freeform.
If you search "Human Tetris" you can find the Japanese show they were imitating. There were attempts to make versions of that all over the world, except I think the Japanese version was just a segment on a larger game show about absurd challenges. It makes no sense to try to turn it into a whole weekly half hour program. But they did!
@@helloofthebeach It goes further. The American version hole in the wall originally aired on Fox and was meant for an adult audience having adults on the show and more mature humor. The show flopped on fox so it only lasted like literally a few episodes until it was picked up by cartoon network and marketed to kids.
I vividly remember that in the Reanimated movie, Jimmy’s love interest was Asian, but in the show she was black, and I’m pretty sure they were suppose to be the same character

I remember my Dad kind of teased us that it was fake while walking by, and I got so mad like "Dad, this is real! This is important!" Now I watch it and cringe. Also we filmed are own versions of Ghost Adventures where my brother would film me talking to Ghost using a tape-recorder. Unrelated side note: We'd call the main guy Zak Douche-Bagans.
no fucking way, i totally forgot that Bobb'e kid went to my middle school when that show was airing. He was constantly ditching class and doing wild shit. He did could do backflips and would do it often, and also got in at least one fight. He was there for less than a month i believe, good times.
The biggest take away I have from this era was tower prep had a bit where they used "you're gonna go far kid" as scoring music and I was like "this says fuck in it what the hell"
Dini's rant was a lie, Tower Prep was doing terrible overall, barely averaging a million viewers when the network's most popular shows were doing double that.
It's such a dumb thing to believe in. Pokemon, Barbie, and Hello Kitty make so much money because of their female buying power that they're so ingrained with the culture of so many countries.

I feel like it would have been less harmful to society in general if, in response to the writer's strike, the networks just filled the shows with nothing but the actors screaming, hooting, moaning, and making other assorted mouth noises. Or, you know, actually paying their writers what their labor was worth.

Does anyone here remember Cartoon Network's Tickle U block. That was when they tried airing baby shows in the morning the same way Disney and Nickelodeon do. That didn't last long either. I think part of the reason Disney and Nick can have live action content because they always did have SOME of it since either channel started. While Cartoon Network has *always* been about cartoons, so it was fucking weird to shove it in.
That’s one’s interesting because one of the things they aired on Tickle U was an American dub of Peppa Pig that’s completely lost now, aside from a promo and a few short clips.
I used to turn on CN exclusively for CN Real and then turn it off when the cartoons came on as a kid because I didn't connect with cartoons at all. this is strange because now I have trouble focusing on any media that isn't animated

I actually grew up during that re-branding era of CN and watched both Unnatural History and TP and I was just waiting to see if you talked about either of them, so I'm deeply satisfied. I was apart of that female audience that loved Tower Prep and I even re-watched it earlier this year so it's really nice to see someone talk about it for a change, even just briefly. I was so upset when it got cancelled too cause it was on a cliffhanger and so we'll never find out how the series actually ended. Also, love the content, keep it up.

Another thing that wasn't mentioned in the video was the Aqua Teen Hunger Force bomb scare in Boston back in 2007. The CEO had to step down, which was another catalyst for the CN Dark Ages.

Adventure Time really saved CN when you think about it. As soon as it premiered in Spring of 2010, pretty much everything started to change for the better on the channel.

@@beepboop756 Adventure time and Total drama island were carrying the network at the time, BUT niether ended the live action shows, because they were still making new live action shows and airing them when adventure time was airing. I dont think adventure time was in of itself enough to kill them off. I think, adventure time started a wave of serialized cartoons that were episodic with overarching plots; cartoons that gave you more as you kept watching. I think steven universe was the first notable example of the trend not including adventure time itself (and also it was absurdly popular when it aired and ground breaking in a lot of its own ways like adventure time). Almost immediately after steven universe most of the live action shows that hadnt already died were canceled.
Adventure time deserves credit for keeping CN alive after the disaster that was 2008 CN, but Steven universe is the cartoon that killed off the live action shows.

It sucks because Warner pushed out a lot of their home-grown talent and old showrunners. Maxwell Atoms, Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky, C.H. Greenblatt, etc. all had projects cancelled and eventually left the network to make room for... a bunch of shows thst were canned within a year.
We were literally cheated out of years of gold animated content.
C.H. Greenbalt is working on a new Hanna-Barbera cartoon show for HBO Max and Genndy is working on a new show for Cartoon Network and HBO Max.

I remember watching Destroy Build Destroy as a kid, and weirdly, the one thing I really hated about it, was nobody EVER picked the Destroyers to destroy. Every episode I wanted to see them be picked and destroy whatever with their own hands. But I only ever remember someone picking them...once...and it was great.

The saddest thing about this awful time in "animation" history is that it came at the heels of one of (imo) the best animation blocks ever.
Har Har Tharsdays had a great mixture of Flapjack, Chowder, Total Drama, and either Stoked or 6teen, all shows I LOVED growing up.
If Adventure Time hadn't been rejected by Nickelodeon, God only knows what would have happened to Cartoon Network going into the mid 2010's. Possibly no: Regular Show, Gumball, Steven Universe, We Bear Bears, and so many other shows that NEEDED A.T. to succeed when it did to prove that narrative-driven shows and animation itself could actually be profitable for A NETWORK THAT SHOWS CARTOONS.
I’m pretty sure those shows would exist if Nick didn’t reject since Regular Show’s creator actually worked on Flapjack. Gravity Falls’s creator and Adventure Time’s creator also worked on Flapjack.

Hey there! I worked at the studio from 2005-2010, so I can add in my a few extra opinions/bits of background.
The rebranding: Yes, they were looking for pitches that still somehow involved animation. I pitched the idea of a show that followed different episodes being made from storyboard to final edit leading up to the presentation of the actual episode. Never got picked up.
The writers strike did affect Jimmy's head. However, most of the writers /board artists were covered by local 839, not the WGA. The big turning point was the Boston / Aqua teen bomb scare. Jim Samples took the fall and the Stu Snyder/ Rob Sorcher duo took over. They wanted live action because yes it was cheaper (and faster) to make. Most shows don't work on the turn around time south park has. Sometimes it takes years to see a first episode. Live action was greenlit in droves and tons of people on the animation got laid off (myself included).
It's sad how many people never went back to the field after the layoffs. I transitioned to making puppets, doctoring scripts and freelance (most recently I broke into video game writing) but other people who were incredibly talented had to turn to retail or government jobs, just to finally have job security. (Working in animation means always hustling for your next gig.) Some people were able to join Hasbro's studio back when it was up and running, but the glut of people looking for jobs was bad. With streaming platforms making originalcontentover the years has helped some peoplecome back, others are gone for good. It's a real shame, honestly.
Yeah ngl I was hoping Quinton would reference the ATHF bomb scare because it’s a highly contained incident from a hindsight perspective that shook up so so much within Cartoon Network.

They ran a clip of Snyder talking to the employees from corporate from Atlanta. He used so many sports analogies, most people were super lost. Then he talked about Sorcher coming over from Mad Men, and I think that's when everyone got a sense of "Oh, no. This doesn't bode well."

I did merch for Andrew WK a few years back. Nice guy, pretty weird, clearly VERY burnt out by performing so much enthusiasm on his weird motivational speech tour. Still didn’t stop him from being a super super nice guy to everyone he came in contact with.

I think at the time I recognized that they were kinda bad but grew to love them anyway because I didn’t like much else what was on TV. I vividly remember one of the bumpers for the TV show Level Up and it had one of the main actors talking about one of their favorite bands, Artic Monkeys. I still flashback to that bumper every now and then when Artic Monkeys is mentioned.

I remember being so shocked when i found out that the majority of Out of Jimmy's Head is lost media, because there was definitely a considerable window of time that the show was an active part of CN's schedule that could have allowed for it to be recorded and archived by viewers. but practically no one in the world cared enough to do that. insane.

That's also true of many other general purpose shows, such as news segments, weather forecast, TV listings. The more ambivalent an audience is of some thing's existence, the less instances of archived material there is.

Heck, it could even happen to you. I have a video I made with an old camcorder as a teenager I was proud of that is forever lost to time because someone decided to record over it with footage of their dog running in a backyard and all of my early writing when I started to get into the hobby is lost because I used a program that was discontinued and was incompatible with Word and LibreOffice.
At this time in CN history I was poor and living in a crackhouse as a kid and they had just stopped FlapJack and Chowder to do this. Ruined my childhood more then the living standards did lol

Game shows are generally easier to fit alongside cartoons, since they have a goofier nature to them. It's like how there was a lot of game shows on Nickelodeon, like Guts, Legends of the Hidden Temple, or Double Dare 2000, but you can't really compare those to the live-action sitcoms around the same time. The closest would be Figure it Out, but that's more because it shared a lot of the same actors from All That.

From my memory, CN Real eventually wasn't just a block, but seemed to take over most of the day. This was a major disappointment to me as an animation fan, especially because Cartoon Network was my favorite station for my entire childhood. I abandoned Cartoon Network at that time cuz it seemed to only have the live-action stuff.
Personally, I feel Adventure Time was what started the Cartoon Network Renaissance and started the process to get away from CN Real. I came back to Cartoon Network because of it and the shows that followed. I will say that the huge success of that and Steven Universe worked together, though, with their merch sales to convince the execs to go back to the network's roots.
I feel you for that. I literally remeber coming home at one point and incredible crew was on and multiple love action shows were on so long that it seemed like it really lasted the whole part of the day when i was home until maybe something in the middle or something that was animated would come on, then it'd go right back to live action. I went through phases with different channels, disney, nickelodeon, and cartoon network but i was trying to hold on to cn, but at some point i started watching Disney shows again during that time.
And you're so right about adventure time, im surprised he said Steven universe instead. I do remember being excited for Steven universe so much, but i think they already had some more animated shows before SU that weren't horrifically bad (ughhh besides things like mystery solverz *shudders*).

I completely stopped watching TV around this time because up until then I was really only watching CN cartoons anymore and a lot of the shows I watched on Disney and Nickelodeon were ending/had already ended. I missed so many good cartoons because I'm just out of the habit of watching TV anymore, though I did catch some of them as reruns miles down the line.

I remember when I was about 9 or 10 I was apart of some early test screening for the shows destroy build destroy, and dude what would happen. I sat in a small theatre-esque room with about 15-20 other kids, and watched the shows first episodes. we had a small dial on the arm chair of where we were sitting, and the number we gave was attached to our names so the people running the whole thing knew which kids didn’t like and did like this show. after the screening was over we were lead into offices where we sat and talked to people about our scores, and when I was asked why I gave it a zero, I said “It’s not a cartoon” (we all knew it was going on cartoon network)

I do want to say it was more Adventure Time than Steven Universe that kicked off CN’s new golden era. AT was MASSIVELY popular from 2010-2015. It was everywhere, it was cn’s baby for a good while until teen titans go came out.
Just always irks me a bit that because adventure time died down in popularity in its later years (though it was still VERY good), that people seem to have forgotten its impact. It kicked the era of “slice of life that becomes more mature and darker as it goes on” that steven universe and star vs thrived in. Seems just a little unfair to AT to give the credit to SU when steven universe likely wouldn’t have existed without it. It’s where Rebeca Sugar started becoming popular as storyboard artist in the first place.

the earliest memory i have of live action content being hosted on cartoon network was their friday block that started in 2003 that was hosted by tommy and nzinga (who was later replaced by tara). i seem to remember them doing skits and stuff (theres one that sticks out in my head of either nzinga or tara running after a car and seeing her in a side view mirror and the mirror saying "nzinga/tara in the mirror is closer than they appear). i know that technically it wasn't full shows with dedicated blocks in the programming, and it was more filler and transitional material between shows, but it was still a weekly "event" hosted by real people on cartoon network, and i remember it really blew my mind at the time that there were real people being shown on cartoon network (and also i could stay up late watching shows before adult swim came on)
However, the difference is that at least they were done as wraparounds, and some puppetry was used. Not to mention that Carton Cartoon Fridays, the previous block was just recycling it's segments over and over. With Fridays, there was always something new every week.

In actuality the scripted shows were really good as well. The natural history one was a fun romp even if it was just a rebranded Warehouse 13. And Tower prep was seeping with mystery and just begging for a deep lore exploration.

Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Gumball were the brave saviors that ended the Dark Age of CN. Unfortunately, we’ve come to a new age where CN only values shows that sell for cheap like TTG like Spongebob was for Nickelodeon. It’s a shame how the animators that actually try to put on a good show only get cut by the network because it doesn’t try to replicate the energy from their top show.

The lack of cheap live-action shows was the reason I always loved Cartoon Network over Nick or Disney. CN Real was the worst thing to ever happen to CN.
True, Cartoon Network focus on the quality of their cartoons as well. Even in Cartoon Network’s dark age, there were at least shows on the network that were worth watching (Flapjack and Chowder are the shows I’m referencing to). The last good shows that I really liked on Nickelodeon were My Life as A Teenage Robot and Invader Zim (anything shows that came out after My Life as A Teenage Robot on Nickelodeon were shit). I never really watched Disney.

I don't think it was just Steven Universe that helped push live action content out, it would probably be the combined power of Adventure Time, Regular Show, & Steven Universe pushed out live action content.

yeah Steven Universe was a phenomenon but it really didn't seem like CN understood that, they really fucked around with its time slot and airing schedule and a ton of people resorted to finding it.... other places. I'm not sure they took any lessons from that show alone, honestly more child-focused regular Saturday morning style shows like teen Titans go probably had a bigger impact on their bottom line

What really happened to Green Lantern the animated series was that the show was meant to market the 2011 Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds. And bc the movie was a critical and financial failure, it caused the animated series to be canceled.
For Young Justice, it was bc of toys but it was just girls who didn’t buy them it was boys as well as the company Mattel who makes the toys and publish them did not promote the toys nor the network itself. In other words, people had no idea that the toys exist bc they were barely promoted.
But bro they milked the hell of ninjago it ended to me at the character design change i watched 8 seasons and they were good but after that nah

There's two live action things I'd be okay with seeing on CN; Shows going backstage documenting how cartoons are made, and a Mythbusters-esc show where they try stuff cartoons do in real life to see if, for example, you can really slip on banana peels etc.

And the powers aren't like large scale comic hero powers, but smaller stuff, like one guy has the ability to react to things to split second ahead of time, one girl has empathic abilities. It focuses on the four main characters trying to figure out why they are at the school and escape it. It was surprisingly good, just aired on the wrong network. Would have been right at home on like CW or ABC Family/Freeform.

If you search "Human Tetris" you can find the Japanese show they were imitating. There were attempts to make versions of that all over the world, except I think the Japanese version was just a segment on a larger game show about absurd challenges.
It makes no sense to try to turn it into a whole weekly half hour program. But they did!

17:37 Man, your analysis on Ghost Adventures is absolutely spot on. My brother and I were glued to it, watching every episode in the darkness. I remember my Dad kind of teased us that it was fake while walking by, and I got so mad like "Dad, this is real! This is important!" Now I watch it and cringe. Also we filmed are own versions of Ghost Adventures where my brother would film me talking to Ghost using a tape-recorder.
Unrelated side note: We'd call the main guy Zak Douche-Bagans.
I used to love Ghost Adventures until I found UA-cam, the horror itch was consistently scratched by quality content
no fucking way, i totally forgot that Bobb'e kid went to my middle school when that show was airing. He was constantly ditching class and doing wild shit. He did could do backflips and would do it often, and also got in at least one fight. He was there for less than a month i believe, good times.

crazy to me that destroy build destroy is just as hard to find than the rest. it was always the one i remembered as actually enjoyable
The biggest take away I have from this era was tower prep had a bit where they used "you're gonna go far kid" as scoring music and I was like "this says fuck in it what the hell"

Dini's rant was a lie, Tower Prep was doing terrible overall, barely averaging a million viewers when the network's most popular shows were doing double that.
It's such a dumb thing to believe in. Pokemon, Barbie, and Hello Kitty make so much money because of their female buying power that they're so ingrained with the culture of so many countries.

I remember that exact same excuse being used to explain why Young Justice was originally canceled. It baffled me even then.
I feel like it would have been less harmful to society in general if, in response to the writer's strike, the networks just filled the shows with nothing but the actors screaming, hooting, moaning, and making other assorted mouth noises. Or, you know, actually paying their writers what their labor was worth.

I honestly get the feeling that most kids nowadays are gonna remember Andrew Wk for stuff like Destroy build destroy and the ready to die song found in the cupcakes video , whether that's a good thing or not is up for you to decide.
That's exactly where I first found the song years ago when I was like...11. Nowadays I actually like the song and I don't even think about Cupcakes HD anymore.

Y’know if Out Of Jimmy’s Head was JUST a kid who could see cartoons in real life, it might’ve been okay. But then the had the *brilliant* idea to have an alien sister... And that just pushed it too far.
& I remember the mom was an astronaut (hence the sister) & ALWAYS wore the space suit around the house
So that brings up the question... Was she adopted, or did mom have her before meeting Jimmy's dad or what?

@@PersephoneDarling28 Yes but their brands weren't tied to 1 type of media. Disney had live action movies for decades and Nick always had live action shows prior to it's 80s renaming. It'd be like if Food Network started a sports block, sure there's a huge market for sportsball but not on that network.

Destroy Build Destroy was honestly the only show I cared about.
I hate to say it, but same. Destroying vehicles and materials, building a vehicle out of those materials, then destroying the loser's vehicle was cool.
Same here. Just mindlessly demolishing and blowing shit up is just so satisfying to watch. Better than all of Michael Bay's explosions for sure.
I liked hole in the wall, and I did watch incredible crew sometimes.

There were only 2 cartoons on at the time: the marvelous misadventures of flapjack, and chowder.
Does anyone here remember Cartoon Network's Tickle U block. That was when they tried airing baby shows in the morning the same way Disney and Nickelodeon do. That didn't last long either.
I think part of the reason Disney and Nick can have live action content because they always did have SOME of it since either channel started. While Cartoon Network has *always* been about cartoons, so it was fucking weird to shove it in.

That’s one’s interesting because one of the things they aired on Tickle U was an American dub of Peppa Pig that’s completely lost now, aside from a promo and a few short clips.
I remembered seeing that and tuning in out of curiosity at some point. It was the first time I ever learned that a Land Before Time TV show existed.
I used to turn on CN exclusively for CN Real and then turn it off when the cartoons came on as a kid because I didn't connect with cartoons at all. this is strange because now I have trouble focusing on any media that isn't animated

Cartoon Network's idea that "girls don't buy toys" has gotten other shows canceled too. The most infamous example of this is when Cartoon Network cancelled "Young Justice."

I’m so happy someone has finally made a video about this, I think about CN real at least once a week. These shows have been engraved in my brain, not in a good way. I always remember the anti bullying movie about the high schooler who can cook? Or something?
