    A big warning: Not Cool features a lot of intense stuff, and in the final act randomly has a physical assault in the storyline, and I didn't do a very good job in the video of warning people about the topic being brought up. sorry, everyone, I'll try to do better next time.

    Another thing you can say about Linkara that you can't say about Doug Walker: he treated his cast and crew very well during filming. Apparently, most of the budget went towards paying their salaries and providing them with catering and hotel accommodations. None of the people who worked on the movie have said anything bad about the experience.
    Doug, meanwhile, didn't know you had to provide water for your actors while filming in a desert.

    Okay so in regards to Atop the Fourth Wall movie budget, I went through some like... very quick and very rough maths of how much it would cost to fly to and from chicago, feed, house, and salary (at 15/h 8 hour days) the 16 people, not including extras, involved in the movie for a week and I'm already hitting around the 40k asking price just for that alone, so uh... yeah movies are expensive, 60k isn't a lot of money. Especially if you actually want everyone to be paid fairly and treated well.

    • @BaeCat872
      @BaeCat872 4 роки тому +145

      Yeah it’s kind of annoying hearing “where did the money go?” on low budget movies when people forget that the actors- no matter how shit- actually need to be paid for their time.

    • @Megafighter3

      Funny thing is, I was re-reading the Not So Awesome doc and I got to Lewis' section and he mentioned that the rent for filming at the place they picked was 1000 a day. They did ten days of filming there, leading to 10k (1/6th of the total budget) just going to filming at that location.

    • @TheHenriGame
      @TheHenriGame 3 роки тому +10

      @@BaeCat872 yeah, it's almost like making this movie was a really bad idea. Like, come on, the money was supposed to be used to pay for good actors, set, equipment, editors, and directors. He literally paid for their flight and everything else he could. That's where the money went... to make somethings coherent to the lore instead of making new characters or a good final stand-alonestoryline. That's something that not only destroyed the movie budgetarily but also made character arcs and the script predictable and uninspired. I don't blame Quinton for not taking that into account. It's shit production either way... but it's also a passion project. And also, Kickstarter takes half the money. So they really only had 30 000. Instead of accomodating that with the cost he just said fucked it and decided to have motherfucking fight scenes, and ki battles.

    Fun fact: Linkara recently did an audio drama thing with most of the rest of the old Channel Awesome cast, and, honestly, it's a good example of just how much better he is at this then Doug. I mean, it being audio, he obviously didn't have to deal with the safety and catering issues Doug did, but, in terms of writing, t's clear he was more considerate. The anniversary specials pretty much always centered around Doug and his characters, but , in this, every producer gets their own dialog, storylines, and chance to shine. Also, whereas Doug was INFAMOUS for shoehorning everyone into his own style, Linkara watched episodes of everyone's shows to prepare, and allowed them free reign to improv and say different stuff, if they thought what he had written didn't fit their character. It's still not well-written, but it's clear people actually liked making it, which is more then I can say for Doug's projects.

      I was trying to figure out how much the movie might have actually cost (not knowing anything about film, just trying to get an idea) but I immediately realized I couldn't begin to guess. What equipment and props were bought and which did he already have, what locations did he have to pay to film at, who got paid and who volunteered, etc. Just paying for everybody's travel expenses would probably put a good dent in $60,000 by itself.

    You know you mention the budget of 60K but I don't really feel like its super unreasonable. Like on their Indiegogo they said it would be 10K for DVDs and another 10K for the online release which is basically just them making a profit. So that leaves 40K for the movie, there are 6 main actors assuming literally nothing else costs money and no one else gets paid that's $6,666 for each of them which is not crazy. Then you have to consider probably at least half of that had to go to other actors, and transportation costs, I highly double anyone walked away from this making more than a few thousand, and most of that money would have been simply compensating them for there time because acting isn't free. That was like half of the point of the shit Doug Walker got for his movies was making people work without being paid.

    I think the reason why Linkara is a good youtuber is because he's always stayed genuine. Whenever Doug had a crossover, it always felt forced, and they were always below him, but when Lewis does it, it feels a lot more like him wanting to bring his friends in to have some fun. Doug forced people to adhere to his style and mannerisms as the Nostalgia Critic, but Lewis lets people behave and act how they would normally in their own videos.
    He just released another set of videos that I think is actually really good (since they didn't need to actually film, it was just an audio drama).

      I feel like, and this is me just shooting in the dark here as if I were making such an essay, is that he seemed different when he popped onto the scene (before a lot of current polished and stylized videos of superior quality came along) and his level of being that guy who seemed to start up movie reviews kept him at least as a relic with some authority. That being said, the signs were all there, especially as he began to be able to afford his yes men sidekick actors, very basic sets, and very basic editing programs (not even considering the whole game show controversy).
      Regardless, I still think someone should really go in depth with it. If they weren't still going and likely rather touchy, I would love to see some small production do like an indie Ed Wood or Disaster Artist (but more like the book than the movie) type movie exploring Doug's ego trip to his current status.

    • @doodstormer
      @doodstormer 5 років тому +93

      Personally I had really enjoyed his content in the very early days (pre-To Boldly Flee) because at the time my interest in B-movies was really starting to develop, and while his content was god-awful as 'reviews', the fact he was basically just making abridged recaps of assorted B-movie classics made it really easy to get into. I recall even in those days I would frequently find myself fast-forwarding past Doug's awful skits and 'review' to get to the clips. From there I sort of jumped over to Spoony who was a bit more substantial as a reviewer and covered a wider range of things I liked, and then after Spoony... well, Spoonied, I moved on to RedLetterMedia which is leaps and bounds beyond even most modern reviewers in terms of content quality and expertise. More recently other ex-CA creators like Lindsay Ellis have also really gotten out from the NC shadow and make excellent review content that I enjoy quite a lot.
      A lot of others I've talked to about Nostalgia Critic seem to have sort of a similar trajectory, coming to him initially from either AVGN or some other creator, and then using him as a leaping-off point to other better content they liked more. Considering how heavy NC was on crossovers, I imagine that probably accounts for a not insignificant portion of people that once "liked" Doug or the NC character.

    • @Menfhis24
      @Menfhis24 5 років тому +65

      I used to be subscribed to Angry Joe so the first time I discovered NC was when they did a crossover review for man of steel. I’ll admit I actually found him pretty funny and binged most of his other reviews. I don’t know if his humor got worse over time or if it just started to become stale to me but I eventually didn’t find him funny anymore. I honestly watch yourmoviesucks and ralphthemoviemaker now because not only are they more precise about why a movie failed but they’re also funnier and way more entertaining than Doug at this point in my opinion.

    AT4W is definitely a relic from a different era of internet review shows. Wheras Lindsay Ellis evolved into a more video essay format Linkara has stuck to the same MST3K style of review. Which I do enjoy in a comfortable sort of way.
    But the thing is a few years back Linkara did a April Fools episode where he did a parody of Jim Sterling's show and the thing is, it's actually really damn good. Insightful, well written and actually did pretty well views wise as far as I can remember. Personally I'd love it if he switched to doing more of that content. He IS capable.

      Agreed. I adore Linkara tbh. He's one of the few pieces of my childhood that I can still hold in rather high regard. His videos are corny as all hell, and I'd feel weird about introducing them to someone now, but they're very comforting and familiar to return to as a child of the late 2000s. He got me into comics, after all. And a number of his reviews, such as the ASBAR series, really hold up. I mean, they clearly stuck in people's minds; you can still in some comic circles refer to the characters of ASBAR as "Crazy Steve and Dick Grayson, Age 12" and plenty of people will get the reference. That said, I do honestly wish he'd do more videos like his April Fools video. His comics commentary is actually brilliant.

And as a nerd, how can you NOT want to do the kinds of things that Linkara does? Working Pokeballs and lazer guns? Real Cybernats and Sonic Screwdrivers? It's corny and dumb, but I would love to have the ability to play in a world like that.
    If you ever do this again, may I recommend Lazer Team? The movie RoosterTeeth made starring two of the Achievement Hunters (gamers, not actors) and one of the company's founders? It's not very good. But it too is fun and dumb and kinda encapsulates how much RoosterTeeth wants to grow and be taken seriously.
    Also does Who Killed Markiplier count as a movie? It probably would be considered a short film, I guess if you put all the parts together. I've been a fan of Linkara since I was 12 and still am at 23. He got me into comics, and the first comic I ever bought is signed by him. Is his storyline stuff cheesy? Hell yeah. I honestly don't follow his skit stuff that much. But his reviewing is still solid (don't believe me, check out the ASBAR reviews. The delivery of "Batman, agent of NAMBLA" still gets me after all these years). It's an outdated style, yes, but when he hits he makes seriously good content. And the point still stands that for a comics-based channel, which is by nature niche, he still has a very strong following. I think part of the fun of his content is that the silly stuff is played so seriously.
    It makes me happy to see so many sticking up for him and his movie in the comments. Linkara in my opinion is a relic of the late 2000s internet in much the same way Doug is, but one that many of us still look at fondly. Hell, watch any Backissues episode (a much newer and on-trend show) of a comic he's reviewed and you'll get references to him in the comments.

      I should note that most of the budget went into renting a warehouse to place sets and film there. I think he stated the original idea was to save costs by filming at Doug's studio, but Mike Michaud refused to let them film there. So, yeah it's kinda Mike's fault(what a shock)

    Please keep dragging Shane Dawson and reminding people that while he's "not as bad as" he was when he first started doing UA-cam, he still partakes in shady shit, and trying to side-step it with this phony innocent, wholesome facade.

  • @MegCazalet

    I watched this whole video having misunderstood that Not Cool was made in 2014. (I know next to nothing about Shane Dawson.) I thought it was at least 4-5 years older than that, would’ve even placed it mid-2000s, based on how desperate, clumsily raunchy, and clueless it is.
    Also Shane looks so much younger than the limited exposure I’ve had to him. I think it’s because, as Quinton describes, he’s apparently changed so much over the course of his fame. Also, I think of him as an Onision counterpart, and I was aware of his “fame” from his meme-y moment on Tosh.O, so I run them together in time.
    Realizing Not Cool was made in 2014 - which to me at my age exists both as recent memory and ancient history - was just really jarring. Time and relativity is getting more and more fucked up and twisted as I get older.

    nash and allison were absolutely the best part of the atop the fourth wall movie tbh? they had scant scenes where they were central but they were incredibly enjoyable. nash's "i. i want a spaceship :c" bits and wild confusion at joe having lightning hands was kind of hard not to smile at.
    the thing that gets me too is i drop in and out of following atop the fourth wall? like i'm someone who never sticks with the continuity because i view it so rarely and quit for so long at a time. but still the important detail of that movie is that linkara actually fucking made sure the characters of the other content creators were matched to their actual personalities instead of just. "casual rape scene goes here" like doug.

    I'm not a fan of Linkara, but I liked his movie, I've just finished watching it. Never forget what it is: a low-budget internet movie. For what it is, it has good effects, good dialogues, not too many pointless pop cultural references (looking at you, NC...), and decent acting for amateurs (I was especially surprised by Nash). I don't think it deserves all those negative reviews. Is everyone comparing this to high-budget Hollywood productions??

There was Atop the Fourth Wall, The Cinema Snob made a movie (which I actually owed a DVD of before eventually throwing it out,) Spoony announced that he was making a movie and never made it, and I'm pretty sure about half of the contributors to That Guy With The Glasses/Channel Awesome at least announced a movie if not filmed it.
