Mimikyu is my favorite Pokemon and I don't think this nerf was uncalled for. I love that it's still totally valiable in any format, but like you said, it made Mimikyu more healthy to the metas than being something people have anger for.

i think mimikyu’s absolute dominance in bss 3v3 was probably the biggest contributor to its nerf. for every one viable set mimikyu had in vgc, it had like ten in bss. in some of the special cartridge formats people were even running mold breaker haxorus just so they had more than just excadrill as a check to it. it was number 1 in usage for basically the entirety of gen 7, ahead of even landorus, tapu koko, and all the megas. i agree with your point about how the nerf made it more balanced. i know it doesn’t see a lot or play much in vgc anymore, but in the current s13 ruleset mimikyu is top 30 in usage in bss, and that’s no holds barred. it was top 20 usage in s12, and top 3 last time we had a format without zacian. it’s really a whole other beast in 3v3.
Quick short idea maybe?? I feel like most EV spreads are pretty straightforward, but one thing that messes with me is when should i be investing in HP over Def/SpDef or vice versa? Is it more beneficial to increase one over the other in niche cases? Am i just missing something? At what point is investing in defense on lets say a blissey, worse than hp? Just feel like its a little wonky on paper and thought youd have a clear answer and maybe other people are confused like me.
With only a handful of exceptions, if you're just going for general bulk, HP is more valuable(As in, two points of HP is more value than 1 DEF and 1 SpD against any given attack). If you're specifically making a physical wall, then DEF is best(Point for point, Def does more against physical attacks than HP), and SpD for special bulk. There's a few scenarios where one stat is so much higher that buffing the lower stats make sense(For example, if you're using Shuckle as a physical wall, HP is still the priority choice as it's HP is so low and Def so high the math tilts in HPs favour, but then you can max out HP and Def EVs anyway), but 99% of the time HP for general bulk, Def for physical, and SpD for special.

I think I've seen somewhere that another reason for the nerf is how hilariously overpowered mimikyu was in 3v3 battle spot. It often ran SD + sash or mimikium Z, but sometimes also trick room or more exotic options like curse+pain split. BSS being a 3v3 format, it's much more fast-paced than most other metagames. As a result, a pokemon that can guarantee survival for more than 2 turns against any opponent while being able to run a Z-move / guarantee live 3 hits with a sash is insanely viable. It also singlehandedly invalidates most attempts at setup sweeping, which is ridiculous for something that can also act as a moderately powerful wallbreaker with SD. It's unbelievably scary because checks are few and far between, and even they are not safe. Non-steel walls like Snorlax, Porygon-2 or Hippowdon risk getting evaporated by +2 Let's snuggle forever, while steel types like Celesteela, Kartana, Mega Scizor are afraid of +2/+4 never ending nightmare. It can also run a curse+substitute+pain split to invalidate most defensive mons while still being able to thwart setup sweep attempts.
You could take out focus sash mimikyu in one turn if you had a multi-hit move like bullet seed or water shuriken and a strong enough attack from your second pokemon
It’s the power creep we get every Gen that makes me wonder why they bothered in nerfing anyone anymore. Eiscue has a similar ability, but it even restores its Ice Face if it regains full health. Plus Dmax didn’t allow for much of Mimikyu’s and Especially Aegitslash’s gimmicks to work. I honestly feel with every new meta nerfing pokemon has no point, bc it balances or outright overshadows previous Gen competitive gimmicks.

Lemme explain: • -25% HP if rocks are in (and Spikes/T-Spikes are still an issue). • Using Heavy-duty Boots is a hard decision bc Belly Drum is their only gimmick and you would prefer Figy/Salac Berry or even Leftovers over that (specially for the Substitute + Belly Drum set). • *_"No priority?"._* The fact they can't learn Ice Shard or at least Aqua Jet is the reason why you have to rely in Salac Berry (and there is the reason why Substitute + Belly Drum too). • Surprise lead isn't an option for a 50 Speed 'mon. Everyone knows there comes Belly Drum or Substitute, so ez takedown. • Remember the Ice typing? Try to switch-in without dying against basically everyone that isn't an stall 'mon. You still need one turn to use BD, but when you take a hit, Ice Face is gone and here comes Flare Blitz/Close Combat/Iron Head/Rock Slide/Stone Edge; or an hypothetical Sp. attacker can take the penguin down in the second hit. You can't even trust switching in front of a choice-lock 'mon bc Ice only resists Ice. What a waste of a pretty decent 100 Def / 80 SpD. • Movepool is painfully reduced to Icicle Crash/Icicle Spear/Ice Punch; Liquidation/Waterfall; Iron Head, Zen Headbutt and even Reversal. Try to not getting hard-walled when there are just 2 or (if you're optimistic) 3 move slots to choose. • If you're gonna use a Hail Team to maintain Ice Face and maybe give Aurora Veil cover, why in the goddamn Earth you will put all that effort in Eiscue and not for a true Hail abuser like Slush Rush Arctozolt/Sandslash-A. Those are monsters with Life Orb. That thing wasn't designed to succeed.

I have thought about an issue with gen 8 to gen 9 transferring, with all of the genning in gen 8, wouldn't they be easily transferable into the future games? Sure that adds an extra step which makes it annoying but I still think that is an issue
Let's be real, other people using genned mons has never actually effected our enjoyment of the game. Genning was arguably easier in past generations, so gen 8 really wasn't that bad.

I remember when breeding just one competitive pokemon was a pain now you have mints/bottle caps the ability to transfer egg moves between the same species. I don't understand it people are lazy. People tend to think Gamefreak doesn't make buffs or nerfs because of singles but this definitely was a nerf because of both doubles and singles. Battle spot 3v3 has always been super popular in Japan and mimukyu being able to make most matchups swing entirely in the users favor as you in gen 7 with sash it's basically always a 3 hit if you don't get prior damage. Galewings got nerfed on a similar basis as in doubles having every flying move including be priority was great. In singles it's even more broken where no matter how fast your team might be the bird will kill everything regardless of speed stats.
I hate them nerfing pokemon for competitive, I don't give a crap about competitive, I don't even want the pokemon balanced. I want to start out with weak pokemon and then replace them with overpowered dragons!
if you don't want to go on competitive that's fine but the story mode is already easy even with weak pokemon so why they shouldn't balance? competitive need to be balanced but if you don't care you will not care even for balancing so what's the problem?
I would not really say its better in every way - It can't stop damage from special moves - and it was given to a pretty terrible pokemon who has not succeeded in any comp environment
It was not a VGC nerf but a 3v3 singles nerf for sure. Mimikyu has been the tier king ever since gen7, only losing in popularity to pokemon like Zapdos and Cinderace in dynamax formats. Mimikyu has a million sets, from life orb swords dance to thunderwave curse pain split to curse trick room, mimikyu can do it all and beat almost everything. That's why it has to be nerfed.
For those who don’t know - Mimikyu was and still is a top force in BSS due to disguise enabling a nearly free swords dance to clean up late game. As well as being generally annoying to handle its disruptor sets. I am personally a fan of this nerf lol
I think the nerf is relatively fair, given disguise is mainly intended to work as a free substitute. It costs less health but is also less durable and potent.

Think another part of this nerf is also Battle Spot Singles. Similar to aegislash, mimikyu saw absolutely absurd levels of play in the BSS metagame.

Mimikyu in general is strong. Its access to Swords Dance and Shadow Sneak and being a Trick Room Setter make it a threat worth preparing for.

Ideally the HP of the pokemon is twice as height as the defence stats.

Ice Face is balanced bc it can't block Special attacks and Ice typing is the ultimate nerf in the metagame (just ask Avalugg, lmao).
Ice Face restores when Hail starts, not at full HP.
