i have watched this video about 10 or 12 times now just to hear you say "A Bomb" LOL it also teaches my children about the importance of safety while using pressure cookers
Hey really great vid! This one was really well edited! Question: Do you add grain in a still air box or laminar flow hood? I just did my first 4, 5lb bags in a still airbox and it was a real pain..
Couple of questions. First the compliment! Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Easy to follow and understand. I hit that Subscribe button! 1) The photos at the end look like you are using this substrate in a monotub. Is that correct? 2) Have you used a wood pellet (sawdust) watered down from wood pellets as a substrate in a monotub with success? In your title you call it sawdust, but I would call what you used wood chips. To me they are two different things. What do you think? Keep up the awesome vids. Love watching you move to see if the top view camera is getting the money shots!
Cooking water out of anything reduces the H2O of Earth forever. Do not be wasteful. There is a fineline between using water to the point that it becomes endangered.
Well I always thought (and still do think) you wanted WHEAT STRAW specifically, and NOT hay at all. I think she may have just misspoken at the beginning of the video, because after that she keeps saying "straw", but they are DEFINITELY not the same thing, and you dont want to use hay.
@@SachaLotus Ok, that IS hilarious (I guess?) since everyone should just KNOW that. Do you not get MAIL down there or something? No such thing as online merchants? Just wondering, I mean UA-cam seems to work alright for you
NIce, my wood lovers are giving me trouble. A hint someone gave to me about the straw is to take a weed whacker to it so it gets cut into small pieces. The sharing of stuff like that is what is cool about the community.
The 'metal safety topper' (canning rack) that comes with the canner goes at the bottom of the pressure canner to keep the contents sufficiently raised above the bottom. Use at least as much water to cover it. The metal rack used at the bottom in this vid would probably be best used on top. It looks thinner, and heavier. Switch these two. DO NOT 'RELEASE THE PRESSURE' manually!! Let it lower on its own as it cools down. Releasing it prematurely could cause big problems. Also, use straw, not hay.
Finally! I came to the comments sections to find someone with some basic understanding of the matter. Your the first I found. Thank you for your brain!
I hear you, but releasing the pressure really only applies to canning. Releasing manually when canning does cause big problems for the contents in the jars, the duration under pressure, etc.
Hey Ashley! Love your videos. Just got an inflatable monotub in yesterday. Hope it was yours! Could you do a video on how to make sawdust spawn bags? Very little info online, especially videos. I mostly see with pellets or sawdust and some wheat bran. And 2.5 hours at 15 psi. Is this what you would do? In what proportions? Thanks again. I’ve watched most of your videos… some of them multiple times!
Hello thank you for this really simple and sustainable recipe. Could I add horse manure to this and if so do I change the ratio of sawdust to straw or just add the horse poo to the 50/50 mix of straw and dust?
And if the mycelium has covered around 70% of the bulk substrate than inoculate with a spore syringe? Or could I make the bulk substrate and inoculate afterwards?
I haven’t seen anyone mix straw and sawdust before for oysters, just use them separately. Have you noticed any benefits to combining them? I have some straw and sawdust that I was going to use, but was going to try them separately before I found your video. Curious as to whether you found any advantage in mixing. And thank you for such well explained videos. Especially your liquid culture video!!
Great video! I’ve learned so much from your channel on top of other like minded individuals on youtube. I’ve been growing mushrooms since 2012 from buying supplies from avalonmagicplants since 2012 & midwest growkits since 2014 and recently I finally got pressure cooker & other materials to be my own retailer similar to my old suppliers while being able to grow way more mushrooms for way cheaper. Would you say this method would work if I put some wood chips into the mix?
Nice job, big fan of you videos. My favorite thing about your videos is that they’re so easy to understand and fallow along, you don’t cluttering up with music, just knowledge. Thank you. J
@@BoomerShroomer From the video it looks like you are using straw. Hay is normally softer and finer, and wont give you splinters! But i am not sure if hay can be used for mushroom cultivation.
@@BoomerShroomer no Ashley you are using straw. Hay isn't supposed to be used for mushroom growing. Also there is a difference in appearance between the two and from your video that is definitely STRAW .

You are so welcome! Thank you!

Glad it was helpful!
Do you need seal the bag ?

Ive been using a laminar flow hood. Before I just did everything in my bathroom.
Another great video. Thanks for the info
Thank you!
If you wanna try an experiment, try no pasteurize or no sterilize for only one of your bags, just to see what happens?
And compare
Really interesting to see the different types of bulk substrates that can be used. That colonized in the monotub quickly. Will you use a casing layer?
I will use a casing layer for the oysters. I think they need it. Will open them up in a few days.
Seen this a lot with oysters , does it work for cubensis?
Nah, but woodlovers

Yes and yes. I have a video about how to grow oysters in a monotub where I use the substrate and it was very successful! Thank you!
Where did you get the bulk sub bags?
These are unicorn bags. Many sellers sell them. I got my from Meyers Mushrooms.
Did you still put a seed?
These two bags in pressure cooker for 2 hours, would water get dry out?

As u mentioned, sawdust need to go through sterilisation. If only use straw can only pasteurise?
Yes! Ive seen a lot of people just pasteurize straw. I was going to try it too.

tree moss can be used instead of coco coir (coconut husk), it maintains humidity without soaking up moisture. @@SachaLotus
Can you use softwoods as well?
yes, and I also know people that use the wood pellets you get for BBQing.
I wonder if I can mix shred cardboard with sawdust instead since is more difficult for me to get some hay were I live ...

Did you use an impact sealer to seal you substrate bags, prior to PC?
No, I don’t seal them before I sterilize them.
Once your substrate is out of the cooker did you add the mycelium?? Was it from an agar plate or liquid??

what happens if we add like corn or other grains ? do we get more mashrooms?
Maybe... it will add additional nutrients. But you won't necessarily get more mushrooms.
Hi Ashley, should I dry the straw some before sterilizing
No, I don't.

Why wouldn't we add the gypsum *after* draining the water off?
U added before so the substrate can pasteurize
How come that plastic bag didn't get burned/deformed when expposedto heat with pressure inside the pressure cooker?
Because it’s made out of polipropolyne , it has to say the number “5” on the label, other type of plastic will melt
