I'll definitely be showing this to my friends! I've been growing mushrooms for a while now, and I have a flowhood and an autoclave, but I still love watching videos on the basics. It's always great to refresh my knowledge and pick up new tips!
Dude! this is by far the best tutorial I’ve seen about this so far! You covered the entire process and you didn’t even need any super expensive equipment like everyone else recommended . Keep up the quality content 👍
Btw before transferring the grain spawn you can transfer some of the grain to a new jar in order in order to skip the step of growing the mycelium on agar. Additionally different kinds of mushrooms might want a different "bed" to fruit from. For instance you may want something for vertical like a bucket with holes in the sides to grow ouster mushrooms
If you're a first time grower I'd just skip agar for the time being. It's much easier, and more straight forward to inoculate the grains themselves. When you have colonized grains you can start practicing grain-to-grain transfers to build up confidence for agar, and to test your sterile technique. Also if you just buy mason jars with screw on lids you don't have to punch a hole in them. Just flip the seal upside down and screw the lid on, then back it off a little so it jiggles a bit. They'll remain sterile and can be stored for ~2 months once fully colonized in my experience. P.S Your mason jar lids will start to rust after a while of use, but because you sterilize the entire jar there is no risk of contamination! Good luck!
I have seen allot of videos on this subject and this is the first video I’ve seen that actually shows how many things other people leave out or don’t cover well. I appreciate your work. Please make more videos about these topics happy new years 🎉❤

An excellent walkthrough video covering all the options presented nicely. Well done. Nice that you covered using spore prints to agar for a new genetic line, or the choice to use tissue dissection of a prime mushroom to agar, to carry on the 1st grows genetics. Obviously your initial Agar wedges to grain, could also have gone agar to agar to carry on that first line from Spores. Or agar wedges placed into Liquid Cultures mediums of sterilised distilled water and either Sugar, Honey, Light Malt or Karo as LC feed. Hopefully generating a continuous line of LC from that first Spore Syringes Agar, or endless Grain to Grain production. Always interesting from Spore Syringes, to see what new genetics you have given life lol but with disadvantage of higher chance of contamination, compared to known LC genetics, more likely out competing any airborne contaminants on heat pasteurized substrate only. Great video though and neat idea to combine the still air box as monotub too, unless you need to do further still air box work during the grow cycle. It's a neat combo option though. Top notch video and happy Shrooming. heelloo! thanx so much it's a wonderful tutorial, I send you pure love! I'd like to ask some advice if I have grow bags with filter, how can I sterilize properly without make them explode, how to close them during sterilization, and of course if you ever tried this method. Hugsssss!!!!!!!!
Great vid! I'm curious about the agar. Everybody says to wrap it in parafilm-which I have done and have failed pretty much 100% of the time. So the question I have is, do agar plates need fresh air exchange?
How should I prep these? I'm thinking a chilled marinade and then skillet frying with oil and water and using in a salad. Though this seem like so much work for some cuisine. It's not like these are oyster mushrooms that have yields and nutrients worth growing for.
Yes, it is possible to grow mushrooms from foraged spores, but it is very challenging to do so without contamination due to the non-sterile environment in which the spores were collected. I guess cloning would be better to avoid contamination.
Is the tape a must-have on the mason jars filled with rice? Is it possible to storage the rice after the steaming in an air tight jar without the hole and the tape?
It´s really important, because the mycelium needs the fresh air, but you don´t want contamination to come through that hole. And the tape prevents the contamination from getting inside your jar.
Do you have advice on legality in the US and Canada? I live in the US but if it is illegal in the US and legal in Canada i could consider renting in Canada.
Cloning means same genetics, so yeah, they should be similar in size and potency. And using spores is like going to the casino. You won´t know what you will get. You might get great genetics or not :)
Quick question: do desiccant packs lose mushroom potency? I know it’s important to keep the mushroom dry but I was wondering if they have any effect on potency.
@@freshmanjeff I think they do it with the agar first to make sure it's not contaminated, because if you do it directly with the liquid culture or the spores in the syringe it can be contaminated and you won't realize it, and you will lose your spawn and 5 or more days when you realize that your spawn is contaminated, in short, they do it to make sure the spores are not contaminated and from what I've seen in videos it also colonizes faster. I also think that if half of the agar in a dish is contaminated, they can just take the good part and maybe it will work. I've only been learning all this for about a week so maybe I'm wrong. What I would like to know is if it is really worth adding coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum. I heard that this makes it grow faster and helps it to be less contaminated, but logically adding all of that is more expensive, so I would like to know what the difference would really be by adding that. My English is my second language, sorry if you don't understand it.
@@freshmanjeff Today I learned about liquid culture vs spore syringe, I thought they were the same thing, but now I know why they say it is more convenient to put it in agar speaking of spore syringe, since spore syringe last longer, more than 9 months at normal temperatures, since they have a liquid that prevents them from multiplying any more, perhaps that is why they say that syringe spores are not convenient, but spores in liquid culture are recommended, because the liquid they have makes them continue feeding and consequently multiplying.of course with the problem that they can be contaminated and maybe you don't realize it.
Hey there i've got a question. I want to ship the starter pack to switzerland. Do you think it will pass the border? It is illegal to own, use and grow shrooms in switzerland, so i guess there are some risks?
The starter kit contains only spores, which are legal in most countries, because they don´t contain any active components. We also ship discreetly, so it´s very unlikely to have a problem with customs :)
One layer of micropore tape is not sufficient fo stop contamination from occurring It would be better to inject one plate and then transfee ro another.
Consider adding a mesh platform, all that movement working on the SAB is going to kick up a bunch of mold spores. Using the platform reduces this, and to add on wiping down everything is entirely redundant. It gives 0 benefit
Liners prevent side pins by adhering to the block of mycelium preventing an ideal microclimate from forming that would encourage pinning. Light has fuck all to do with it

Injecting spores into grain is bound to introduce contamination. Though, it'll probably still work for most people.
