I'd like to now why you didn't start a fire FIRST. I'm a former wilderness / big game guide. I always get a fire going and collect ample wood. It keeps me warm as I build the shelter and should I injure myself I have a fire that can save my life. It's hard to collect wood with a twisted ankle or an ax injury to the body. Loved the video, but safety first. Get the fire going. In the wilderness "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it"

We finnish are born that way, we are with the nature. This guy is more than average, very good in old fashion way. Hundreds years ago this way of living and the hunters scared away even The Vikings.
Do you live in a house or do you live the life of a Viking? I live normal in fall and winter but have psychotic mania in spring and summer and live outside, not like a primative but more that I live by animal instinct and sheer violent disregard. Merry Christmas everybody

Excellent thing to show having your roof also be a source of tinder. Forgaing extra materials before you need them and to serve more than one purpose to have right inside your shelter is always important and many times overlooked.
Do the Rock walls help radiate the heat from the fire? Do you tear down these shelters when yo are done? Would love to see you revisit an old shelter and see how it has held up over the years without maintenance.
Now that's a Extreme situation, snowing like crazy, cold, looks like a fun time and really a good time to do what it takes and overcome the elements, get a good fire going, stay warm, i have done that when i was much younger and remember it was fun but a big challenge to overcome the elements, good looking shelter and keep that fire going my friend.
My all-time favorite emergency shelter on UA-cam for two reasons. #1. Its ingenious two saw-horse construction technique allowed for plenty of space, while offering very good protection against the snow. #2. It looked like something a "normal" person could construct with a minimum of tools and no chain saws. I don't like those Taj Mahal-like dugout "emergency" shelters with perfectly cut 12 inch logs, rock and mortar fireplaces, etc. Nice job and thanks for posting.
I always took a 2 gal zip lock bag. Knocked all the snow off my boots, threw them in the zip lock and slept with them in the sleeping bag down by your feet. I hate cold boots in the morning.

Camping in minus 5 degrees Celsius was an unforgettable experience-the coldest I’ve ever camped in, it rarely gets mutch colder where i live. But despite layering up in my warmest gear, the chill crept in, especially during the night, making me appreciate the simple luxury of a hot drink by the fire. It was challenging and didnt got mutch sleep that night, but the quiet beauty of the frost-covered landscape made it all worthwhile.
'Great adventure video, Lucas! You always make any shelter look so warm, cozy. "Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Can't wait for more to come!" 🌲🌲🌲🏞🏞🏞
a lot of work for no gain in warmth over a tent, actually. if you know to use the Siberian fire lay's abiilty to project all of its heat in one direction, twice as far as is the case with a normal fire.
You must have grown up in this area to take the cold. Everything is so fresh and quite the eye candy.😊 nothing like wool sweather and socks it seems like it helps with pain.
Love the video enjoyed watching it. I’m curious how often you have to sharpen your axe to keep it at its optimum level of sharpness to chop wood for the days that you’re out there. Keep up the good work!
Good basic construction but needed snow heaped around bottom of walls to cut wind, and more leafy branches to fill in gaps, then hopefully it would snow and the snow would rest on branches and help insulate more.
Wow! What extreme conditions! Like another world, if one lives in warm climates. The birch bark is so very inflammable. Forest fires in summer must be a challenge!

Two comments/tips, 1. When you make the roof rather than cutting the thinner top off to length, cut part of the way through and then fold down. This then forms your end wall that you can lay evergreen branches against, as you did with the side. 2. when doing the side with evergreen branches a) do this BEFORE covering the roof with evergreen branches, and use last branch junction [bottom branch of a growing tree] to form a hook. This is then hung over your outer most roof pole. When you then put the evergreen branch roof on this stops the side from being blown/disturbed by the wind. The top won't be blown away as a) you have a lot of weighted branches on top of each other with gravity acting on them, and b) when it snows this will add more weight and form an air/water tight roof.
What is the coldest temperature you've camped in?

Since I'm not a germaphobe, I cook eggs and other meats directly on the rocks than ring my fires. It is a nice "upgrade."
