Solo Camping in the Mountains with Heavy Rain and Wind - Storm Testing the Nortent Ly 1

- Join me as I set out into the mountains to test a new tent in challenging mountain conditions. After the hike up the mountain, I find a suitable spot to pitch the tent, prepare a delicious meal, and settle in for the night as the wet weather moves in. Throughout the night, the tent sustains heavy rainfall and strong winds for over eight hours. Let’s find out how it held up! I hope you enjoy the video.

I’ve never ever left a comment before, but I’m so impressed with your videos, they are so interesting and entertaining, I’m 75 years of age and it tempts ms to go out and buy all the gear necessary and try a trek and camp myself, I look forward to any upcoming adventures you upload with interest.
Highlight of the week when one of these videos is released. Good weather to test your new tent and always a pleasure watching you prepare your meals.
🙏😀 it was a great test for the tent. Really enjoyed this camp 👍. The meal was great! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a nice weekend.
My favorite outdoor and cooking channel!
😂👍🙏 I really enjoyed the Pad Thai on this camp!
I like this one man tent 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I actually really like it as well. I had my concerns but I really enjoyed using it on this camp. It’s a very unique design and a comfortable tent to spend the night in. It’s definitely not perfect and the leaking spots need to be addressed but overall I was impressed with how it did in this weather 👍. Really appreciate you watching.
Rain, the perfect way to start my day. I'm always so excited for your videos.
Hope you enjoy your Friday! Appreciate you watching
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I like your tent in the last video better
The Unna is my favorite tent 👍⛺️
Great, finally a new movie 😀
👍😀⛺️ Hope you have a great Friday and weekend. Appreciate you watching!
Great video, you've definitely inspired me to be a bit more adventurous with the food I take. Cheers
Thanks! That’s great to hear. There’s no reason we can’t eat well at camp 👍😀. Besides if you like cooking, it’s really fun to cook with your camp cook set.
amazing cooking as always! Makes me so hungry watching lol
Thanks! 👍😀 I really enjoyed this meal. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you have a nice weekend.
I love the knife part, kinda funny😁. I'm always excited to see what you're going to cook Thanks for your videos. Till next adventure😊
😅👍 definitely not ideal misplacing my knife. At least I found it. Made for an interesting cook. Just happy the little plastic knife worked well enough. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend.
Love your filming style, glad you remembered to charge the drone this time, I love these places even when the weather is grim, 'there can be no true beauty without decay' chin chin
Thank you! I definitely made sure I charged the drone for this camp 😅 wasn’t going to make that mistake again. I was just really happy I got the chance to fly it. I didn’t know if the weather would hold off long enough to fly it … luckily it did. It’s always fun to show these locations from the perspective of the drone. Really appreciate you watching.
Outstanding!
Thank you! Hope you have a nice weekend 😀
Glad to have found your channel. Liking the countryside from Wales. Definitely different landscape versus what I see in Virginia. Perfect way to start my day before I get on a plane this afternoon. Ill be sure to check for new videos!
Happy to hear you like the channel. This part of Wales is stunning. It can have some pretty moody weather but the views are just fantastic 👍. Have a safe flight and thanks for watching!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors thank you. Flying to Chicago for a weekend visit to see some family.
Fantastic video
Thanks! Really appreciate you watching
Excited for another video 🎉
🙏😀 really appreciate you watching!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors no problem Bateman 😉😂
Love the detail you go into on the guides, and the benefits etc. brings a bit of technical knowledge into the video (for us tent geeks).
Thanks, glad you didn’t mind the extra tent talk 👍😀. I try not to talk too much about gear in my videos but because I was specifically going out with this tent to see how it could handle the weather there is definitely a bit more tent talk. I had to cut quite a bit from the video because I love rambling about tents 😅 … especially when they are new. Always exciting to check out something that’s a bit different than the other gear you have. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you have a nice weekend.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors appreciate your interactions in chat as well. One question, I didn't realise the water filter works on salt water as well?
Unless it wasn't your drinking water as well, just for cooking?
I love chatting about gear and the outdoors in the comments section! No it doesn’t work on salt or brackish water, just fresh water 👍
@@GoingSoloOutdoors thanks. Never forget your knife! 🤣
You found it 😂
Instant watch!
🙏😀
Glad to see you got the tent in some good conditions! Hmmm I do like that vestibule space. I see you got the drone this time 😂 great shots at the beginning. Great cooking as always
Watching now. Boy I wish I could get out as often as you do! Pity about the leaking but I am sure that seam sealing both sides will fix that. That food looked amazing.
It’s definitely not always easy but I try to get out at least once a month! But because I don’t always have wiggle room when picking a date that sometimes means I have to go out when the weather is not ideal. In this instance, when I wanted to test how the tent would do in poor weather it worked out quite well. Really appreciate you watching.
@@GoingSoloOutdoorsNice one. (edited my original comment since finishing). My hit rate is about 6 weeks, so I need to think of "filler videos" to produce. Your production is superb.
Thanks! Personally I would just continue making the videos you would want to watch when you have the time. I made a filler video once and in the end it just didn’t feel right making a video because I felt I needed to. It’s just UA-cam not my actual job. There are far too many channels that just make a video to make a video. Some of my favorite channels are the ones that don’t make videos very often and you can still feel the passion they put into every video.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors superb advice, thanks. I guess if you enjoy what you're doing then people will naturally enjoy your content and growth is then organic. Video makers like yourself got me into wild camping a year ago (I even go camping with one of them) and that's purely because I share their enjoyment. Thanks
I’ve camped in the EXACT same spot on my channel 👍🏻🏴
Loved the Newt 🦎😅
Great video as always 👏🏻
Nice! It’s a great spot. I typically like to get in a bigger hike, but this is really nice as the days are getting shorter. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you have a nice weekend.
Dang....u r first camping UA-camr eating PaThia awesome 😂😋
😂👍 it was tasty! Really appreciate you watching
Interesting design, which I quite like. The weight is advertised as 2.65kg? I’d be tempted to try just spraying some Fabsil over the dynema patches stitching to see if the works but it might also shrink seal if it hasn’t been wet before. My favourite area up there Todd. I hope you are well mate and feeling better soon. ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
Thanks Jiffy. I’m feeling 100% again but now my wife has it. Suppose that’s how it goes. The actual weight is quite different however, I included the footprint in the weight and the stuff sacks. I also have the medium sized pegs, not the lightweight ones. I actually really like the design now that I’ve used it. So much in fact I have no qualms with carrying the weight. It’s a very comfortable tent. Basically feels like a two-man tent with only enough room to sleep one. I haven’t decided exactly what I’m gonna do with the patches yet. The stitching was completely dry. The water seems to be coming from underneath the Dyneema pads. It’s really strange. I may try to pitch the tent in the garden and pour water over it until I can re-create the issue to see what’s going on. But when I got home to dry out the tent, it did appear that there was water trapped between the Dyneema patches and the outer tent fabric. Once it’s fixed, I’d like to take the tent out again and bad weather. I was pretty impressed with it.
Excellent video, nice to hear an American accent too.
Thanks! 😂 I actually prefer hearing a British or Australian accent in videos. Glad my accent’s not offputting I suppose 👍. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you have a nice weekend.
@GoingSoloOutdoors Keep 'em coming, your videos are a pleasure to watch.
@@leew4145 👍🙏😀
Great video…I’m waiting for my Vern 1 to be delivered any week now..been told to seem seal it before use..however you don’t expect to have to do this on such expensive equipment…I hope Nortent get back to you about this 🤞
Nice! I really like the design of my Vern 1 PC however I think the double skin Vern 1 is much more versatile. I’ve actually noticed that they are now offering seam sealing for free on tents like these new tunnel tents which is nice. Hopefully they start offering it on their other tents as well. I haven’t had a chance to contact them yet. I want to test the tent in the back garden also to see if I can re-create the issue first. Really appreciate you washing.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors yeah that’s what I’ve gone for…i like the look of the PC version from just its looks but I couldn’t live year round with it…nice to see a UA-camr in Fjallraven and not the norm you usually see 👍🏻
Love my Fjallraven clothing, been using it for many years. Once I find a brand I like I just stick with it, if it works it works 👍. One less thing to worry about.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors same here brother…had my gear for many a year doesn’t it wear well…expensive but it’s built to last….you not fancied a Fjallraven tent?
@@alastairjones7359 I really love my Hilleberg tents so I have invested quite a bit in that brand but I will definitely try a Fjallraven tent at some point!
UGOH~ No knife!
Then later . . . phew.
😅👍 just wish I found it sooner, but it made for an interesting cook. Really appreciate you watching.
Best of all no midges
😂👍👍👍👍👍👍
You might want to consider releasing a sound file of the rain and wind (not necessarily this one, but a soothing one) for those that like it to go to sleep to... :) Great video - my heart was in my mouth when you said you forgot your knife! What is the fix for the leaks, for those of us who don't know a whole lot about camping and just follow you for the views and feel-good-factor? (It might make a nice insta-reel or something). As for drama: no idea what you're referring to (see earlier statement about camping), but quite right - stay out of it, by far the best approach in my view! looking forward to the next one - will you be testing the Nortent again or going back with a different tent?
I would have to look up the name of the channel but I’m pretty sure I stumbled across a channel once that just records ambient nature sounds and rain for that specific purpose 👍. It was really nice. I was really shocked when I couldn’t find my knife. It was a bummer I didn’t have it for the cook, but I was at least happy I found it later. I may do a short video showing me seam sealing the leaky portions of the tent 👍. For the next video, I’ll probably be bringing a different tent. I like to try to switch up my tents each camp but you’ll definitely see this tent again in a future video. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. I hope you have a nice weekend.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Ah fair enough, should've known someone would be devoted to it - its not something I've chased up as if I was to play it loud enough for me to hear without my hearing aids (I sleep without 'em) the entire neighbourhood would be complaining (not to mention my husband). 🤣 On the plus side, I sleep through every thunderstorm going! looking forward to a different tent - and another video! Have a great weekend too :)
A nice mini test of this unusual tent. Lots of headroom and it didn’t seem to move much despite that. Any idea of the actual wind speed by the tent?
👌❤❤
🙏👍😀⛰️
Great video as always mate. I really wish I could get out to Snowdonia more.
The Nortent Ly 1 looks good. Those are some mighty vestibules for a one man tent.
Do you mind me asking what camera you use?
If you go to his webpage he's got his gear, including cameras listen. Assuming it's up to date at least.
@@nihlify Ah yes, didn't spot that. Thanks so much for the heads up mate. 👍
There is a forclaz 2 man tent which has 2 vestibules and I think it only weighs aroundl 3kg
There are many two man tents out there with two vestibules that weigh less than this. I was curious to try this because it’s a one man tunnel tent with two vestibules which I haven’t really seen before. Always fun to try new designs 👍. Really appreciate you watching!
i am wondering, dont you ever bring earplugs for the night? these days i kinda always use them and they let me sleep through the haviest storms :D
can recommend!
Yes, I bring earplugs on every camp. However, when I’m testing a new tent in bad weather like this, I won’t wear them. I want to be able to hear if a guy line comes loose or something. Also being able to hear how the tent is flapping in the wind gives me an idea of how it’s actually handling the wind 👍. If I was in one of my Hilleberg‘s that I have much more experience with and completely trust I would’ve been using earplugs.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors ah okay that makes total sense. Dont wanna miss the tent failing :D
Love your videos. Your positive vibe is great. Looking forward to the next vid already
Whatever you do, never mention a Newt again, they shut down road building projects if a Newt is found, we don't want to be banned from hiking in the hills because you found a Newt 😂
🤣 oh Wow really?! I believe it was just a smooth newt aka common newt. It was definitely cute, but I didn’t realize finding one could halt construction projects 😅. I carefully placed him nearby in a safe place so all is well 👍. Not trying to anger the Newt community!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors it's ok, the common Newt is well, pretty common 😂 it's the Great Crested Newt that will shut down stuff 😂
Thank you so much for taking us along on this beautiful and interesting mini adventure. Reminds me of when my wife and I took a walking tour around a good part of Wales. Great memories!
Thank you for watching. This area of Wales is incredible. Such a pretty place
Please could you tell me whereabouts this is in Snowdonia it looks so lovely 🫶🏻🙏🏻love what your doing
Thanks! I typically don’t like to give the exact locations of where I camp in my videos because I don’t want to promote the overuse of a particular site. However, if you look at the location of Tryfan on a map you will find this small Llyn directly next to it 👍. Really appreciate you watching the video.
What are those bodies of water called? Too small to be lakes I'd assume. Puddles?
It is called a Llyn which translates to lake or pool in Welsh 👍
@@GoingSoloOutdoorsyes, llyn. A pool or puddle is pwll. Need to get that tongue around the ll 😁.
@@petergilbert72 👍 I honestly try to avoid saying many welsh words. I find it so difficult 😅
@@GoingSoloOutdoors ha ha! Tryfan features quite often 😁
Is it that Nortent-UA-cam oversaturation time of year again aleady?😬
😂👍 I suppose so. I try not to focus too much on the gear in my videos camps, but I was very curious to see how this would perform in the wet weather. There are definitely a few things that need to be addressed. Appreciate you watching. Hope you have a nice weekend.
I really enjoyed this thanks. I just don't get why anyone would take such a heavy and expensive tent, especially when it leaks? I suppose we all have our favourites. Great camp!
Glad you enjoyed the video. I am a bit obsessed with tents and I wanted to try this tent because the design is a bit unique for a one man tent. Typically the weight doesn’t bother me for just these single night camps, especially if it is a roomy and comfortable tent. It did well in the wind but the leaks were a bit of a surprise and definitely something that needs to be addressed. Lucky I should be able to fix that pretty easily on my own. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend.
