    This was the album that got me into AFI. I saw them open for Rancid in 2000 and the very next day I went to a local record store and picked up The Art of Drowning. To this day it’s still my favorite AFI album.

      Mine too, black sails was what got me into AFI. I remember being so excited when art of drowning came out. I like when bands evolve, but what they sound like now is sad to me. I miss the old sound. I even liked decemberunderground. And some songs on crash love were good, but everything after that makes me sad.

    AFI continues to remain very humble as they remember the earlier days before hitting semi-commercial success with Art of Drowning.

      So funny how 15 years ago to me feels like "o so you just saw Davey." Would love to have run into davey at hatebreed. He was back of the stage for a Dillinger show once (krazyfest 2000).

    my first taste of these guys was sing the sorrow. I then Immediately got into their older stuff..and I went to there first 3 hardcore punk albums...then I went to black Sails in the sunset...which absolutely blew me away. I was obsessed for months...I didn't finally make my way to Art of Drowning until legit 2 or 3 years after starting my AFI journey and I remember not liking it right away...Idk why but something was different...once my ear got used to hearing the change in sound...I fell in love every single song is a legit banger and it's such a strong album...so so unbelievably good and i dont know why it took me so long to get to it and why i didnt love it right away but im glad...honestly i didnt love decemberunderground right away either but I absolutely love it now...I hated crash love when it first came out to the point where i didnt even give it another shot until many years later and you know what still not my favorite but i really love crash love alot now...

    Saw them open for Rancid back in 2000 (w/ the Distillers!) and I had no idea what to expect. My future high school girlfriend who was older and cooler than me had told me about them (she was there to photog for the local paper...like I said cooler) and I was curious cause I’d seen pictures of them and heard maybe one song. I was kinda skeptical cause they seemed goth (lol) and I wasn’t really into that at 14/15, but they were playing with Rancid who i loved (still do!) so whatever. I got right up front when they started putting out like pumpkins and all kinds of other stuff and I was like “What is this, the Nightmare Before Christmas?” And then Strength Through Wounding started and I lost that attitude real quick. When it broke into Porphyria the place lost its collective shit. I was right in front of Davey when he unleashed and he looked like a punk rock death god that night. That cool devil lock that I would spend the next five years trying and failing to achieve, covered in tattoos, and a face like a banshee-he was the coolest MFer in the world that night, just a beast. I had never seen anything like it. I’m not really into their new stuff all that much, though I’m happy they’re still going and think it’s good music. But I’ll still throw on the unholy trinity of Sails, EP, and Drowning every once in awhile when I’m going out with my eyeliner on and my tight black pants with my hair done up. Those records always get me pumped. Much love and respect for this band.

      I hear you, I'm not a fan of their newer stuff either. I like everything from Answer That through Art....but I can't and still can't get into Sing or December.. nor Crash or the Blood Album...I tried but it's just not for me. I still jam out to the older albums all the time though.

    I must be old asf...and even though have a 19yr old daughter... I do not get any of what some you guys are rambling on about...I know I am sure I will lead off topic... AFI is and never was emo nor is a hair cut.... stereo typical "emo" isn't something from hot topic nor can be actually baught.... ATLEAST from others I know that label themselves emo.... most of us like AFI are punks could not actually afford with our then jobs.... But what do I know? Shit I do know is most of us made our own hair cuts ..hair does grow back....used punky color from Sallys...... Bought plaid golf pants from thrift stores.2nd hand shops...or whatever left over material we got.... He'll we got most out stuff from others....hand me downs if you will...pierced ourselves.. As teens(1990s) we did not blink/ bat of an eyelash to randoms calling us freaks...even if the dudes wore our nail polish n eyeliners!! As long as they gave it back!! lmao!!!! All we cared for was music....going to shows local not stadiums... No politics.... No bullshit.... SxE or not we did not care as long as you weren't bashing one another for dumb shit..... All these cyber gangster WiFi will never understand...truly grasp...all of Daveys bands/projects/books/ and a green day Broadway under his belt plus a clothing line and a hella lot more!!!!He is vegan and SxE ! I wish people read books....got out and met ppl ..talk n ask questions...nothing wrong with being curious but when your walking past throwing shade cause you wish you had an ounce of talent of any kind..aside videos games n internet..appreciate what you learn put it into something proactive.... anything aside from drowning in their own miserable cess pole they created...and only think of them selves....I am proud to say we may have gotten older....look less freakish but some how stand out without a peep...some may look to the stars....moon...sun....universe...above us all! We do not ever stop n smell the roses either!!! .it wasn't fashion to us more or less being awesome and we did no harm to ourselves or others! We did it because we wanted to and maybe inspire others not to be afraid of judgemental ppl when it should only be you that are worried for themselves! In the end we came on this planet ALONE and we will part this planet ALONE! What we all do in between that is up to each other and maybe help instead of bashing.... Some maybe anarchist.nihilists.xtrmst.into protesting for whatever you believe in!!! or just in the back ground kind of person which is A ok !! Stay strong..empower..hug each other observe and see how you can be a better person than before!!!..comic books and star wars 1-4 are cool!!! Parody bands n movies r funny lol

    Art of Drowning is a hell of an album, and to me it's the last real AFI record. And I don't mean that as an insult, but something happened to them after this album. Friends and work buddies always hyped up Sing the Sorrow but when I finally listened to it, I wasn't really a fan There are a few good tunes on it, but I definitely wouldn't call it a masterpiece like a lot of people do. I think Black Sails and Art are the true masterpieces...front to back, all the way through, great music. To this day, I still try to get into Sing every now and again, but it just doesn't hit me like the other records before it.

      Black Sails and Art of Drowning are masterpieces. But I completely disagree, Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground are also masterpieces. And it's a toss up between these 4 albums to which I like better. To each their own though.

    with all due respect to davey, the sign of more females at their show was a sign that their music was simply getting poppier and more palatable....not better! i like all afi's stuff, but their best albums were up until sing the sorrow!

      i would include very proud of ya and shut your mouth as well as among their best but i generally agree with u! black sails will always be my favorite afi album, its such an incredible album from start to finish. it was still energetic punk rock but it was also really melodic because of jade puget's awesome guitar sound and addition to the band!

      @brapbrapbrapbrapbrapbrapbrap 5 років тому

      @@oxrjbizzle1984y i agree too. That's actuslly what i first heard from them, the earlier stuff like very proud of ya,shut your mouth and answer that. But i really fell in love with the melodic vibe of black sails and aod. I remember downloading their stuff off Napster, just a bunch of random songs in like 2002. I was like is this the same band haah.

    • @oxrjbizzle1984y
      @oxrjbizzle1984y 5 років тому

      yeah very proud of ya was the 1st afi album i heard, a friend let me borrow his cd, and i was blown away by it. i thought it was one of the best punk rock/hardcore punk albums i ever heard, i listened to it constantly for that whole summer. and i still feel that way, its so awesome and its got like 23 songs on it, lol.....afi is one of my favorite bands ever from their inception up to about 2006-ish, i thought decemberunderground had a few great songs on it but that was when they started to get too soft imo....sing the sorrow was a really great album too even though it had a different style than the earlier stuff, it was a really dark, depressing record but in a cool way!

    I was big on this band. Worshipped them. At 28 I gave my life to christ and he showed me how I was being played on witchcraft from inspirations such as malleus maleficarum that afi is familiar with. Other song names such as sacrifice theory, the nephilim and a story at 3 are satanic references. It needs to be known what they do. Dont fall victim to their cheap tricks. You can make decent music without that and trying to look like a man lady but I guess that's their price for what they make.
