I also miss the gothic-themed lyrics combined with a unique hardcore punk sound that afireinside had evolved into. I was hoping that they would keep building on that style, but they deviated into a more mainstream sound. They still make great music, though. To me Sing the Sorrow is the culmination of their (although they hate to admit it) gothic/hardcore phase. They complain that it isn't a genre, and it isn't because few bands can pull off that sound. It's just a description of their music/image at the time. And they did it beautifully! Sing the Sorrow is their true masterpiece. Black Sails in the Sunset and The Art of Drowning are equally as powerful, but not as epic. I don't mean to disrespect Davey or AFI, I think they are one of the most authentic bands around. I remember hearing that he said that and thought it was super cool that I got to see them on stage together once in I wanna say about 2001 or 2002. AFI was opening for Danzig and they did one song together, I think it was Halloween. It was most definitely a Misfits song.
the only thing I can add to what you said, which is not to discredit what you've said, as I'd call it all true. Is that they as a band have said they won't want to just keep doing the same thing, they want to grown and evolve ,and I think you can stand by that they started as hardcore punk, moved into gothic punk (IE the misfits) then more kinda emo punk and now they remind me of depeche mode lol... makes me wonder just where they will go next! I'm not gonna pretend I like it all, but as someone that plays music and wishes to all hell I could have band that makes money I can respect not wanting to do the same thing... try listening to the same song 100x in a row.... now imagine doing that then playing one instrument on it 1000x in a row... that's rough.. they may change their style, but who they are, doesn't change, and you can hear that... and honestly that's rare bands change style or mellow out all the time and sound like 100% different bands, you can still hear AFI in their new stuff even if it doesn't sound the same.
Their first 7 albums, to me personally, are such flawless masterpieces. My personal favorite is, “The art of drowning, because it is the style between, “black sails and sing the sorrow.” AFI is such a unique and authentic band. I haven’t heard any of the new stuff because I’m worried I won’t like it and I don’t want to tarnish my love for AFI. 😂😂
I took my daughter to see AFI in Orlando for her very first concert ever. Great memory for me to see her enjoy herself so much. It was definitely one of the highlights of her life. Mine as well.
I took mine to Lupo's in RI when she was 9. I took her 8 more times over the years. Last year, at 24, she flew us out to Los Angeles to see them for the one off. AFI has been an important part of bonding with my daughter. I may be 59 years old but I still know what's up.
I worked at a gym in berzerkeley and he was always super cool and easy to talk to. His early punk is sick. He also did some stuff on a nerve agents CD and was always happy to help local bands. Most people that have this much fame as assholes.

AFI has been my favorite band since I found their music around 2000, when I was 13 years old. I was beyond blessed to finally see them in concert in 2014, opening for TSTM and Linkin Park (all 3 bands put on an absolutely INCREDIBLE show!!) AFI only did like 5-6 songs and I bawled my eyes out through every one as I was singing along. 😂 One of my best memories in life.
Davey used his intelligence and common sense and did not finish, following the lifestyle that the vast majority follow of drug abuse and promiscuity. It is to be admired, considering that he lives in a society where the common thing is to destroy himself and not respect himself. Davey Havok is a determined man and his way of thinking makes him more attractive than he already is.
Interesting... I interviewed Dave, Adam and Geoff in the spring/summer of 1995 (I think) when AFI came through Chicago and played Fireside Bowl. At that time, Dave dressed more as a SoCal skate punk-type, with the over-sized JNCO-styled jeans and XL t-shirt for a guy who should be wearing a medium. That was very common for that era. I haven't thought about these guys since Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes came out. Neat to see the progression both as a band and individually.
I've always been fascinated with Davey, I kinda grew up with him, when I was 18 I discovered AFI promoting straight edge and vegetarian/vegan lifestyle and I said "this is me". Then I got a tattoo of them in my lower back when I was 19. I'm 31 now :)
I havent jammed to AFI since I was in high school. I am 25 now, just went to the first show of their new tour and they are still amazing. Great stage presence! Left out a few of my old favorites but even the newer stuff isn't terrible.
Did anyone come to actually watch this video and not bash Davey??? Yes, he's vegan and he's proud of it! It doesn't make him him pretentious or arrogant to stand up for what he believes in!!! People who have met Davey Havok have said he's a very nice man that will talk to you like you're close friends just from meeting you at a AFI show. The people who come here just to make fun of Davey are the real assholes!
jb111082 he didn’t say that he’s more evolved than others, he just said that our species himself included need to become vegans (which is true, meat production is really bad for the enviroment. And no, I myself am not vegan)
@@jb111082 The issue is, veganism would still be bad for the world because we would need twice as much land in order to grow enough food for everyone. On top of that, veganism won't stop starvation. The biggest issue with world hunger and food is that people can't afford it or do not have access to it everywhere. There is not true answer of what would truly save the Earth in terms of food production. But, truthfully, humans are parasites and they are destroying the world. If the population didn't keep getting bigger, we wouldn't need to mass produce everything and create a lot of waste. The true answer to save the world is being conscious of the environment around you and not making huge carbon footprints.
He also apparently hated everything about college. I used to be a part of the AFI fanclub, which meant that I had access to a forum where the band members could get on and answer questions from fans. I asked him what he disliked the most about college (while stating that I hated the goddamn 7:30 am classes I had) and his answer was short, sweet, and to the point: "Everything."
I remember back in dial-up days hanging out in the skateboarding chatroom where people were sXe and proud. It was a cool place for all kinds of people to chill. Sometimes I miss those deviants (including the sXe kids; they were a blast).
He's so humble. I dont know if anyone caught what he meant. Or what I think he meant when asked about the article about him. He said their are mirrors which distract him more than sentences about himself. I think he's implying. I know who I am I dont need strangers to tell me.
Q: How do you know someone is a vegan? A: Don't worry, they'll tell you whether you ask or not. I kid though. Such a great artist, performer, and band.
Meat consumption is destroying the planet. Would you rather us just sit around with our thumbs up our asses, or do something about it? Awareness brings change.
At the 6:35 mark you can hear some voices in the background. In case you wanted to test your hearing. EDIT: There are also voices Around the 7:48 mark. I think there is a ton of background voices throughout this video. (That isn't to shit on the production value or anything. Or that it's supernatural.) But, if anyone wants to test their hearing. This is the video to do it on.

At this date in time (10/30/21) Davey Havok is 45 years old According to Google. This video was 8 years ago, he'd be 37-38 during this video. He looks like a 20 year old in this video, he currently still looks just about as young as he did in this video despite being almost a decade older. Obviously the age is showing, however most people begin falling apart fast around 40-45 depending on their lifestyle. If he still looks like he's in his 20s, I firmly believe this man has lived a stress-free, easy-going life and hasn't touched a single cigarette or did any drugs whatsoever. As well as eating only fruit and salads every day. He ages like a god. He's immortal. Davey will live long enough to witness the Sun die, explode, and consume our entire solar system.
Goddamn! I never ever realized how fucking gorgeous Davey Havok is! It's the Silver and Cold video that I have held in my mind of how he looked. Not that he wasn't pretty then; he's just so fucking gorgeous seeing him here.

Girls Not Grey is the opening song. Miss Murderer, man he looked well from my view, odd and then to Beautiful Thieves he looked quite handsome. And for those kids afraid and yell out those who compliment other men on looks, called out for being gay, wrong. AFI's music was pretty good, 17 Crimes wasn't so good in my opinion, but not to bad.
the cat jumping through the number 9 was also Part of the EverReady brand Logo, they made Batteries, Radios, i think at some point as well they made Tubes and Televisions as well
Even though AFI turned into kind of a goth band, their early shit was incredible. Totalimmortal is a horror punk classic. I’d have loved to see him fronting the misfits.
He is intelligent and more glam style than most of your hardcore punks. . EMO was started by this guy.. I think the Gay world would be proud to have him but I think he's just a true outsider that will make his way just like The Unsatisfied and MM and NiN and all the other freak bands that have more going on than meets the eye. :) good job Davey. LUVnBLOOD
The Unsatisfied Even if emo was started by Davey (which is a crock of shit but even if it were true) how is being the person who started emo (being whiney bitches who cry about how no one understands them when they don't get their way and threaten to cut or kill themselves when their crushes don't return their feelings or when other insignificant middle - high school "problems" happen) something to be proud of? The person or people who actually are responsible for starting that movement should be ashamed of themselves for inspiring a huge section of today's youth to be oversensitive, crybaby, attention seeking drama queens. Davey Havok actually wrote a song called Soap Box Derby where he completely bashes emos for their whiney behavior. Still think the guy's emo?
+Celio19891 He says that, but he's also the guy that wrote "cut myself today, it's all for you", "you don't care that it haunts me", "such revelations while understood by no one." Either he never genuinely felt that way or went back on what he said in Soap Box Derby. I'm guessing the latter is more likely. So yes, I do think he has felt whiny sometime in his life.
Emo wasn't started by AFI, they were punks. Freaking pop-punks, but not emo. The first emo could be Dead from Mayhem, but he wasn't emo as well 😂 emos just tried to copy metal. And hey are you saying that Davey is gay??😦
Met him at Disneyland once he's one of the chillest people, a bit overzealous with the whole vegan thing tho. I gotta say I question the soundness of the statement that he became vegan in order to "evolve", I think the consensus amongst most anthropologist is actually the contrary, it was precisely when our ancestors evolved the capacity to eat meat that it became possible for them to sustain larger brains because of the much higher calorie intake that is required of a species with Brian's as big as ours...
we didnt evolve from eating meat, we evolved from being able to cook food and receive bigger calorie sources. the human anatomy and biology is that of a frugivore/herbivore.
I am an opiate addict (pain pills, heroin, ect) that has been in treatment for over a year, and been clean just over a year. AFI's straight-edge mentality and seeing my life go to shit, gave me the strength to find help.

BurninatorTheTrogdor hi you must be a fan and I have been wanting to talk to a fan, I just had one question, i know he’s a catholic turned atheist, but in one pic davey havoc was sporting a shirt that had the baphomet on it and I know what it is but I was wondering if you could tell me wether Davey was satanic? Not to worry I’m not a bible thumper, I just wanted something clarified.
@@stevenbari5568 Typically, when someone is an atheist, they don't believe in anything within the religious realm. Including the devil. Chances are the shirt just looked cool, and it was nothing more than that.
@@stevenbari5568 These types of bands are mainstream so to make it big you have to sell your soul to the devil as signed that deal in blood.
@@CountDruckula Oh I see
A very underrated singer.. glad to see he's down to earth.. I hope the rest of the original members are still with him... I've gotten a lot of shit from my peers because of afi. But every time I'd crank up their albums my friends would always ask who's that, they're good!!" Haha
One of my best memories in life.
He is so genuine. I can’t get enough...
I was at an AFI concert at the Wiltern and Davey was crowd surfing and singing, got within two people of me, freaking nuts man. What a show.
OMG, Davey's voice makes me so happy. I just adore him.
used to be lucky enough to see them in petaluma at the phoenix. this dude is really humble and cool and super talented
I seriously wanna sit and talk with davey. Hes such an interesting individual
Neat to see the progression both as a band and individually.
davey havok talks like he works for grey poupon
That is hilarious,
Girls Not Grey Poupon?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@LittleLillith82 this comment needs more love.
This is my first time watching any AFI interview and Davey’s speaking voice sounds so much different than I thought it would for some reason.
Davey has been a role model for me since I was a kid. I'm still trying to live up to this man's greatness.
I love his work in Schitt's Creek
lol
Hahaha
i can’t wait for people to not understand this 😂
Lol
Ew Davey.
OMG I was going to point that out too.
The way he talks... omg, he's so calmed
THROUGH OUR BLEEDING WE ARE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow, he looks really good.
Well, when you claim that because you're vegan you're more evolved than other humans, that does make him pretentious and arrogant.
jb111082 he didn’t say that he’s more evolved than others, he just said that our species himself included need to become vegans (which is true, meat production is really bad for the enviroment. And no, I myself am not vegan)
@@lilwaterpump3289 Nor am I. I agree that the production of meat en mass is most likely bad for the environment.
Wtf are you talking about. When did he say that? Seems to me like you're paraphrasing.
Seems like a genuinely nice guy.
until he learns you eat meat and wear leather
@@PANZERFAUST90 Oh fuck off he's not gonna berate anyone
He also apparently hated everything about college. I used to be a part of the AFI fanclub, which meant that I had access to a forum where the band members could get on and answer questions from fans. I asked him what he disliked the most about college (while stating that I hated the goddamn 7:30 am classes I had) and his answer was short, sweet, and to the point: "Everything."
+Brittany Lawless What else did they say?
Kjn864 That was it. He literally said "Everything" and that was his entire post.
Brittany Lawless what was your username? I was on the DF forum for quite a while. then I got banned.
firstnight, I think. I was pretty much never on.
Despair Faction?
Did he age backwards? He doesn't even look like the same person to me. His hair cut completely changed his whole look. Very good.
Omg! I was so in love with this man when I was 12 years old, and now I'm 25 and still wanna marry him! 🤣
First time I see Davey talking about personal stuff like his name or his father
Good interview, some of my best memories involve AFI's music.
Davey has a calming energy about him...
I remember back in dial-up days hanging out in the skateboarding chatroom where people were sXe and proud.
It was a cool place for all kinds of people to chill. Sometimes I miss those deviants (including the sXe kids; they were a blast).
His hair is always looking good.
He's so humble. I dont know if anyone caught what he meant. Or what I think he meant when asked about the article about him. He said their are mirrors which distract him more than sentences about himself. I think he's implying. I know who I am I dont need strangers to tell me.
Dude comes off as super intelligent
R Jonas Too bad he isn't...
He's also rather sexy
Except for the part where he says "Evolve with my species and become a vegan" 😂
@@alexleblanc5926 Yeah he immediately lost a lot of credibility as soon as he vomited that one up.
You two should read more. ☝️☝️
I mean, if you really wanna die for a burger, go for it!
Thanks Jimmy for helping out.
Davey is a very strong person, this is a new phase we didn't know about him
Q: How do you know someone is a vegan?
A: Don't worry, they'll tell you whether you ask or not.
I kid though. Such a great artist, performer, and band.
He's still a stuck-up douche.
Meat consumption is destroying the planet. Would you rather us just sit around with our thumbs up our asses, or do something about it? Awareness brings change.
This era of afi feels like it was yesterday. I’ve been a fan for 20 years.
.i know this is UA-cam but I'm actually shocked by all the hate in the comments
just stupid "haters" trying to bother community...
If you know UA-cam why are you shocked?...
It's AFI it comes with the territory.
The interviewer is probably nervous because Davey havok is making him question his sexuality.
Lol
I am completely straight and really attracted to Davey Havok... just wanted you to know that... wow, I feel lighter.
@@JeremyGBranch You might not be completely straight. Hate to break it to you.
@@KnivingDispodia do you tho, random person? Do you “hate to break it to me”
with no other motivation other than not hating to break it to me? I dunno. Seems like you really want to break it to me.
Welcome to this format. The best part is the anxiety producing pauses and questions.
Love Davey and how well spoken his. Such a stand up guy
Holy vocal fry Davey.
Daniel Bui gotta save them pipes
Goddamn! I never ever realized how fucking gorgeous Davey Havok is! It's the Silver and Cold video that I have held in my mind of how he looked. Not that he wasn't pretty then; he's just so fucking gorgeous seeing him here.
This just makes me love him even more.
SHould have mentioned that Nick 13 also shares that same tattoo
I remember them always at the Phoenix Theater. An entire lifetime ago!
3:04 eyy he’s talking about the “tri” at the highschool. I played my first live show there
I played the "tri" for the first time in 1997. We had 8-9 albums by then. Glad to hear bands are still a thing at UHS.
I miss Davey and all my Ukiah musician buddies from the 90's.
Dude looks like a young Robert Deniro
People, if you don't like DXH don't comment. All you do is cause unnecessary drama. Anyways, love this interview! Nice to know what's true and what isn't.
Omg Gruhamed was a fetus here! He's gotten so much more confident and better at interviews. I love seeing this actually 😊
the cat jumping through the number 9 was also Part of the EverReady brand Logo, they made Batteries, Radios, i think at some point as well they made Tubes and Televisions as well
Lol
HOLY SHIT HIS DAVEY'S JAW IS MY GOALS TO LIVE.
what is up with the audio on all these vids? some are super loud but most are really low volumes
Finally someone who understands the lightning bolt cat jumping through 9 is a real thing.
Eveready logo?
His voice... Is so soft:3 I love it:) it makes you pay closer attention
still love him in 2017!!!
Rochester love! We love you!
amazing piece for a amazing band.
Even though AFI turned into kind of a goth band, their early shit was incredible. Totalimmortal is a horror punk classic. I’d have loved to see him fronting the misfits.
he's ridiculously gorgeous
holy crap, Davey Havok is turning into Morrissey
Woah, its been years since ive bothered looking up AFI..
He looks so much better now than he did when i was a teenager.
Hes so sweet and quiet
Davey is such a beautiful human being I've been following them for 20+ years
I remember the first time I saw the Girls Not Gray video I couldn't figure out if he was male or female.
Nothing but love for Davey!
Davey is an amazing gift to us all... and oh so beautiful... I can’t handle it haha 😂
God bless you , mr. Havock. Merry Christmas. Rock on . From skater and guitarist sheldrick Holmes of Decatur , georgia .
Change your name to SHREDRICK!
@@Mr_Clean YES SIR
Shedrick may be the start of my rock and roll career.
LUVnBLOOD
Damn right
The Unsatisfied Even if emo was started by Davey (which is a crock of shit but even if it were true) how is being the person who started emo (being whiney bitches who cry about how no one understands them when they don't get their way and threaten to cut or kill themselves when their crushes don't return their feelings or when other insignificant middle - high school "problems" happen) something to be proud of?
Thank you thank you thank you for this great interview. Well conducted and informative.
xXx
Dude is looking mad healthy.
Not a fan of his latest work but I really admire and respect him.
Met him at Disneyland once he's one of the chillest people, a bit overzealous with the whole vegan thing tho. I gotta say I question the soundness of the statement that he became vegan in order to "evolve", I think the consensus amongst most anthropologist is actually the contrary, it was precisely when our ancestors evolved the capacity to eat meat that it became possible for them to sustain larger brains because of the much higher calorie intake that is required of a species with Brian's as big as ours...
we didnt evolve from eating meat, we evolved from being able to cook food and receive bigger calorie sources. the human anatomy and biology is that of a frugivore/herbivore.
the evolve thing was clearly a joke lol
All that smart shit, and you ended with Brian's. That is hilarious. You're right though, bigger are Brian's are better Brian's.
diregremo Gee, I love Brian’s
8:40 who is the artist he says? Dan Hicks or Dan Haze not sure what he says?
Im actually curious as to why the government asked to pull down a website domain like that.
It was too deep and dark for even the deepest dark web was going to crash and cause the government to lose money.
Great questions from the interviewer.
