I love this Album. With each listen, it gets better and better, and Ode To Freedom literally slays me. It's like they're saying goodbye and leaving a cautionary tale to making. I'm 59 years old, and never thought they'd get back together. I'm filled with elation and tears. God Bless Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Frida. You were the soundtrack of my life.

As someonewho has loved this band since 74, this album is an absolute gift. It is pure theatre and is so emotional that I have had tears running down my face every time I listen to it. "Ode to Freedom" is particularly beautiful and, given that it's the last song on their final album is especially able to choke me up - it's not just the song but also the implicationof finality and closure on these wonderful artists.
Love your reactions Dereck - the best out there, and luckily for you still many ABBA songs to discover

"I Still Have Faith In You" has grown on me massively, and like you, I loved it to start with anyway, but now it's up there among their best for me. It's just so effortlessly bittersweet and touching. Frida's final statement of the track title at the end absolutely breaks me.

What a fabulous album. I am in love with Ode to Freedom. I love, love this album. What a great gift. I hope it helped them as a way to tie loose ends and to come to a loving place in their lives. What they gave the world is priceless. I do not know how to thank them. It brings tears to my eyes again. Thank you ABBA. By the way, we knew there was going to be a Christmas song on it. They told us. You might consider watching their interviews. You can have a great education. As far as the car, I can sing ballads and rockers while driving. They both express my moods and feelings. Who said you can only jam with an upbeat song in the car? Another fable.

Just on track 2 WHEN YOU DANCED WITH ME, that's an Irish inspired track.....Kilkenny is one of the 32 counties of Ireland. ODE TO FREEDOM is the soundtrack of the journey of these four entities who return where they came from having fulfilled their mission, which began with Ring Ring 48 years ago. 48 years of pure joy. They said this is their last work and they came back to tell us. There is melancholy for this, but this departure will make their whole gift even more appreciated. Thanks Abba. 🇮🇹

So glad and grateful for the younger generation that is discovering ABBA!
I find almost all of ABBA`s songs/lyrics are personal. Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Annifrid are all humble, nice, honest and decent human beings; down to earth people.
They are just like anybody else, with all of their flaws, traumas, embarrassments, difficulties etc. They know that, and they do not put themselves over anybody else. In addition, they are even generous with sharing those painful experiences with us, so that we have the opportunity to feel our own pain - and heal it. They also share their joy and happiness with us; all their precious feelings. That is why their music touches all of us, young as old and everyone in between. That makes their music so GREAT, and SPECIAL. I think. What do you think?
In addition, all about ABBA is natural. They could easily have artificially “fixed” the ladies “older” voices and other things, but they refrained from doing so. Their music it is genuine right through
As far as I know, no other band is doing the same today; the temptation is too big to fix almost everything to perfection. ABBAs music is therefore REAL MUSIC. Today it is unusual, which makes them so BIG!

Yes...I agree that Frida's voice is dominant when the two girls sing in unison. Don't think it was done intentional just how powerful dominant her voice is...especially noticeable now that she is much older and her voice much deeper...I have to say that Frida now and Frida when she was younger, really has a unique voice, I have not heard a voice like hers from other woman singers. Agnetha also has a very unique timeless voice...for 71 her voice sounds angelic timeless....love the girls....

It isnt always the case though. On many ABBA songs there is clear third voice (Mamma Mia, Ring Ring, Dancng Queen, Chiqutita, Thank you for the music, Voulez Vous, Gimme Gimme, Name of the game et cet). On some other songs Frida's more prominent in chorus (Fernando, I have a dream, Dum Diddle) and on some another songs - Agnetha (Cassandra, One of us, As good as new, Soldiers). I think on new album their voices became lower (including Agnetha - her low voice on ISHFIY became very similar to Frida's - in harmony part they merge well). in WYDWM they both singing in low voice. In 2d part of chorus (when they go slightly higher) you hear their both voices clearer.

In "When you danced with me" it's natural, that Frida's voice sounds stronger. The instrumentation is heavy on pipes and violins which overlap a lot with Agnetha's high soprano, partially absorbing it. So Frida's deeper voice is in more contrast to the background.

My head is still spinning since the album dropped at midnight on Thursday night!!! For me:
I Still Have Faith In You - The ultimate comeback single and I just love the instrumentation (especially the synths and the flutes), the sublime vocals and slow build up and the explosion of bittersweet and sentimental joy in the choruses. 9.5/10
When You Danced With Me - I'm a sucker for Irish music along with Benny's Swedish folk music stuff with BAO so I adore this!!! But it does end too quickly and abruptly and could have maybe benefited with it kicking off more with the vocals perhaps in acapella before the thumping drums come in? It's performing quite well on streaming charts around the world at the moment and I wonder too if it will become a staple at Irish weddings! 9/10
Little Things - It's incredible that after almost 50 years we have an Abba Christmas song!!! (though "I Have A Dream" and "Super Trouper" have been considered somewhat festive) Beautifully clean production, both Frida & Agnetha's vocals are gorgeous and hehe at the naughty bit with the breakfast tray! Also I wonder if the children's choir and the reference to Grandma at the end is a nod to the St Winifred' School Choir whose single "There's No One Quite Like Grandma" beat "Super Trouper" to be the UK's #1 Christmas single for 1980? 8/10
Don't Shut Me Down - Still sounds beyond amazing 2 months on, just a completely flawless pop song and recording. Perfection. 10/10 (the Dolby Atmos mix on Apple Music with more prominent vocals and punchier drums gets 11/10!!!)
Just A Notion - I think I prefer the 2021 version, just sounds more finished and polished to my ears. Can't believe that some out there still think it's unworthy of being on the album, it's just so fun, cheery, catchy and pure Abba!!! Interestingly the Dolby Atmos mix has the guitars shining through more and overall it sounds a bit closer to the 1978 demo. 9/10

That was Friday November 5, but as I listened to the album repeatedly over the weekend and into this week, I absolutely fell in love with the entire album. Songs that I was really unsure of, like What About Dan and No Doubt About It, I found myself first humming along then singing along to those tracks. It is amazing how this album really gets so much better with repeated listening. I have been listening to this album on repeat while working all week long, I can't get enough of it. Amazing. When you said that Fridas voice has much more strength to it than Agnethas, is true, I'm thinking maybe Benny and Bjorn needed the girls to sing in that way to give both of them the opportunity to give all fans of both girls equality of their voices, if that makes sence😊

    • @graphiquejack
      @graphiquejack 2 роки тому +3

The band has always been fair to both women giving them equal divisions of lead vocals. This album is no exception, but interestingly, they’ve tried something different with their vocal harmonies. Just a Notion has Agnetha pushed forward with Frida clearly in the background when they are singing together, and in Little Things it’s the reverse where Frida is definitely singing more prominently with Agnetha singing a backing harmony. The only song where it’s truly their ‘third voice’ is When You Danced With Me. Dereck felt Frida’s voice sounds more prominent there, too, but I think this a more equal blend… Frida does naturally have more power behind her voice and always has. I think the men were just always careful to blend them really well to get that unique ‘third voice’ that we love so much.
I Still Have Faith - Frida
When You Danced - third voice
      Little Things - Frida predominant
Don’t Shut Me Down - Agnetha
Just a Notion - Agnetha prominent
      I Could Be - Agnetha
      Keep An Eye - Agnetha

You were wondering if there might be a reason for Frida being so prominently present on this album,
and I've wondered about that too... Could it be that, because Frida admitted in several interviews during
ABBA's gap years that she had been jealous sometimes of most songs that have been given to Agnetha,
it is something of an apology to her..? And so she's more in the spot-light this final time around? Who knows,
but that would be nice 😍
I've always been one for team-Frida and was also dissapointed sometimes when a new album came out, and
Frida's voice most of the times seemed only to be leading on the album-tracks instead of the singles...
I have always wondered how it would have been had Frida sung 'The Day Before You Came'...
Anywho... Voyage is a wonderful album, and 98% of the world seems to agree (have you read RollingStone mag.?)
And I do understand your reactions, even when you rate them a 7, or 8, and talk about 'a cute song', but I can
assure you: if you play this album seven times, and discover all the layers everywhere, understand the lyrics
and the story-telling a bit more... all ratings will go up to 10's everywhere (perhaps one 9?)
I can't get any of the songs out of my head by now: have a little patience and you'll get there too!
Btw: 'Little Things' is a definite 10! 😜😜😜

I agree. As a life-long ABBA fan, a lot of their music is instantly catchy, but some of the best tracks do take a few listens to completely fall in love with (Don't shut me Down was instant, I Still Have Faith in You probably took me more than 10 listens to completely love rather than merely like). It's the same with this album - the first listen to Little Things I wasn't sure, and now it's stuck in my head and won't leave - it's beautiful. I'm sure that eventually I Can be that Woman will be covered in true Country and Western style by a country artist at some point.

    • @robertwill23

Frida prominent on this new album, probably, because Agnetha doesnt have that edgy high voice anymore and their much lower voices merge too well now (Agnetha's low voice sounds very similar to Frida's now). And I think it's nonsense that Frida was jealous of songs given to Agnetha. She sang leads on many ABBA hits. Benny and Bjorn knew what songs suited which girl's voice. And certain songs required certain voice. and already on Visitors Frida was more present and was given more songs. So I think it's very strange narrative that Frida was underrated somehow. Agnetha was sidelined on Visitors. She wasnt given same freedom that Frida has gotten on that album. imho, new ABBA album lacks that contrast between two girls' voices. that tension.

    • @Lisa-M

@@robertwill23 Frida indeed admitted that she was sometimes jealous of songs given to Agnetha. Just today I saw a documentary in TV where she said that. • @lounolastname4477
      @lounolastname4477 2 роки тому +9

@@Lisa-M She was kind of joking when she said that. Frida wanted to sing The Winner Takes It All and that was the song she was referencing in that interview and equally, Agnetha wanted to sing Our Last Summer - so I don’t know why people keep focusing on just Frida wanting to sing a certain song and translating that into more than it is. Benny and Björn made the right decisions based on which would highlight each voice. Frida’s voice was more adaptable with a larger range and full bodied, colourful timbre whereas Agnetha’s was more suited to pop centric with crystal clear high but thinner brighter sound - both beautiful voices in their own right but Frida’s voice could carry more different styles - she sounds different but still uniquely distinctive on every recording so could be used for their more creative compositions. Singularly they both have exceptionally beautiful voices and together they transform into unequalled magical perfection

ABBA are well and truly back as Voyage charges straight in at Number 1 on the Official UK Albums Chart. Racking up 204,000 chart sales in its first seven days, Voyage is the fastest-selling album of 2021 so far, and earns the biggest opening week on the UK’s Official Albums Chart in four years.
Their tenth Number 1 record in the UK, Voyage is the renowned group’s first studio album to top the Official Albums Chart in 40 years - though two hits collections, The Singles and Gold both managed the feat in between. It’s also the fastest-selling album released by a group in eight years.
Indeed, ABBA are only the fourth act in the past decade to surpass 200,000 UK chart sales in release week. Voyage’s total is made up of 90% physical copies, including 29,900 on vinyl, which makes it the fastest-selling vinyl release of the century.
This also marks ABBA’s 58th total week as UK Number 1 on the Official UK Albums Chart. Only two other acts in history have spent more weeks at the top, The Beatles and Elvis. Additionally, with ten Number 1 albums to their name, only seven other acts have notched up more UK chart-toppers than ABBA.
Celebrating the news, ABBA tell the Official UK Charts, “We are so happy that our fans seem to have enjoyed our new album as much as we enjoyed making it! We are absolutely over the moon to have an album at the top of the charts again!”

Okay, this was wild. Who knew. Now we know where Lenny Kravitz got his riffs and structure for one of the great rock songs of all time, Are You Gonna Go My Way. Likewise,ABBA were picking up on rock and pop pieces from 60's and early 70's bands & solo artists. My high school and college days, my wheelhouse. 1st 3 Chicago albums, 1st 3 Led Zeppelin, BS&T, Mamas & Papas, and so on. Even when we all got married and had kids, my base number for a good party was 85 of my closest friends. And you had to be ready to sing your butt off. One New Year's party was so good that 45 showed up to party again the next night, and they all brought food. Awesome. I've noticed several groups after ABBA in the 80's and 90's picking up ideas from them. ABBA was not much into trends, but they were the best artists at being able to do every imaginable style. Take Put on Your White Sombrero, obviously mariachi, but a perfect Marty Robbins song also. No one else has crossed every genre the way ABBA could, and made it look easy.

As one of the older fans who's been around and waited 40 years for a new album I think you're doing the group a great service introducing the band to younger people who hopefully will love the variation of 'Voyage', invest in the back catalogue, and carry the music on for future generations to fall in love with when all us old fans are long gone. Infact the only sadness I feel listening to Voyage is that so many of the older ABBA fans who bought the records and went to the concerts are no longer with us. Dereck you need to listen to "When you danced with me" again. You sold it short. It is a fantastic song I have already listened to that one about a hundred times and don't get tired of it.

I like Little Things but I sure wish they’d placed it last on the album. It’s placement as the 3rd song disrupts the flow. I don’t necessarily want to listen to Christmas music all the times I listen to the rest of the album. I would have preferred this to be the 10th of 10 tracks, or just as a b-side/bonus track to one of the singles from the album.
