Love this from these guys! Waterloo album definitely had such diversity that it's magical!
Cmon every album has a couple of rock songs.
ABBA never fails to surprise and amaze whether it’s old or new material ……they are simply not afraid to be themselves and we are the benefactors of such talent and diverse music genius……..be it beautiful harmonies or a funky all out rocking song no one does it better…..thanks for bringing Watch Out back to us……looking forward to Voyage and your reaction to all the tracks!!

Always loved 'Watch Out!' You can really hear how the girls vocals go from being just a hook to the main feature of later tracks. Good find!
The “ooh la la la la” part is my favorite too! Waterloo is just a fantastic album. And Someone else already said it, “Suzy-Hang-Around” is the only track where Benny sings the lead, and it’s on the same album! Check that one out, too!
More great songs from that album which he hasn't reacted to are "Gonna Sing You My Love Song" and "What About Livingston". :-D
I said it before but he also took lead on "Here Comes Rubie Jamie" (yeah it's unreleased, never the less it's still out there)

@Tigg Their version is not bad, but simply not in the same league as ABBA's .. But good luck to them for having some success with it .. Bjorn and Benny ( with Stig ) wrote this fantastic song, but generously gave it to their ex Hep Stars bandmate Svenne and his partner to perform first .. It's OK, but ABBA's version rules. 😊

Absolutely loved this. It was a B-side to one of their singles I bought - I can't remember for the life of me which single, either Waterloo or SOS. Whichever one, I played Watch Out more than anything else.

Benny's voice is completely different to Björn's. Listen to "Suzy-Hang-Around", the only song with Benny in lead vocals and you will hear it.
@Lex If I remember correctly he has said that he didn't want to sing the lead in more songs.
I know I'm being a stickler (because I've said it a few times on here...sorry) but even though it's unreleased, he also sang lead(with Frida) on "Here Comes Rubie Jamie"

I ABBASOLUTELY love every ABBA song that came from the mind and heart of Bjorn and Benny and from the heart and voices of Agnetha and Annifrid (and Bjorn and Benny). Every song are stitches of coloured threads that make a beautiful tapestry of their journey through their lives and experiences ,good and bad and after 40 years their VOYAGE continues and they add a little more to the tapestry ,and we ,those who have the wisdom to see and love in our hearts to hear them get to view the most beautiful inspiring colourful tapestry ever created,and "Watchout",has a. very special place in that picture .I'm a 47 year fan I'm 61 now,and they still make me cry.
He is your brother live in Australia is another great performance of a fun song form early days. It really takes ahold in that live version. Cheers for the ABBA Dereck :)) Also love the My Mama Said which you heard recently for the funky base
You haven't heard "Man in the Middle" yet. A very funky cut, with Benny playin' a clavinet ( a very funky keyboard instrument), and Bjorn singin' lead.
Glad you enjoyed my suggestion…..With 103 recordings under their name. They have a lot of hidden gems, we’ve only just scratch the surface. “Watch out” was recording number 22. Echoing a lot of the popular Glam Rock vibes of the time. Such as “Sweet”. Makes me wonder how many other experimental and non-recorded songs they might have in their back catalogue..
You still have there songs Tiger, Lovelight, Dum Dum Diddle and Bennys only lead song Suzie Hang Around to listen to. I think that your gonna like Tiger the most.
He's also missing Bang-A-Boomerang.

ABBA ROCK SONGS, SO UNDERRATED. ESPECIALLY SO LONG. THEIR BASS LINES BY THE LATE RUTGER GUNNARSSON, OUT OF THIS WORLD ON EVERY ABBA TRACK. TRY OUT: KING KONG SONG 😍😍😍😍
Somebody finally mentioned the bass player's name. The backing band somehow always gets overlooked, as though good musicians grew on trees.
Watch Out is such a damn good song, I just had to listen to it again as it's stuck in my head again!!
Ooh Dereck Dereck. You've re-introduced me to a proper oldie. It's a bloody good song for sure, with great instrumentation and the women's vocals as usual. Bjorn's vocals are perhaps the best he'd ever been. The lyrics are very dark indeed:

This is stalker territory, though in 1973/74 this term probably didn't exist. You mention the guitar and the bass, but the drums are worth a mention too, e.g at 5'20 where the drums have an insistent beat that carries us forward whilst the women's vocals lull us into false sense of security with that lovely 'Ooh a la la'.
You're really turning into a full-on Abba fan. Nice.
You better check out Suzy hang around. The only one with Benny on the lead. He has such a great voice!
"Watch Out' comes from the 'Waterloo' album and was, in most places the B-side of the Eurovision smash hit in most countries. Bjorn does his very best glam rock vocal and the girls screech through the backing vocals. The guitar is from Janne Schaffer, who worked with ABBA a lot in the studio. Speaking about the track Bjorn would later comment the track was worthless apart from Janne's guitar riff.There is a live version on youtube from the 74/75 tour but it is a bootleg so the quality is poor due to multiple copying and a fan in a crowd with limited recording equiptment back in the day. Still worth a listen.
Even though its always hard to grad perfection,and ABBAs music is,all,perfection,this is one of my personal favorites in the ABBA treasure trove...I LOVE this metal rock feel,that they do better then any other rock or metal band out there..they prove here that they can do all kinds of music,all kinds of genres with equal perfection..all parts of this song is just perfect...love it..
Suzy-Hang-Around is the only ABBA song with Benny on lead vocals. It’s a nice little gem from the Waterloo era and you should definitely check it out!

I love that you notice the naughty in ABBA's songs Derek! Mainstream media only ever talks about how pop, bubblegum and family friendly they were. There can be a lot of innuendo in ABBA's songs.
a lot of we younger folks in the late 70s immediately made the link between ABBA "Voulez-Vous" and Patti Labelle's "Lady Marmalade". Now THAT was some shenanigans there ;)

Hey, this is my first time at this channel.
The fact that you understood and got into this song at first listen is a good sign. The groove - everything about it is top shelf. Would be great to see covers of it but this recording is hard to follow since it grooves and rocks through the roof.

Glam Rock ABBA
ABBA played this on their 1974/75 tours complete with smoke, light shows, fireworks. 'Rock And Roll Band' and 'Hey Hey Helen' were also from their Glam Rock side. ABBA concerts were a lot more rocky than you'd imagine.

Only the second ABBA song I ever heard. I loved it and it even got me more interested in them than Waterloo. I thought maybe they were some kind of Swedish hard rock group. They weren’t but it’s something really great and different from them. Slightly sinister lyrics and all 😂

Anyways, check ABBA and OLIVIA's Show 1978 . Shw asks Benny to start with the Beach Boys's hit Barbara. In the Move On song he starts with the lyrics by speaking first

The best thing about this song is the main high note that Frida holds, while Ana makes a super-high sustain as a second voice ... bjorn's voice is phenomenal here; without a doubt it is a great experimental rock and roll theme
Definitely Bjorn on lead vocals...the formula was usually to try and have him sing lead on one track every album...Benny never was one to take lead ever, except for "Suzy Hang Around"... although a track on the Thank You For The Music box set "Undeleted" has a cut with Benny taking lead (shared with Frida) on "Here Comes Rubie Jamie"

many dislike the song, i like it, it's fun.... ABBA on glam rock... and still ABBA... in 1973 and 1974 they were still very experimental, a bit like musical puberty, lol. They were trying all sorts of styles.. I mean look at the album, this one next to Dance and Hasta Manana.... hillarious.... and some people actually say they all sound the same...

Lenny Kravitz' guitar riff on "Are You Gonna Go My Way" reminds me of ABBA's "Watch Out". Love the energy on this early ABBA track.

Benny sings lead vocals on the song "Suzy Hang Around"; other than that, I think the male lead vocal was always Bjorn.

I've always loved how trashy and dirty Abba were in this song and what a wild departure it was from their usual very polished pop. In Carl Magnus Palm's "The Complete Recording Sessions" Bjorn & Benny say that Janne Schaffer's guitar riff that was played on a guitar synthesiser was the best part of the song and that in the early days of Abba they tried to have some rock n' roll tracks on the albums for variation but felt that they weren't really suited to it. "Watch Out" was recorded on the same day as "Waterloo" and was the B-side to the English speaking single of it.
Also with 7 new tracks just days away now the Dolby Atmos mixes of the 3 tracks already released are now available on Apple Music. Differences between the regular mix and the Dolby Atmos mix are:
I Still Have Faith In You - Both mixes are pretty similar but the synths and flute sounds are more prounced along with the guys' backing vocals in Dolby Atmos.
Don't Shut Me Down - In Dolby Atmos Agnetha's lead vocal at the beginning is louder with the backing vocals much clearer (especially the oooooohs) and the drums are sharper and punchier. Sounds amazing!!!
Just A Notion - In Dolby Atmos Benny's piano, the lead vocals and the drums are buried more in the mix with the backing vocals (especially the a-has) and the guitar more prominent. I much prefer the regular mix.
So excited to hear both the regular and the Dolby Atmos versions of Voyage on Friday to compare!!!

Weder im ABBA Film, noch in ihren Shows, die Sie gemacht haben, wie z.B. damals in Polen oder der Schweiz.
Habe da Benny nie etwas Singen hören, außer beim Refrain natürlich !!!
Auch vor ABBA, als er mit den HEEP STARS auf der Bühne stand, war immer ein anderer der Frontmann.
Außerdem, wie schon angemerkt, hat der Meister selbst gesagt, dass er das Singen denen überlässt, die es besser können, als er.

He is a Christian writing music and last year just remade his hit song of way back which proved timely in this pandemic we are all in. It is entitled Take me out of the Dark. There are several versions of it but the raw version is the best.

Hi... Have a listen to ABBA’S “INTERMEZZO No1” track, from their self titled album “ABBA” .... 1975! Their only true Instrument track ...
Some of Bjorn's creepier lyrics "you better watch out", "tired of waiting", "patience is fading" "I'll be close behind you". That character in the song needs a restraining order.
I think Bjorn had ideas of being a Rocker. At that time we had songs like "Rock & Roll Band" too. They definately didn't have the ABBA sound yet.
but then he showed us the restraint and wisdom in "Does Your Mother Know?" LOL
yeah I could tell there was something different about that voice, and of course he was part of Hep Stars, so he did sing. BUt wiht BJorn and the 2 ladies he was content to do what I do ( knowing I'm not soloist material) powerful and brillaint backup/harmony.. Something that is equally important in the best compositions

Björn has done the lead on several ABBA songs,although not as many times as the girls,but quite a few times,including this one.....he sings really good...and maybe this is his best lyrical effort......

hey dereck- dont think you have ever reacted to KING KING SONG (l video remake) this is from the waterloo album. the video i suggested has clips frorm the king kong movie and live stills from ABBA live. agnetha screams twice in this song which is worth a listen. its a glam type rock song with bjorn on lead which he did more back when they first started. i have read that the guys didnt like the song . the working title was called mr. sex its very untypical of the ABBA sound they would eventually develop but i still think its a cool song.
